Hello, we are Lina and Nate Parrott and the proud parents of two teenagers, as well as our youngest, a 9-year old son who attends 4th grade at Partin Elementary. All of them have attended Primrose with us over the years. As parents who have experienced the challenge of finding prominent child care for our own children, we were thrilled to be able to give families in Oviedo, Florida and its surrounding communities an accredited education model that is proven to nurture children and provide them with opportunities to socialize and learn. The decision to open the Primrose School of Oviedo 11-years ago was a natural one for us. Its founded on our passion for children, education and our entrepreneurial spirit. As a UCF graduate, I have lived in the area for more than 25 years, and it was important for Nate and I to launch an endeavor in the same community where we live, work and play. Nate and I are committed to providing the highest quality care and education for our own children as well as yours. The Primrose School of Oviedo will provide a safe and nurturing learning environment, and we invite you to become a part of the Primrose family! We love children and believe that when it comes to their development, compromising is not an option. If you are looking for a safe home-away-from-home that is full of smiling faces and a professionally developed curriculum with proven results, we would love to meet you and tell you more about our Primrose School. Sincerely, Lina and Nate Parrott

Oviedo is a city in northern Spain and the capital of the Autonomous Community of Asturias. Founded in the 8th century, it has a rich history and is full of magnificent old architecture, notable among which are the ancient Romanesque churches, listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the imposing Gothic cathedral. Oviedo is not one of the largest cities in Spain, but it is famous for its unique university city atmosphere and looks very ancient, with a well-preserved medieval historical center. nine0003
The pearl of Oviedo is the old town, walking along the narrow streets and alleys of which you can feel its character and the depth of past centuries. History
The Kingdom of Asturias was founded by the Visigoths in opposition to the Arab state, which occupied most of the Iberian Peninsula in the Middle Ages. The city itself was founded by monks who built the Church of Saint Vincent on an uninhabited hillside. Oviedo soon became the capital of the kingdom and one of the most important cities in medieval Spain. At 79In 4, Oviedo was sacked by Caliph Hisham I, despite the fact that the Moorish rulers most often ignored Asturias, as it occupied the poor part of Iberia.
Oviedo. View of the Cathedral
The kings of Asturias intended to make Oviedo no less brilliant than Toledo. After the royal residence was moved here, many beautiful buildings were erected here, modeled on the capital of the Visigothic kingdom. At the same time, Oviedo retained its “face” and architectural style, which followed the late Romanesque traditions. Given that Asturias was a poor agricultural region at the time, the scale of these structures is truly impressive. nine0003
In the 10th century, the royal court was transferred to León, so later on the city lost some of its importance, while still playing an important role in the history of Spain and remaining the residence of the bishop. In the 12th – 16th centuries, Oviedo was a place of pilgrimage along the way of St. James, which led to Santiago de Compostela. A university was founded here in the early 17th century.
Getting there
Asturias Airport is located 40 km from Oviedo on the outskirts of the city of Aviles. It has regular connections to the following cities: London, Rome, Amsterdam, Basel, Zurich, Milan, Brussels, as well as some major cities in Germany. From the airport to the city center can be reached by bus. Oviedo has regular rail and bus connections to Madrid, Seville, Barcelona and other Spanish cities. International bus routes connect the city with Paris and Brussels. nine0003
Shopping
The historic center of Oviedo is full of traditional shops and there is an open-air market almost every day in the main square. The traditional covered market is located in the vicinity of the Plaza de la Constitucion. Oviedo’s main market is the Mercado El Fontan, housed in an elegant glass and concrete building from the late 19th century.
The largest shopping center in the city – Salesas. Outside of Oviedo, there is a large shopping complex, Parque Principado, with more than 100 stores. You can get there by bus L1, which leaves from Calle Uria. nine0003 Plaza de la Constitucion
Food
The old town of Oviedo abounds with cozy restaurants and cafes. We recommend visiting the small secluded squares of El Fontán and Trascorrales, or go to calle Gascona, which is called cider boulevard and where they serve regional cuisine with a serving of this drink.
Popular dishes and local specialties:
- Fabada – white bean stew with chorizo, black pudding and bacon, seasoned with smoked paprika, garlic and saffron
- cabrales cheese
- Cachopo is a meat delicacy consisting of two veal or beef steaks stuffed with cheese and ham.
- Ternera Asturiana – local beef
- Tortos con picadillo – corn fritters with minced pork and peppers
- Fabes con almejes – clams with beans
- Pote Asturiana – similar to fabada, but with cabbage. This dish is especially popular in winter in the countryside
- Cordero a la estaca – lamb roasted slowly over oak or beech wood
- Pitu caleya – chicken with rice
- Callos a la Asturiana – beef tripe cooked with ham, garlic, onions, white wine, olive oil and chili peppers
Places of interest
The old town of Oviedo is called “Casco Antiguo” ( Casco Antiguo). It has retained its medieval appearance and most of the main attractions are located here. Branching out from the old center are newer districts built between the 17th and 20th centuries, when the city grew and expanded rapidly. nine0003
The historic center of Oviedo is often compared to Santiago de Compostela. It has the same narrow streets, the dominant northern Spanish style and the imposing cathedral as its main architectural feature.
The main sights of Oviedo
The Cathedral of San Salvador
The Cathedral of San Salvador is the main attraction of Oviedo and one of the most impressive churches in Spain. The cathedral, built mainly in the Gothic style, was built between the 14th and 16th centuries on the site of an ancient church of the 8th century, which was founded by King Alfonso II of Asturias. The current building began to be erected in the 14th century. The tall 82-meter tower, which is the cathedral’s most striking feature, was built in the 15th century and topped by a beautiful Gothic spire. nine0003
In fact, despite the predominance of Gothic, Oviedo Cathedral exhibits several architectural styles, from pre-Romanesque to Baroque and Renaissance.
The interior of the cathedral is characterized by exquisite architecture and is rich in masterpieces of art. The main chapel contains the tomb of Archbishop Arias de Villar from the 16th century and a magnificent retablo (Spanish version of the altar) with numerous panels depicting scenes from the life of Christ. The baroque chapel of Santa Eulalia houses a beautiful gilded silver reliquary from the 11th century. nine0003 Camara Santa
The most valuable relic is located in the south transept and is called Camara Santa. This UNESCO World Heritage-listed chapel houses the Arch of Santa, a precious reliquary brought to Asturias after the Visigothic kingdom of Toledo was overrun by the Moors. Covered with silver-plated reliefs, this chest contains valuable relics from the “holy land”.
Medieval pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela stopped in Oviedo to venerate the reliquary. Below is another chapel, which houses the tombs of the 12th century. The cathedral also adjoins a beautiful monastery from the medieval era. Inside the magnificent Gothic cloister is an archive containing historical manuscripts, as well as an ecclesiastical museum displaying a collection of religious art. nine0003 Sculpture of Mafalda
Oviedo is full of statues and sculptures that are organically woven into the urban landscape, making the city an open-air museum. There is a whole route here that includes hundreds of works of art representing a wide variety of styles. Among the hundreds of sculptures worth enjoying, one of the most famous is the Mafalda sculpture by Pablo Irrgang, depicting an Argentine cartoon character. Another famous sculpture is La Regenta (Master) near the cathedral. nine0003 Church of San Isidoro
San Isidoro is an old baroque church from the 16th century, built on the site of an ancient Romanesque church. It is located in the historical center of Oviedo on the Constitución Square (next to the town hall). It is a building in the Jesuit style with a four-section nave with open aisles connected to each other. The church was consecrated in 1681, after almost a century of construction.
Church of San Juan el Real
Church of San Juan el Real is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in Oviedo, despite the fact that it was built between 1912 and 1915. The church has an interesting facade and incredibly beautiful interior decoration.
Town Hall
Town Hall is a historic baroque building built in the first half of the 17th century. Oviedo City Hall is located on Plaza Mayor in the historic center of Oviedo. It has a symmetrical façade that emphasizes the lower access arches and many decorative balconies. The main building of the town hall is crowned with a pediment with a shield and a clock tower.
University of Oviedo
The University is also one of the main attractions of Oviedo. It was founded in 1574 and is one of the oldest universities in Spain. It is the only university in Asturias that attracts many students (about 10% of the city’s population are students). The founding of this educational institution was the main reason for the expansion of Oviedo between 17 and 19over the centuries.
San Francisco Park
Oviedo’s main park is located in the heart of the city and is called the Campo de San Francisco. In the past, it was a garden that belonged to the monastery of the same name. The park has an area of 6 hectares and lush vegetation, including exotic plants and colorful flowers. Here it is a pleasure to explore the shady walking paths and tree-lined alleys, discovering interesting monuments, statues and arches scattered throughout the area.
Palace of the Condes de Toreno
Built in 1675, the Palace of the Count of Toreno is a recognized architectural monument and is considered one of the most beautiful historical buildings in Oviedo. The palace has a beautiful baroque façade with Tuscan columns framing the front doorway. nine0003 Camposagrado Palace
Camposagrado Palace – magnificent 18th century baroque palace. The building has two impressive façades: the Rococo façade overlooks the Plaza de Porlier and the Baroque façade faces the Valdécarzana Palace.
Pre-Romanesque churches
Church of Santa Maria del Naranco
Santa Maria del Naranco is an ancient church at the foot of the hill of the same name, located 2 kilometers from Oviedo with stunning views of the city. This modest little building is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its exceptional historical and architectural value. nine0003
This building was originally a royal palace built for King Ramiro I of Asturias in 848. The building was then converted into a church in the 10th and 11th centuries. This sacral monument is a fine example of pre-Romanesque architecture with an interesting external staircase, vaulted hall and beautiful arched windows.
Another interesting feature of the church are the twisted columns, typical of Asturian architecture. The outer columns have Corinthian capitals, while the inner columns have trapezoidal capitals. The church is unique in that well-preserved architectural details that predate Romanesque architecture can be seen here. nine0003 Church of San Miguel de Lillo
San Miguel de Lillo is a tiny old chapel on top of the hill of Monte Naranco, located 2 km from Oviedo and a little higher from the Church of Santa Maria. It is also included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and has an important historical value.
The church is a fine example of pre-Romanesque architecture, with typical Asturian columns both outside and inside. The building has retained about one third of the original structure, dating back to 9century, including a portico, parts of the nave and four intricate stone lattice windows. The church also has an interesting vaulted interior, decorated with motifs from Visigothic, Byzantine and North African art.
Church of San Julian de los Prados
San Julian de los Prados (Santullano) is an ancient pre-Romanesque church located in the Oviedo suburb of Pumarin. This wonderful sacred monument, also included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, was built in the first half of the 9th century during the reign of King Alfonso II and is the oldest church in Oviedo. nine0003
San Julián de los Prados is the largest pre-Romanesque church in Spain. Until the 11th century, it was generally the largest Christian building in the Pyrenees. In terms of architecture, the church is a basilica, including three doorways, a transept and three naves, separated by columns and arches. An unusual feature is the two-level apse with an altar on the lower level. The colorful frescoes also deserve special attention.
San Tirso el Real
San Tirso el Real – old church 9century, which was part of a religious complex built by Alfonso II. The building has been rebuilt several times over the centuries, so only one window has retained the original pre-Romanesque architecture. The Ajimezado window is easy to recognize. It consists of three semicircular brick arches over marble columns with decorative capitals inside Moorish stucco. The church has an interior typical of Romanesque architecture, consisting of three naves separated by square columns on supporting arches. nine0003 Church of Santa Maria de Bendones
Santa Maria de Bendones is a 9th century pre-Romanesque church restored in 1958. It is a simple and austere stone building, the only decoration on the outside of which are decorative bars on the windows. The interior of the church features wooden beamed ceilings and original pre-Romanesque paintings (although only a small part on the south side has survived).
Museums of Oviedo
Archaeological Museum
The Archaeological Museum of Oviedo is located behind the Cathedral, occupying the building of the old monastery of San Vicente, which was founded in the 8th century and rebuilt in the 15th century. The ground floor is dedicated to pre-Romanesque and Romanesque art. The highlight of this collection is part of the Santa Maria del Naranco altarpiece. Also on the ground floor are ancient Roman coins, sculptures, mosaics and other artifacts from the Roman era. The second floor contains prehistoric finds found in the surrounding area. nine0003 Fine Arts Museum
The Fine Arts Museum is one of the largest museums in Oviedo and is divided into several departments:
- Collection of historical paintings from the 14th to the 19th century, including works by El Greco, Goya and Picasso. There are also sculptures dating from the Baroque period.
- Collection of 19th century romantic paintings and works by local artists.
- Contemporary art collection.
Fernando Alonso Museum
The Fernando Alonso Museum was founded on the outskirts of Oviedo by a famous racing driver and native of the city. Alonso, who won two world championships in Formula 1, has a collection of his own things here. In addition, you can see the championship-winning Renaults, the 2007 McLaren, the early 2010s Ferrari, and the 2018 Le Mans-winning Toyota. nine0003
