Before watching Cedar Rapids (dir. Miguel Arret), I read that Anthony Lane wrote about it in The New Yorker. And when I looked, I was surprised. Not for the first time it strikes me that this critic, in his rather lengthy reviews, manages to bypass the main meaning, so to speak, of certain paintings.

The plot of this comedy is simple. Young provincial Tim from Wisconsin is an employee of an insurance company. He is unexpectedly assigned to go to the annual meeting of colleagues from all over the country and hold a presentation of his company there – preferably in such a way that he can outrun everyone and receive an award for his own organization.

This is a huge event for Tim. He is quiet, timid and has never even flown in a plane. Due to shyness, he didn’t make friends, he doesn’t know how to look after girls. He has a lady of the heart, but this is his former school teacher, a woman at a very Balzac age, who simply uses him for sex. And poor Tim thinks it’s true love.

When Tim arrives in the town of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, this “city center” seems to him almost like Las Vegas. He is placed in a room with the majestic black Ronald and – oh horror! – with the same nightmarish Ziegler, a troublemaker and impudent one, against whom Tim was warned at home by his boss.

I sighed heavily. Everything is clear, now I will be shown something like in the idiotic film “The Hangover” and other so-called comedies – how a group of cretins drink, take drugs, defecate, copulate randomly and run around naked. (Especially since the performer of the role of Tim, Ed Helms, starred in this very “Hangover”). And the jokes will be like the one I heard in the trailer for a teen comedy. There, the guy yells indignantly: “It bothers me to watch pornography when they are having sex nearby!” You laugh.

It’s not for nothing that the Cedar Thresholds advertisement reads: “Insurance agents have broken the chain!”

It started right away. With the president of the insurance association, the head of the rally – a respectable elderly gentleman – Tim meets in the locker room of the pool. And both of them are completely naked, so the ceremony of cordial acquaintance takes on a special shade.

And then off we go. Ziegler really turns out to be a stubborn and cynical impudent who plunges Tim into an abyss of temptations. (He is played by the famous and talented John Riley, who simply basks in this role and even squeezes a little). And then there is a certain lady of small size, nicknamed Chanterelle – a married mother of the family, who, having escaped to the rally, is “pulled” to the fullest. With amazement, you recognize in her the rather average actress Anne Heche. A few years ago, she was widely known as the sweetheart of lesbian activist Ellen DeGeneres. Then the cohabitants separated, Heche returned to a modest work in the cinema and, it seems, to the traditional sexual orientation. In her performance of the role of Chanterelle, she does not show any noticeable comedic talent.

There is also a hotel whore in the film, whom the naive Tim takes for a hospitality commissioner. (Actress Aliya Shavkat, whose heroine, despite her high professionalism, retained something childish in her face, was chosen very well). Rampant Sletovites – drunkenness, swimming naked in the pool, scandals, visiting a nightmarish brothel, smoking crack (moreover, naive Tim thinks he smokes “weed”) – played out as expected.

All this is described in Lane’s review, which stops there.

And the film, it turns out, is not so stupid at all and is generally remarkable. But you can’t guess from the review.

Here we have to make some digression.

In the 1930s and 40s, one of America’s most celebrated and revered directors was Frank Capra. He staged comedies, which were a huge success. One of them – not the best, in my opinion, the best – is called It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), and still every year it is always shown on TV at Christmas. For some reason, it did not bother anyone that in Capra’s comedies there was a distinct, as they say, socio-political content. Perhaps because Hollywood was then as madly in love with Franklin Roosevelt as it is with Barack Obama today. Capra’s writers were inspired by the ideas of the New Deal. But for all their leftism and aversion to the rich, they still loved America. Yes, they wanted the same humane and fair order to be established in the country as in the adored Soviet Union. But American democracy did not seem hopeless to them either. It never occurred to them to regard the United States as a fiend and the source of all the misfortunes of the world. They liked the American people with their hard work, kindness and honesty. They even sometimes forgave him for his religiosity. The founding fathers were then considered wise men, not evil slave owners. The ideologically sustained hatred of America came to the brains clouded by drugs and distorted by advanced ideas later, in the terrible 60s.

Kapro’s “ordinary people” performed by James Stewart and Gary Cooper were courageous and highly moral handsome men. Simpleton Smith from the provinces, unexpectedly elected to Congress (“Mr. Smith Goes to Washington”, 1939), faced with the venality of politicians, was horrified, but began to fight them like a lion, in the name of the ideals of American democracy, in which he devoutly believed. Another modest provincial Deeds (“Mr. Deeds Goes to Town”, 1936) suddenly fell into a huge inheritance, and he wanted to help poor people, but this went against the interests of the sharks of capitalism, and a pack of lawyers and slanderous press was lowered on the unfortunate Deeds. A homeless poor man (“Meet John Doe”, 1941) were raised to power, but in fact, behind the scenes, an insidious demagogue, eager to become dictators, was joking.

So serious problems were visible – political corruption, redistribution of wealth, true and false democracy.

And all this was played out cheerfully, witty, touching. The honest, charming heroes of Capra could be relied upon. The powerful of this world could neither corrupt nor break them, and they, having gone through terrible trials, won – always with the help of the masses, that is, a crowd of decent citizens.

In general, although it was thought that comedy was only for entertainment, in fact it drew inspiration from life and inspired certain ideas.

It seems to me that the so-called sexual revolution, closely connected with the spread of atheism, dealt a terrible blow to this genre. She destroyed puritan hypocrisy, but with it such human values ​​as shame and mutual respect. Those who wanted to get on all fours got the full opportunity to do so. And to mix them in the cinema became easier than ever, exposing figuratively and literally. The words “orgasm”, “penis” and “vagina” have become an invaluable source of humor. The screen smelled of feces, vomit, and intestinal gas. The dialogue sparkled with energetic obscenity. What are the witticisms, thoughts and characters. Comedy crawled down the slippery slope, closer to the reptiles.

There are, of course, smart, talented people working in the comedy genre.

One of them directed the film “Idiocracy” five years ago. The film pretends to be science fiction with the transfer of frozen people to the future, but in fact it is a satire. The author argues that since fools multiply faster and more irresistibly than smart ones, then in hundreds of years there will be no smart people in the country. The President of the United States will be black, who won the love of the people in the field of porn stars. And the “Oscar” (for the script!) will go to the film “Ass”, where this naked part of the body will constantly show off on the screen for an hour and a half.

The author of this picture is 49-year-old Mike Judge (father is an anthropologist, mother is a librarian, he himself graduated from the Faculty of Physics, but, fortunately, took up cinema). I haven’t seen his first film yet Office Space which Mike made at the age of 26. This is a comedy about an anarchic revolt of employees of a certain company against stupid, meaningless work led by fools. The film became a cult hit, selling 6 million of its videocassettes. Mike is generally a big specialist in fools. Before feature films, he was engaged in animation, and at MTV ran his series Bevis and Butt-head about two young idiots for five years. Then for twelve years (1997-2009) he directed the cartoon series King of the Hill about the Texas Hill family. Judge succeeded in her most difficult task – to revive the “positive” comedy hero in a new capacity. His Hank Hill is just the manager of Strickland Propane, a company that sells liquefied gas. What could be more prosaic than such work? And in general, he is an ordinary redneck, sipping beer every evening at his usual place by the fence, in the company of three friends – a hairdresser, a fitter and a cockroach control specialist. A strict father, a devout parishioner of the Methodist church. A taciturn, dryish neatist. And, it seems, God forbid, a conservative by conviction, although Judge avoids touching politics.

Hank “breaks” out of the line of modern comedic characters by the fact that we see him at work and find out that he loves not only his wife and son, but his job! He directly prays for this propane and is proud that he is his prophet. It’s funny, very touching and unusual for a comedy. In a country obsessed with the concept of “self-esteem” ( self-esteem ) at any cost, Hank really has something to respect himself for. He honestly, even earnestly works in his place and brings benefits. How many comedians bother doing meaningful work? And yet – Hank is the most that neither is the embodiment of common sense, a sober view of things. This item is becoming very rare these days.

I recently discovered this already, unfortunately, discontinued series (seven Emmy nominations, two awards), and I can’t stop watching reruns every day. What life issues Mike Judge does not raise in the history of the Hills! And two years ago he staged in the cinema a magnificent feature film “Extract” about the business and family misadventures of an honest businessman. What a hilarious depiction of the working class and its trade unions! What a gallery of various idiots, one of whom is very funny played by Ben Affleck, surrounds the poor hero … Who heard about this film, which quickly swept without any advertising on a very small number of screens? I think it’s because of his lack of political correctness.

Where can I find The Goode Family cartoon series that Judge started in 2009 after The Hills was discontinued? This time, he portrayed a family of committed, environmentally obsessed liberals – the kind he says is easy to find in a health food store and who “always feel guilty about being human.” The mother of the family wears a T-shirt that reads “Meat is Murder”. The father not only rides a bike exclusively, but also does not get out of his cycling shorts. They are always asking themselves, “What would Al Gore say?” In the name of fighting racism, they adopted a child from South Africa – but it turned out to be a white Afrikaner! The family named him Ubuntu anyway. Their unfortunate dog, named Che after Guevara, is kept on a vegetarian diet by the Goods. The poor fellow is forced to secretly feed himself as best he can. All the cats in the area have disappeared somewhere…

Hollywood, of course, could not bear such blasphemy. After 13 episodes on ABC, this disgrace was covered up, citing an allegedly poor rating. And there is no rating without advertising, by the way. But the “Hoods” were not advertised, and no one knows about them … Liberals are untouchable for satire.

So – it turns out that the degeneration of feature film comedy occurs in parallel with attempts to revive it in the form of animated “sitcoms”. But there is a faint hope that the cinema will come to its senses.

Cedar Thresholds express this hope. The film is not about how insurance agents got loose. And about how the quiet simpleton Tim turns out to be a direct descendant of the populist heroes of Capra. After all the scandals and riots, he faces the main temptation. To get the coveted reward at the rally, he must, it turns out, simply sell his conscience. Which he does. And then he realizes that he cannot live without a conscience.

These are already serious things, and not just splashing naked in the pool under a fly.

It’s also nice that Tim, like Hank Hill, loves his unromantic and so capitalistic profession. Insurance companies are supposed to be scorned and kicked, and the movie didn’t hesitate to make insurance attractive if it’s done by honest people. At the end, in a charming clownery, Tim and his new friends “agitate” for insurance and its benefits for the people.

Maybe the human content will still return to American comedy films. Of course, let’s not forget that the producer of “Cedar Rapids” is the director and screenwriter Alexander Payne, the author of such brilliant “serious” comedies as Citizen Ruth and Election . Where to get more such producers?
