Only the name of kindergarten

In different cantons of Switzerland, children start attending kindergarten at the age of 4 or 5. In the canton of Graubünden, where Daniil Savinov ended up, children are only admitted to kindergarten from the age of 5. For the first year in a foreign country, the boy attended the so-called play groups organized by private entrepreneurs. This is an analogue of Russian groups of short-term stay of children without food and quiet time. Little has changed in the free public kindergarten for a child. “Compared to kindergartens in Russia, in Switzerland they are only the name. From the age of 4–5, children begin to prepare for school. They are in the kindergarten only from 8 am to 11 am. Parents are prohibited from bringing and taking away children. The child must come to the garden and walk back home on their own. This is well known to everyone, so the drivers here drive their cars very carefully. At first, of course, it was wild, scary, they accompanied him at a distance, peeping from behind the houses, – Irina recalls. – But with time you get used to everything. Moreover, children have bibs of a certain color with reflectors: for kindergarteners this is one color, for schoolchildren it is another. So that mother does not work

After two years of kindergarten, children are assigned to schools according to their abilities.

If a child does not have enough knowledge and skills for school, he can be left for the second year in kindergarten.

Daniel went to the 1st grade in the city of Chur is the capital of the canton of Graubünden.

At first, the lessons went only until lunch, and homework took five minutes to complete.

“Here, education is designed for the fact that mother does not work and is at home almost all the time. By law, a child under the age of 12 cannot stay at home alone. One of the adults must be with him. But here the wage system is very flexible. You can get both 20% and 30% of the rate. In this regard, Switzerland is very different from Russia. Roughly speaking, you can devote 2-3 hours a day to work in Switzerland, and this is considered normal. The remuneration is appropriate, but this is enough here, ”Irina notes. nine0007

Schoolchildren have a lunch break in the middle of the day. It is assumed that in the 1.5 hours that are allotted for rest and food, the child can freely go home. Meals in schools are organized differently. Some have canteens with a full balanced and varied menu. In other schools, like Daniil’s, there is no canteen.

“But for a group of children who cannot have lunch at home, meals are organized. We had a group of 10-15 people from all grades: both sixth-graders and first-graders. The food was brought ready. Two years ago, the administration built a separate building in which they organized an extended day group and lunches for children. The school is responsible for the organization,” Irina explains. nine0007

Every year the school workload naturally increases. By 5th grade, afternoon classes are held every day except Wednesday.

“In the middle of the week, on Wednesday, in all schools in Switzerland it is not accepted to set lessons in the afternoon. It is believed that this time throughout the country should be free for children,” says the student’s mother.

By the end of school, children must master three compulsory foreign languages. In the 4th grade, the Italian language appears in the schedule, in the 5th grade – English, and in the 6th – French. The order of appearance of additional foreign languages in different cantons may be different.

“Daniel has no problems with languages. It comes easy to him. Children enjoy learning foreign languages and cultures. Here it is considered normal practice to go to Italy as a class for a week just to learn the language. I really don’t know if such trips are organized as additional classes or as part of a mandatory program. But I heard that high school students went,” says Irina. nine0007

Physical education in the school schedule occurs three times a week. A lot of time is devoted to the health and physical development of schoolchildren.

“Here, physical education is a very serious matter. Children pass the standards, they go in for sports very tightly. Before the pandemic, the school organized a class trip to the pool once a week. Two hours in the water were a must. For three years in a row, Daniil took 2nd place in cantonal competitions in his category. In addition, every child must be able to ski. The Swiss have been putting their children on skis since the age of three. Especially sports families, when the parents are young and willingly spend the whole weekend on the mountain.” nine0007

But at the same time, according to Irina, it cannot be said that all Swiss people skate without exception.

“Although if the child wants to ride, then there are weekend camps or Wednesday afternoons. Kindergarten organizes a ski camp for kindergartners. We had a week. Daniil was trained to ski at the age of five. Every day for a week, the kindergarten organized such an intensive course for free: they were taken to the mountains and taught there. Parents were only required to equip the child. We had to buy skis, of course. Local residents do not even have a question about the availability of skis, as this is a matter of course here. The school organizes it differently: for younger students, there can be trips twice a season for 1-2 days, for high school students, the school can organize a trip with an overnight stay for a week, ”says the woman. nine0007

In addition to school physical education, Daniil attended additional judo classes for two more years. I got to the section by public transport on my own already at the age of seven.

As for other subjects, in addition to mathematics and German, which are available almost every day, children study religion (with free attendance at will), music, natural sciences.

About grades and math plan

The highest grade in a Swiss school is 6. Before the 2nd grade, they don’t give grades, they don’t keep diaries, like in a Russian school.

“Very often there are exams that can be compared with independent work in a Russian school. They go through some topic and, when they have completed it, they write tests. At the same time, the leaflet indicates how many points you can score maximum for the test, ”Irina notes.

Grades are of great importance for determining the student’s future educational path. Already from the 6th grade, children can be divided depending on their academic performance. This is how classes are formed with stronger students who will strive to enter the university, as well as weaker classes, whose destiny is secondary education. nine0007

Up to 10 classes in parallel. How is the school in Israel

Homework is assigned not for every day, as usual in Russian schools, but for a week.

“In mathematics, for example, there is a mathematical plan – you have to solve a certain number of problems and examples in order to get a minimum positive mark, and if you want more, then you are additionally asked. In German and foreign languages, there are usually no such exercises as we had in Russian, the emphasis is on vocabulary. For a week, for example, they give 20 new words that the child must learn, and then they write a vocabulary dictation. I, as a mother, put my signature under each assessment right in the notebook, ”says Daniil’s mother. nine0007

Literature assignments also differ from our list of books for the summer:

“Now, for example, Daniel’s class is divided into three groups, and they compete with each other: each group needs to get as many read pages as possible. They are allowed to read any books they want, even Harry Potter, even fairy tales – it doesn’t matter. The group that wins will receive some kind of promotion or prize.”

Also, in groups, children prepare and defend their projects. Sometimes it can be independent creative performances. nine0007

“In 2nd grade, Daniil was preparing a presentation poster about his favorite animals. He chose a hen with chickens. He cut, pasted, drew something himself: what they eat, who they fear, where they live, and so on. He did this work with great interest and then spoke in front of the class. By the way, I still have full confidence in him, with regard to doing homework, I do not interfere, ”says the student’s mother.

At the age of 17, a ready-made worker with experience

In high school, children can choose an enterprise where they want to go to learn any professional skills. nine0007

“Open days are held when schoolchildren can come and see what the company does, how it works. If they are interested, they submit resumes to 2-3 enterprises in order to be trained there. And this does not necessarily mean further employment. This is exactly education in the enterprise. This is something similar to a Russian vocational school after the 8th or 9th grade. Here is such a school right at the enterprise. That is, the child spends two days at school, studying theory, and works at the enterprise for three days, ”says Irina.
