Interview: how Elena from Odessa opened the first Spanish international kindergarten with Russian language in Marbella. Spain in Russian

Elena Gatsenko – about the difference between Russian and Spanish kindergartens, about popularizing the Russian language in the world, about how to help a child fall in love with kindergarten and about her own kindergarten “El Campanario”, which combines three official languages and many cultures.

“I wanted to create something that is not here, to make the kindergarten the way we see it”

Our family made the decision to move 5 years ago. The main stimulus was the children, their future and the opportunities that they can get with a European education. We began to choose a place where there is good bilingual education and the easiest adaptation for both the baby and the teenager. I am from Odessa, therefore, in addition to educational programs, I was looking for the sea and the southern climate. Well, the temperament and rhythm of life of the inhabitants of Marbella and Odessa are very similar.

I graduated from Odessa State University with a degree in psychology. Specialization – children’s art and fairy tale therapy. Worked with special, problem children. At the same time, she opened a developing children’s center in Odessa, which was called “ABVGDeyka”.

When we moved to Marbella, there already existed a Russian-speaking kindergarten, but it was designed only for Russian children. The girls who organized it were forced to leave for Russia for family reasons. They called me and asked if I would like to buy their business. I thought for half a day and bought. Frankly, it was a complete adventure and “spontaneous purchase.” But I really missed working with children and decided that this was a “sign”.

In general, I am a typical Odessa “crazy” perfectionist mother. My son is 6 years old, my daughter is 14. In search of perfection, I went around, probably, a hundred kindergartens and schools, both in Ukraine and here. And when I got to Spain and saw the conditions in local preschools, my hair stood on end. Soviet and post-Soviet standards were very high. Therefore, for us today it is wild that a child can sleep daily … on the floor. We do not understand what non-diet and non-baby food is in kindergarten. Yes, Spain has a good education system, but there are many “buts”. And when I received an offer to buy a kindergarten, I thought, why not. I wanted to create what is lacking here, to combine European respect for a small person and our standards verified over decades and an integrated approach to a healthy environment.

I started reissuing documents and getting new licenses. Then it turned out that we are the only kindergarten in Spain with a full-fledged children’s bedroom: we have wooden beds in the room, they have natural bed linen, each child has his own bed. We change clothes for the kids during the quiet time, and the teacher is with them while they are resting, from 14:00 to 16:00, and in no case leaves the room. And in Spain, preschool children sleep on the floor, for example, in the gym, on mattresses and in the same clothes in which they run around the yard.

Our architects and designers worked on the creation of furniture and space. Each class at El Campanario is equipped with antibacterial lamps. I personally brought these lamps from Russia to equip audiences with them. In each room we laid parquet. In Spain, marble is laid everywhere, but small children under one and a half years old crawl and constantly sit on the floor.

We even motivated our parents with an action: “Bring the kids on time – get a kilo of tomatoes”

My youngest child went to Spanish Kindergarten when he was 8 months old. And one day his teacher sends a photo: “Look how your child eats well!”. I know that my child always has a great appetite. But when they send me a photo where he eats french fries … And in Spain this is the norm. In Spanish kindergartens, children regularly eat fried potatoes, sausages, pizza, incomprehensible soups – this is such a diet. Therefore, for me, a prerequisite was the introduction of the correct, dietary menu in my garden.

We have an individual approach not only in education, but also in nutrition. For example, a year ago we had children from Indian families, and in our kindergarten it is a tradition that on Friday we serve veal. And we also prepared chicken specially for them that day. Fortunately, healthy eating and eco-products are a global trend today, and we, with our Soviet dietary steam and boiled cuisine, are literally on the crest of a wave. And we supplement it with local products and useful novelties.

We even have our own garden and a large garden where the children grow vegetables together with our gardener. And when they see the results of their work, it is magic for them. Children plant potatoes, after three months they harvest, we give it to a restaurant, and there they cook these potatoes for dinner for us. And last year there were so many tomatoes, and everyone was already overeating them to such an extent that we even tried to motivate our parents with the action: “Bring the children on time – get a kilogram of tomatoes.”

Now the Russian language is being popularized in all countries of the world. About 5-6 years ago, the Russkiy Mir Foundation was created under the patronage of the President of the Russian Federation, specifically for the development and support of the Russian language in the world. Their goal is to make Russian the third official international language. And the foundation allocates funds for the creation of official Russian schools and distance learning centers in different parts of the world. A year ago, I submitted documents to the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation for the creation of a correspondence school based on our kindergarten.

We adhere to a multilingual education system, we study and actively use English, Spanish and Russian. Although Russian in our kindergarten is now, in fact, unofficial, despite the fact that I have already received a full program for teaching Russian, both for preschool age and for primary school age, and we are working on it. I hope that soon we will be able to receive Russian certificates and diplomas and pass state exams even in other countries. Even now, some private Spanish schools have introduced Russian as a foreign language. Now children from the senior classes have the right to choose the Russian language and take exams in it.

There are a lot of bilingual children in our kindergarten. In these families, mothers are mostly Russian-speaking, and fathers are foreigners. Moreover, not only Spaniards – there are English, Germans, French … But in a family with a Spanish dad, children usually speak their father’s language, because the family lives in Spain, the family has a grandmother, grandfather and numerous Spanish relatives. We all know that the Russian language is very difficult. Of course, mothers try to speak Russian with the child, but dad does not understand this language, and grandparents do not understand it, the same is true in shops, theaters, and playgrounds. Therefore, mothers often bring their children to us in order to preserve their language and culture.

We also have children from families who have nothing to do with the Russian language. There is a family where the mother is German and the father is Spaniard or the mother is Spanish and the father is American. And also the French, the English, the Estonians, the Arabs… It turns out that such children have 4 languages: they study three languages ​​with us, plus their native language.

Children switch very easily. They enter the audience and immediately understand what language to speak here. All our teachers are native speakers. We also have a full-time speech therapist for bilingual children who have a problem with the Russian language. The speech therapist corrects problems with pronunciation, because for the Spaniards, for example, it is very difficult to pronounce “zh”, “sh”, “u”, and it is difficult for the British to pronounce our “r”.

Bilingual children also start talking later. They can lag behind the average norm by six months or a year. If, for example, the mother is Russian and the father is Spaniard, then the child will simultaneously perceive the two languages ​​as native. Like a sponge, he absorbs all the words, so he starts speaking a little later, but in parallel in two languages. And for that, you need a speech pathologist. We are planning to find a speech therapist for the Spanish language in the near future.

We also have music classes in the kindergarten. After each semester we do reporting concerts. Every year we organize a New Year’s theatrical performance in three languages. We always celebrate holidays in three languages ​​and in the way it is customary in three different cultures.

The second semester ends in the spring and we organize a family holiday. We combine our March 8, Spanish and English Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day is also just around the corner. Children sing songs in three languages ​​about moms and dads, about the world, about family. This year the kids drew portraits of their mothers, it was very funny. I asked all the mothers to send me their selfies, and the children copied from the photo. Who painted on canvas, who on paper, and very small ones – decorated portraits, drawing flowers with their fingers.

We have both dancing and drawing classes led by a professional film artist. There is golf and tennis, but these are areas that are not included in the basic program. Golf is led by a French coach, who is among the top ten in Europe, with a Spanish assistant. He is the author and developer of a children’s golf program. Tennis is taught by a master of sports in tennis, an Argentinean, who also works with a Spanish assistant. There are also cooking classes on Mondays.

I call the kindergarten “the first job of a child”, because when children are brought to us, it is very important for us that the child goes through adaptation. Many of us remember our childhood tears when our parents went to work, and we were dragged by the hand to the hated kindergarten. In our garden, we make sure that the child comes to us with a smile.

First he comes for an hour, then for two, then for three. And when a child no longer wants to leave our kindergarten and asks his mother on the weekend when he will come back to El Campanario, it means that we have achieved our goal. To make it easier for the child to adapt, we explain to him: “Mom has a job, she will soon return for you. You stay here, but you also have a job: you need to draw a picture, surprise your mom by making fruit skewers in cooking class.” We explain that each person should be busy with his own business.
