Testimonials

Read what our long time customers have to say about our services!

Newf, the Newfoundland, began his ventures at Happy Tails 11 years ago when Steve and Debee kept dogs in their home. So, when the big facility opened, Newf was one of the first to set foot inside. He boards on many occasions and I never worry that his every need is not being met. The staff is loving and caring. He is, in fact, one lucky dog to have experienced Happy Tails.

Jane Fredman

My name is Calle and Happy Tails is THE BEST! I have been coming here everyday since I was born, and my brother Forbes was the very first dog at Happy Tails when it opened! I am very particular and everyone has always taken perfect care of me!

Calle Hoke

Happy Tails is the BEST home away from home for Posh & Dakota! Whether they are at Happy Tails for daycare or boarding we never worry, as we know they are receiving all the love, care and affection that they receive at home.

Dan & Sandy Johnson

Hershey has been coming to Happy Tails for almost 9 years and is well know to the staff. He comes in the door tail wagging and leaves the same way, content and tired! The facility is always clean and kept up to a high standard.

Suzanne Blow – St. Louis Children’s Commander

The first public kindergarten in America was organized in St. Louis.

Among the many priorities that St. Louis is proud of is that the first public kindergarten in America was organized by our city resident Susanna Blow. This event was the beginning of the creation of a system of preschool education in the United States.

Suzanne Elizabeth Blow was born in St. Louis in 1843. When a terrible fire broke out in the city, she was six years old. Her father’s house burned to the ground as it was in the middle of the fire. Susanna’s father Henry Blow was an educated man and a successful businessman. He built himself a new, large and beautiful house in the south part of St. Louis. Inside the walls were lined with marble tiles.

Heinrich Blow received guests of honor in his library, which contained many scientific and educational books. The father allowed the children to use the library if he saw their desire for science. (Library 20 years ago, furnishings exhibited in a separate room of the St. Louis History Museum.)

Suzanne grew up in the years leading up to the Civil War. Her whole family supported the supporters of the liberation of blacks. The girl attended the best private schools in the city, and also studied with a governess. At the age of 16, Suzanne went to New York, where she entered the school of Miss Haynes. Girls from wealthy families studied at this school. Suzanne studied with Miss Haynes for two years, but was dissatisfied with her education. She actively engaged in self-education, using her father’s library for this purpose.

Among the guests visiting Henry Blow’s house was General Ullis Grant. When Grant became President of the United States, he sent Henry Blow as ambassador to Brazil. The Blow family moved to live in this country. By this time, Susanna had learned Portuguese, which allowed her to become her father’s secretary. Her sister, rotating in the diplomatic environment, married a Russian count.

In 1871, while the Blow family was traveling in Germany, Suzanne came across the works of the famous educator Friedrich Fröbel. This scientist believed that the most important thing in the formation of a person in a new industrial society is his preschool education in a public kindergarten.

Susanna became interested in the ideas of Friedrich Fröbel. She visited several kindergartens where these ideas were introduced. And although Suzanne’s mother believed that her daughter should become a secular woman, the girl decided that the main thing in her life would be the work of a teacher and educator of preschool children.

Suzanne brought a lot of visual aids from Europe to work with preschoolers. Among them are six large balls painted in the main colors of the spectrum, cubes, cylinders and other objects that were supposed to help children master the concepts of color, volume, quantity, weight, etc. She prepared songs, games, entertainment that introduced children to examples of family and social life.

Where to start? Her father advised her to open a private kindergarten. But Susanna made a different decision. She created a kindergarten on the basis of the city school. Her father recognized her decision as the right one and, being a prominent public figure, turned to the head of the entire education system in St. Louis, William Harris, with a request to help his daughter in the implementation of her plans.

William Harris willingly responded to this request and became Susanna’s faithful assistant and mentor.

In public schools in St. Louis and other cities in America studied, mostly children of emigrants who did not have the opportunity to attend private schools. These children, who started working at the age of 11, were to be given a primary education by Suzanne’s kindergartens.

When the City of St. Louis became the owner of land in the Carondelet area, the City Board of Education built a new school in September 1873 for the children living in the area. The school was located south of Michigan Avenue and was called Des Peres School. One of the four classrooms of the new school was given to a kindergarten run by Suzanne Blow. The entire staff consisted of one teacher, who was paid for her work, and two free interns. Susanna herself did not receive any payment for her work.

Unlike other classrooms at this school, the kindergarten room was fun and inviting. At the tables, children learned to work with various materials: blocks, balls, cards with holes, threads, etc. More than a hundred years ago, this room looked just like a workroom in a modern kindergarten.

Suzanne developed a curriculum that she believed gave children the opportunity to learn and be happy at the same time. She tried to introduce children to world literature, reading them stories, poems, Greek and Roman myths, myths of the East, biblical traditions. She believed that these literary treasures would light the path to education for children.

Suzanne Blow also trained future kindergarten teachers. Her students traveled all over the country and spread her teaching methods to children. In 11 years, Suzanne Blow’s early childhood education system in St. Louis has grown from a pilot kindergarten at the school with 42 children to about 9,000 children in many schools.

Suzanne Blow was in poor health and had to leave St. Louis for the East Coast of America. There she continued to engage in social activities: she became one of the organizers of the International Union of Kindergarten Workers.

Susanne Blow has written five books on Frebelian parenting and many articles on child education. She taught at the Teachers’ College at Columbia University.

She died in New York on March 26, 1916. After the death of Suzanne Blow, the St. Louis Globe Democrat newspaper wrote: “The big commander has left us, but the soldiers continue to march …” Missouri
