Childcare in Harmony with Your Child

Childcare for Portland, OR.

Childcare from 6 weeks to Kindergarten.

Children need to move and sing and get dirty. They need open doors and open arms. They need to see how amazing the world is and to find their unique place in it. You’ve given them life. Now it’s time to help them find their rhythm and discover their “Wow!”

Children have a limitless capacity for compassion, gratitude, and open-mindedness. The care we provide helps them keep these gifts close and carry them throughout their lives.

We BELIEVE IN YOUR CHILD. READ WHY.

We know how important it is for you to hear about Wow & Flutterville from the people who know us best — our parents.

“The day I met Deanna, she hired me to photograph her Playgardens & I Couldn’t help but fall absolutely in love with them. I knew immediately that I wanted my children to go there because Deanna was such a kind soul that I knew would love & care for my children when I couldn’t be with them. What I didn’t know was how quickly my children would grow & flourish there, the amazing things they would learn, connections they would make, & skills they would come home with, be it new words for my 2 year old, or coping mechanisms for my 4 year old. I am forever grateful for the time my boys spent being loved on in the care of Deanna & her team at Wow & Flutterville.”

Taimani, Mother of Two Wow & Flutterville Friends

“There is emphasis placed on happiness, compassion, and emotional wellbeing, which align well with our values as a family.”

Meytal, Mother of Two Wow & Flutterville Friends

“I just wanted to let you know how much we love love love the girls’ teachers.

In both rooms, they are so loving and patient. They are so good at communicating with us and keeping us updated on interactions that we can then mirror at home.”

— Elle, Mother of Two Wow and Flutterville Friends

It’s that sound you hear when you play an old record, that bend in the pitch that lets you know the music is coming to you from a different time.

Children are like those records. They don’t keep time in the way we expect. They like to speed up and slow down. They experiment with their voices and thrill at new sounds. As teachers and caretakers, we love the music each child creates and the harmony of a whole class wowing and fluttering together throughout their day.

“We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there ‘is’ such a thing as being too late. This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.”

— Martin Luther King Jr.

Infant Classroom – The Ocean Room (6wks – 12 months)

Meet the teachers

We realize that young infants thrive on the warmth and caring from a close relationship with caregivers. This security prompts infants to explore and begin to shape their identity. It is important for babies to create bonds with caregivers and for the caregiver to become extremely in–tune with the baby’s needs. Our staff have many years experience working with infants and are very dedicated to getting to know each infant individually to exceed their needs.

A baby’s brain is a work in progress. The outside world shapes its development through experiences that a child’s senses — vision, hearing, smell, touch and taste — absorb. The development of a child’s brain holds the key to the child’s future. Our teachers use touching, talking, reading, smiling, singing, counting and playing with children will help a child’s brain develop and nourishes the child’s potential for a lifetime.

Daily reports are provided to parents on each day went. We feel it is extremely important for parents to be able to closely track feedings, nap times and diapering schedule for infants.

Stephanie Moyer
Lead Teacher – Infants

I graduated from Rivier College in Nashua, New Hampshire in 2008 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development/Early Childhood Education/Special Education. During my time at Rivier College, I worked with children between the ages of birth and 3rd grade.

Establishing a relationship of trust is the most important tool we can use to enhance growth and development of our infants! We do that through exceeding the babies’ needs by showing them that we are there for them, to nurture, comfort, play and learn!

I had 3 years experience in an infant classroom in Manchester, NH before starting at The Academy 7 years ago.

Sue LeRoux
Co-Teacher Infants

My degree is in Business and I have additional schooling in Early Childhood Education.

I moved to Saco in 2013 after living in Durham, NH for 16 years. During those years I was a full time mother of two daughters who are now grown and living on their own. I worked in a childcare center in Portsmouth, NH for 7 years, which has given me the opportunity of caring for and nurturing many pre-school children.

I have enjoyed working at The Academy since October 2014. I started in the Farm room with the 1 year olds and moved to the Ocean room in March 2016. I love caring for the infants!

Alex Brown
Co-Teacher Infants

I was born in Calais, Maine but grew up in Westbrook. When I was 14 I moved to Limerick and graduated Massabesic high school class of 2017. Ever since I was little I have loved babies and have always wanted to work with kids. I started as a nanny as soon as I graduated. In 2018 I started at a daycare center in Buxton and worked there for 2 years. I started here at the academy July of 2021 and worked until November when I had my son Greyson. After staying home with my own baby for 7 months I couldn’t wait to get back to work here with all the kiddos!

As part of a series of articles about fellow citizens who moved abroad, Lenta. ru publishes Victoria from Yevpatoria’s story about how she changed states in the United States in three years and settled in the “city of the silver dollar.”

I was born in Evpatoria. In her youth, she moved to eastern Ukraine, where she graduated from Kharkov University of Economics with a degree in computer technology. In 2013, she first came to America under the Work and Travel program, and returning to the States became a fixed idea. nine0005

In my fifth year, I was looking for the most suitable program for this. The only thing that stopped me was a student visa: I managed to get it only the third time. As soon as I got the necessary documents, I immediately flew away – to the program for in-depth study of the English language.

      A start has been made

The courses lasted three weeks, during which time I managed to fall in love with this country completely and understand: this is what I need. She threw away the return ticket for the plane immediately, cutting off the path to retreat. I had a visa for three years, but only on the condition that I study, so after the course it became invalid. For almost a year I had to live in the status of an illegal immigrant, in parallel consulting with lawyers so that they would help me with legalization. nine0005

On the day of the end of the course, I bought a ticket to Branson, Missouri, the city where I had previously been under the Work and Travel program, because there were still acquaintances there. Spent two years there. It was not easy, I took on any job. But it didn’t bother me.

      St. Petersburg, USA

Then I decided to move to Portland (Oregon). It is one of the greenest cities in the United States. By the way, Portland is also called a hipster city. It’s certainly not as big as Los Angeles or New York, which I don’t like because of traffic jams and a huge number of people. nine0005

Portland’s climate is similar to Russia’s, we don’t notice much difference. Americans consider it a very rainy city, it’s like St. Petersburg for Russians. I have a feeling that we are a couple of days late with the weather from Russia. In Russia, showers, so the day after tomorrow – with us. But it’s worth driving just a couple of hours by car towards California, and you find yourself in heat.

      Dream job

In Portland, I almost immediately got a job at Intel – by profession, a computer engineer. It wasn’t that hard, I just sent in my resume and got through the interview. Despite the Kharkov diploma, I was accepted. All that was required was knowledge, skills and the fact of having a diploma. I recently read the description of my vacancy in the Moscow office and was surprised how Russian companies overestimate the requirements. In Russia, I would not even try to apply for such a job. nine0005

      Responsive locals

Even on my first visit to the US, I was struck by the responsiveness of Americans. I know that in any situation they will try to help me with deeds, and not just with words. If you get stuck on the road in the middle of the night due to a car breakdown, then everyone stops, offers help, even to the point that they can bring hot coffee. It’s true, I’ve experienced it. At home, this situation would scare me.

Although in places where there are more Mexicans and Russians, it is customary to help others, but for the benefit of oneself. This is typical of our mentality. In general, I came to the strange conclusion that Mexicans are very similar to Russians. nine0005

      “Live and learn”

I traveled with school knowledge of English: I could tell everyone’s favorite text about London and talk on simple topics. But naturally, in such an environment, I spoke fluently, because in situations where the phone or debit card was blocked, one way or another I would have to explain what happened. I was embarrassed to speak in my broken language, but then I realized that I could not hold out for so long, and I began to enter into a dialogue myself. This helped me.

I now communicate with the locals in English, although I still cannot say that I am fluent in it. I feel like there are no limits to language learning. Since I work in the IT field, I constantly come across new terms and sometimes I don’t understand what they want from me. But they react calmly to this, they try to explain everything in an accessible way to me. nine0005

In general, visitors are treated well here. But there have been instances in Missouri where locals have resented the fact that newcomers are taking their jobs, although few of them would go to work in positions held by migrants. In Branson, many asked where I got such an accent, in Portland it is much easier, no one pays attention to it.

      American Savings

For the first two years I lived in Branson, where the average price for a one-bedroom apartment with good views and quiet neighbors is $500-600 per month. In Portland, the same apartment will cost $1,200. In Missouri, a good home can be purchased for $60,000, and in Oregon, for $250,000. nine0005

A car is not a luxury here, but only a means of transportation. Gasoline prices vary greatly: in Missouri – $ 1.2 per gallon (4.5 liters – approx. “Lenta.ru” ), in Oregon – $ 2.5, but in California you will have to pay about three dollars.

      Tax system

In the United States, federal taxes, local taxes (various additional taxes imposed by local governments of counties and cities), and the state tax in which you live are deducted from every paycheck. As a result, about 80 percent of the salary remains. nine0005

49 states have a tax on the purchase: the prices indicated on the counters do not match what will be required of you at the checkout. Everyone knows about it, and this is not a surprise to anyone.

In Missouri, I encountered people who didn’t want to work in the winter. They filled out a form stating that they had been refused work in several places at once, and received unemployment benefits from the state for three months. But there is another side: after they found a job, taxes for them increased. In fact, they returned the money received to the state. nine0005

      Credit karma

It’s no secret that America lives on credit. Here everyone is trying to improve their credit history: they take loans for small household items and pay them on time. The Credit Karma application is very popular, showing all purchases and the status of loans. The higher the credit level, the lower the interest rate. Only after pumping their consumption history to the highest level, Americans acquire housing at a minimum loan rate. But there is also a downside to living on loan: often people get loans and stop controlling their expenses, leaving in a big minus. nine0005

      Young old people

With a good income, you can count on a decent pension. There is a very interesting 401(k) pension plan. You get a job, connect to this plan and save money from your salary for retirement. Employers can also voluntarily contribute funds to the same accounts. As a result, this tax-free account is added to the official pension.

Sometimes it seems to me that for Americans, life begins only in retirement. Among the elderly, cruises are very popular, and they go on them with whole companies. In our neighborhood, my grandfather rides a bicycle with a GoPro camera because he just likes to take pictures of people around him, and my 60-year-old colleague is going to buy a trailer and, in retirement, travel with his wife across America. nine0005

Photo: provided by the hero of the material

      To the doctor

Medical insurance is obligatory. It costs me from $ 30 a month, while the dentist and ophthalmologist are not included in the basic insurance. But it is impossible to live without it, because medical care is very expensive.

When I first arrived, I was in no hurry to purchase insurance. The case helped me in practice to appreciate its advantages. My glasses broke and I needed to have my vision checked. Without insurance they asked me $400, with insurance it cost $40. But the quality of service is the highest: I was checked on 10 different devices, and a doctor was automatically connected, who even a month later called and found out about my well-being. nine0005

      Russian side of America

Of course, there are Russian shops here. In one of them, an American friend of mine bought smoked fish and wondered for a long time how we could eat it. We gave our friends buckwheat and borscht to taste. Borscht was a discovery for them, because here they mostly eat cream soups, and the Americans did not understand how there could be so many vegetables on one spoon.

Some Americans I know have been to Russia. They said that it was fun and sincere, but once is enough. nine0005

      Refutation of stamps

A healthy lifestyle is now being promoted in every possible way in America. New gyms are opening all the time and they are all full. This also affects nutrition: organic food is very popular, which costs a little more than regular food.

Love for an active lifestyle is manifested in everything. Apart-complexes with a swimming pool and a gym, free of charge for residents, have been built. Many people ride bikes to work. Buses are equipped with special bike racks. This is considered par for the course, especially in the coastal states. nine0005

Photo: courtesy of the hero of the material

      Family Americans

The most valuable thing for Americans is the family. My friend worked as a director of a restaurant chain and quit only because he didn’t see his children much. Then he worked in a bank with a salary several times less, but he spent more time with his family.

On Thanksgiving Day, all relatives gather at the table. Up to 30 people from different states can come together. New Year’s Eve is almost never celebrated. The main holiday is Christmas. The whole country is very beautifully decorated, especially the areas with private houses. Each house is beautiful in its own way, and it seems that the owners compete with each other. Locomotives drive around the site, thousands of lights burn, and cartoons are broadcast on the wall.
