The world’s northernmost island” is actually an iceberg

In the summer of 2021, a Swiss-Danish research team embarked on the Leister Around North Greenland expedition, initiated and funded by the Leister Foundation, to carry out scientific projects and visit the island of Oodaak, discovered in 1978, and has not been observed since 2008.

While exploring, the scientists from Christiane Leister’s team were unable to locate Oodaak, but accidentally stumbled upon an island measuring about 30 meters by 60 meters, which had not previously been mapped. They named the new island in Greenlandic “Kekertak-Avannarlek”, which means “Northernmost Island”. The news of the discovery of the northernmost island on our planet quickly spread around the world.

New Island was located about 800 meters north of the islet of Oodaak, which until then had been considered the closest landmass to the North Pole, thus becoming the northernmost tip of Greenland.

In fact, the “world’s northernmost island” is a stranded iceberg

However, new results obtained by an interdisciplinary Swiss-Danish research team on the next expedition the northernmost island “Kekertak-Avannarlek” is a stranded iceberg containing moraine material. In addition, Oodaak and other small islands that were discovered after 1978 years old and were not discovered after a few years, the so-called “ghost islands” were actually icebergs. These icebergs broke away from the glaciers of the Greenland mainland, became covered in gravel and rocks, and temporarily settled on the floor of the Arctic Ocean north of Greenland. According to Danish professor René Forsberg (DTU Space, Technical University of Denmark), who was part of the expedition, it is very likely that such icebergs will disappear in the future. However, it remains unclear exactly when these icebergs will melt enough to move on, he said. Scientists believe that the origin of these icebergs is related to the glaciers west of Cape Morris Jesup and that other stranded “iceberg islands” may be found north of the coast of Greenland in the future.

Mystery « ghost islands » solved

Thus, the long-term mystery of the so-called “ghost islands” reported in the past has been solved thanks to new scientific data. During Leister Expedition Go North 2022 explorers drilled about 30 holes in the ice of the Arctic Ocean north of Cape Morris Jesup to determine the depth of the sea using an echo sounder. In addition, they measured the thickness of the ice, which ranged from two to three meters. In addition, detailed GPS and lidar measurements were taken to map the seafloor. As René Forsberg stated, all studies confirmed that the islands discovered by the Leister expeditions in 2021 and 2022 are at a depth of 25-45 meters. They are not connected to the sea floor and are therefore stranded icebergs – the so-called “iceberg islands”.

New island discovered

While working in coastal ice east of Kaffeklubben Leister Expedition Go North 2022 discovered another small iceberg island. Its dimensions are approximately 50 by 40 meters and it is completely covered with rocks. Like all other “ghost islands”, this “iceberg island” will also one day disappear. Currently, the two “Leister Islands 2021 and 2022” are the only ones that have been discovered by the expedition members in the Arctic Ocean north of Cape Morris Jesup. It is impossible to predict whether and when they will disappear, or whether other “iceberg islands” will accompany them.

Scientists for LEISTER Islands

To get a further scientific idea of the origin of -icebergs”, scientists visited the “Leister Islands”, discovered in 2021 and 2022. They took various soil samples for bacterial analysis, rock material for geological inferences, and water samples for isotope analysis.

Kaffeklubben on new maps of Greenland as the northernmost island in the world

After Oodaak was found to be stranded by an iceberg, according to new data, Inuit Qeqertaat (Grenl.), also known as Kaffeklubben Island, is again considered the northernmost island in the world, as well as the new border of Greenland.

The stranded icebergs, which include the “Leister Islands” discovered in 2021 and 2022, will no longer appear on Greenland maps in the future. The researchers describe the mysterious “iceberg islands” as a new category that will not be officially mapped. However, for future scientific work, the “islands-icebergs” will be named after their discoverers and documented with data on their location, date of discovery and last visual observation.

Expedition route

Leister Expedition Go North 2022 started with some delay on August 3, 2022. The expeditionary group flew from Longyearbyen, a small mining town on the island of Svalbard, to Nord Station. This is a military and scientific station located in the Northeast Greenland National Park. After a brief stop, the expedition continued on its way to Cape Morris Jesup, where two and a half tons of cargo with camping equipment, food supplies, equipment and instruments for scientists, as well as fuel for the helicopter were waiting for the arrival of the expedition members. It was necessary to set up all the tents, equip the kitchen, collect water from the nearest river and prepare scientific equipment for the first studies. Then, finally, under the cover of the white night, the first supper prepared in the field kitchen was served.

Upon arrival at Cape Morris Jesup, the members of the expedition had to do a large-scale work to equip the base camp.

The scientists traveled to their destinations on day trips or, for longer stays, to makeshift camps from the base camp. The base camp was dismantled again on August 13, 2022. The expedition members, divided into two groups, flew with stops along the coast of North and Northwest Greenland to Qaanaaq, the final destination of expedition Leister Expedition Go North 2022 .

Expedition with difficulties

The organization of such an expedition requires great effort and long preparation. And rarely does everything go according to plan: According to Christiane Leister, the start of the Leister Expedition Go North 2022 was delayed due to formal requirements and the late arrival of the helicopter due to bad weather conditions. In addition, shortly before the start of the expedition, its scientific director dropped out due to the need to undergo a medical examination, so Christiane Leister replaced him and took over the coordination of scientific projects in Greenland. “Based on my own experience of previous expeditions to Greenland and scientific knowledge, as a board member of ETH, I was able to coordinate projects and priorities in such a way that all scientists were able to take samples and measurements in accordance with their plans.”

Communication between expedition members, base and temporary camps and scientists during their flights to research sites was carried out using Garmin inReach satellite communicators. These devices were also used to plan and document routes and waypoints.

Glacier named after the Swiss glaciologist prof. Dr. Konrad Steffen

The glaciers in Greenland were named after three deceased glaciologists: Niels Ree, Anker Waidik and Swiss professor Dr. Konrad Steffen, former director of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL). For a long time, this was the first time that geographical names that were not of Greenlandic origin appeared on Greenlandic maps. Christiane Leister wanted to visit the Sermek Konrad Steffen glacier during an expedition in August 2022 with René Forsberg and erect a stone pyramid (cairn) at the edge of the glacier in memory of Konrad Steffen. But, unfortunately, it was not possible to land there because of the strong wind.

Flowers, plants and fungi in Northern Greenland

Most of us think about Greenland mostly with snow and ice. However, Greenland is home to mosses and lichens, colorful flowers, hardy plants and various fungi. During the Leister Expedition Go North 2022 , Christiane Leister took photographs of various flowers, plants and mushrooms, which can be seen in the next series of photographs.

North Greenland Wildlife

Greenland’s fauna is diverse: polar bear, musk ox, caribou, reindeer, arctic fox, hare, ptarmigan, snowy owl, lemming, eider, various bird species and the rare polar wolf. In addition, insects and butterflies live in Greenland.

During the Leister Expedition Go North 2022 , musk oxen, polar foxes, polar bears, a hunting snowy owl, lemmings and several species of birds were observed. The expedition members were also able to make out several traces of these animals in the wet area.

The mountain hare still wears a white winter coat and moves on dark scree without camouflage. For better camouflage in summer, its white fur turns grey-brown.

The photo shows the arctic mother-of-pearl butterfly. This is the most common butterfly species in Greenland, along with four other species. It is very similar to the polar maroon butterfly, which lives only in the north of the Extreme Arctic and in Northeast Greenland.

Next expedition and another book is planned

Greenland still has a lot to explore. Therefore, the Leister Foundation has already started organizing the next expedition – Leister Go East 2023 , which will take place in the summer of 2023. This time, scientists from Greenland, Denmark and Switzerland will travel to remote areas of East Greenland on an icebreaker.

In addition, as a continuation of the book Expedition to Greenland 2018, another book is planned with reports of the Leister expeditions in 2022 and 2023. Because we, together with scientists, strive to share new discoveries and popularize them. We will republish this book through the Leister Foundation and distribute it free of charge.
