The Hidden Cost of Child Care In Colorado
It’s Harder Than Ever For Families To Afford Child Care
When infant care is nearly 5% more expensive than average state rent and 94% more expensive than tuition at an in-state public college, there’s a problem. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states that an affordable cost of Child Care is 7% of annual household income or less. By that token, less than 10% of families in the state can actually afford child/day care. When you consider parents with two or more kids, things look even more dire.
How Colorado´s Child Care Compares Against the 10 states with the highest Child Care, preschool, infant care, and day care annual costs as of 2023:
- Massachusetts ($20,913)
- California ($16,945)
- Minnesota ($16,087)
- Connecticut ($15,591)
- New York ($15,394)
- Maryland ($15,335)
- Colorado ($15,325)
- Washington ($14,554)
- Virginia ($14,063)
- Illinois ($13,802)
FAQS and STATS
What is a fair price for Child Care?
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) says Child Care should take up less than 7% of a family’s annual income. The US average price of Child Care is a little over $11,000 annually per child.
Colorado is one of the few states where the average Child Care cost for a four-year-old child is more than $1,000 per month. Families in Colorado can spend up to $50,000 or more on Child Care before their child can begin attending school.
What’s the average cost of a Child Care provider in Colorado?
The average cost of a Child Care provider in Colorado is $16.68 per hour. With the minimum wage in Colorado being $13.65 per hour, you can expect to pay a hourly rate between $13.65 and $25. A Child Care provider’s hourly rate can depend on their location, responsibilities, qualifications, and the type of care needed.
What is universal pre-kindergarten?
Universal preschool describes the push to enact policies that ensure all families can access government-funded, high quality preschool. With the cost of day care skyrocketing, and many families unable to afford children, universal pre-kindergarten could lead to more parental security across the nation.
STATS
- Infant care for one child would take up 21.0% of a median family’s income in Colorado.
- Parents would have more opportunities to enter the labor force. If Child Care were capped at 7% of income, 26,742 more parents would have the option to work.
- This reform would expand Colorado’s economy by 0.9%. That’s $3.1 billion of new economic activity.
- The average Child Care cost burden is 28%, meaning that over a quarter of every dollar earned by a median-income family goes toward paying for child care.
- In rural areas of the state such as Rio Blanco and Phillips counties, the Child Care cost burden is as high as 44%.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the cost of Child Care in Colorado can be a significant financial burden for families. However, there are options available to help alleviate the cost, such as subsidized Child Care, home-based child care providers, employer child care benefits, and community initiatives. If you are a parent in Colorado, it is important to carefully research your options and determine what works best for your family’s needs and budget.

Eva’s mother (nursery)
Review of Sun School Skolkovo,
Moscow
We have been going to Sun School Skolkovo since we were two years old. Went this year. My daughter, despite her small age, runs to the garden with pleasure. He gets up early in the morning and says let’s go to the kindergarten. An amazing attitude towards children and very careful, gentle, attentive and not indifferent. Each child has special needs with nutrition, and this is taken into account in the garden. A lot of interesting activities, sports and music. Permanent photo reports and descriptions of the day. Constant feedback. Management is very attentive and kind. Cool garden.

Eric’s dad (nursery)
Review of Sun School Skolkovo,
Moscow
This is our first kindergarten, we went to it at 1. 5 years old. Very good kindergarten. Let’s start with what parents pay attention to: right in front of the garden there is a “patch” for parking, you can safely leave the car and go to see the child off. The room itself is very large. In Moscow gardens, I have never seen such luxury in terms of area. Very pleasant contingent, there are no “extra” people.
A wonderful team: we had a teacher Alexandra, an assistant Alla, an English teacher Aya, director Muza. Everything is always positive, any issues were resolved.
There is video surveillance, for us it is extremely important. And not “recording on demand”, but right online you can watch, even a playground under video surveillance.
