My daughter went to Kids on the Go full time for just under 3yrs. She is now in first grade but still goes there on school holidays as well as in the summer. She looks forward to days off just to go see Missyand her friends there. This is like her home away from home. Missy is exceptional with the children. I understand how hard it is to leave your child at daycare, but I never worried or felt guilty for leaving my daughter here. There were actually many times when I would get there for pick up and she would not want to leave! I highly recommand Kids on the Go!!…

“I did not take other people’s places in the Russian national team”

Cross-country skiing

  • Andrey Shitikhin

    Championship

Skier Anna Bolshunova was hated by many, even when she was Zherebyateva and was not married to Alexander Bolshunov. In an exclusive interview with “Championship”, Anna told how she learned to cope with such pressure, how it affected Alexander, how often she and her husband throw out emotions at each other, and how their daughter Eva changed their lives.

It turned out to be a good family interview. Sometimes Alexander Bolshunov himself would cut into the conversation with jokes.

“Everyone has haters, you can’t get away from them”

– Anya, when you yourself ran and were in the national team, just waves of hate were sent to your address: “Ah, Zherebyatyeva was again included in the national team, this is all because of Bolshunov only.” Was it embarrassing?
– I did not take other people’s places and was in the national team exactly as long as I got there according to the results. The 2020/2021 season, which became my last, I ran to the Tour de Ski. I ran the sprint qualification in Switzerland and realized that I simply couldn’t run any further. And that is all. I tried to ignore the hate.

– Did it hurt you? Now, after all, when you first became an analyst at the CSP, and now a team specialist, the same thing is happening.
— I have learned not to notice such things. The support of family and loved ones helped a lot at the time. Everyone has haters, you can’t get away from them. What’s the point in paying attention to them?

– Didn’t want to cry from such pressure? “Why me again?”
— To be honest, I kept all my emotions inside, never showed out what was going on in me.

– It’s much more difficult than just yelling at someone and throwing everything out.
– She’s coming off on me. Don’t believe when she says she keeps everything inside. We stand at attention at attention every day ( Alexander Bolshunov intervened in the conversation with a laugh).
– Yes, it’s rare, damn it. It doesn’t exist anymore, of course. It used to break sometimes, but that was a long time ago.

— And it went from you to Sasha, right? How did he react? Raging?

– Of course not. He just said that I should generally skip such things and say, like him – goodbye. Over the years, you get used to this and it becomes easier to deal with it.
– Yes, I told her that there are many fools, and she is alone (Bolshunov again burst into the conversation with a laugh).

– Anya, did you feel the attention of journalists, bloggers, or was all attention focused on Sasha?
— Yes, he is always the center of attraction. I don’t even remember that journalists were interested in making material with me, to learn something from me, and not from rumors. Many times I saw some materials based on gossip and speculation. Guys, why didn’t you ask me? I would explain any situation. Did someone write about why I actually graduated? Again they came up with that only in order to do nothing and be next to Sasha.

“I thought, why am I suffering so much?”

– Well, I know that the reason is the injury. Are you ready to share the details?
— Indeed, the injury was the cause. And she got out quite sharply. We couldn’t understand what was happening. I no longer feel the body the way I used to. My tech is broken. And one fine spring evening, my neck hurt so badly that I could no longer endure it. She asked Sasha to anoint my neck with an anesthetic ointment. He began to smear and was horrified: “Anya, you have scoliosis there.” After all, many of the doctors worked with me, but it did not get better. And this reason was not seen. It also turned out that my right leg was one and a half centimeters shorter than the other.

— So, you discovered this problem and continued to train?
— Yes, I have been running for more than a year and a half, training through pain. When I came to the doctors with a specific problem, they said that the pain would remain, since the process was irreversible. I tried to work in the summer with the hope that it would get better in the winter, but it did not get better. I was so tired of fighting … After all, you know what loads Yury Viktorovich Borodavko had, I did them, but there was no result. She fought, fought, but in the protocols she was further and further away. In the end, I thought – why am I experiencing such torment? Then I decided to finish.

– It is clear that she said this to Sasha. Was he happy?
– Not really.

– What, didn’t you jump up to the ceiling that the woman you love would no longer endure such pain?
— ( Laughs. ) Yes, even now he would not mind if I still ran.
“Where are you going to run now, huh?” In half a year you can, yes (Bolshunov laughs).
– No no no. I do not want any more.

– But he was really not happy that you ended your career, or is this your joke again?

In any case, he didn’t say any words of encouragement.
“Well, you still need to understand. When you are in sports, and then abruptly quit . .. (T ut Bolshunov was already talking seriously. )
“It wasn’t drastic for me. I went to this, it turns out, for about two years and calmly accepted that I would not run anymore. I ran that same sprint on the Tour de Ski – that’s all. I told this to Yuri Viktorovich, Elena Valeryevna. Well, I felt some relief from the fact that everything was over, that there would be no more of these torments, from which you get wildly tired. I didn’t even think about what would happen next.

– Until the moment when the problem was discovered that did not allow you to grow as a skier, did you have sports goals? After all, you performed successfully at the junior and youth levels. It just turns out that you stopped growing, and your future husband became the best skier in the world.
— Of course, they were, like all athletes, probably. I wanted to compete in the Olympics. But in 2018, I was still small, and then an injury was discovered that simply cannot be run with. I regret the way my career turned out. I think if my problem had been discovered earlier, when it was possible to fix everything, I could still perform at a high level.

– No desire to return?
— If everything was in order with the body, I would probably consider this possibility. But when you know that you will step on the same rake – why? There is no point in this, and it doesn’t pull me to the ski track anymore.

“It was especially hard because of lack of sleep”

– When a child is born, a woman experiences serious stress – the child is in her arms for a significant part of the time, the regime changes. Is it comparable to what happened in sports?
– Well, there are other loads, but after the birth of Eve it was really hard. Especially due to lack of sleep, as she slept little. When you are an active athlete, then at least you can sleep – both at night and in the afternoon. And after the birth of Eva, it was very difficult to walk like a zombie. Mom came to help, sent me to bed, but I could not sleep.

– There were some fears before the birth, fears – but how, but will everything be fine, but does it hurt?
— When you are looking forward to it, there are no fears. Yes, and I wanted to have her birth as soon as possible, because Eva was big, large, it was just hard for me to walk with such a belly. Then I got a lot. Sasha stayed with me before the birth, he didn’t go to the training camp and every day he asked: “Well, when already, well, when.” Still, of course, it was exciting.

– When did you take her in your arms?
– Yes, they put it next to me right away. Such feelings cannot be described. You look at the ultrasound – there are just contours, nothing is clear. And here – a flattened edematous face ( laughs ) with a smart look. But she changed every day, she began to smile early.

– Did the birth of Eva divide your life with Sasha into before and after?
Yes. Everything else seemed so unimportant and so long ago! Was I a skier? Probably in a past life. Now she is constantly with Eve and almost always alone, only Sasha helps. But we ourselves chose this life. We see everything new that she learns: the first smile, the first tooth, the first step. Sometimes it can change overnight. Sasha did not believe at first, and then he himself drew attention to this. The birth of a daughter softened him greatly.

“Sasha loves borsch very much”

– Did you become seriously involved in nutrition after the end of your career?
Yes. But I carefully monitored my diet even when I was running. And then I began to study in detail, I studied it specially, I got a good base, but there is no time to complete my studies and receive the appropriate certificate. Now I watch Sasha’s nutrition. At home, sometimes I even pamper him with cakes, although this is generally far from proper nutrition, and at training camps and competitions I cook ordinary food. In the evening before the race – one meal, if there is no race – another.
– Yeah, the usual. Restaurants are resting. And don’t laugh, I’m serious ( turns on Alexander again).

– Last season, Alexander opened from a new side – as a cook. Did you teach him?
– Not much. Burgers – the right burgers – he makes at home, he can cook porridge for himself. Sometimes you can also indulge in some junk food, nothing will happen from one wrong burger.

– His culinary skills appeared only after the birth of his daughter?
— No, he used to cook before. Last season, it just so happened that he decided to talk about it.

— What does he most often ask to cook?
— Yes, I cook a lot of things, he generally eats everything. I hope he does it not because he has nowhere to go, but because it is really tasty ( laughs ). He loves borscht very much.

Are you proud that your husband is the best skier in the world?
— Don’t answer him about the best skier, it’s not true ( laughs Bolshunov )!
Yes, I am proud of my husband. But we are much more relaxed about his successes than many people think.

– How do you perceive his defeats? Does he take his frustrations out at home?
– It used to be like that, but now it is much calmer about everything. All thanks to my daughter. I try to calm him down, together with him I look for the reason why the race went like that, which led to such a result. But he really rarely splashes out emotions, this was most clearly manifested in Oberstdorf after fifty dollars at the 2021 World Championships. Then I was there and gave him all my attention. It seems to me that if I had not been there then, it would have been more difficult for him to endure and accept everything that happened.

“It is important for us that Eva has a full-fledged family”

– When you ran yourself, Russian athletes performed without restrictions. Now our skiers do not have the opportunity to compete at international competitions. Sasha was very worried about this?
— To be honest, when the Russian team was sent away from the World Cup, and Sasha called and said that the team was returning home, I was even glad. I was pregnant, hadn’t seen him since December and missed him a lot. And then we had Eva, and all other problems faded into the background. Her birth overshadowed everything.

– Is Sasha a good dad?
– Very good. He does everything, he helps me in everything.

– How much do you care about your husband’s results now?
– Always excited. We are always with him so that he is calm. It’s hard for him without us. We go to great lengths to always be together.

– When you and Eva are around, does he run better?
– Yes, he always runs well ( laughs ). But psychologically, he is much calmer when we are around.

— What is the most unusual gift he gave you?
– It’s hard for me to say. Sasha constantly gives something, he is a very attentive husband. So I’m not even surprised.

– And he talked about your unusual gift – an electric scooter.
— Oh, yes! Then the only time was when he arranged a quest for him to find a gift. But I also tried ( laughs ). Yana Kirpichenko and I dragged this box from the store with the last of our strength. I even have a video where we, two girls of heroic build, are dragging this huge box. As a result, we could not stand it, we called our servicers to help us. The guys drove up in a car, brought us to the hotel, and hid the gift in a truck. I packed this scooter secretly from Sasha. On the morning of his birthday, he began to guess riddles in order to find a gift, and Artyom Zhmurko just went for a scooter in a truck, which was 10 minutes away from us. Sasha coped with the tasks so quickly that I started to panic – we wouldn’t have time to bring it! The riddles had letters and numbers that had to be added together to get the number of the car in which the scooter was supposed to be. Artyom barely had time to bring!

– Are you a happy person?
— Yes! We are all together, and nothing could be better than this. I have a beloved husband, a beloved daughter, and everything else seems so small. It is very important for us that Eva has a full-fledged family, and not that dad will come, wave his hand and leave again. It’s a little hard to always be alone with her, but it’s our choice and we don’t regret anything.

Chapter 3 – How stupid… (Julia)

Chapter 3 – How stupid… (Julia)

Clutching my bag, I am sitting at a child psychologist’s appointment with my husband. We were urgently called.

And I can hardly hear what it is about. Because the bag seems hot to me like Chadov’s hands. And I’ve been having a hard time letting her out of my hands for days now.

I stayed there, in that moment…

Why is he doing this to me?

Do I regret my choice? How can you regret what was not.

Yes. “All limitations are only in our head.” It’s easy to talk about it to other people until you get stuck in real circumstances so that you don’t move! Like quicksand. And he – so strong and decisive – is not around when he is so needed. Then you are ready to lend a hand to anyone, just so as not to drown in this viscous terrifying abyss.

And Rob was there…

And after he supported me and pulled me out again – it’s just black ingratitude to look in Chadov’s direction again.

It is probably impossible to get everything at once. I got a son. And very happy.

But that doesn’t mean I don’t get hurt.

– Our kindergarten cannot take on such responsibility. We are very sorry. But the child needs serious help from specialists.

“And we’re sorry,” Robert rises. – Sorry about the situation.

Styopa is a runner. Of those children who experience a pathological craving for running away – from home, garden, just from an adult.

The only treatment I was offered was psychotropics.

Psychotropics for a six-year-old!

I can only weep at such a suggestion.

Robert, alas, does not see anything critical in this treatment.

Sometimes it seems to me that my son subconsciously fulfills my dream all the time – to escape!

I pick up Styopa in the next room.

I sit down in front of him and help him get dressed.

– Step… Well, why did you run away, huh? I begged you not to do that.

– It’s unknown… – he spreads his hands.

I took a word from somewhere. I think he even talks like his real father. And they don’t even know each other.

– Tell me, don’t you like this garden?

He goes to a private, very nice kindergarten. This is not our first or second kindergarten…

– Normal…

– Why then?

– Take a walk.

– Children are not allowed to walk alone. Is it dangerous!

– Why?..

We had this conversation many times.

– Someone can steal and offend you! I told you.

– I’ll give it to him! I have here … – pulls out a huge bent and rusty nail from his pocket.

Sharp!!

– God!

Grabbing his wrist, I take the nail.

– You didn’t get scratched by it? I look at my hand.

Maybe I’m too picky and paranoid mom. But I have only one child, and that is due to a miracle. There will be no others. And we have ordered a preventive vaccination against tetanus. Styopa is allergic to vaccine preservatives.

I throw out the damn nail, I wipe his hands with an antiseptic wipe.

Holding his hand, I lead him to our car.

Robert comes out to open the door for us. I sit with the child in the back seat.

– Mom… – he presses close to me from the ringing silence in the cabin.

Robert scolds me for constantly trying to soften any punishment for Styopa. But I can’t… And sighing, I look down. I hug my son.

– He won’t be like that again, right, Styop?

– We both know what will happen. I have a solution. Here…

He hands me a booklet: “Chipping dogs”.

– Anesthetize and implant a chip under the skin with a gun.

– I don’t want a gun… – Styopa whispers frightened.

– That’s for dogs, Rob.

– Are they shooting at dogs?! Styopa looks at the booklet that has fallen out of my hand.

– No, no, no! – I select.

– You’re lying! Styopa gets angry.

– It’s better to go through the procedure for dogs than to be caught next time in the river, – Robert presses me on the patient. – And how long have we been looking for him in the winter? What if he had frostbite on his hands and feet? Stepan, can you hear me? I told you that…

– Enough! We will not chip it. We’ll buy him a pendant with a chip. And hang next to the cross.

– Good… Robert sighs. – Now what are we going to do? I have an important meeting.

– I’ll take it with me.

– And tomorrow?

– And I’ll take it tomorrow, – I press Styopa harder.

– Will you take it the day after tomorrow? Yulenka … – patiently. – I suggest you go on leave without pay.

– No! I blurt out.

Work is at least an illusion of independence. If I ever run away… I should have a job! And what kind of doctor am I without practice? And so five years on maternity leave!

– For the sake of my son.

– No… I’ll find a way to match.

– Is work more important than Stepan? I support you completely.

– I told you I’ll find a way! – I snap nervously and harried.

We don’t use that tone in our family.

And Robert, glancing at me through the rearview mirror, twitches his eyebrow questioningly, with an accent.

– What example are you setting for your son?

It’s because of Chadov, I’m sure. Because of my handbag. I didn’t say a word about what happened in the elevator.

– I’m sorry… I’m just upset.

Then we drive in silence all the way to the hospital.

We brake in the parking lot.

– Hmm… Khasanov changed his car again, – Robert comments with displeasure. – Neurosurgeons earn good money here.

– The girls say that the patient gave him this car.

– Or – he asked her for help.

– No, it doesn’t look like Ruslan. If someone “asks”, then the whole hospital knows about it … – I bite my tongue.

Heard some unflattering gossip about Robert. But I don’t get into it. We do not discuss his income and money.

I look at this car without blinking. Khasanov is a friend of Chadov… And the threads in my soul stretch, finding the way to where it aspires.

Lord, I am an adult self-sufficient woman, why am I again trembling and sick like a young fool from his kiss?! Well, for what? … I almost learned to live the way I live. And I almost accepted it.

– Did you like the car? – with cool curiosity. – We’ll buy better.

I wave away my gaze.

– It’s just a car. We have a good car.

– And it will be the best.

Robert is a little off on prestige.

I open the door.

– Have you forgotten anything?.. – softly.

No, I didn’t forget! I just do not want!

I am very grateful to Rob for his attitude towards me and Styopa. But in physics and chemistry, I always had a C grade with him. And after Chadov it is generally unsatisfactory.
