I have been working with children and families in the field of early childhood for more than 21 years. I grew up the oldest of six children in Newton , MA. Coming from such a large family is what gave me my love of working with children. I studied early childhood education at Worcester State University and graduated with my Bachelors of Arts in Early Childhood Education. I am director II certified through the Dept. of Early Education and Care in Massachusetts. In addition to working in the center, I am a mother to boy/girl twins who attend NGCC.

What I love most about working with children is being able to help them explore their world. I love children’s natural curiosity and wonder. I am very fortunate to get to be a part of so many lives while working alongside families. I also love getting to be a part of a larger school community and to watch children grow up while with us.

Snickers

My husband was one of the first to start selling Snickers in our region. I remember coming and asking: “How did the children behave?” And that means that he came with gifts. The question is purely pro forma. The children poured out, their mouths opened, waiting. And then he pulls out a whole Snickers. They tried to open it so as not to tear the film, well, in which it was sealed. For some reason they kept it as a bookmark. And they cut the chocolate bar with a knife so that everyone had enough. I then thought that you can’t get enough of this, you can eat at least a hundred pieces with tea. It was fantastically delicious. Nuts in something sticky-sweet and chocolate on top is wavy, like poured. We haven’t seen this before.

Cooperative store

In the early 1990s, cooperative stores appeared in contrast to the state ones, in which it was a ball to roll then – mustard powder, mayonnaise and bread were sold there. Next to us they sold raw smoked sausage in cooperatives.

Foreign cigarettes

1. Russian or Bulgarian cigarettes were sold before, still Cuban. Then foreigners began to appear. A pack of Marlboros then in 91-92 cost as much as half of my salary, the cheapest – Magna or something like that – seemed like a heavenly delight, they were completely different.

2. Yes, the shelves were full, and it was quite funny, including cigarettes. An incredible number of different ones appeared. We knew little in Soviet times, except for the brands that were in the Union, they brought from Chisinau: sauced, flavored cigarettes, unprecedented in Moscow. Then Marlborough-Chisinau appeared. I really liked Doina short cigarettes, I started smoking Gauloises, they turned out to be very similar. The fact is that in addition to these, we knew some names – Chesterfield, which cost one and a half rubles on the black market, Malboro. For many years, my father rehearsed the kids for admission to MGIMO, so there was always a certain number of imported cigarettes that were given to him, so I more or less knew the names. But suddenly a huge number of brands appeared, which was even impossible to imagine.

Internet

In 1996, I got the Internet at work. The prerequisite for this was e-mail, from the year 93, and then the Internet was installed for everyone. We all started chatting. Mostly English-speaking, because there were no Russian speakers yet, or we simply did not know them. It was very funny, I remember that we laughed a lot, there were five of us in the room, and everyone registered under one nickname and collectively used it – they had fun from the heart. In the Russian-speaking segment, everything was serious – for example, some “controversial” book was published and everyone discussed this book in a chat for months. Later, “ICQ” appeared – for communication between departments at work, we used only it. Not to mention that it was the best way to connect with the foreigners I worked with. MSN – the messenger was for communication, AOL.

Credit cards

I got my first card in 1993, when few people had them and few places accepted them. It was quite funny: there is a card, there is money, but you can’t spend it – no ATMs, no one accepts it anywhere. Moreover, Visa and Master Card immediately appeared, and they could be used abroad, but due to the fact that the system was not well-established, and the information exchange system was also undeveloped, people leaving abroad often found themselves in a situation that they could not pay with it , because the connection failed, and the payment system could not approve the transaction. I worked in a bank and periodically called foreign hotels on behalf of the bank and explained that a person who cannot pay for accommodation now will be able to do it in 5 hours, when the connection is established. On behalf of the bank. Oddly enough, they believed me. Because of this card, I got an A for my diploma at the institute, I wrote on databases – information exchange systems. As a result, instead of telling them what I have written, I taught them how to use cards, gave a lecture on what can be done and what cannot be done. All the mistakes of beginners: for example, that you can’t scratch out a pin code on a card with a nail. I got “excellent”, that’s how lucky I am. No one even read what I wrote there.

E-mail

I don’t know when it appeared in the West, but I got my first address, I remember exactly, in the summer of 1996. It was like this: at the summer school I met a Muscovite, and he told me that we could correspond by some kind of e-mail. He has some address with a dog. I didn’t understand anything, and here the dog, but I was ashamed to ask, they say, a provincial fool. I returned to my institute and began to ventilate this topic. Yes, they say, there is such a thing, you have to go to some office and write a statement. And they gave me some set of letters. It is not clear what to do with them. It’s impossible to imagine now, but I’m telling the truth. The system worked like this. I wrote a letter on a floppy disk – these are such square plastic shnyags – and brought it to a special room. There was an aunt who was responsible for the e-mail of all the employees of the institute. She sent a letter, didn’t let me in, it’s a serious thing. I only asked: “I have nothing?” She said: “You have one letter” and read it aloud. I memorized or copied in a notebook. It was the Institute of the Academy of Sciences!! There was no internet on the computers that were in the rooms. I was a leader, then almost no one used e-mail at our institute.

Floppy disks

This is a type of flash drive in terms of functionality. It looked like a square flat plastic about the size of a Ritter chocolate bar, there are some with nuts. Well, not the point … It was inserted into a special target in the system unit. They were often buggy, but that’s not the point . .. In the 1990s, everyone used them. And then they switched to flash drives. But the funny thing is that the Russian Humanitarian Science Foundation required that the grant application be submitted along with a floppy disk. And the people have no floppy disks for a long time, this is a rarity. And if you find a floppy disk, that there are no such computers to record an application on it. Can you imagine? People do not have this article, but the Science Foundation requires it on diskettes. I then realized that it was time to get out of such science.

Kinder Surprise

1. I remember very well what was in the first egg – a chicken with a false nose. That was exactly what happened in 1993. Someone gave us this. And we open and do not know what to do with it. It looks like chocolate, but somehow fragile. And inside the yellow capsule. Thought it might be edible too, licked it, no. Barely thought to open it. Some plastic and a curl of paper spilled out. 2. My daughter loved Kinder surprises very much, she still keeps a collection of her favorite toys, which she does not even share with her son.

3. Very smart people, I remember here in Teply Stan, they made all sorts of stalls in which they sold figurines from Kinder Surprises. One figurine was missing, or I wanted some, or I came across the same ones, it was possible to change or go to the stall and buy the missing ones.

Lego

I remember very well how in 1995 we had the first Lego, the leader of a wild tribe was sitting on the throne, and if the throne is raised, then there is a chest with money. Somehow everyone quickly understood this. These instant juices came quickly and left quickly. It’s hard to imagine a bigger mess.

Pagers

1. I remember how pagers appeared in the 90s. It’s funny now, but it was cool then. It was such a gadget with a screen on which a message appeared, such as SMS. But you couldn’t just send SMS, but you had to dictate the text to your aunt-operator by a special number. Can you imagine how it worked? There is no husband, it is not clear where he is, he takes evil on him, then you call your aunt and say: “Give the subscriber a number such and such that he is a goat and let him not return home.” The aunt types and checks: “You’re a goat, don’t come back home.” And he asks again: “Is everything right?”. 2. I had a pager, and we had fun sending messages of some kind of question like “do you know how much salt you need for a bucket of barbecue?” o’clock at three o’clock. It was a lot of fun.

Mobile phone

1. In 1997 I bought my first mobile phone – it was Motorola, it was big, black, with an antenna. It had to be worn on the belt, everyone was very forceful – rarely anyone had phones then. It was necessary to plug the clothes into the belt, and there was a cover with a clip on the belt of the trousers for everyone to see. I always wanted someone to call me on the phone so that everyone could see! The daughter was born, she was sent to the dacha with her grandmother, and it was necessary to have some kind of connection in the dacha. TV with VCR

Up to a point, buying any major home appliance was an event. First, a TV appeared, the first color TV with a remote control, Japanese, from the mysterious company Crown – it worked well. After a couple of years, McDonald’s has become such a network feeder. At first it was a big priority for me, then at some point I overate it when I was sitting in the office next to McDonald’s, and for the last 10-12 years I have never been there. Now for me, McDonald’s is a cheap low-quality eatery in which I can get poisoned, but in those years it was for me an outlet to a chic foreign restaurant.

Washing machine

1. Washing machine with dryer was the biggest shock for me. She took care of all the processes. We got it in 1995, and before that, machines were only washed, not wrung out, not dried, most people generally washed by hand. I studied at the gymnasium, we had a lot of wealthy children, in the beginning there was such a fashion for polly pockets – it was very cool, the girls were delighted with them. These are such small boxes, little men. They were brought from different countries and we played, someone stole them, respectively. My own was from Paris, bought at Disneyland. When I see them on the Internet, I have very good memories. They were really well made, hard work. I don’t find this level of toy now, which is a pity.

Tamagotchi

1. Everyone wore them. This thing was popular all over the world, someone even jumped out of the windows because the Tamagotchis were dying. It was so-so for me: I treated them, cleaned them, but calmly treated them. Woke up sometimes such “urgently urgently to play”. Everyone in the class had.

2. The appearance of Tamagotchi turned my whole life upside down. Tamagotchi just killed my life. I was in kindergarten when they appeared. I began to complain that I really need them. The Tamagotchi games ended with the fact that when the Tamagotchi died at night because he was not fed, I grieved so much that in the next week my parents had to get up at night to feed him, clean up after him so that he would not die, and so that I would wake up in the morning and he’s alive. In general, it all ended with the fact that they pulled out the batteries from there, said that there were no more batteries for the Tamagotchi, and then they threw it out altogether.

Alcohol

In the 1980s, the Gorbachevskys all disappeared, then sluggishly reappeared, and in the 90s a huge amount of imports poured in – Polish vodka, German. The most interesting thing was not this, there was plenty of vodka, this winking Rasputin and so on. They brought completely unexpected drinks, despite the fact that, understandably, Soviet people massively poured all sorts of nasty things into themselves, but nasty things appeared that had not been seen or touched before. It was possible to buy from a car, for example, in 91-92. There is a car, you can buy from it, and what could be lucky for you – to buy several dusty bottles of not vodka and not wine, but half a liter, in which soda water was traditionally sold, dusty and closed with metal corks, with Isabella wine. Brought from somewhere. There was a truck, from which they sold these bottles. And it was also possible, we went into some store, what we stumbled upon, we bought it, the Volga Dawns drink. Monstrous. It poured like glycerine, a thick, disgusting liquid. The wine drink was called. Another time we bought vodka from Chegem.
