Our curriculum is based on the Reggio Emilia inspired approach where the child’s interests and needs guide their education. Watch your child flourish as they guide themselves through our regular class or summer camp.

People begin to form their own personality during early years of development. Creekside Kids believes that children are endowed with “a hundred languages” through which they can express their ideas.

Creekside Kids Beginnings

Creekside Kids opened because a district mother and former teacher recognized the need for high quality holistic care and education to the families of the Cheyenne Mountain School District‘s preschool. Many of these families require highly flexible extended care options while attending D-12’s preschool.

Percussion Class at Summer Camp

We also serve district staff members and members of the public who need childcare that follows the school year calendar. We are unaffiliated with the Cheyenne Mountain School District (CMSD), but we are housed on-site at Cañon School.  This provides a safe and easy transition to and from the preschool classrooms to child care.

We provide escorted pick up and drop off at the door of the preschool classroom and high-quality programming based on children’s needs and interests. We also service families who do not participate in the D12 Preschool Program.

Creekside Kids Programs

Fine Motor Skills Development at Creekside Kids

Creekside Kids partnered with the  Space Foundation STARS Program (Science, Technology and Academic Readiness for Space program) to develop our space and technology curriculum.

Creekside Kids emphasizes the foundational pre-literacy skills of phonological awareness and phonics.  Colorado school districts are required by the Read Act to assess the literacy skills of all kindergarteners using the DIBELs Assessment. Our students learn pre-literacy skills through games, the arts and long term explorations.

Peep and the Big Wide World

We partnered with a PBS pilot program that developed the Peep and the Big World educational outreach and use this study program as part of our science curriculum.  This science-based curriculum includes literacy and math as well as long-term, hands-on, inquiry-based study of science topics such as: color and light, ramps and inclined planes, plants, seasons, units of measure, and physical properties of water.

During Cheyenne Mountain School District’s spring and summer break, the center has science based camps to offer families. Hello! My name is Emma and I am the Program Director of Little Sunshine’s Playhouse and Preschool of Colorado Springs. I started at Little Sunshine’s Playhouse in 2015 in the infant classrooms and quickly fell in love with the philosophy and passion that this company has for nurturing young children. Since then I worked my way up to program director through hard work and dedication to our children here in Colorado Springs.

The best part of working for Little Sunshine’s Playhouse is providing a safe and nurturing environment for children, where they feel comfortable exploring and learning concepts. I also love to make everlasting bonds with all the families and to be able to support them in whatever they need.

On a personal note, I am originally from England and moved to the US in 2009 with my husband Eddie and have been working with young children for over 15 years.

I look forward to getting to know your family better and watching your little one grow and learn here at LSP.

Hello, My name is Wendy and I am the Assistant Director of Little Sunshine’s Playhouse and Preschool of Colorado Springs. I have been part of the LSP family for three years and I am grateful to call this place my second home. I love interacting with all the families and working side by side to ensure the best for our students.

I have been working with children for six years. I have always known I wanted to work with children, watching them learn and grow into their own personalities brings joy to my heart, and loving them is just one of the perks of my job.

In my free time, I enjoy the outdoors, reading and I am currently working towards a degree in Human Services.  

I am dedicated to Little sunshine’s Playhouse and I will strive to make it a wonderful experience for everyone.

Infant Program (6 weeks – 1 year)

Our highly trained infant teachers partner with you to ensure your baby’s developmental needs are met every step along the way. Our nursery staff create predictable routines and nurturing classroom environments that foster social and emotional development in your baby.  

Toddler Program (1-2 years)

Home Day Care Permit | Colorado Springs

There are three major types of daycare applications. The boxes below describe each type and the process to obtain the appropriate permit or application.

A day care home permit is allowed as an accessory use in any residential zone unless prohibited by the neighborhood and/or development covenants, and the daycare is limited in size. A Colorado State license is required to operate a home day care. 

Be sure that you check for any covenants and/or restrictions that may exist at your property prior to submitting an application. Covenants and/or restrictions are additional requirements that apply in neighborhoods and supersede City Code. If a covenant and/or restriction prohibits a home based business, a Home Day Care would not be allowed at the property.  The City does not enforce covenants and/or restrictions nor do they have jurisdiction over them. If you have questions about your covenants and/or restrictions, please contact your Homeowner Association.

Application Process

A $120 non-refundable review fee is required upon submittal of the application. Once approved, the daycare may obtain their State of Colorado licensure and then continue without any renewal requirement. 

• Home Day Care Permit Application

Daycare Home Size Restrictions

To qualify for approval under the Daycare Home Permit, a daycare must accommodate no more than a total of six (6) children on a full-time basis plus two (2) additional children on a part-time basis. 

Employees

Unlike Home Occupations, one part-time employee who does not reside at the home is allowed to work at the daycare home. When the normal daycare provider cannot be present, the substitute provider is allowed to work.

Signage

Since home daycares are accessory uses and are located in neighborhoods, a small wall sign no more than two (2) square feet is allowed to be placed on the home.

Outdoor Space

State-required outdoor space must not be located within any front building setback (see Property Zoning) and must be screened from adjacent properties to reduce play area noise.

Additional Information

Childcare facilities are licensed by the Colorado Department of Human Services.

A large daycare home can allow 7-12 children in a residential zone district, a conditional use application must be submitted and reviewed by the City Land Use Review Division prior to approval of a large daycare home. This application requires an internal review process and a final decision by City Planning Commission. If you are interested in learning more about this application type, please submit a request for a Pre-Application Meeting. A planner from the LUR Division will meet with you to determine the issues and necessary applications relating to your request.

For licensed large daycare homes, contact both the Regional Building Department and the Colorado Springs Fire Department to determine if additional Building and Fire Code requirements apply.

A development plan or conditional use must be approved prior to using a office or commercial building for a daycare center.   The first city park in Colorado Springs, included in the city’s original plans in 1871, is Acacia Park. It was originally called Acacia Square or North Park. General William Jackson Palmer donated land to create Acacia and additional parks, including: Horn Park, Monument Valley Park, North Cheyenne Canyon, Palmer Park, Pioneer Square Park (South Park), Lake Prospect, and Bear Creek Canyon Park . He donated a total of 1,270 acres of land, some of which was also used for scenic driveways, tree-lined roads, footpaths, and trails. The Perkins heirs donated the Garden of the Gods to the city at 1909 year. ^[1]

  Park Types

  State Park

  The largest park in El Paso County 1,680 acres Cheyenne Mountain State Park, which is located in southern Colorado Springs. Its terrain ranges from steppe meadows and scrub oak to Douglas fir and ponderosa pine on the peaks on the west side of the park. Throughout the year, it offers camping and picnicking, 16 miles of hiking and biking trails, and wildlife viewing such as red fox, black bear, deer, elk, and mountain lions. There is a visitor center where visitors can learn about the park’s programs and activities. The park has facilities for group activities. ^[2]

  City Parks

  The City of Colorado Springs has community, regional, and neighborhood parks. ^[3]

  • Neighborhood parks are up to six acres in size and may include playgrounds, picnic areas, walking paths, and athletic fields or courts. ^[3] There are 135 parks in the district, totaling 903.9 acres as of May 2013. ^[4]
  • Community parks can range from 35 to 175 acres and offer great opportunities for sports such as skateboarding, line hockey, multi-purpose fields, and other sports facilities. There may be picnic areas, reserved gazebos for large group picnics and gardens. ^[3] As of May 2013, there were 700 acres of public parks, including Memorial Park and Monument Valley Park. ^[5]
  • Regional parks typically cover more than 100 acres and offer outdoor recreation, educational programs, picnic areas, and protect the park’s natural resources. ^[3] The city’s regional parks as of May 2013 totaled 7,390.6 acres. ^[6] Regional parks include Garden of the Gods, Bear Creek Canyon Park, North Cheyenne Canyon Park, Ute Valley Park, and Palmer Park. The North Slope Recreation Area is located along the Pikes Peak Highway. Jimmy’s Camp Creek Park (Camp Jimmy’s) is an undeveloped park in Eastern U.S. Highway 24. ^[7]

  Open Space

  Colorado Springs has a total of 4,702.3 acres of open space. Natural settings include rock formations, prairie grasslands, pine forests, hillsides, and foothills. Some of the key open space properties include: Red Canyon Open Space, Austin Bluffs Open Space, Stratton Open Space, backdrop of Cheyenne Mountain State Park, and Blodgett Peak Open Space. Footprints are often found in open spaces. Some open space includes picnic areas; fishing, for example, at Pikeview Reservoir No. 1; and wetlands in the open space of Sinthon Pond. The Beidleman Ecological Center is located in Sondermann Park. ^[8]

  An additional 400 acres are used for Special Resource Zones, which are small open areas throughout the city. They range from less than one acre to 138.6 acres at Stetson Hills Open Space. ^[8]

  The Trails and Open Space Coalition is an organization whose mission is to “conserve and preserve open space in Colorado Springs.” ^[9] Individuals may volunteer to participate in projects such as the Waldo Canyon fire recovery, or projects on designated trails or open spaces such as Red Rock Canyon, Intemann Trail, Austin Bluffs Open Space, or Palmer Park, and these are just some of them. ^{[9] [10]}

  Sports Complexes

  In addition to sports fields and courts in city parks, there are also sports complexes of 20 acres or more dedicated to sports programs. Facilities may include a combination of baseball, softball, football, and soccer fields; tennis court; skate parks, roller skating rinks, water bases and recreation centers. ^[3] Sports facilities include Four Diamond Sports Complex on Northern Nevada, Gossage Sports Complex on Mark Dabling Boulevard, Sky View Sports Complex on Resnick Drive, El Pomar Youth Sports Center on Executive Circle, and Leon Young Youth Baseball Complex on S. Chelton . There are also two undeveloped complexes, the Lawrence Oaks Sports Complex on N. Powers Boulevard and the Tutt Lot on Tutt Boulevard. ^{[11] [12]}

  Nature Centers

  Bear Creek Nature Center Trails

  Bear Creek Regional Park The Nature Center offers self-guided tours and tours, orientation programs, presentations, classes, and special events. The nature center is free. The trails cross prairies, foothills and peaks. This is El Paso County Park, like the Fountain Creek Nature Center, just south of Colorado Springs in Fountain City. ^[13]

  Dog parks

  Bear Creek Dog Park Trails

  The city’s dog parks include the 25-acre Bear Creek Dog Park on the west side of the city, Cheyenne Meadows Dog Park to the south, Palmer Park Dog Park to the north, and Rampart Dog Park, the northernmost park. ^{[14] [15]}

  Dog racing runs along the Dog Loop Trail to Red Canyon Open Space and east of the Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site in the Garden of the Gods. Yucca Flats in Palmer Park also has a dog run. ^{[14] [15]} Colorado Springs was named Best Dog City #1 Men’s Health and #1 “America’s Pet Friendly City” Forbes magazine. ^[14]

The train ride is especially memorable, offering some of the most impressive views on a three-hour trip.

Now the remains of numerous settlements have been found, there are multi-storey apartment buildings, sometimes 5 floors high, with stairs, passages and corridors. Some settlements are carved into the rock. It is believed that this was done for security reasons – such dwellings were not visible from the top of the plateau. If much is known about the Anasazi culture, the big mystery is the reason why they left their homes at one fine moment and it is not clear where they moved. The museum is extremely interesting for both young children and adults, there is a lot of excellent information presented and it also looks very picturesque. Its main exposition, of course, is those very “under-rock” dwellings. At the beginning of the 20th century, they were transported here from a nearby canyon, dismantled and carefully reassembled. Thus, although not in their “real” places, they became available to the general public. The museum became very popular. The museum’s website mentions a curious fact – it turns out that a group of Indian dancers who considered themselves descendants of the ancient Anasazi were allowed to settle in these dwellings. Several generations of the same family periodically lived here and the last family left in 1984. Now museum visitors can climb numerous stairs, run along the corridors and look into the rooms.   Colorado Springs is a popular resort and winter sports center in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, at the foot of Pikes Peak; it is there that the US Olympic Committee is based, and therefore it was a logical decision to create a museum of the national Olympic movement there.

  Officially opening today, the museum is located on the edge of downtown, near the railroad tracks, which will be crossed by a footbridge, also designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, this fall. It will link the building and adjacent public spaces with the park located behind the railway.

  The building of the Olympic and Paralympic Museum resembles an envelope when viewed from above, although the architects based the image on the movement of an athlete, for example, spinning a hammer before throwing. Inside there are four exhibition spaces – “petals”, connected by a gentle ramp. Outside, the façades are clad in anodized aluminium: over 9,000 rhomboid panels, each slightly different in shape.

  The interior is dominated by an atrium with skylights and exhibition spaces opening onto balconies. Sunlight enters the halls from the atrium and through the corner “slots” of the “envelope” shell. This lighting scheme also serves to orient visitors.

  The entire museum is completely barrier-free: a wide ramp connecting the floors, a cafe with only movable seats that can be easily replaced with a wheelchair, a cinema hall where two rows of seats can be removed and accommodate 26 spectators in wheelchairs, a smooth, wheel-friendly floor covering, glass railings that do not close the review, etc. The inspection scenario itself is the same for any visitor: everyone goes up to the top floor by elevator, and then goes down ramp

  In addition to a cinema hall with 130 seats, the museum has an event space and a “council room” – both with terraces and panoramic mountain views. The cafe, which can play the role of an educational center, is placed in a separate volume with a green roof. The recess between the two buildings is a small “amphitheater” for 230 people, which can be used in winter and summer for public broadcasts of Olympic competitions.
