Mesquite Tree, How to Propagate Mesquite Tree (Ornamental Gardens)

Mesquite trees are drought tolerant stoic trees that thrive in hot, arid climates. They have become an interesting example of the landscape due to their adaptability and beautiful cut feathery leaves. Decorative pods add even more seasonality.

Growing new mesquite trees can occur naturally if seedlings are found in a mature specimen. However, propagating mesquite this way is rare due to the capriciousness of the seeds, and human intervention may be required if you want more trees.

Propagation of mesquite by cuttings

Cuttings can be used to propagate mesquite, but by all indications they can be difficult to root. For best results, take cuttings from both hardwood and softwood. Use a rooting hormone and a moist, soil-free environment that the cuttings can be inserted into. Cover the container with plastic and keep slightly damp in a warm place. Probability of cuttings is about 50/50..

Growing new mesquite trees from seed

Perhaps a more reliable way to propagate mesquite is through seeds. Pick them up when the pods rattle while shaking. The rattling indicates that the seeds are ripe. At the end of summer, most of the pods are dry and brittle, and the seeds are ready. Break open the pod to reveal numerous dark seeds. Discard the pod and save the seed.

Seeds need several treatments before planting in the soil. Scarification is one of the important processes. It mimics the action in the animal intestine after swallowing the pod. You can use sandpaper, a file, or even a knife. Then soak the seeds in sulfuric acid, vinegar, or plain warm water for up to an hour. This further softens the outer surface of the seeds, increasing germination.

You may also want to refrigerate the seeds for 6 to 8 weeks, a process called stratification. Some growers think this helps germination. This may not be necessary, but exposure to cold breaks dormancy in many temperate regions and the process will not damage the seeds.

Once the seed coat has been damaged and soaked, it is time to plant the seeds. A good growing medium can be sphagnum moss or soil mixed with perlite. Given the hostile environment that mesquite trees grow in, just about anything can work, including sand or thin bark mulch.

Choose large containers with good drainage holes and plant one seed per pot. Bury the seeds 1/4 inch (.64 cm) below the surface of the soil. Keep the soil moderately moist and place the container in an area where the temperature is at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27°C). The exact germination time is variable.

Transplant seedlings when they have two sets of true leaves. This inexpensive method of propagating mesquite may require trial and error, but it is inexpensive and takes very little time. The results will be worth it when you have new nursery mesquite trees to populate your landscape.
