Clearwater – Our Trip to Florida’s Best Beach | Clearwater

Clearwater is the most popular beach town on the West Coast of Florida in the USA. It fully justifies its name, because the water here is really very clean, and the weather is warm and sunny all year round. Clean white sand beaches, developed tourist infrastructure and a large selection of hotels make Clearwater Beach one of the main resort destinations in the United States for those who like to relax on the sea and bask in the sun. We visited Clearwater during our trip to Florida and are ready to share our impressions and photos with you.

    Clearwater

Clearwater is located on the Gulf of Mexico on the west coast of Florida near the cities of Tampa and St. Petersburg. It is well known to tourists for its near-perfect beaches and for its abundance of relatively inexpensive vacation options.

    Basic information

Apart from a wonderful beach holiday on clean white sand beaches (almost like our beloved Maldives), in Clearwater we were interested in watching the sunset from the historic Pier 60 (you can buy a sunset cruise and spend the evening on board sailboat), as well as just walking along the beaches, noticing different details and looking at street performers.

    Clearwater Beach

The main feature of Clearwater Beach is beautiful sea sunsets

Here, unlike the more expensive and pretentious Naples, a very democratic atmosphere reigns, and everyone will find something to their liking and within their means.

Interesting Fact: The town of Clearwater hosts an annual jazz festival.

The city of Clearwater itself, like Miami, consists of the mainland and the resort island with the beaches of Clearwater Beach. Between them is the Pope Strait, in which there are numerous marinas and boats, making Clearwater very attractive for yachtsmen. Nearby are two more barrier islands – Sand Key and Honeymoon Island.

Our recommendation: For official information about the city of Clearwater and recreation on Clearwater Beach, see visitstpeteclearwater.com and visitclearwaterflorida.com before your trip

    Best time to go

day of the year) due to the subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and relatively dry, warm winters. The rainy season runs from June to September and the dry season runs from October to May.

The best time for a holiday on the beaches of Clearwater is November-December and April-May, when the air temperature is most comfortable and there is practically no rain. But in winter it can be cool here, so at this time it is better to go to rest on the beaches of Cancun or the Maldives, where it is warm all year round, and in summer – to Hawaii or the Seychelles.

    How to get there

The easiest way to get to Clearwater is by plane at one of the two nearby international airports:

    1. Tampa Airport (TPA) is located only 19 miles from the beaches in the USA, it ranks first for convenience and ease of movement. Also one of the best airports in the world
    2. St. Petersburg/Clearwater Airport (PIE) is even closer, only 11 miles from the beaches.

Clearwater is also easily accessible by car. We came from Sarasota via Tampa.

    • The best way to get to Tampa is from the north on Interstate 75, and from Orlando, take Interstate 4. one of the most beautiful roads in the world.

    Clearwater Road

    Good to Know:

    • We rented a car to travel around Florida (full-size sedan Toyota Camry) at Miami airport immediately upon arrival, booked on the website Rentalcars.com .
    • Read our article about the features of car rental in Miami.

    Where to stay

There are hotels in Clearwater to suit all tastes and budgets. Of course, to live on the first line near the beach and use sunbeds and umbrellas, you will need to pay much more than to spend the night somewhere a few kilometers from the city center.

However, there are also cool spa resorts from $300 for all-inclusive lovers, and old Florida-style beach motels for $120-150 . Also near Clearwater there are campsites and an RV park.

The best hotels in Clearwater by rating and reviews:

    1. Sandpearl Resort – an expensive 4-star resort with its own beach and the highest rating on Clearwater Beach

    2. 0004 – cozy apartments near the beach for those who value comfort during their holidays

    3. Pier House 60 Marina – the nearest hotel to the pier with spacious rooms at reasonable prices

    4. Hilton Resort & Spa – spa resort on the first Clearwater Beach line near the pier

    5. Sheraton Sand Key Resort – a cool resort with a spacious area, beach, large pool and tennis courts for an unforgettable vacation

    6. Island Cay – Highly rated and well-reviewed budget hotel with a pool on Clearwater Beach

    Clearwater Beach

Clearwater Beach is one of the best beaches in Florida, with beautiful white sand, clear clear water and a gently sloping shore, located on a barrier island, where scenic Route 60 leads from the coast, resting on the pier (as in Los Angeles the famous Route 66 ends near the Santa Monica Pier). Not far from the entrance to the pier is an information center for tourists.

    Clearot-bech

    Photo of the Clearoter beach:

  • Cleast Bike passes on a picturesque embankment of Beach Walk Walk Walk Proments, for which it is pleasantly unveiled between restaurants and shops.

Since Clearwater Beach is very popular and there are no large parking lots, finding a free car spot can be quite easy. We parked at the sidewalk on Coronado Drive, behind Spa Resort Hyatt Regency where the ancient parking meter was first used with quarters.

For children, next to Clearwater Beach, the park has one of the largest playgrounds on the Gulf Coast.

Also very popular among parents with children is the Clearwater Marine Aquarium ( Clearwater Marine Aquarium ), where you can take pictures with dolphins and feed the rays. It is located on the neighboring island of Sea Island (on the map).

    Pier 60

Clearwater’s most notable feature is the long fishing Pier 60, which is as popular here as San Francisco’s Pier 39. It is customary to walk slowly along it, take photos and look at the sea and beaches. The pier is equipped with benches and covered pavilions to protect from rain and sun.

    Pier 60 in Clearwater

At the entrance to Pier 60, vendors of all kinds of knick-knacks stand, aspiring musicians play their music, artists paint portraits for money.

On the pier itself you can buy T-shirts and souvenirs, have a bite to eat in the bistro or watch dolphins through binoculars (we saw them at sunset near the pier).

The far side of Pier 60 is paid, it is intended for fishing with a line. There are a lot of fish, it is different and goes not only to pelicans and seagulls. With us, the fishermen regularly took someone off the hook. Due to the many light sources from the pier, the surface of the water is clearly visible in the dark, and therefore it has become very popular for night fishing.

    Downtown

Downtown Clearwater is an interesting place for lovers of delicious food in restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Unlike Monterey, it was completely rebuilt in accordance with modern ideas about the urban environment, and there is practically nothing left of the historical buildings. As a result, downtown Clearwater has become more convenient for locals and tourists.

The Cleveland Street area across from the marina hosts exhibitions, concerts and theatrical performances.

There are also good hotels like Residence Inn by Marriott , where city life lovers will find it convenient to stay.

    Sand Key

If you don’t like noisy beaches, we advise you to move to the neighboring island of Sand Key, which also has a wonderful sandy beach with beautiful views and a large parking lot in Sand Key Park. It also has all the beach infrastructure for a relaxing family holiday, including beach cabanas and playgrounds.

    Honeymoon Island

Honeymoon Island is a separate large island in the Gulf of Mexico, located about 10 km north of downtown Clearwater. It has Honeymoon Island State Park. It is worth going there if you are interested in relaxing away from civilization, closer to nature.

Honeymoon Island has some nice wild beaches and a tree-shaded trail (stock up on mosquito repellant). And there is also a visitor center and equipped with locker rooms and toilets.

    Photo Hanimun Island:

  • PARECH

Also if you are completely wild, sincere in John Pennekamp Cloral Reef Park, you can go to Caladesi Island. It has one of the few pristine beaches in Florida and is regularly ranked among the best in the world. You can get there only by ferry, which runs from the pier in Honeymoon Island Park.

    Things to do

With near-perfect sunshine, in addition to the beach and the great outdoors, Clearwater offers plenty of other sports and activities to do with the kids.

    • Beach volleyball courts are located on Clearwater Beach itself.
    • Pier 60 is the perfect place to watch the sunset, watch the sea or go fishing.
    • The Beach Walk is a convenient promenade for pedestrians, along which almost all entertainment events and music and arts festivals are held.
    • Caladesi Island Nature Park is great for hiking, biking, kayaking or picnicking.
    • For those who want to swim in the sea during the day or at sunset, boat trips on pirate ships and excursions to see dolphins in the sea are organized.

    Our review

Surprisingly, Clearwater seemed to us almost an ideal beach town that suits literally everyone. There is all the infrastructure, and a lot of entertainment, and for those who like to relax in solitude, there are wild beaches. We especially liked the pier, from which it is easy to watch the dolphins at sunset!

The promenade looked like a boardwalk on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii. It is convenient to walk, but at any moment you can run to the soft sand and relax on the wide beach, where there is enough space for everyone.

And if you still have doubts about which is better to choose for a beach holiday – Clearwater or the nearby best US beach – Siesta Beach, then we can help and recommend:

    • Depending on your preferences, if you need more if you like a calm environment, wide beaches and the sea, then it is better to stay right on Siesta Key or in the resort town of Sarasota next door. And for the most private atmosphere, it is better to go to Marco Island in general.
