The islet of Meganissi with the famous cave of Papanikolis is located near the Greek island of Lefkada and is one of the few small islands permanently inhabited by people. Zakynthos

The city of Zakynthos was also completely destroyed by the 1953 earthquake, but tastefully restored in a Venetian spirit. Behind the beautiful promenade you will find an attractive shopping street. From the latest discoveries of archaeologists of the IA RAS

The Kerch Strait has long been one of the main transit centers of the Northern Black Sea region: a number of Greek colonies arose on its shores, there is a crossing between the European and Asian Bosporus, there is a sea trade route from the Mediterranean to Meotida. The strait retained its strategic importance in the Middle Ages, modern and modern times, periodically becoming the scene of naval battles. Undoubtedly, this water area keeps a lot of evidence of the past, therefore, at the design stage of the Taman-Krym bridge, the expedition of the IA RAS conducted large-scale archaeological reconnaissance in the Kerch Strait, and in 2015-2016. underwater surveys of more than 8000 magnetic and acoustic anomalies were carried out along the bridge route. The most interesting archaeological object turned out to be a large accumulation of ancient ceramics in shallow water between Ak-Burun Cape and the Mine Pier of the Kerch Fortress, known since 1990s, but not previously certified and not registered with the state.

As a result of visual inspection and pitting, the accumulation area was determined as 50 thousand square meters. m, and the thickness of the layer with finds is mainly ceramics of the 4th-2nd centuries. BC. – up to 0.7 m. According to one of the versions of the origin of the accumulation, in ancient times there was an anchorage here, where goods were reloaded onto boats, and ceramic containers broken during transportation were thrown into the sea. The accumulation is certified under the name “Ak-Burun Bay”, within its boundaries the construction of 28 pillars of technological, automobile and railway bridges is planned. nine0003

In 2015, large-scale underwater excavations began on the bottom sections marked for the bridge abutments. Clearing of bottom sediments was carried out in 1×1 m squares to a meter depth, the scanned silt was removed from the excavations by hydraulic ejectors. To fix the stratigraphy and location of the finds, the divers used full-face masks with duplex voice communication. During the clearing of some excavations, it turned out that antique ceramics were mixed with items produced in the 1940s-1970s. This proves that the accumulation was not deposited at Cape Ak-Burun in a natural way, but was formed as a result of the dumping of bottom sediments removed during dredging of another section of the Kerch Bay. nine0003

Nevertheless, this object remains of great scientific importance, because is a source of data on the arrival of pottery in the Bosporus, demonstrating a wide range of archaeologically intact forms and rare stamps of Panticapaeum imports of the 5th century BC. BC. – XIII century. AD In the course of underwater archaeological work in 2015, almost 20,000 finds were recovered and processed – container, kitchen, table and building ceramics, covers, lamps and lutherium, bone products. Up to 70% of the ceramic complex is amphorae, 80% of them date back to the 4th-3rd centuries. BC. and come from the Aegean Sea region, 20% – from the South Pontic centers and Colchis, amphoras of local production are rare. Among tableware, Pontic, Attic and Asia Minor dishes of the 4th-2nd centuries predominate. BC, on some vessels there are graffito in the form of anchors – probably markings belonging to the ship’s crew. Kitchen ceramics stands out with a variety of pots and lids. Among the finds there are no categories typical for local coastal monuments – molded ceramics, sinkers, terracotta, incense burners, metal products, which is explained by the formation of this complex at the city piers or at the coastal anchorage. An analysis of the finds allows us to conclude that they were originally deposited near the Genoese pier, built in the 14th century.
