I didn’t really like the road there, there was the ominous Haast Pass, an unpleasant sharp turn of the serpentine, where just a month before my vacation, on a thunderous night, a small caravan with Canadians, a boy and a girl was blown away by a landslide. It was blown down to the bottom of the gorge, where the river is, and the girl’s body was later found, much downstream, but the boy is still missing, and people put stone pyramids at the waterfall in their memory.
After that landslide, they repaired the road there, strengthened the slopes, and the passage was periodically closed, and it was necessary to wait forty minutes until it was opened again – also for about half an hour. Actually, in this line for travel, this story was told to me by cheerful Irish backpackers, I then found it in the local newspaper.
In general, an eerie place, I was glad that I rolled out of this dark forest in the end to the ocean coast.
That evening the weather turned bad, but I had already seen all the most important thing that should be seen in all the sunny beauty and glory, so I was not very upset by the cloudy sky and rain, I wanted to get to one of the villages on 2 glaciers – either to the Fox glacier, or to Franz Josef, and spend the night there. As a result, she reached Franz Joseph, and stayed there, despite the completely inhumane prices in local motels.
The owner of the motel, an uncle of very retirement age, said that when he and his wife first settled there, in the 70s, it was a completely deserted and abandoned place, rare tourist maniacs got to their motel, and everything was completely, completely different. And there was a glacier – that’s when, 40 years ago, it was a glacier, with a capital letter Glacier! A strong, beautiful, and powerful stream was carried away into the ocean .

It turned out to be Westport, and I came to the glacier valley before anyone else, meeting only a ranger along the way, who every day goes to the glacier to inspect it for its condition, progress and safety of tourists. Then this information is posted on a board at the entrance to the information center.
The glacier turned out to be quite distant, somehow sloppy, covered with gravel and not at all the sparkling magical glacier that I imagined. But there is a valley, a river and mountains all the same – in any case it is very cool.

For the first time in all these years I saw a sunset in the ocean. Under the lighthouse
I sat and realized that here I was, reading all this blizzard about other people who had ships, islands, distant countries, winds and sails in my pioneer childhood near Moscow – other people who didn’t even have any reason to envy, because that it was all like another planet – here I am sitting under a lighthouse a dozen kilometers from the village of Westport, West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. And I watch the sun fall into the sea. And even though I always knew that I would be able to hold a conversation in heaven, which, as you know, only about the sea, I still every time, realizing myself on some such shore in Sydney, in Bombay, in Tokyo or in New Zealand I understand the impossibility of comprehending all these threads, all these connections, causes and effects, steps and stops, meanings and ornaments of human destiny.

Between cycling around Wonaka (yes, I finally learned how to ride a bike!), swimming in the lake and watching all sorts of movies from the nearest video store, I sometimes think high. Namely, about art.
A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to study at one of the art schools abroad. But I successfully refused this opportunity, deciding that the world of contemporary art was not for me. But drawing in my free time and going to art galleries seemed to me the best destiny. But deep down, I still doubt the correctness of the choice made.
Art schools won’t let me go. It just so happened that my neighbors in the New Zealand hostel study just in art. And I’m always very curious about what they teach and what they work on.
Moreover, I went to all the exhibitions of students of one of the most important art schools in Auckland. And after that I had rather mixed impressions.
I like that in New Zealand art schools they pay enough attention to modern trends and methods of work. Students are given the opportunity to try different materials, because art has long gone beyond brushes, paints and clay (I’m exaggerating here, of course). What’s more, students have access to good video and photo cameras, projectors, TVs, computer labs… Do whatever you want with them. And that’s great.
However, I was disappointed that in schools the main focus is only on conceptual works, which, as you know, are now more popular at auctions. The ability to draw and paint remains in the shadows. Yes, classical painting is not so interesting for hipsters and art critics, but the famous abstract artists of the 20th century were able to draw very well. They built their abstractions based on skills learned from classical painting.
