One of Portland’s Finest

Grant Park is such a marvelous multi use park located in the heart of Northeast Portland. Surrounded by beautiful homes and large trees it shares the location with US Grant high school. There is a track, football/soccer field, a nice playground, and plenty of grassy areas on which to roam and run. Life-size statues of Henry, Ribsy, and Ramona from the famous Beverly Cleary books add a very sweet touch to the authentic experience of a great inner city park. In fact the neighborhood and schools bordering the park are those which Beverly Cleary made famous in her children’s books.

Lovely park and neighbors!

I loved going to this park with my pup, we used to go to the dog park area everyday and enjoyed being with our furry and human neighbors a lot! We miss going there, but we moved to the other side of the country and can’t go anymore :/ When we go visit, we are definitely stopping to say hi to everybody!

It’s A Must Short Visit

If you have children or the child in you remembers the Beezus and Ramona books, then you must make a short stop at Grant Park. Besides the usual playground with swings, huge trees and bucolic setting, it has statues (a bit larger than life-size) of Ramona, Henry and Ribsy! Author Beverly Cleary grew up in the neighborhood which she so wonderful depicted in her children’s stores.
There is also plenty of grass to run or roam around and you can also take a short walk over to view U.S. Grant High School which is where they filmed Holland’s Opus with Richard Dreyfus.

Pleasant Park to walk around

Two of us visited the park on the afternoon of Monday, October 2, 2017. We came to see the statues honoring the characters of Beverley Cleary’s books. The area is spacious for a neighborhood park and appears to be well maintained. There is a splash fountain dedicated to Beverley Cleary which operates during the summer months. There are benches and a few picnic tables as well as a few more amenities. The park is a good way to spend an afternoon outdoors.

Grant Park Has A Lot To Offer And Has Beverly Cleary Scultures As Well.

Grant Park is named after Ulysses S. Grant who was a former resident of Fort Vancouver in Vancouver,Washington as well as a historic figure of The Civil War and President of the United States. The park is located at NE Grant and NE 33rd. With Grant High School right next to it at the Northeast section.
The Park is about 20-acres in size and has a lot to offer. It has a soccer field with a track running around it making the soccer filed a centerpiece of sport activity. There is a tennis court, bassketball court, picnic tables, a walking path, a dog park, and a children’s playground. But the most iconic item that the park has are the life sized Beverly Cleary sculptures from her children’s books– Henry Higgins, Ribsy his dog, and Ramona Quimby. Granite tiles near the sculptures are enscribed with quotes from her books.
Beverly Clearly lived in a bungalow nearby this park. It is located only 3 blocks away at 3340 NE Hancock. And happens to be on the market for sale. Her stories are focused around nearby Klickitat Street. It is interesting how a writer can be inspired by their surroundings. It is like they always tell new writers– Write What You Know!

Come for the Beverly Cleary characters

The statues of the Beverly Cleary characters Ramona the P est, Henry Huggins and Ribsy the dog are worth seeing by themselves.
Beverly Cleary’s childhood books were set in Northeast Portland and a stroll around the neighborhood will lead you to Klickitat Street, where the characters resided.
Cleary, who was originally from Yamhill, grew up in Portland and was the reason the stories were based there. Fans donated money for the bronze statues that were place in the park in 1995.

Nice neighborhood park

Though this would be better in summer when the pool and splash pad are open, we still enjoyed petting dogs and playing at the playground. The tribute to Beverly Cleary’s books includes three statues, a list of Henry Huggins books, and a splash pad.

Nice little playground

I had only heard of this park because of the Beverly Cleary statues (there are 3: Ramona, Henry, and Ribsy ) in the middle of the splash pad, and seeing them was why *I* wanted to go there. This park is definitely out of the way on the east side of the city, and we were really only able to stop here on the way back from driving along the Columbia river gorge. There didn’t seem to be an official parking lot; we just parked on the road. Having said that, it was a nice little playground: lots of shade, and some nostalgic equipment (see-saws and a tall metal slide) along with more modern playground stuff.

Portland is the largest city in Oregon and a major tourist attraction in the Pacific Northwest. As of 2015, the population of Portland was 632,309Human. With impeccable urban planning and a network of over 10,000 acres of green space, Portlanders are known to enjoy a high quality of life. This is an experience that goes well with the tourist experience.
Columbia River Gorge
The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area is located along the Oregon-Washington border and contains 292,500 acres. The impressive gorge is located along the Columbia River, the second largest river in the United States.
The gorge contains several lookouts, hiking trails, waterfalls and castles. Notable attractions include Multnomah Falls, Laturell Falls, Oneonta Creek, Crown Point in the Columbia River Gorge, and Horse Wor Bay. The Columbia River Gorge is managed by both the US Forest Service and the Columbia Gorge Commission.
Japanese gardens
The Japanese garden is a traditional garden with Japanese trees and flowers. Portland’s own Japanese Garden is located in Washington Park and covers an area of 5.5 acres. The garden is operated by a non-profit organization, the Japanese Garden Society of Oregon, which has leased the land from the Oregon government since 1960. The Japanese Garden consists of five household plots, the largest of which is the Garden with Pleasure Ponds. The natural garden consists of several streams, waterfalls and unique vegetation. The sand and stone garden, on the other hand, has a calm rake of weathered stones. The flat garden is raked with white sand, which is water and contrasts sharply with the green lawn, moss, evergreens and azaleas.
Finally, the tea garden contains a tea house surrounded by an indoor garden and an outdoor waiting area.
International Rose Test Garden
International Rose Test Garden is a garden of over 7,000 roses located in Washington Park, Portland. This historic 4.5-acre garden contains approximately 550 types of roses. It is also a major rose testing center where new varieties of roses from many parts of the world are tested for aroma, disease resistance, color and other properties. The International Garden of Rose Trials has several home gardens, including the Royal Medal Garden, the Royal Rose Garden, the Miniature Rose Garden, and the Shakespeare Garden. The Gold Medal Garden is unique in that it contains only award-winning roses.
Powell Books
Powell Books was founded in 1971 by Walter Powell and has a chain of stores in and around the Portland area. It contains new, used and rare books with a total of about 4 million books. The headquarters of Powell’s Books is called Powell’s City of Books and is considered the largest independent bookstore in the world.
The store buys up to 3,000 used books a day.
Pearl County
Pearl County is an area of Portland located northwest of downtown. A former industrial area, it has been converted into a residential area dotted with art galleries, boutiques and restaurants. The recent opening of the Cosmopolitan on the Park building in 2016 contributed to the beautiful skyline of Portland.
