  The city provides many nightlife entertainment – clubs and pubs, as well as a great weekend getaway for residents of neighboring cities: Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto. You can visit many museums and historical sites, as well as summer festivals.

  Modern military facility. It is home to part of the active Canadian armed forces, including the Joint Signal Regiment (JSR) and the 21 Electronic Warfare Regiment. It also houses the Museum of Communications.

  Royal Military College

  Bellevue House

  A beautifully maintained Italian villa with lush gardens that was for a time the home of Canada’s first prime minister, John Alexander MacDonald. The house itself and the land around it have been restored in the style of the 1840s, museum workers are dressed in costumes of that era. Bellevue House is a National Historic Building owned by the Parks Canada government agency. This house (35 Center St.) is located 1-2 km west of the city center and the university. Excursions.   Rideau Canal

  Built in 1851 as a protective bypass for the St. Lawrence River. The original stone castles and wooden gates are still in operation – they are used to let pleasure boats through. The Kingston Mills Lock, the first of a series of ever-widening expansions to Parliament Hill in Ottawa, can be found by passing in a small boat or by car on Kingston Mills Road, which runs between Battersea Rd (401 exit 619/Montreal St) and Hwy 15 (401 exit 623).   Saint Mary Cathedral Roman Catholic

  Kingston Penitentiary

  One of the most famous institutions in Kingston. Clifford Olson and Paul Bernando were once kept here; people would kill (and kill) to get into this prison for a whole century. The Prison Museum (located north of the prison, on King St and Sir John A MacDonald Blvd) is open to the public, as is Olympic Harbor (adjacent to the prison), where the Olympic 19 sailing events were held76.   Museums. What to visit

  Art Galleries. The university has two galleries: students run the Union Gallery in the Stauffer Library and the Agnes Etherington Art Center.

  Miller Museum of Geology. Relatively small museum, but very interesting. The tour must be booked in advance. nine0003

  Kingston Health Museum. A small museum with exhibitions (and many exhibits) dedicated to the history of medicine. The museum also provides tours of the history of Kingston Hospital (KGH) for $5, but tours of the museum itself are free. There are usually few people here because the museum is small and hard to find. Time of visit: depends on your interest. Overall, it can take 2 hours if you take the tour and get really interested in it.

  Tourist streets

  Princess St and city centre. Shops, cafes and more. Visiting time: 5 hours maximum.

  What to see around

  Little Cataraqui Creek Conservation Area. This reservation is just north of Highway 401, so you’ll need a car or motorbike to get here from downtown. There is a small fee to enter the park. In summer, you can go on a hiking tour or sail along the river in a canoe or kayak. In winter, you can go snowshoeing, skiing or even ice skating on the frozen lake. For most activities, you can rent equipment and order a trainer. nine0003

  Wolfe Island. Barges from Kingston go to the island every hour for free. Getting there by bike is much harder. George Pyke’s Strawberry farm (about 25 km from the barge pier) is a great place to visit, especially at the end of June. In the island’s town hall or in Kingston, country dance festivals are held throughout the year.

  Fruition Berry Farm – Kingston’s finest strawberry farm, located off Hwy 15 (on Hughes Road), 5 miles north of Highway 401. Due to weather and yield, open from June to October. You can pick strawberries, raspberries, peas, beans, and in the fall also corn and pumpkin! Go on a picnic, take a walk in the beautiful countryside, or leave the kids on the playground. nine0003

  Frontenac Provincial Park is a 30-minute drive from downtown Kingston. Here you can walk and go for a picnic.

  Food. What to try

  Kingston has the highest number of restaurants per capita, you can always find cafes within your means.

  Budget

  Peter’s Place on Princess St, opposite Smith-Robinson. It serves Greek and Canadian cuisine and is known for its very cheap breakfasts.

  Famous King Restaurant at the intersection of Princess and Chatham streets (address: 505 Princess St.). Middle Eastern cuisine that is tasty and nutritious and also inexpensive.

  Golden Viet Thai is located on Wellington Street, between Princess and Queen Streets and offers great and cheap Thai food. You can order a full meal for less than $8, with each main course accompanied by a dessert – tapioca pudding. They do serve the Asian version though, so be on the lookout. Dishes are prepared with a Chinese flavor, especially in terms of presentation. nine0003

  Golden Rooster Delicatessen on Princess St near Wellington St is a very popular establishment. There are a lot of people here at lunchtime on weekdays, but it’s better to join them – it’s worth it! It serves Danish and Dutch dishes, as well as a wide range of cheeses and meats.

  Mekong is located on Princess St next to Division St and serves wonderful Vietnamese food. Known for his avocado smoothies. Inexpensive and very fast service!

  Wok In is located in a tiny shop on Montreal St., east of Princess St. Thai and Cambodian cuisine of excellent quality. The restaurant is usually full of people. Be sure to try lunch number 1 – it is especially loved by visitors. The owners of the restaurant are a lovely married couple. nine0003

  Saigon Delights is a Vietnamese restaurant with two locations, one on Division Street north of Queen Street and one on Wellingston Street just off Princess Street. Most meals cost less than $7. Famous for its pho soup and bun noodles.

  The Toucan/Kirkpatricks is an excellent Irish pub located in the city center on Princess St, between Wellington and King streets. Upstairs is Kirkpatricks, downstairs is Toucan. In general, this place is commonly referred to as “The Toucan”. Every night they serve new specialty drinks, cold draft beers and live music on Mondays after 10pm. Be sure to try layered cheese nachos (half price on Wednesdays), chicken wings and fried sweet potatoes. You can pay by cash or credit card, they have an ATM. nine0003

  Royal Angkor is a Cambodian restaurant located at 523 Princess Street (between Chatham and Alfred streets). Great food, wide selection of vegetarian options. If you’ve never tried Cambodian cuisine, start with Red Curry Chicken.

  Mid-Range

  Cambodiana is located on Brock St opposite the Hotel Dieu Hospital. It used to be the best Thai/Cambodian restaurant in all of southern Ontario, but then the owners sold it. For past owners, head to Pat’s Restaurant. nine0003

  Lone Star Cafe is located on the waterfront in the city center. Everything here is done in a rough Texan style, from fajitas and steaks to Tex-Mex specialties.

  White Mountain Homemade Ice Cream sells excellent ice cream, although a little pricey. Large selection of ice cream flavors served on homemade waffle cones. Do not buy “big” horns, because it is impossible to finish them even by half. Doesn’t work in winter.

  Ta-Ke Sushi is located at the intersection of Bagot and Princess streets, famous for its Korean/Japanese cuisine, maintains a wonderful atmosphere. They serve some of the best sushi in Kingston, bento box lunches and excellent maquis. nine0003

  Copper Penny is a great place to have breakfast (wraps, sandwiches, gourmet burgers) or lunch (pasta and pizza) in a cozy atmosphere. Lunches usually cost up to $10, pasta will cost you about $13 per serving. The restaurant is famous for its French onion soup, giant wraps and homemade pesto. The waiters are always friendly. Come early because you can’t book a table here.

  Tango is a place known for its food and martini range. The signature dishes of this restaurant are salads, sandwiches and fried sweet potatoes. Huge selection of tapas that are 40% off on Sunday and Monday evenings if you order a drink (not necessarily alcoholic). On such evenings, a group of 4-6 people can eat and drink for $6-7 per person. DJs play on Fridays after 11pm. nine0003

  Windmills is a more expensive restaurant where you can find all kinds of food, not just one! The cost of dishes is justified, because the dishes of the day are distinguished by creativity. The restaurant also offers catering services. Located in the city center, on Princess St, between Montreal St and Bagot St.

  Harper’s Burger Bar is a high-end burger chain located on Princess Street, next to Wellington Street. In addition to fried meat, vegetarian dishes are also sold here. Here you can also find local beer and unusual wines, as well as cocktails. Burgers cost about $7-12. nine0003

  Casa Domenico is located on Brock St., next to Ontario St. Excellent Italian cuisine is served here, and the service is beyond praise. The wine list is pretty good too.

  The River Mill offers excellent modern cuisine and a good wine list.

  Where can I get a drink?

  Coffee

  The Sleepless Goat (“The Goat”) is a workers’ cooperative. It serves coffee and tea, desserts, and vegetarian options. Located on Princess St, at the intersection with Wellington St. Service is good, although sometimes slow. The music and the freshly brewed coffee “Dr. Joe” right in the cafe is just wonderful. Free Wi-Fi, but electrical sockets are located only in one part of the cafe. nine0003

  Coffee and Company serves espresso, a variety of coffees and loose leaf tea. Students often hang out in this coffee shop in the city center.

  Starbucks at Wellington and Princess. Students often spend time here too. This coffee shop was vandalized three times (the canopy above the door still shows traces of paint), but then the police installed surveillance cameras around the building and now everything is calm here. It is in direct competition with the coffee house “The Goat”. nine0003

  Several Tim Hortons can be found throughout the city.

  Country Style has two cafes, one on the west side of Bath Road (Hwy. 33) and the other on the corner of John Counter Blvd. (formerly Elliot Avenue) and Montreal St, adjacent to the Community Spirit Bingo Hall.

  Alcohol

  There are not many pubs in Kingston, but they are all of excellent quality. Please note that all establishments are non-smoking.

  Kingston Brewing Company (KBC) is located on Clarence St. near the intersection with Ontario St. As the name suggests, this pub brews its own beer and offers a wide selection of seasonal beers. Drinks of particular note include White Tail, Dragon’s Breath and locally brewed apple cider. KBC also sells beer from other companies, such as Guinness and other well-known brands. Every month they run a “Brewer’s Whim” promotion when they add new beers to the range, usually from Canadian breweries. nine0003

  Tir Nan’Og and Old Speckled Hen are two adjacent pubs located in the Prince George Hotel. The pubs differ in interior design and offer beer and whiskey from Ireland and Britain respectively. The hotel is currently closed for renovation.

  The Toucan is another Irish pub. It offers a wide selection of local and imported beers in kegs. This building houses two different bars and a small area even above the second pub. In the warm seasons, a covered patio is opened in an unusual courtyard paved with limestone. The food served here is typical for pubs. Price for breakfast ($2.99) is the best in Kingston.

  Things to do

  Thousand Island Cruise. Boats that depart from Kingston travel down the St. Lawrence River and around the Thousand Islands. The cruise lasts approximately 3 hours. If you have a car, it’s best to drive to the nearest town of Gananoka, 20 minutes northwest of Kingston, and take a cruise from there, as you’ll be able to see more.

  Local heritage cruises. A small cruise ship “MV Georgian Clipper” from June to October offers a trip for 5 days and 4 nights on Lake Ontario, the Thousand Islands and the fairway of the St. Lawrence River. During the cruise, you will get to know the islands better, walk along their coasts. Cruise organizers provide luxurious accommodation and meals. nine0003

  Skating

  Market Square: In 2005, an outdoor skating rink was built in the city. It is cooled down and even resurfaced every couple of hours, so the ice here is much better than on other rinks. Hockey sticks are not allowed here.

  City Park (west of the city centre). Although the ice does not regenerate as often as in the market square, it is possible to play hockey here.

  Water sports

  Kingston is considered to be the best place in the world for sailing. It hosted the sailing competitions of the Montreal Olympics on 1976 years old.

  Windsurfing and kiteboarding are also very popular.

  Diving. It is believed that in Kingston there are the best reservoirs, where there are many shipwrecks.
