What Questions Should I Ask a Daycare Provider?

What ages does Bright Horizons in Philadelphia serve in its daycare program?

Most of our Philadelphia child care centers serve children ages six weeks to six years. Bright Horizons is more than daycare. We have programs with developmentally appropriate curriculum for infants, toddler, preschool and pre-K.

I’ve looked at other daycares in Philadelphia with long waitlists. What if I want to enroll at a Philadelphia Bright Horizons center but space is not available?

You can select and register with up to three Bright Horizons child care locations, including the center in which you are most interested. By registering, you are confirming interest in all three centers. Once registered, we will add you to our waitlist and offer you a space as soon as one becomes available. Our goal is to accommodate families as soon as space allows, and so during the entire process, we will keep in touch with you regarding your status. While waiting for a space to become available at the first-choice location, many families enroll at their second or third choices temporarily until space becomes available at their first-choice centers. Enrolling at another location will not only solve your immediate child care needs, but will provide you priority access to your first preference.

What is the background check process for daycare staff at Bright Horizons Philadelphia child care centers?

Bright Horizons conducts comprehensive background checks on all prospective employees and frequent visitors. In Philadelphia, the state of PA Department of Youth and Families requires background checks for employees of a daycare or licensed child care facility.

Our Philadelphia centers have the well-being of children, families, and staff at their core.

How can I find child care when a Philadelphia daycare center is closed?

Having a sitter or two familiar with your family can be extremely helpful when you need back-up care. With the Sittercity app, you can search for local babysitters and nannies, or post a job detailing your needs, and have interested child care providers reach out to you directly. The Sittercity app has built-in screening tools that give you control to hire with ease and confidence, which include secure messaging, interview booking, professional references, and background checks.

What is the difference between daycare and in-home child care in Philadelphia?

With a babysitter or nanny in your home, your child gets personalized, one-on-one attention in an environment controlled by you. Your child care will match the exact schedule you need, all in the convenience of your home. If desired, you can also get house management help from your in-home provider. A daycare facility tends to be a more cost-effective option that takes place in a child-specific setting. Most will have built-in programming and structured socialization for all of the children in attendance. In the end, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to child care—pick the environment that’s best for you.

Yes. Bright Horizons in Philadelphia accommodates a wide range of special and individualized needs in our group programs. We offer inclusive programs that focus on each child’s strengths and support a collaborative team approach with the teacher, director, specialists, and families. The team will work closely together to maximize your child’s opportunities for learning, growth, and development, and minimize any barriers or safety issues that a group program may present.

What Reopening Means for Child Care in Philadelphia | Department of Public Health

The following guidelines help control the risk of spreading COVID-19among children and staff in kindergartens and preschool institutions. To receive City of Philadelphia updates on COVID-19, text “COVIDPHL” to 888-777
______________________________________________

By following the guidelines below, we will help protect the health and safety of children and workers at kindergartens and preschools reopening in Philadelphia.

Advice for Parents and Guardians

Building healthy habits

  • Wear a snug-fitting mask that fully covers the nose and mouth when bringing and picking up children.
  • Clean hands with hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol or wash hands for at least 20 seconds before handing over or picking up a child.

If anyone in your family is quarantined or self-isolating due to COVID, notify facility staff.

  • Wash bedding and other items that come into contact with your baby’s skin at least once a week.

Maintain social distancing

  • When bringing or picking up children, stay within 6 feet of other people.
  • Bring and pick up children at designated times.
  • Avoid public places with large crowds.

Leave your child at home if they are ill or have had contact with someone with COVID-19

  • If your child has a COVID-like illness, do not bring them to the child care facility.
    • COVID-like illness is defined by the presence of at least ONE of the main symptoms (sudden or persistent cough, shortness of breath, sudden loss of smell, sudden loss of taste) OR at least TWO additional symptoms (fever, chills, muscle pain, headache , sore throat, nausea/vomiting, diarrhoea, fatigue, nasal congestion/runny nose).
  • If anyone living with your child develops symptoms of COVID, it is recommended that that person be tested AND go into isolation until test results are available. Find a Testing Center in Philadelphia
  • If a facility worker or child has been in contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 10 days, they should return home or stay home in quarantine and get tested if possible. Detailed recommendations for calculating the terms of mandatory self-isolation and quarantine are given here.

Keeping in touch with the kindergarten

It is important to be aware of new rules that may be introduced in the institution. Find out what rules must be followed when bringing and picking up children, and how you can be informed of changes.

For example, when children are admitted to an institution, daily information about the health of family members (including the child’s temperature) must be reported. Please pick up your children at the designated time. Drop off and pick up times may change and differ from what you’re used to.

To protect the health of children and facility staff, parents and guardians agree to keep children at home if they develop a COVID-like illness. Learn more about the Philadelphia Department of Health 9 Parent/Guardian Agreement Form0003

After returning to kindergarten, monitor the child and inform the staff of the institution about changes in the child’s needs:

  • How is your child’s health?
  • How does he cope with learning?
  • What is the daily routine in kindergarten?
  • What activities does your child enjoy?

Guidelines for Kindergartens

The duties of a kindergarten are described below.

Building healthy habits

  • All employees must wear tight-fitting masks that completely cover the nose and mouth.
  • Employees and children must maintain good hand hygiene throughout the day by washing their hands or cleaning them with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
  • The facility must arrange for medical examinations for staff, or staff must be instructed to self-diagnose symptoms.
  • Health screenings for family members must be arranged at the facility, or families must be instructed to self-check for symptoms.
  • The facility must frequently clean and disinfect rooms and frequently touched surfaces using approved cleaning products.

Social distancing

  • Increase the distance between children’s beds or mattresses.
  • No more than 22 people (including teachers and students) can be in the classroom at the same time.
  • Limit the number of visitors and volunteers where possible.

Restriction of group meetings

  • Excursions
  • Visiting public playgrounds/sports areas
  • Contact between children outside the classroom

Daily health checks

All preschools must establish a checklist for daily checks on students, staff and caregivers. The list should include the following items:

  • Temperature increase
  • Symptoms similar to COVID
  • External examination for signs of disease
  • Contact with others who have been diagnosed with COVID

The municipality has published a sample screening form and other resources for agencies to develop their own safety protocol.

Detailed guidelines for kindergartens can be found here.

If facility management believes that any child or staff has had COVID-19, call the Philadelphia Department of Health at 215-685-6741 OR email [email protected] for further instructions.

Facilities must report confirmed cases using an online form developed by the Philadelphia Department of Health. This will help to trace contacts and collect additional information.

Information on this single form is also sent to the OCDEL Bureau of Certification, Early Learning Resource Center #18, Philadelphia School District, and the Office of Families and Children (Office of Children and Families). In some cases, agencies must report confirmed cases to other government agencies, so the form allows you to save a copy of the report to send to other agencies.
