“Welcome to Night Vale” is a podcast featuring news releases where radio host Cecil talks about life in a lost US desert town with a long and complicated history. But this is an unusual city (although may very well be that it looks like your city even more than you would like ), and something strange is constantly happening in it: there is an old woman who is visited by angels, a cloud that subjugates the inhabitants of the town , there is a tree waitress and many other seemingly absurd things. The podcast was released in 2013 and immediately won a large army of fans and for a long time ranked second in iTunes. Well, now the creators of the podcast, Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, have decided to write a full-fledged novel based on the cast.

One day a stranger in a light-colored jacket and a buckskin suitcase appears in Night Vale, and at first glance it seems that there is nothing strange in him, but no one can remember this person, immediately those around forget his features and name. The only thing the stranger manages to do is to leave a piece of paper with the inscription “King City”, and this piece of paper is not so easy to get rid of. Two residents of Night Vale – Jackie and Diana will have to deal with all this.

Chapters in the novel alternate from the point of view of two heroines, but there are also broadcasts of Cecil himself, where he talks about the events taking place in the city.

I paid attention to this book for three reasons:

Firstly, I confess, I was attracted by the bright cover.
Secondly, I was intrigued by the summary of the book and the podcast itself as a whole.
Thirdly, I bought into the inscription on the cover “the perfect book for fans of Stephen King’s work.” Although the novel turned out to be quite good, there is absolutely nothing to do with the work of King. It is, in my opinion, blasphemy to compare Night Vale with King’s novels, since there is logic in his novels, but there is none in Fink-Cranor’s novel. What publishers will not do just to draw attention to the book.

Before I started reading, I came across such an opinion that the book is to some extent pointless to read if you have never heard the podcasts themselves and are at least a little unfamiliar with this story. Therefore, before reading, I listened to a couple of podcasts in order to be in the subject. The only good thing about this approach to the book is that you already start to have a rough idea of what to expect from the story, and you get used to many of the oddities of Night Vale and this style of telling the story. Well, if you start getting to know this city from a book, and not from podcasts, I think nothing bad will happen, and maybe the book will become some kind of incentive to continue getting to know the city and its inhabitants directly through podcasts.

I would describe the book in just two words: strange but addictive. Honestly, at first it is very difficult to understand what is happening, and the thought that only a madman can come up with such a thing does not leave, but the story itself turned out to be interesting and therefore you are very soon drawn into the plot. The feeling that the book hypnotizes you, it does not let go until the end and you really want to know how this madness will eventually end.

This is not the kind of story when from the very first pages an easy narrative awaits you and the reading itself is given without difficulty. Honestly, if you don’t know that Night Vale is a very original city, you get used to everything for a long time, while reading at some points you stumble and have to re-read them in order to understand what happened now, what the authors had in mind. The writing style is very extraordinary, not like anything else that I have read before. This is not a book that can be safely advised to everyone, since not everyone will understand it, for some it may seem like a mess. The book is very specific. But under all these strange descriptions in the book, you understand that the authors make fun of everyday life, the book certainly has a parallel with our reality.

I liked the main characters of the novel, and you involuntarily feel sympathy for the rest of the characters, and the most interesting thing is that you quickly remember who is who. The story is interesting, but if I am now asked to retell the entire plot in detail, then, alas, I won’t be able to tell anything intelligible, since it’s difficult to put all this confusion on the shelves.

The book and podcasts certainly deserve attention, but I won’t call it a masterpiece, it’s not a “must-read”, but it’s worth reading, just to understand if this is your city of Night Vale. But, and I will continue to listen to these podcasts, as the world created by Fink-Cranor struck me. History attracts like a magnet.

Atmospheric and strange book.

“It’s a pretty desert town, where the hot sun shines, the moon shines wonderfully, and mysterious lights pass overhead when we all pretend to be asleep. Welcome to Night Vale”

“Welcome to Night Vale” is a series of podcasts that was released in 2013 and immediately captured the attention of the public. Well, now the authors of the podcasts Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor decided to put the story into a book and wrote a novel of the same name.

The book tells us about the life of the fictional city of Night Vale, lost somewhere in the desert in the Southwest of the United States. The famous radio host Cecil tells us every day about how the town lives, who inhabits it, and what unusual situations and events have happened this time in a small and strange town.

The protagonists of the novel are forever nineteen-year-old Jackie Fierro – the pawnshop owner and Diana Creighton – the mother of fifteen-year-old Josh – a boy who constantly changes his form, sometimes you can meet him in human form, and sometimes in the form of some inanimate object. So it’s no surprise that Josh is constantly told: “You’ve changed so much since we last met.”

And then one day a very mysterious man in a light jacket with a buckskin suitcase appears in Night Vale, whose name and appearance none of the people around him can remember. The only thing this strange stranger does is give away an equally strange piece of paper with the inscription “King City” which cannot be got rid of by any means. Here are two of our main characters – Jackie and Diana – in such an interesting and difficult situation. Throughout the book, the narrative will alternate, first from the face of Jackie, then from Diana, and somewhere in between they will also flash the voice of the most famous radio host Cecil.

“Angels as such do not exist,” said the council in their vociferous unanimity. But if they existed, what dangerous and disgusting creatures they would be. Just think of that many legs and that creepy voice. Think of an angel as the embodiment of senseless harm and death. You will have to imagine all this, because angels do not exist.
“Stay away from them,” the council concluded.
And now we bring you back to the sound of something around you, which is perhaps much louder than you think, but only partially indicates the troubles awaiting you.

To be honest, at first it is hard to read the book, it is very difficult to understand what is happening, what kind of nonsense it is and how to read it, but then you gradually get used to it, ponder the thoughts of the authors and the city, and the book no longer seems so complicated and absurd.

I liked the book, it is interesting, it has good main characters who do not irritate during reading and there is an unusual city with its own cockroaches. Anyone who loves slurred, chaotic stories then welcome to Knight – Vale.

Rated the book

“Welcome to Night Vale” is based on a podcast about a fictional town in the out-of-the-South West, USA The novel is a finished work with a completely new story and reveals to the reader those parts and secrets of the city that were not included in the podcasts. There is an opinion that people who are not familiar with this series of podcasts, after reading the book, will remain at a loss, and fans of podcasts will be disappointed, because the book did not reach podcasts. I am new in this sense, I know about podcasts, but I did not listen to them, nevertheless, the mention of Stephen King on the cover piqued my curiosity.

I must say right away that Stephen King and the Twilight Zone series, which was also kindly pointed out on the cover, have nothing to do with the book. And no resemblance. In my humble opinion, the book is like a mixture of Boris Vian (but much simpler and less poetic) and Jonathan Carroll (but even more absurd).

In “Welcome to Night Vale” we meet Jackie Fierro, a nineteen-year-old pawnshop owner who no longer remembers how long ago she was nineteen – a few years or several centuries, and Diana Creighton – the mother of fifteen-year-old Josh, who can not decide which he is in the form of a human or some winged creature with eyelashes around his mouth, or in general a vase. In the lives of our two protagonists, in different but very mysterious ways, a mysterious gentleman in a light brown jacket appears with a buckskin suitcase in his hand and hands them a note with one word: “King City”.

I don’t know anything about these podcasts, but for fans of surrealism and absurdity, the book is very good. Stacy’s sentient smoky spot works at the box office in Night Vale’s cinema, and monstrous bloodthirsty librarians lurk in the libraries… At first, you don’t move in at all, but when you drive in, you realize that it will be oh so difficult to leave Night Val now – all these freak residents cities have become something like closest friends, closing the last page I already want to open the book again, and I started listening to these sinful podcasts, especially for the same ignoramuses in English – there is a channel on YouTube with Russian subtitles – https://www. youtube.com/channel/UCDSQsALiae3vqw4Ks9e3Kkg

If you haven’t bought the book yet, or are afraid to read it and still don’t know anything about Night Vale, try listening to podcasts first, the style of the book is very, very close, and the host’s voice is insanely magnetic. If you think that a person must have two arms, two legs and a head, and at home they don’t know how to think, maybe you should skip this story, while the rest – “Welcome to Night Vale!”

Random Quote: There was always something about Night Vale that she had never seen before. There was a man she once passed by in the desert – he cut a cactus with scissors, as if shearing it. There was a cactus with thick hair on top. There was a day when a small fissure, always visible in the sky, suddenly opened up, and several pterodactyls flew out from there. A little later it turned out that they were pteranodons, so the panic rose in vain.

There was a girl that Josh liked, but she only liked Josh as a two-legged creature. Josh doesn’t always like being bipedal, so this news upset him. There was a boy that Josh liked, and he liked Josh when he turned into a cool little animal. Josh always likes to be a cool animal, but he had a slightly different perception of the word “cool” than that boy. This was another disappointment for both Josh and the boy, who didn’t find giant centipedes cool at all.

The city of Night Vale has a long and complicated history dating back many thousands of years to the first inhabitants of the desert. We will not touch on them here. Suffice it to say, this city is like so many others – with City Hall, Desert Flower Bowling Club, Arcade Complex, Moonlight All Night Diner, Ralphs Supermarket, and of course, its radio station broadcasting all the news, which we are allowed to hear. On all sides it is surrounded by endless desert. Perhaps it is very similar to your city. It may very well be that it resembles your city even more than you would like.

It’s a pretty desert town where the hot sun shines, the moon shines marvelously and mysterious lights pass overhead when we all pretend to be asleep.

Welcome to Night Vale.

Chapter 1

Pawnshops in Night Vale work as follows.

First, you need a thing to pawn.

To get it, it will take a lot of time lived, years spent in life and existence, until you reach the point where you believe that you exist, that there is a material thing and the very concept of property, and that (unbelievable, like all of the above) ) these absurd beliefs are built in such a way that the end result is your possession of the thing.

Great. Excellent result.

Second, once you believe you own the thing, you must reach the point where you need the money more than the thing. This is the easiest step. You simply own the thing and the body with the needs – and wait.

The only pawnshop in Night Vale is run by a very young lady, Jackie Fierro. The pawnshop doesn’t have a name, but if you need one, you’ll find out for yourself where it is. This knowledge will come to you suddenly, most likely when you are in the soul. You’ll pass out, surrounded by bright glowing blackness, and then find yourself on all fours under the warm water washing over you and find out where the pawnshop is. You will smell musty and soapy, and you will suddenly panic from loneliness. This will resemble most trips to the shower.

Before you can offer your thing to Jackie, you will need to wash your hands, which is why there are bowls of purified water in the establishment. While you are washing your hands, you should hum something. Of course, you always need to hum when you wash your hands. This is just part of the hygiene procedure.

When you have cleaned yourself properly, you will put the item on the counter and Jackie will look at it.

Jackie will put her feet up on the counter. And lean back in his chair.

“Eleven dollars,” she says. She always says “eleven dollars”.

You will not answer. Ultimately, you don’t have to participate in this process. Basically, you don’t need to.

“No, no,” she says, waving her hand. Then he will name the real price.

Usually it is money. Sometimes – something else: dreams, sensations, visions. Then you die, but not for long. A price tag will be put on the thing: eleven dollars. In a pawnshop, everything goes at this price, regardless of how much you got.

When you revive again, she will give you a receipt, which you can then exchange for the returned item, or look at it at any time to remember that item. Memories are free.

You are now leaving this story. You have become just an example, and it might be better for you not to get into stories at all.

Jackie Fierro squinted out the window at the parking lot. Nobody. She will close soon. Relatively speaking, it always either closed soon or just opened.

Outside the window was a parking lot, and beyond that was the desert, and beyond the desert, the sky, mostly empty, with a few stars. From her point of view, it all seemed like an infinity, unattainable from her place behind the counter.

She recently turned nineteen. She had always just turned nineteen for as long as she could remember. She was a pawnshop owner for a very long time, perhaps several centuries. In Night Vale, clocks and calendars work just fine. Time itself flows there. Each time, as a “newborn” nineteen-year-old pawnshop owner, she only left the establishment when it closed, and only to go to her apartment, where she sat with her legs on the coffee table and listened to city radio and local news on the cable network. . According to the news, the outside world was a very dangerous place. There was always some kind of global cataclysm that threatened Night Vale. Wild dogs. A sentient glowing cloud with the ability to control thoughts (although the Glowing Cloud has become less threatening since being elected to the local student council). Ancient oak doors leading to the unexplored world of the desert, where the current mayor of the city was held for many months. It seemed better to have no friends or hobbies, sit at work with your head bowed and mind your own business, and then sit at home, drinking glass of orange juice and listening to the radio, isolating yourself from everything that could disturb it. measured life.

Her days passed in silence, mostly in emptiness, partly in thought. Sometimes she corrected the inventory. Sometimes she cleared the shelves. Every day she sat down and meditated. I tried to remember the day I took over running the establishment. There must have been such a day, but she did not remember anything special. She has been doing this for decades. She was very young. Both the first and the second were true.

She knew college was something for nineteen year olds. She knew that unemployment in a volatile job market and living with parents were the problems of nineteen-year-olds. She was content that it did not concern her, and continued to work in a pawnshop.

She understood the world and her place in it. She didn’t understand anything. The world and her place in it were nothing, and she understood that.

Due to the lack of working hours in Night Vale, she relied on her own instincts to decide when to close the establishment. When this feeling came, it just came, and it was necessary to lock the doors, take them out of the frames and hide them securely.

The feeling has come. She took her feet off the counter. It’s been a good day. Old Josie, who lived near the parking lot, would come by and bring in a huge amount of cheap plastic flamingos. She dragged them in a large canvas bag and dumped the figurines on the counter like a pile of change.
