Dover Castle, medieval “key to England”

In the narrowest part of the English Channel, next to the snow-white cliffs of Dover, Dover Castle is a gigantic fortress whose history is as great as its walls. Only three dozen kilometers separate Great Britain from the coast of France in this place, which was the reason for the emergence of a powerful fortification designed to protect the harbor from unexpected enemies. The “Key to England” is called Dover Castle, which has had to take part in countless battles and military conflicts, from the Middle Ages to the Second World War.

Dover Castle, the history of the fortress

Nearly a thousand years ago at the site
the present Dover Castle were Roman fortifications, from which to our
Only the lighthouse survived for days. In the 10th century in Dover there was already
Anglo-Saxon fort, and the city itself was part of the powerful alliance of the Five
ports. In the 11th century, the church of St. Mary was built in the center of the fort.
Castro, whose bell tower was located in a Roman lighthouse. In 1066, in
period of the Norman conquest of England Dover Castle was captured
army of William the Conqueror, who not only did not destroy it, but
even interrupted his military campaign for several days, ordering the soldiers
add new fortifications.

Late 12th century obsolete
land and wooden fortifications of the Normans were rebuilt by order
King Henry II, who paid almost all of his annual income (6
thousand pounds sterling) to the court architect Maurice for the construction
a huge and powerful donjon, called the Great Tower.
The construction lasted from 1180 to 1185, and upon completion of the Great
The tower became not only the gate to the kingdom, but also a symbol of the royal
power and authority. Various royal ceremonies were held here, and Henry’s visiting court was also located.

After the death of Henry II by construction
the castle at Dover was occupied by his sons, especially John Landless,
who moved to Dover Castle in 1204 after losing his
possessions in Normandy. By order of John, the castle was fortified
defensive walls, and also during his reign was erected
many commercial buildings. July to October 1216 Dover
the castle was besieged by the troops of the French prince, the future King Louis
VIII, who was invited to the English throne by rebellious barons.

At that time, Ludovic had already been sworn in
many lords, the castles of Rochester and Canterbury were also in his power,
but Dover continued to belong to John the Landless. Managed the defense
castle Hubert de Burgh, adviser to the king, influential political and
court official who managed to prepare the garrison for a long
siege. For three months, Louis’s troops unsuccessfully stormed Dover Castle,
caused him a lot of destruction, but they could not take him. In October
1216, Louis was forced to sign a peace treaty and return to
London. John’s son, Henry III subsequently greatly expanded
territory of Dover Castle, which extended to the famous White
cliffs of Dover, chalk cliffs on the coast of Pas de Calais.

In the 16th century, the defensive function of the castle
became less significant than before, as Henry VIII concentrated
all forces for the construction and strengthening of the castle of Dial, located above
along the coast. During this period, walls were fortified at Dover Castle and
a platform was created for artillery pieces, which began to recruit
popularity in the military. The upheavals of the English Revolution in the 17th century
went relatively smoothly for Dover Castle, although it was in
royalist hands. In 1642, Dover Castle was without much resistance
surrendered to the troops of parliamentarians, thanks to which he avoided plunder and
destruction, like many royal castles.

Late 18th/early 19th century at Dover Castle
there was a large-scale reconstruction caused by the threat of invasion
Napoleonic troops. Supervised the creation of a system of external fortifications
outstanding engineer, General William Twiss, who created not only
several new bastions and firing positions, but also was the author of a very
original project for the placement of a soldier’s garrison in the tunnels under
lock. Tunnels carved into the rock at a depth of 15 meters became
the first underground barracks in the history of Great Britain, in which
more than 2 thousand soldiers and their equipment could be accommodated at the same time.

In the 1810s, at the end of the war with Napoleon, the tunnels were handed over to coastal services that fought against smugglers. In the middle of the 19th century, Dover Castle was in a semi-forgotten state, no one used the tunnels, as the coast guard moved closer to the water. No one could have imagined that after a whole century the tunnels of Dover Castle would again acquire national significance and would be actively used during the Second World War. In 1939, a bomb shelter, a hospital and a military headquarters were equipped under the castle, and in the post-war years it was planned to create shelters for the government in the tunnels in case of a nuclear war.

Legends of Dover Castle

Dover Castle has several sinister stories and grim legends, as a great citadel with an ancient and turbulent history should be. Among them is a story about a human sacrifice made by the builders of the castle to please the spirits, echoing the Japanese ritual “hitobashira” .

While Dover Castle was being built, the masons were amazed at how quickly one of its towers (the Peverell Tower) was collapsing. They continued to build it, but it stubbornly fell apart, and no one could understand why. The builders were not inclined to blame themselves, so they decided that all the destruction was the result of the malicious actions of the spirits who longed for repose. An elderly woman with a dog passed by the walls of the castle, the men seized both of them and walled them up alive as a sacrifice to angry spirits. The curse of the old woman, which she invoked on their heads, did not frighten the builders. And after the construction was completed, the foreman crashed to death, falling from the tower. According to rumors, the same curse worked. It should be noted that in the Middle Ages, people were often laid in the foundation as a sacrifice to evil spirits.

There is also a legend about how a certain soldier from Dover Castle killed a man with a stick. Donald, that was his name, was sure that he would escape punishment, since there was not a single witness to the crime around. After that, the soldier made a strange deal with himself. Sticking a stick into the ground not far from the road, he thought that he would be safe until the stick took root. Later, his regiment was sent abroad. When he returned almost 20 years later and Donald came to Dover, he found to his amazement that the stick had turned into a beautiful elm. Overwhelmed with guilt for what he had done many years ago, he confessed to his crime. He was tried, found guilty and hung next to his tree.

Dover Castle has its own ghost, the drummer boy. His headless ghost haunts the castle regularly. The boy was on an assignment from his commander involving a large sum of money, but in the process he was attacked by thugs. He bravely defended himself and tried to keep the money that was entrusted to him. However, there were more opponents, and he was beheaded.

A medium named David Akora conducted an investigation on the spot and concluded that the boy had been attacked by his regimental comrades. He suggested that the headless body of the boy was found in 1802, while the head itself, oddly enough, was never found. Akora was convinced that the boy was from Cork, Ireland, and that his mother’s name was Mary. He also added that he would try to free the boy’s spirit.

Dover Castle, architecture and landmarks

Today Dover Castle has
the status of a historical monument of national importance, enjoys
huge popularity among tourists. Hundreds of thousands of travelers visit
annually the largest British castle, which hosts guided tours
through medieval buildings and secret military tunnels, as well as
various exhibitions and expositions are organized. Visitors in the tunnels
can see several interactive exhibitions about
Operation Dynamo (evacuation of British and French troops from
Dunkirk), about the heroic work of military doctors in the underground hospital, about
everyday life of the “tunnel” service during the Napoleonic wars.

A few years ago, a large-scale exposition “The Great Tower” was opened in the castle, in which restorers created interiors from the era of the reign of King Henry II. Masters of various crafts have manually recreated over 1000 exhibits (furniture, dishes, clothes, weapons, etc.), which help to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.

This exhibition is the largest historical reenactment of medieval life in the UK. In addition to museum expositions, Dover Castle often hosts various thematic exhibitions, educational and entertainment events, which will be interesting for both adults and children to take part in.

Dover, UK – city guide

Dover is located near the extreme south-east point of England. The city is located in the county of Kent near the Pas de Calais. Dover was badly damaged by German air raids during World War II. However, at least two of its attractions deserve the attention of tourists. First of all, it is worth mentioning the famous White Cliffs of Dover, up to 107 meters high. These Cretaceous rock formations have served sailors as a symbol of approaching or moving away from England for centuries.
