AMERICA’S MOST ACCREDITED

We’re so proud!

Nationally only 10% of daycares are accredited – nearly 100% of our learning centers are. That’s a big difference,
and that means KinderCare kids are getting the very best. Here’s why.

SCHOOL-READY

What Learning Looks Like

Our talented early-childhood teachers set kids down the path toward becoming lifelong learners in a positive, safe, and nurturing environment.

Rancho Cordova KinderCare Programs

Infant Programs (6 weeks–1 year)

Leaving your baby in someone else’s care is a big step. Everyone at our
centers—most importantly, our naturally gifted infant teachers—will work with
you to make sure the transition goes smoothly. When you step into our infant
classroom, you’ll see how much we want your infant to feel safe, loved, and
ready to explore their world.

Toddler Programs (1–2 Years)

Everything in our toddler classroom is designed for little explorers. That’s
because a lot is going on at this age. When your child is wandering all over the
place, that means they’re learning and discovering new things every day. We’ll
help them explore their interests (and find new ones!) as they play and learn.

Discovery Preschool Programs (2–3 Years)

This age is filled with so much wonder and curiosity. That’s why we offer a ton
of books and toys and bring artwork down to kids eye level. Children in
discovery preschool also begin to learn how we all work together in a
classroom. Simple math and science, pretend play, and group play help them
get used to a more structured school setting.

Preschool Programs (3–4 Years)

This age is all about expression, when kids really start to form their own ideas
about what they want to play and how they want to create. Every day in our
preschool classroom, your child will explore science experiments, create
artwork, and play pretend—all the skills needed for their big next step:
kindergarten!

Prekindergarten Programs (4–5 Years)

When you walk into one of our pre-K classrooms, you’ll see artwork and
writing displayed around the room. Labels are everywhere to help kids connect
letters with words. You’ll also see pictures on the walls that reflect the families
in our community. Your child will also deepen their knowledge in language,
math, science, Spanish, and social skills.

Before- and After-School Programs (5–12 Years)

You can count on us to provide reliable care for your school-ager while you’re
at work, with safe transportation from our center to your child’s school and
back! Whether your child wants to start a drama club, build a volcano, or
create a comic book, they will have a place to follow their dreams. Your child
will start and end the day with a whole lot of fun!

School Break Programs (preschool, prekindergarten, and school-age)

Winter break, spring break, summer break—when school’s out (but you still need to work), you
can count on KinderCare to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that’s focused
on fun. We welcome children ages 5–12 during school break times and make sure they have a
sensational, screen-free experience they won’t forget.

Participating Child Care Aware Center

KinderCare partners with Child Care Aware® of America to offer fee assistance for
Active Duty military families and flexible support to fit their needs when care at a Child
Development Center on the installation is not available.

Learning Adventures – Enrichment Program

Cooking Academy™ (3 – 12 Years)

In Cooking Academy, kids learn new recipes from cultures around the world and
develop a healthy relationship with food. They’ll whip up everything from Southwest
rainbow lettuce wraps to pumpkin muffins, building their skills in STEM, communication,
and more along the way. And yes—little chefs get to eat their culinary creations!

Music Explorers™ (2 – 4 Years)

KinderCare families are already giving a standing ovation to our newest Learning
Adventures program: Music Explorers! Kids will learn to sing, move, listen, play
instruments, and even create their own tunes. Our original curriculum blends math,
science, social studies, literacy, and mindfulness (think yoga!) for a uniquely KinderCare
way of learning the foundations of music.

Family Stories

Don’t take our word for it. Hear what our families have to say about our amazing center!

  • I just want to say when I pull up to my KinderCare (Rancho Cordova location) it’s always clean and quiet. When I drop my daughter off at your facility I always walk away feeling relieved. I know she is in the best care and she is safe until I return.   I really enjoy the curriculum the school offers and I have to say 95% of the teachers are GREAT. I haven’t met everyone so I can only speak for the ones I have had communications with.   Your new director is awesome! She really has it together and I feel the center isn’t stressing (re: paperwork/parents non-completed forms) She has come up with a system and it’s working!!  I have been with Rancho Cordova KinderCare for over two years and I love the facility. My babies safe haven.

New faces of autism in Sesame Street, Power Rangers could help break stereotypes

On a sunny day on Sesame Street, Abby Cadabby asks her new neighbor Julia if she wants to play a game. Julia, a red-haired doll in a pink robe, doesn’t answer at first. Instead, she looks straight ahead as she swings, then moves to the grass to play with her Flufster stuffed bunny. Abby, puffed up and embarrassed, asks Elmo why Julia doesn’t like her very much. nine0031

“Julia sometimes acts differently because Julia has autism,” Elmo explains. “Abby can ask Julia to play again. Abby could have used fewer words and waited a bit. This usually works for Elmo.

A few beats later, three dolls are playing a game I’m spying and Julia wins soon.

The producers of Sesame Street said they created Julia to help explain autism spectrum disorders to millions of viewers and present accurate depictions of the condition on screen, refuting decades of what critics have called stereotypical portrayals of autistic people. In many households around the country with autistic family members, there is hope that Julia, along with the autistic Power Ranger featured in a new movie earlier this month, will change the way the next generation of children view autism. nine0031

According to Leonard Abbeduto, director of the UC Davis MIND Institute, which shows that showing an autistic child engaged in positive group activities can help children on the spectrum interact with their peers, as well as teach autistic children what to expect from friends and relatives. neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism.

“Students still lack integration in the classroom because teachers don’t know how often to support them, and children don’t necessarily understand how they behave and what they might need,” Abbeduto said. “If (children) know what autism is, they won’t be afraid of people who interact with the world in different ways.” nine0031

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a common diagnosis given to people often marked with unequally developed communication skills and other developmental traits. People with autism may avoid eye contact, not interact with people, focus on tasks, or repeat phrases and behaviors, among other differences. The prevalence of autism has increased in recent years, and the disorder now affects an estimated 1 in 68 children in the US.

Julia won’t appear on Sesame Street until April 10, but in preview clips, she speaks in fragmented sentences, usually only by request. She does not always greet other characters or answer their questions. She also claps her hands when she is excited and is very sensitive to loud noises, traits shared by some people with autism. However, she happily sings along to the show’s main song and plays hide-and-seek with Elmo. nine0031

Ava Neyer, from Rancho Cordova, said she looks forward to using Sesame Street to explain autism to her 4 twin boys, one of whom has autism. Eric, the more introverted of the twins, was diagnosed with the disorder at 17 months and finds it harder to make friends than Alan.

She said the new Sesame Street character would paint a positive picture of autism for Eric, while Alan and his autistic classmates teach that “different” doesn’t mean “bad. ” nine0031

“When my son starts kindergarten, I want the teacher and everyone to be aware of his diagnosis so that the children know how to communicate with him,” said Neyer. “If kids could see Sesame Street, if they could see people interacting positively with autistic people, I think that would really help him integrate.”

In one of the Sesame Street videos, Julia made a boe-boing with her mouth and jumped up and down enthusiastically, a typical behavior for some autistic children who enjoy movement and repetition. On a real school playground, students can tease a bouncing classmate, but on Sesame Street, the dolls follow Yulia and join in, creating a new playground called the boeing-boeing mark. nine0031

Kim Tozer, executive director of Sutterville Preschool, says she has seen more children with autism spectrum disorders in her class in recent years. They are sometimes ridiculed for playing differently or not participating in group games, she said, although she teaches her students to be patient with her autistic classmates. She said she hopes the new Sesame Street character will bring a message home.

“They don’t flow so easily in any aspect, be it noise or touch or how they process what’s going on. They’re a little different and the kids will understand that,” Tozer said of kids on the spectrum. “We can teach them, even at age 3 or 4, to be a little quieter or give them some extra time. He teaches tolerance when they are all together.” nine0031

Just as Sesame Street announced Julia’s debut, the makers of the new Power Rangers movie released last Friday announced that Billy the Blue Ranger is on the autism spectrum. They haven’t released more information about what traits the character has, although one Vox review notes that Billy has trouble reading people’s emotions and doesn’t get his fellow Rangers’ jokes.

John Matthias, from Roseville, said he was looking forward to inviting his autistic son, 15 Wesley, to watch the film. In particular, he is curious to see if Wesley, who has trouble making complete sentences but loves going to the movies, will hook up with the autistic character. nine0031

“His awareness of autism is there, but it’s very limited,” Matthias said. “He doesn’t really understand how he is different, or other kids on the spectrum are different. I’m a little excited when he sees the character and sees if he recognizes any similarities.”

Matthias hopes the film will at least help stop the bullying that many autistic teenagers experience. According to Research 63 from the Interactive Autism Network.

“Perhaps (children) will be less likely to do this if one of their superheroes has qualities they could play a prank on,” Mathias said. “So, all of a sudden, it’s not such a big minus.” nine0031

When most people think of autism in popular culture, they still remember the 1988 movie Rain Man, said Jack Gallagher, an actor and playwright from Sacramento whose 21-year-old son Liam has autism. Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman’s iconic film, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, helped raise awareness of autism, he said, but it’s also misleading.

“If I were to portray someone on the spectrum, I would portray them as a normal person with some weird social problems, not as someone who can count every toothpick on the floor or tell you every president’s middle name,” Gallagher said. referring to a scene from a movie. “For a long time, there were a lot of stereotypical qualities that were given to people on the spectrum, and now people are realizing that this is not the case. I hope these characterizations are more accurate than before.” nine0031

Advocates say bitmaps of autism can be difficult given all the different ways the disorder manifests. Some people with autism, especially those with so-called Asperger’s Syndrome, are known to be extremely intelligent but aloof (think Alan Turing from The Imitation Game). Others, such as Arnie in the 1993 film What Eats Gilbert Grape, have lower cognitive abilities and struggle to understand concepts such as safety and etiquette.

According to Alex Plank, a Los Angeles-based director, director and producer with autism who advises movies and TV shows, it would be impossible to write one character that encompasses all autistic traits. But creating more autistic characters of any race — as long as they’re not offensive — will help fight stigma, he said. nine0031

When Plank, now 30, began consulting on the 2013 television series The Bridge, which featured an autistic protagonist, he said that the actress, who was not autistic, was extremely serious when she played the character—one of several misconceptions with which it works erase.

“There is often a character who never smiles. And it doesn’t make sense to me – I smile a lot,” Plank said. “The other problem I see is that the character has no empathy. People often don’t realize that autistic people have empathy. They may have expression issues, but they have just as much, if not more, than anyone else.” nine0031

Neyer said she hopes the growing visibility of autistic people in pop culture will lead to new opportunities for them in the real world, where many autistic adults seek shelter in jobs or educational settings.

Sesame Street shows videos where kids join the world of autism, their games, and meet them where they are instead of trying to pull them out and make them act typical,” she said.
