Chesterfield: the history of a sofa
The history of the appearance of the Chesterfield sofa is not known for certain, but most sources say that Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield, an English statesman, diplomat and writer, was the first to order such a model for himself. The style of the sofa quickly came into fashion and became widely known under the name “chesterfield”, or simply “chester”.
During the Victorian era, the Chesterfield became the most popular sofa. Hundreds of years later, it is still recognizable and adorns classic and modern interiors. This noble piece of furniture is an expressive dominant and can not only create a comfortable atmosphere in the living room, but also give it a unique style.
“Enjoy life, enjoy every minute of it – after all, pleasures end before life” – Philip Stanhope

Chesterfield is easily recognizable from a thousand. The highlight of the copy is constancy and tradition. This is no longer just a piece of furniture, but a part of history, because its style is more than two hundred years old. Despite its age, it has changed little, retaining its key features:
Diamond tie
In order to evenly distribute the filling (in the old days it was horsehair), the sofa was quilted, closing the stitches with decorative buttons or pins. This technique is called “carriage coupler” or “capitone”. This distinctive feature of the model remains unchanged, as well as its next feature.
Armrests and backrest of the same height
This feature makes this model very ergonomic for people of any height and build, as the armrests provide good and comfortable back support.

Scroll-shaped armrests
Sofa armrests are similar to the decorative elements of the capital of an Ionic column. This “scroll” also crowns the back, which allows you not to put the Chesterfield against the wall. The sofa can also be an island sofa, because the back of the model looks just as impressive.
Photo: Valdichienti Senjor and Valdichienti Kensington sofa with upholstered back and seat. The upholstery of the sofas is made of genuine leather, polyurethane is used as a filler. The elasticity of the back and seats is achieved with the help of elastic straps installed inside.
Modern interpretations
The original classic chester is covered with leather in natural earth tones – the color of clay, sand, evening green. Subsequently, sofas began to be made with fabric upholstery, including color. The shape of the sofa can also be interpreted differently by designers. For example, deliberately “chubby” armrests:
In the photo: Asnaghi Magnum sofa. The frame of the model is made of natural wood. The sofa is perfect for use in both classic and modern interior design.
Or Baxter Chester Moon by Paola Navone: characterized by wide padded armrests without the famous rounded part. The upholstery is still embellished with decorative capitonné stitching. The low rise gives you a feeling of perfect comfort.

Now you can even find Chesterfield corner sofas that are perfect for a spacious living room:

In modern models, the armrests and backrest are given more original shapes. The classic quilted seat base is replaced by smooth cushions, usually removable.
Pictured: Epoque Majestic. The structure is made of wood, inside it is possible to support the seat with elastic straps or coil springs. The sofa is filled with polyurethane foam of various densities and polyester fiber.
Chesterfield looks great in any setting. It is surprisingly good in combination with fur or wood, as well as with other styles of furniture.
Chesterfield sofa can look organic, for example, in a colonial interior. Wooden or wicker furniture, chests, skins, geographical maps, rough carpet, animal figurines, natural textures and other decor will make him an ideal company.

The Chesterfield sofa is the perfect choice for a sober office or traditional style library. Dark leather chester goes well with wood paneling, massive furniture, leather and metal accessories.
In the photo: a strict and pretentious sofa with an elongated back and armrests D513 Francesco Molon Chester. The special shape of this sofa allows the seated person to feel fenced off from prying eyes. The buttons used for the quilted texture of the back and base are embellished with Swarovski crystals.
Chesterfield may emphasize the traditional character of the interior, but more and more often it can be found in modern design.
The color of the sofa significantly affects the emotional perception of the interior. Light colors add elegance to the room, bright colors add expression and passion, dark colors can symbolize conservatism.
In the photo: snow-white Valmori Dublino sofa. The structure frame is made of solid spruce. Suspensions consist of cross elastic straps.
Chester sofa can change its character depending on the interior context. Covered in dark leather and installed in an office or library, it will be perceived as strict and “masculine”. But if you place it in a bright living room and add decorative pillows, it will lose its brutality.
In the photo: elegant Giorgio Collection Daydream two-seater sofa in combination with embossed lizard skin and velvet. Two side panels in Macassar ebony veneer with a satin finish. Chromed legs are made of stainless steel.
The legendary model can change its character also due to the decor. Sophistication of sofas is given by brass or silver finishes, indescribable charm is worn leather, and soft cushions in contrasting colors give homeliness.

In the iB Gallery catalog you can find “gold” and “silver” chesters – such variations will perfectly fit into a modern glamorous interior.
Chester has evolved over time into a chair of a similar shape, which has become no less popular. It can serve as an ideal complement to the legendary model.
Pictured: DV Home Shine shiny quilted sofa and armchair. Wooden legs are varnished or decorated with precious metal foil at the customer’s choice.
Chesterfield leather sofas are a very profitable purchase, because over time, covered with a touch of antiquity, this furniture begins to look even more respectable. Chester is the embodiment of dignity and strength, and his aristocratic name is forever associated with the elegance of high society.
