Englishwoman Anna Davis has been living in Texas for thirty years. Her house has always been surrounded by a nostalgic traditional English garden – with a lawn, ponds, a stream, flower beds and flower borders. But at some point, Anna wanted “local flavor”, because El Paso is almost Mexico. And then Anna turned to landscape designer Martha Schwartz.

The Cactus Labyrinth adjoins a quite traditional English garden with lawns, a pond and flower beds.

As a result, her garden has a “special section” – a piece of land measuring eleven by eight meters, where there are no plants other than cacti. “Desert Flowers” flaunt against the backdrop of a labyrinth of multi-colored concrete walls. The open labyrinth, where intricate corridors lead to hidden corners, was designed based on the work of Texas celebrity, minimalist designer Donald Judd – Schwartz is delighted with his art installations.

Martha tries to be humorous with her landscape subjects: “Plants are like children and dogs, you have to play with them. ” She is sure that in order to create a spectacular garden, it is not necessary to spend a lot of money. She is sickened by gigantomania, which landscape designers and environmentalists often sin. “All great work must begin with small things. People on our planet live in far from ideal conditions, among asphalt and shopping centers. Before dealing with national parks, it is this environment that needs to be transformed. Take an example from the Japanese: they are sorely lacking in land, and they play with space and time with the help of bonsai, stones and moss,” says Marta.

Small openings in the walls and sharp shadows remind of Spain, and an abundance of cacti – of Mexico, which is within easy reach from here.

There is a real Japanese influence in her creation – for example, a mountain of gravel in the “golden room” of the labyrinth. But in Martha’s eyes, this slide is “a South American volcano and at the same time a mound of industrial waste.
