History
Nili Mansion, Spring 2006
Before the first non-Indigenous settlers arrived in the Green River Valley in the 1850s, it was home to the Muckleshoot people who were temporarily driven out by the Indian Wars later that decade. Several settler families arrived in the 1860s, including Levi Ballard, who founded the estate between the Green and White rivers. [8] Ballard filed a platform to found the city in February 1886, naming it Slaughter after an officer killed during the Indian Wars in 1855. [9] [10]
The slaughter was incorporated on June 13, 1891, but its name was changed two years later to Auburn on February 21, 1893 by a decision of the state legislature. The new residents did not like this name and its connection with the word “slaughterhouse”, especially after the city hotel was named Slaughterhouse. [9] [10] The name Auburn was chosen in honor of Auburn, New York, for the area’s general reliance on hop farming. [11]
The White and Green Rivers have been an important part of Auburn’s history and culture since the area was settled and several places in the city were named after one of the two rivers. Frequent flooding from the rivers caused many problems for the people living in the community, one result of which was the creation of the Mountain View Cemetery on one of the hills overlooking the valley. [12] It was not until the completion of the Mud Mountain Dam and the Howard A. Hanson Dam along the White River and Green River, respectively, that the flooding stopped and allowed the city to grow without the aforementioned impediment to growth.
In 1917, the city, in response to the growth of the Japanese community, donated part of the land to the White River Buddhist Church Pioneer Cemetery. A little over a decade later, Reverend Giryo Takemura, a church minister at the time, and his future son-in-law Chiyokichi Natsuhara raised money to replace the old wooden sticks and columns used as tombstones in the Cemetery with stronger concrete markers. [13] During the interwar period, several Japanese-American baseball teams from the area competed in the courier league, with the White River All-Stars having a particularly strong success, winning four tournaments on July 4th. [14] [15] In 1930, the current tenants built a Japanese bathhouse outside the Neely mansion. [16]
At the start of World War II, Auburn’s Japanese-American community began to be viewed with unwarranted distrust by many white Auburn residents. This, combined with nationwide xenophobia directed at the Japanese, resulted in the city’s Japanese-American population being moved to internment camps. After the war, of the approximately 300 Japanese families living in the Auburn, only about twenty-five returned. [13]
In 2008, Auburn annexed the West Hill and Lee Hill areas of unincorporated King County, adding 15,000 residents and increasing its land area by 26 percent. [17] [18]

Geography
Auburn is crossed by two rivers: the White River and especially the Green River.
History
The town was originally called Slaughter, after Lieutenant William Slaughter, who died in a gunfight in 1856, but the locals find the name somewhat embarrassing: Slaughter in translated from English means “massacre”. In 1893, the city was renamed Auburn, after the New York state city of the same name, in part because the two cities shared their hop crops.

Washington DC, the capital of the United States, has many interesting places and things to do. Washington DC is a center of culture and arts and is made up of many unique neighborhoods. This legendary city has something really interesting for everyone! Prices here are higher than the national average, but quite normal for the capital.
The median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Washington DC is just under $2,000 per month, for a 3-bedroom apartment, $2,600 per month. Washington DC is national monuments and political arena, so life in this city will always be exciting!
Many people come to the capital for internships or short-term business trips, so the competition for furnished apartments in Washington is very high. As a result, rents for furnished apartments are on average 10% higher than for unfurnished apartments. The difference is even greater, even utilities are included in the rent. However, if you are planning to come to Washington for work, it is better for you to spend your time on work, rather than looking for furniture and other essentials.
If you have found a furnished apartment that you like, we advise you to act quickly and professionally. And another tip: think in advance about how you can convince the landlord that you deserve an apartment more than other applicants.
If you’re moving to Washington for study or an internship, you’ll find the student housing market in Washington DC very attractive. If you prefer to live off campus, you’ll be pleased to find that Washington has heavily student-centered neighborhoods. Neighborhoods such as Dupont Circle, Georgetown and the U Street Corridor are popular with students not only for their inspiring atmosphere, but also for their excellent hiking and vibrant nightlife. The same can be said about the Navy Yard area with many new buildings and Penn Quarter, located in the city center.
During the summer holidays, many interns and political interests flock to Washington in search of seasonal work and experience. All of these interns need housing, and unfortunately homeowners know this very well. Short-term rentals are much more expensive and highly competitive. The cheapest option is to live in a university dormitory. During the summer, rooms are always rented out on campuses, but you should act decisively: all rooms are booked very quickly.
