    Child Care FAQs

The national typical hourly rate in 2022 is $20. 00 per hour for nannies and $17.50 for babysitters. Rates can vary based on the child care provider’s experience, certifications, employment status, and travel expenses. When calculating the cost of child care, you should also account for the number of children they’ll care for and additional responsibilities like household tasks or homework help. Learn more about how to set competitive rates for attracting the best babysitters.

The best way to find child care near you is to post a job detailing your needs on Sittercity, which will be shared with our community of available babysitters and nannies. We’ll notify you when child care providers apply to your job, and from there you can proceed with interviews, background checks, and reference checks so you can find the perfect fit for your family.

You can find experienced and passionate child care providers near you to provide the best care for your child, either in-home or virtually. Child care providers can help families with managing strict schedules, transportation to activities, homework help, last-minute coverage, date nights, and more. Whether you’re looking for full-time, part-time, live-in, or temporary care, you can count on Sittercity for finding passionate and experienced child care providers.

Families find trustworthy child care providers on Sittercity who are passionate about providing safe and enriching care for their children. Many providers report they are First Aid and CPR certified to provide the best care for your family. Babysitters and nannies have the option to complete regular background checks, and you can easily request a recent background check if they don’t have one or it is not recent. Families can also request to see professional references!

Our dedicated team also champions safety across our platform every day. Child care providers go through an identity verification process Berbix when registering an account. Some additional safety measures include Family Watchdog screening, babysitter and nanny reviews, and secure messaging.

Nannies and babysitters share the same primary responsibility of providing safe and enriching care for your child, but there are a few differences between them. Nannies are more commonly associated with regular work, whether full or part-time, offering daily or consistent care to a particular family. There are also several different types of nannies, including au pairs, house managers, doulas, live-in, and overnight nannies.

Babysitters, on the other hand, are typically hired for irregular or occasional work, either full or part-time. If you’re looking for last-minute care for date night, or the occasional few hours after school, a babysitter is a great best option.

Identifying the type and frequency of child care you’ll need is the best way to decide whether a babysitter or nanny is a better fit for your family.

Child care providers on Sittercity love providing enriching experiences for your children, and sharing their passions with them. They’re happy to participate in outdoor activities like sports, or indoor activities like music, baking, tutoring help, and art. Wherever your child’s interests lie, child care providers on Sittercity can engage them in a nurturing way.

Kindergartens in Greece: where can a foreigner send a child?

You came to Greece for permanent residence. With a small child, a preschooler. You need to work or study. In such a situation, it is logical to send the child to kindergarten. But what? State Greek, private – with in-depth study of English? Or maybe even hire a nanny? Looking for answers with an expert

State kindergartens. There are plenty of them in Greece. And they accept not only little Greeks, but also foreign children. Moreover, in the state nursery, the child is free of charge. True, working parents will not like the schedule. Kindergartens are open from 8:00 to 12:00, with an extension until 15:45, says Anna Shumskaya, an expert on immigration and education in Greece, head of EUEASY. How do people get out? Unite! One mother takes three or four children to her home, and then the parents take apart the baby. And everyone is happy.

    Photo: Shutterstock

If you want your child to be fed dinner and put to bed, you will have to pay. On average, 100-150 euros per month, which is inexpensive by Greek standards. Parents should pay attention that a short day in the kindergarten is not without reason. The task of the institution is to socialize the child so that he feels comfortable with his peers, plays, and relaxes. And nothing more! Learning to read and spell is the prerogative of kindergartens that prepare children specifically for school. Another nuance: if one of the parents does not work, the child will not be enrolled in kindergarten. In addition, the Greek preschool will speak the local language. It happened that the Russian-speaking baby, out of habit, wept bitterly – after all, nothing is clear!

Private kindergartens. Few can afford them. The cheapest ones cost 300-350 euros per month, and there are both 600 and 1000 euros. Therefore, such institutions are less popular, although non-poor foreigners send their children there. According to Anna Shumskaya, in order to stay afloat, private gardens come up with different tricks. Some promise to teach the child English or Greek. Others offer the development of creative talents. Many guarantee admission to school. Plus, you can agree with the caregivers to pick up the child not at the height of the working day, but at six in the evening.

Kindergartens at major universities. Universities often accommodate student parents. So, the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki offers young mothers to send their children to their own free kindergarten. The key condition here is to be a student of the relevant university.

No specific documents are required to enroll a child in kindergarten. You will need a birth certificate, a certificate of vaccination or a statement that you have not been vaccinated. If you want to send your child to a nursery or kindergarten with food, you need to collect documents about the parents, their marital status and income. The parent himself may be required to provide a residence permit and a paper confirming the legality of stay in the country. Just do not think that everything is simple: you came to any Athenian garden and immediately handed over the child. In the state – very decent queues. To go to kindergarten in the fall, you need to write in February-March. When recording, the prerogative is given to single mothers: they go in a separate queue, then mothers with three or more children, and then all the rest. But in private preschool institutions there are no problems with places. You can send your child here at any time of the year.

Nanny. This is a good alternative to a private garden. “If you are strained with money, I advise Russian-speaking mothers to unite and hire a nanny. She will look after the children six to eight hours a day for 400 euros per month. Now it is not a problem to find, for example, a married Russian-speaking girl who sits with her child. She will only be happy to have a part-time job, ”says Anna Shumskaya.

American Kindergarten School. EUR 7000-8500 per year depending on the number of sections chosen. Here you can study in elementary and high school.

    Greek American Learning Center.
7500-9500 euros per year depending on the number of sections. There is not only a kindergarten, but also junior and senior schools.

    Fragolinos Greek-English garden.
700 euros per month, there are Russian teachers, the emphasis is on preparing for a Greek school.

Greek-English garden Peter Pan. 12,000 euros per year. A large selection of developing circles, ranging from musical and theatrical to computer, sports. Preparation for admission to an English school.

    Greek garden.
7500-9000 euros per year. A kind of golden mean.

the best green oases of the Greek capital

Everyone knows that the Greek capital is famous for its unique ancient sights and magnificent museums. However, few people know that the world’s first botanical garden was also created in Athens! This happened in the 4th century BC, and its founder was Aristotle’s student Theophrastus.

Today, the city has several unique green oases that promise contact with nature and coolness away from city noise and exhaust, or allow you to relax between long walks around the city.

From the most famous – the National Garden on Syntagma – to the lesser known Botanical Garden on Iera Odos, the Greek capital offers several options that can become a place of rest or escape in the heat of a summer day.

In anticipation of the onset of summer, let’s take a walk through some of the Athenian oases.

    National Garden

If you are in the heart of Athens, there is no better place to relax than the National Garden. A real oasis right in the center of the Greek capital, behind the parliament building, will give you pleasant minutes (or hours) in the canopy of ancient trees, under the chirping of exotic birds. The garden is located in the “Roman” part of the city, created under the emperor Hadrian. In ancient times, the ancient sacred grove of the Lyceum was located on its territory.

The garden was founded by the first queen of independent Greece, Amalia, wife of King Otto, and was originally called “Royal”. The formation of the garden began in 1839 – 1840. by planting 15,000 ornamental plants brought from Milan. Then the plants arrived from Europe and North Africa, and, of course, from different parts of Greece. In 1923, the garden of more than 15 hectares became public and was renamed the “National Garden”.

Today, a visitor to the Garden can wander along the shady paths or relax in a cozy gazebo or on a bench, admire hundreds of species of trees, shrubs and other plants and some species of animals and birds, ponds with turtles and fish, traditional buildings, ancient fragments (mosaics Roman villa, marble architectural elements), sundial and busts of prominent Greek personalities. There is also a children’s library and playground on its territory. Many of the trees growing today are the same age as the garden itself and, in fact, “natural monuments”, so the National Garden can be safely called a green open-air museum.

The National Garden is open daily from dawn to dusk.

Garden at the Music Palace (Megaro Mousikis)

The flowery green garden at the Athens Music Palace (Megaro Mousikis) offers its visitors some of the most refreshing musical evenings in the city.

The garden opened its doors to the public seven years ago and has gradually become one of the most popular summer meeting places. The garden attracts people of all ages not only because it is possible to relax and unwind from the hustle and bustle of the city, but also because of the variety of artistic and educational events organized by the Palace of Music.

As regards the choice of plants, emphasis is placed on perennial species such as oak, carob, acacia, orange tree, magnolia, etc. In addition, the plants are selected in such a way as to ensure continuous flowering throughout the year. Laurels are planted along the perimeter of the garden, which protect its interior from pollution and noise and give it even greater aesthetic value.

The Palace of Music Garden is open to visitors daily from 10 am to sunset.

    Diomidus Botanical Garden

One of the perhaps lesser-known green corners of the city – even many Athenians do not know about its existence. Nevertheless, one of the largest botanical gardens in the eastern Mediterranean, located just 8 km from the center of Athens, in the Haidari area, on the northern slopes of Mount Egaleo near the monastery of Daphni, attracts the attention of many foreign scientists for a reason.

The garden consists of natural ecosystems (flower beds, groves, etc.) with more than 3,000 plant species, including endemic ones, categorized. One of them, a unique “historical” sector, includes plants mentioned in ancient texts, including ferula (Ferula communis), in the stem (narthex) of which Prometheus hid fire to bring it to people, and hemlock, or Conium maculatum, whose poison killed Socrates.

The garden is open to the public. The main entrance is located from the side of Iera Odos 403 (bus stop “Diomidios”).

    Grove (Alsos) in Nea Smyrna

An elegant green oasis in the southern metropolitan area of Nea Smyrna was created in the 20s of the last century. The park has easy access and is especially loved by jogging enthusiasts and athletes, and during the summer months there are cultural, musical, and theatrical performances. It is one of the largest green areas that exist in the municipalities of Attica, with an area of 50,000 sq.m. The grove has a playground and fountains with drinking water.

    Antonis Tritzis Ecological Park

Spread over an area of 120 hectares, this park is part of the territory acquired by the royal family in 1848 as a Center for Agriculture and Animal Husbandry. With easy access both by car and public transport, Antonis Tritzis Park is located between the municipalities of Ilion, Agia Anargyri and Kamatero and is one of the few reserves and the only park in Attica with a strong presence of the water element.

Six reservoirs of the park are an oasis for 177 species of birds, including rare ones. In addition to birds and rich flora and fauna, the park has an equestrian center, a reptile exhibition, an ecological bookstore, a library, a Greek scout department, two churches and street theaters.

In addition to hiking trails, guests can explore the trails by bike, relax with their children in the playground, organize a picnic or attend any of the environmental education programs run by the Hellenic Ornithological Society.

Archaeological Park of the Academy of Plato

We complete our selection with a unique place, which is a synthesis of nature and ancient history – the archaeological park of the Academy of Plato. The same Academy, which was created by the great ancient Greek Plato in 387 BC. And the same park, on the territory of which philosophical discussions were held more than twenty centuries ago.

Today, the park has the remains of buildings dating from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. A grove with trees and shrubs grows green around the ancient ruins, sports and playgrounds are located. About two years ago, the unique Digital Museum of Plato was opened in the park, within the walls of which the story of the life and work of the great ancient Greek philosopher unfolds. And today, as in the time of Plato, the park serves the Athenians and guests of the capital as a recreation or creation area.

By the way, the entrance to the territory of the archaeological park-monument is free.

Prestigious and expensive: the most famous international schools of Athens

Education in the capital is for every taste: from public schools, private schools to schools. Where children learn in foreign languages. Naturally, one of the most prestigious working on two systems – American and English.

There are many differences between these systems: for example, according to the American system, children go to the first grade at the age of six, and this system coincides with all European systems.

Under the British system, children start first grade at age five, but first grade in a British school is considered the last year of kindergarten for all other systems. That is, a child in the second grade of a British school is considered a first-grader in a Greek or American school.

In addition, these systems differ in their approach to study and discipline. The American system is more relaxed and open, there is no uniform, and in the elementary grades a lot of attention is paid to the talents and abilities of each child. That is, the emphasis is more on the fact that the child develops comprehensively and is able to correctly express his thoughts.

In the British system, everything is much stricter: the students there wear uniforms, they study different subjects from the first grades, and the main attention is paid to discipline – it is iron there. Such a system is suitable for those children who are not distinguished by perseverance and self-discipline, because in a British school they will monitor not only their behavior in the classroom, but also their homework.

By the way, each English-speaking school in Athens has kindergartens with a cost of 6,000 euros per year.

Private schools most often work according to the IB teaching system and are accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organization, which means that their diplomas (certificates) are recognized by all universities in the world.

Graduates of these schools take the IB exam at the end of their studies, and the results of graduates on it are an indicator of the effectiveness of teaching at the school. Therefore, schools are assigned something like a place in the ranking based on this indicator. But there is another exam – IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education), it is a less common alternative to the first one.

Schools usually publish IB test results on their websites, but if they don’t get very high scores there, they either don’t publish the results at all or list the IGCSE results.

American Community Schools (ACS Athens) – IB result 36.9

This school is affiliated with the American Consulate in Athens and is located in the Chalandri area. This school has been operating since 1945 and is the very first international school in Athens. The teaching staff at ACS does not consist of 100% native speakers and there are many Greek teachers working at this school, but there is a huge number of different nationalities gathered there (the school positions itself as multicultural, children from more than sixty countries study in it) and they all communicate between yourself in English. As foreign languages, Greek, Arabic, French, German, Spanish and Chinese are also studied.

After school, children can attend basketball, football, volleyball, athletics, archery, tennis and swimming sections.

There is no strict discipline in this school: children are allowed a lot, and they are given reprimands only in extreme cases, and the educational process in the primary grades is more built on games and physical activities in order to develop communication skills in children.

Studying at ACS costs 10,000 -12,000 euros per year, and enrolling a child costs 1,000 euros.

St. Catherine’s British School – IB result 36.5

This is a school at the British Consulate and it also belongs to the luminaries of the English-speaking education in Athens (it was opened in 1956). St. Catherine’s British School is an example of the purest British education: in it everything and everything is subject to strict rules, students wear uniforms, and first-graders start studying at the age of five. The school is very careful about its reputation and getting into it is not so easy, despite the high cost of study: the cost of education starts from 12,000 euros, and enrollment in it costs 2,500 euros. Of course, children from wealthy families study there, but the percentage of native speakers of English among the students there is much smaller than in ACS.

As already mentioned, the peculiarity of the British school is discipline and a serious academic load: children there begin to learn different subjects from the first grade. The whole system is built so that any child is accustomed to order, perseverance, responsibility and rules. For those children who do not differ in self-discipline, this is a good option.

In addition, the school pays great attention to charity and high school students participate in various socially significant projects: they can volunteer to teach English to children from poor families, save sea turtles or seek funding for environmental initiatives.

St Lawrence College – IGCSE result 25% A

St Lawrence College didn’t publish its IB results for some reason, but boasted 25% A scores according to IGCSE. This is the only English-language private school located in the south of Athens (Koripi area, but also serving the Voula and Glyfada areas). This school is also one of the most expensive British schools: enrolling in it also costs 2,500 euros, and you will have to pay 12,000 euros or more for studying.

St Lawrence College, although it is a British school, but there is no such rigor and stiffness as in St. Lawrence. Catherine’s British School, despite the uniform and busy daily routine. Children who are transferred to San Loren are very satisfied.

This school was originally located in Glyfada (there was an American military base), but then it moved to a new area in order to expand the territory: the school now looks like a resort with small houses-halls for various activities, sports fields and recreation areas.

Many Russian-speaking children study at this school and additional study groups for the study of the Russian language are organized.

Campion School – IB result 35

Campion School is considered a small school: if there are two thousand students in the above schools, then no more than a thousand students go to this school. Campion belongs to the British system, so it has both a form and rules.

A small number of students creates a slightly more relaxed atmosphere, because there all the students are in full view of the teachers and everyone gets a lot of attention from the teachers. Over the past few years, the Campion school has made a big leap in their results: until recently they had a much lower rating, and now they occupy a leading position among the Athenian schools.

This school is located in the Palini region, studying in it costs 10,000 – 12,000 euros per year, and you can enroll there for 1,000 euros.

ISA (International School Athens) – IB result 33.3

ISA refers to the American system and focuses on the comprehensive development of children. Teachers in it try to instill in students a craving for knowledge, self-discipline, independence and a desire to learn about other cultures. ISA is also a small school with the same advantages as the previous one: children are visible, there are not many students in the classes, and teachers have time to pay attention to each of them. In total, about half a thousand students from different countries study in it.

The school has a good material base: equipped classrooms and laboratories, there are several sports grounds where children can play volleyball, football, basketball or tennis. It has its own theater stage, ballroom, workshops for painting, sculpture and ceramics. The school is located in the Kifissia region, the study will cost parents 12,000 – 14,000 euros per year, and the registration costs 2,500 euros.

Byron College (The British International School)

This school bears the proud name of Lord Byron and fully justifies it: according to the school, the results of its graduates consistently exceed the UK average. Byron College is an accredited member of the Council of British International Schools (COBIS) and belongs to the British system. The students of this school do not just study in English, all education at the school is conducted in accordance with the national educational program of Great Britain.

This school is located in the Gerakas region and is really a very small school: there are only two parallel streams, where only 15-20 people study in each class. In total, about 300 children study at the school. The school pays much attention to the education of tolerance, justice and social responsibility in students.

Studying there costs 10,000 -12,000 euros, and enrollment costs 1,000 euros.

    Children’s Routes: Athens

No matter how many times the phrase “Greece has everything”, Kidpassage still managed to find a new meaning for it: in Athens, the Greek capital, there is something to show children.

In addition to majestic ruins and museums, which, as it seems at first glance, will only interest the familiar, Athens is ready to open up from an interesting side for kids who love entertainment, teenagers who respect the achievements of modern technology, and in general for all children who are ready to look around.

To enchant the children, this city has prepared many surprises, and in order to reveal them systematically, without missing a single one, we suggest you use the route that Kidpassage has developed especially for trips to Athens with children.

    1. Day 1 Tourist train, main museums of Athens
    2. Day 2. Luna Park, Museum of Nature
    3. Day 3. Zoo, souvenir shopping

Day 1: Athens Happy Train, Acropolis,

Parthenon, New Acropolis Museum, Syntagma, National Gardens

You can start getting to know the ancient city even before your trip here – by reading with your child the articles of the children’s encyclopedia dedicated to Greece and ancient Greek myths: then during the tour your child will not get confused in the names of gods and heroes.

But if there was no time, let the city open up to you during a sightseeing trip on one of the tourist trains running through the historical part of Athens.

An hour’s journey past the most significant objects of history – the Acropolis, the Temple of Zeus, Zappeion, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the Arch of Hadrian, the Areopagus, the Pnyx hill, the ancient Agora, the Roman market – will allow you to immerse yourself in the times when Athens was a major cultural center of Ancient Greece.

Among the ruins of the Agora, children may be interested in the Tower of the Winds – an ancient weather station, where the sundial and clepsydra were located, and a weather vane was installed on the roof.

Acropolis – the upper city, the fortified part of ancient Athens – is definitely worth a visit, because it was here that life was in full swing for several millennia BC, works of art revered even today were created, scientific discoveries were made, on which mankind still relies.

The rocky hill of the Acropolis used to be densely furnished with temples and statues of the gods – these structures have survived only partially, and the statues have mostly been replaced by copies.

However, the marble temple in honor of Athena, the Parthenon, is quite well preserved, and this massive building impresses even us.

The temple was destroyed and rebuilt, became a Christian church and a mosque, was plundered, but thanks to the restoration work, we can see the unique work of the architects of Ancient Greece.

Having looked around all of Athens from the Acropolis hill – the view from there is amazing – we go to the New Acropolis Museum: in its huge bright halls the originals of the creations of Greek masters are collected, and archaeological excavations are visible through the transparent floor.

A special surprise awaits children in this museum – at the entrance they will receive a special booklet for completing the quest: find 12 statues of Athena in the halls of the museum and mark them with stickers in the booklet.

The prize for the successful completion of the task is given immediately: the game “Memoriz” and a set of stickers with the image of Athena.

After such a rich educational program, you probably just want to relax, so we suggest you go for a walk in the National Gardens – a magnificent park in the city center where children can frolic on the playgrounds, and adults can wander along the alleys or sit in a cafe.

Since the Gardens are located next to Syntagma, or Constitutional Square, where the parliament building is located, we suggest you also watch the changing of the presidential guard at the monument to the unknown soldier.

Evzones are guards – an elite unit of infantrymen; a special form was developed for them with elements of a traditional Greek costume.

The changing of the guard takes place every hour, and on holidays and on Sundays the ritual takes on an even more solemn aspect, since a military musical ensemble takes part in it.

    Day 2. Port of Piraeus,

Planetarium, Goulandris Nature Museum, Allou Fun Park

On the second day, you can get out of the center of Athens and visit its immediate suburbs. One of the options for further travel is to go to the sea to look at the port of Piraeus. This is a major cargo-and-passenger port: both cruise liners and cargo ships come here all year round, yachts moor; this is where the trip to the islands begins.

It is interesting to note that Piraeus was already considered the largest port in the country in Ancient Greece and still has not lost this title.

Two port museums are dedicated to maritime affairs: the Greek Maritime Museum in Piraeus and the museum ship Georgios Averof in the harbor of Paleo Falira, just 5 km from the center of Athens. There is a planetarium not far from the port. It is considered one of the best planetariums in the world in terms of technical equipment.

Its main feature is a huge spherical dome, which shows films dedicated to space exploration and exploration. Its diameter is 25 meters, and its surface area is over 900 sq. meters.

Using state-of-the-art digital equipment, a picture of such clarity and volume is projected onto the dome that it seems like flying to the stars and traveling to other planets: this result is achieved thanks to a 3D format with a 360° view of the image.

The text of the film is in Greek and English, but even without knowing the language you can be impressed by the stunning video effects.

The second option to continue the excursions is a trip to the suburb of Kifisia, where the Goulandris Museum of Natural History is located. The quiet kingdom of plants and animals pacifies, and among the exhibits there is something to marvel at.

For example, the museum is justifiably proud of the huge skeleton of a Triceratops, a fossil lizard that lived on Earth 60 million years ago. And the entire museum collection is not at all a collection of faded dried leaves and dusty scarecrows.

Animals and birds are depicted here as they usually behave in nature, and the plants appear to be in full bloom, thanks to a special way of picking and drying flowers and leaves.

The Insect Hall is full of multi-colored butterflies, glossy beetles, lean mantises, and the Hydrobiology Hall has a wonderful exhibition of mollusks and crustaceans.

If such trips to the suburbs seem tedious to you (after all, you need to save energy for an evening walk, there are special plans for it), after the Military Museum you can go to Lycabettus Hill.

Firstly, there is a wonderful park. Secondly, this is the highest point of Athens, and extraordinary views of the city open from there. Thirdly, climbing a hill on foot or taking off on a funicular is not an easy choice, both walking and climbing in a trailer are interesting in their own way.

Let’s leave the funniest entertainment for the evening – the Allou Fun Park (it is closed in the morning). Here they are ready to cheer and give a lot of impressions to both kids and adults.

Many attractions even exist in duplicate, small ones for children, large ones for their parents. For the youngest visitors, there is a separate Kidom amusement park.

Among the entertainment – a huge Ferris wheel, American mountains, rafting, autodrome and much more.

Day 3. Zoo, shopping and buying souvenirs

On this day, we suggest planning a trip to a calm and shady zoo. At first it was a bird park, where birds from all over the world were collected.

Now there are also animals that have settled in spacious enclosures. In the zoo, you can see many funny scenes: how bears splash in a pond, how a small hippo grazes solidly next to its mother, how a marmot digs a hole.

And there is also a dolphinarium – the performances of these animals never leave the audience indifferent.

And as our trip comes to an end, we need to think about souvenirs. Their abundance is in the areas of Plaka and Monastiraki: there you can buy anything you like, from pharaoh caps to bagels with sesame seeds.

There are also many cozy cafes on Plaka, and the Monastiraki market is the best place to buy olives, cheeses, Greek sweets and other food products.

    • Souvenirs and gifts from Greece

Ermou’s long pedestrian street is almost entirely made up of brand name shops; luxury shops are located in the Kolonaki area. Among the purchases, be sure to include a small thing that reminds your child of a trip to Athens: a tiny model of a trireme, a magnet with a view of the Acropolis, or something else.

Education in Greece. International schools in Athens – Tranio.Ru

The education system in Greece is divided into three levels: primary, secondary and higher. Each of them consists of two sublevels. A child of any nationality living on the territory of Greece is required to receive primary education and complete the first stage of secondary education. In state institutions, education at these levels is free.

    Primary education

A child can be sent to kindergarten from the age of 2.5. This is not necessary, but many parents send their children to a preschool, as this gives adults the opportunity to go to work, and the kids get the first knowledge, develop learning skills and relationships with other children. Most children start going to kindergarten two years before entering school, from 4 to 6 years old.

In order for a child to get a place in a kindergarten, you need to collect a package of documents: an application for admission to a kindergarten, a birth certificate, a medical card with information about vaccinations, a certificate from a dentist, and a document confirming the address of residence or registration. All documents must be translated into Greek.

The next stage is the elementary school, which will last six years. In order for the child to be enrolled in school, parents will have to collect the same package of documents as at the previous stage, adding a certificate of attendance at kindergarten. Submission of documents to the school lasts from June 1 to June 21.

After school, schools organize leisure activities for students: sports and music sections, foreign language classes or a theater group Photo: bilisanas / Depositphotos

For foreign children, special classes for 9-17 people often open – there most of the time is devoted to studying the Greek language. In parallel, children attend other classes, where knowledge of Greek is not required. The main goal is to integrate the child into the learning process. If there are not enough such students to form a group, the school organizes an “extension” – up to 10 hours of additional Greek classes per week.

Students do not receive grades for the first two years, in third and fourth grades a child may receive an A (excellent), B (very good), C (good), or D (almost good). From the fifth grade, children switch to a ten-point grading system: 10-9 points – “excellent”, 7-8 – “very good”, 5-6 – “good” and 1-4 – “almost good”.

    Secondary education

Secondary education is also divided into two stages: basic secondary – gymnasium – and complete secondary – lyceum or vocational school. Education at each of the stages lasts 3 years, at the evening form of education at the school – 4 years.

Normally, the child is automatically enrolled in secondary school, but if the family has changed residence, then parents must provide a certificate of primary education and a document confirming the address of residence or registration to the new school.

There are different types of secondary schools: religious, sports, music, special schools for children with disabilities, even schools for adults who failed to complete secondary education in their youth.

Children over the age of 14 who work during the day can attend school in the evenings – classes are held every day and last 4-5 hours Photo: bilisanas / Depositphotos

The grading system in secondary school is 20 points, in order to move to the next course, you need to score 10 points. At the end of the gymnasium, the student receives a certificate that allows him to continue his education in a lyceum or vocational school, where, in addition to general education, students receive vocational training. At the end of each year, exams are taken: transfer in the first two years and graduation at the end of training. After successfully passing the exams, graduates receive a certificate of completed secondary education, with which they can enter a higher educational institution: a university or a technical educational institution.

    Education for children!

I have a child, should I send him to school?

    Yes!
School attendance is compulsory during the first 10 years of school, provided the child is of the appropriate age. 1 year of kindergarten, 6 years of elementary school (Dimotico) and 3 years of junior high school (Gymnasium) is compulsory, while 3 years of senior secondary school (Lyceum) is optional. Below you will find the structure of the education system in detail.

    1. Early childhood education (education and care):

α) Child Care Centers and Kindergarten
Children under 4 years old can go to kindergartens that operate in every municipality in the country. They are open from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm and they serve breakfast and lunch for children. Children can go to a municipal child care center, depending on the income level of the parents (or guardians). Supervision of child care centers and kindergartens is the responsibility of the local administration of the 1st degree, namely the City Municipality.. 1 .

    b) Preschool education in Greece starts at the age of 4 and children may be eligible for enrollment in kindergarten. Attendance is compulsory for children over 5 years of age.

Can anyone send their child to preschool?

Free access for children of any level of education, depending on their age, is an obligation of the Greek state. However, there are limited places available at Child Care Centers in big cities. Thus, some criteria have been imposed on kindergarten enrollment depending on:

    • Family income
    • Is the family large (3 or more children)
    • If the child is from an incomplete family (single parent)
    • Other criteria that may differ from municipality to municipality

Note: the exclusion of children of immigrant origin from kindergartens in the municipalities of the country is considered discriminatory, and you can report this to the competent authorities. You will find a detailed list of legal advisory services at the end of the guide you are holding.

You can find information and relevant listings for the rest of Greece at the offices of the municipality where you live.

    2. Primary education

The stage that follows after pre-school education is six years of compulsory attendance at primary school – Dimotiko, which belongs to primary education.

    3. Secondary education

    a) Junior Secondary School – Gymnasium:
three-year attendance at the Gymnasium is the last period of compulsory education, and is also a prerequisite for enrollment and attendance at general and professional lyceums. Evening gymnasiums run in parallel with day gymnasiums, attendance at which begins at the age of 14.

    b) Senior Secondary School – Lyceum:
Second level secondary education is optional, lasts 3 years and includes two branches:

      (i) general education (General Lyceum) and
      (ii) vocational education (Professional Lyceum).

The Vocational Lyceum offers two training courses: and

      a. Secondary education course
      b. Post-secondary (optional) course of study, “professional training class”.

Students study in general and professional lyceums at the age of 15. Evening General Lyceums and Evening Professional Lyceums operate in parallel with daytime lyceums, while the minimum age for admission to the Evening Professional Lyceum is 16 years.

    4. Higher education

Higher education is the last level of the formal education system and includes the University and Technology sectors. The university sector includes universities, technical universities and schools of fine arts, while the technology sector includes the Technological Educational Institutes (Τ.Ε.Ι.) as well as the Graduate School of Teacher and Technological Education (ASPETE).

Students can enter Universities, Technical Universities and Technological Schools (Τ.Ε.Ι.) through an entrance examination system, while Fine Arts Schools and ASPETE have their own entrance examination system.

There are no Intercultural Schools where I live. Where else can I go?

In addition to the work of the Intercultural Schools, there are also new programs in the regular school classrooms aimed at smoother and more equal integration of international students and remigrants, as well as students who are not natural Greeks and cannot meet the language needs of their age-appropriate class.

There are two Entry Classes (Ι and ΙΙ) and Training Class. .

These classes are available in schools that are integrated into the so-called ZEPs (Educational Priority Zones) that were created in
    2010 in areas where:

      a) low general educational index (general education of the population is low)
      b) high dropout of students (children leaving school)
      c) low access to higher education (few students enter the University or TEI)
      d) low socio-economic indices (poor territories)
      e) low level of prosperity and development indices
      f) high poverty risk index

    Specifically:

    1. In Entrance Class Ι::

    • There are students with little or no knowledge of the Greek language. The intensive Greek language program takes place with the full integration of students in the regular class in which they are enrolled.
    • Students attend classes in some subjects in their regular classroom, such as physical education, arts, music, a foreign language, or other subjects, as decided by the teachers’ association, in cooperation with the school counselor.
    • The criteria for attending these subjects in the regular classroom is the ability of students to attend these classes and meet all requirements.

    2. In the Entrance Class ΙΙ:

    • There are students with moderate knowledge of the Greek language, which can lead to learning difficulties. These students attend regular classes, but are also supported with language instruction outside of their regular classes.
    • The Teachers’ Association, in collaboration with the school counselor, determines the instructional hours during which students will be given language instruction outside of their regular classes, in the introductory class, depending on their learning needs.
    • – The Introductory Class ΙΙ Program will be adjusted around the concept that students should attend more hours of instruction in their regular classroom in order to be fully integrated into their studies as quickly as possible.

What is required to place my child in an introductory class?

In order for a student to join the introductory class, you must:

      – The student must pass examinations that can assess

Ι) the level of knowledge of the Greek language of the student in order to add him/her to either Entrance Class I or Entrance Class II.
ΙΙ) the student’s ability to join the introductory class program.
    • Parent’s statement that he/she wants his/her child to join the introductory class.

Note: Students can stay in the introductory class Ι for a maximum of one year, while in the introductory class ΙΙ for a maximum of two years (ONLY in exceptional cases the period can be extended to three years). Students who attended introductory classes and then joined regular classes or completed two (or three) years of introductory classes can no longer return to them. Further support for their language and learning skills can be provided by the Training Classes.

    3. Teaching Classrooms

The decision of the teacher’s association, in accordance with the recommendation of the principal, is required for the operation of the Teaching Classrooms.

    Teacher association decision includes:

      a. Names of students who join Training Classes
      b. Names of teachers who will teach in the Study Classes.
      c. Weekly schedule.

    General goals of ZEP schools:

    • development of comprehensive and flexible educational programs for the successful schooling of students from disadvantaged social groups
    • implementation of educational activities of differentiated inclusive education in alternative learning conditions in kindergarten, primary and secondary school for learning achievements and the comprehensive development of compulsory educational goals
    • Strengthening language and cognitive learning and developed abilities to ensure success in school and provide equal learning opportunities for all students, regardless of their socio-economic and cultural backgrounds
    • facilitating the transition from kindergarten to primary school, from primary school to secondary school, and the smooth transition of children to elementary school
    • prevention and management of social phenomena of underachievement, school violence and student dropout
    • development of cooperation between schools in each zone of educational priorities, among schools of the same level, different levels of compulsory education, as well as between schools and the local community
    • reconstruction of the infrastructural and educational aspects of the school environment
    • development of a network of preschool education for timely compensatory intervention in preschool institutions ZEP through child care centers and kindergartens

The operation of these programs is subject to the principles of intercultural education. Their main tool is to recognize, nurture respect for and acceptance of the linguistic and cultural diversity of students and to benefit from this diversity in the interests of the entire educational process.

The main objectives of these programs are:

      a) Individualized language and learning support for students
      b) Cognitive and cognitive support for students
      c) Development of an intercultural climate in the school
      d) Strengthening the cooperation between school and family

2 : The Institute was introduced by art. 26 L.3879 / 2010 and aims to encourage the equal integration of students from areas with low educational and socio-economic indicators in the education system (especially in primary and secondary education).

My child is having difficulty in school because his/her Greek is not good.

    What to do?

Β) Intercultural schools, elementary grades, classes for learning disabilities
In addition to the general structure of the Greek educational system, some municipalities, in accordance with the needs of the immigrant population, operate Schools of Intercultural Education that meet the educational needs of children who are not natural Greeks and / or come from places with different cultural traditions. Basic principles of intercultural education:

    1. Recognition of the equality of cultures and their interaction.
    2. Equality of educational capital of people with different cultural traditions.
    3. Ensuring for all the right to equal opportunities in education and in life.
    4. Cultural development of people as the starting point and goal of intercultural pedagogy.

Can I go to school as an adult or if I have not completed 12 years of schooling in my home country or Greece?

Yes! – This is what Second Chance Schools (SCS) are for

Second Chance Schools are public adult education schools. They are addressed to citizens over 18 who have not completed compulsory secondary education.

The total duration of the program is 18 months, namely 2 school years (September to June). Upon successful completion, this is the equivalent degree to the graduation from the Gymnasium.

The curriculum differs from formal education in terms of content, teaching methods and student assessment. The weekly schedule consists of 25 hours and classes are held in the afternoons (with the exception of schools operating in prisons where courses are offered in the morning), from Monday to Friday. Courses taught:

    • Greek
    • Mathematics
    • English
    • Computer Science
    • Social education
    • Environmental education
    • Natural sciences
    • Cultural and aesthetic education
    • Career counseling

Counseling services, which include a Career Counselor and a Counseling Psychologist in each school, are one of the innovations of these schools.

Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of basic skills and the development of personal skills. The acquisition of general knowledge, the use of new technologies, the study of a foreign language and vocational counseling significantly improve access to the labor market.

Where are Second Chance Schools located?

There are 58 second chance schools throughout Greece, 7 of which provide for the needs of prisoners. You will find a detailed list and additional information on the website: http://www.inedivim.gr/index.php/sde

Can I train as an adult (over 18 years of age) in a worker’s trade?

Yes! S Several public and private organizations are involved in the education of adult citizens in Greece, such as Second Chance Schools, which operate under the umbrella of the Foundation for Youth and Lifelong Learning (INEDIVIM). Another facility that provides adult education is OAED 3 (which organizes educational programs for the unemployed).

Public and private vocational training institutes (Ι.Ε.Κ.) 4 and organizations such as Κ.Ε.Κ. (Vocational Training Centres) and Κ. Ε.Ε. 5 (Adult Education Centres) are also active in the areas of adult education and training. These centers often provide educational programs for vulnerable or socially excluded groups, such as the unemployed or immigrants. The EC and CE programs are funded by various bodies that promote the relationship between education and employment, or encourage integration policies and do not require tuition fees.

In addition, several of the proposed programs are subsidized through policies related to the relationship between education and work. In these programs, upon completion of the training cycle, students are placed as interns in jobs corresponding to their courses. This type of training with “vouchers” is subsidized and the interns are paid for their work, but the remuneration is much lower than what they would receive if they worked normally in this company.

You can find a complete list of Κ.Ε.Κ. which are valid in the country on the site: https://www.voucher. gov.gr/kek/index/pid/1 where you can search for ΚΕΚ/ΚΕΕ vocational training in the place where you live.

I have a higher education certificate from another country, what do I need to do to get it recognized in Greece?

DOATAP (Greek National Academic Recognition Information Center – NARIC) is the organization responsible for the recognition of diplomas and degrees (undergraduates, postgraduates and doctoral students) from countries other than Greece. You can find useful information on the website of the organization (http://www.doatap.gr/) where you can see educational institutions recognized in Greece, download applications for recognition and equivalence of diploma, degree and grades, find lists with the necessary documents and fees payable for the passage of the relevant procedure. Due to the fact that university or technology degrees and degrees are considered on a case-by-case basis (especially those that are not recognized), you should visit the website of the organization or agency to obtain information about your case.
