The Waldorf (or Steiner) educational model, first created in 1919 in Stuttgart, Germany, is based on the educational philosophy of Rudolf Steiner; now it is spreading all over the world. There are over 2,000 early childhood programs and over 1,000 Waldorf schools worldwide. [1]
Most Waldorf schools are independent, but they share a common vision of human development and an educational approach in which a practical, developmentally appropriate and integrated curriculum is fundamental to the development of a healthy child. Of great interest is the comparison of Waldorf methods with modern discoveries in the field of brain research in the field of effective learning. Independent schools in Canada, the United States and Mexico cooperate through the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America [www.whywaldorfworks.org]. Schools in the US do not receive government parenting scholarships but must provide their own funds for financial aid; many other countries around the world support private schools as a percentage of the cost of education for students.
Waldorf schools were pioneering in the early 20th century. Co-education, classes with students from different socioeconomic backgrounds, and incorporating practical training into the academic curriculum were new ideas. They were closed by the Nazi Party during the war years because they taught “freethinkers”. These days, long years of cycling (the same form teacher moves around the classroom with the class) and leading students to create their own “textbooks” are unique approaches. Other innovations, such as the provision of long (1.5 to 2 hour) study sessions for focused work and the integration of learning across multiple subjects, have become mainstream. While the idea of integrating the arts into academic learning is now recognized as an effective learning strategy, Waldorf schools are still unique in the way they do so.
Curriculum
Waldorf schools are firmly opposed to some of the current trends in education. Technology-assisted learning in preschool and early childhood is not practiced in Waldorf schools; technology in secondary schools is unusual compared to librarianship. Waldorf schools are known for teacher-led classes and hands-on learning using open-ended toys made from natural materials and low-tech tools. Waldorf’s early childhood programs are resisting pressure to learn preschool; Teachers carefully create an environment that allows for exploration, simulation and play on their own, insisting that these goals are age appropriate. Waldorf schools question the effectiveness of frequent standardized testing; methods such as observational assessment, task-specific assessments, and descriptive reporting are considered more valuable.
Licensing
Waldorf School of Baltimore is licensed by the Maryland Board of Education, [2] is a fully accredited member of the Maryland Association of Independent Schools (GOALS), [3] and is a full member and accredited by the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America and the Waldorf Schools Association of North America (AWSNA). 2019 Winner:
The Way You Make Me Feel written by Maureen Goo
Clara Sheen lives for jokes and destruction. When she goes too far with one joke, her father sentences her to summer work on his food truck, KoBra, along with her uptight classmate Rose Carver. Not the carefree summer that Clara had imagined. But maybe Rose isn’t so bad after all. Maybe the guy named Hamlet (yes, Hamlet) who is in love with her is pretty cute. Maybe Clara actually feels invested in the dads business. What if taking this summer seriously means Clara has to leave her old self behind?
