What is early childhood intervention (FIT)?

Early intervention services include a range of targeted services to help young children who are not reaching developmental milestones or have special developmental needs. FIT provides free early intervention services for infants and toddlers from birth to 3 years of age who are developmentally delayed or may be at risk of developmental delay. A variety of professionals work with young children and their families to improve their chances of success in school and in life.

Anyone who is concerned about a child’s development can refer the child to FIT. This includes parents, guardians, adoptive parents and family members, pediatricians, other doctors, social workers, nurses, child caregivers, or others who know the child.

Your child may receive services from either the NMFIT program or from an outpatient therapy provider.

  • List of FIT Providers: A list of early intervention agencies in the state that have contracted with the NM Family Infant Toddler Program.

What if the child is 3 years old or older and still needs services?

If a child is 3 years old or older and is suspected of having a disability or developmental delay, they can be referred to the Child Finder Program. Child Find primarily assesses students aged 2 ½ to 5; however, students may be assessed to determine if they are eligible for special education and related services at any age.

Children may be referred by parents, medical staff, social workers, school workers or others with whom they have direct contact. School districts are responsible for evaluating any student who lives in their district and is suspected of having a disability, whether or not they attend a school program in their district.

Note: Your child may receive services from either the NMFIT program or an outpatient care provider.

What other infant and young child therapy services might be available?

Some infants and young children may benefit from special physical, occupational, and speech therapy services provided in a clinic setting and sometimes in your home. These services may be referred to as outpatient or home health services PT, OT, ST.

These therapeutic services include an appointment with a licensed therapist to help your child or young child learn necessary skills that may be difficult for them. You will also be taught activities or exercises to do with your child at home to support their progress. Your doctor or other health care provider may recommend that your child or child receive one or more of these treatments on a regular basis over a period of time.

Most children on Medicaid or Centennial can get these services for free. The cost for those with and without other insurance varies depending on the insurance plan and where the services are received. The list of resources below provides information about agencies or institutions that provide therapy and treatment evaluation services specifically for infants and young children.

Note: Your child may receive services from either the NMFIT program or an outpatient care provider.

What is home visiting for new and future families and how does it help?

Home visiting programs provide services with trained professionals to families who are expecting or have children who have not enrolled in kindergarten. Each program follows a specific curriculum model. Home visiting programs:

  • Help parents and families have healthier pregnancies
  • Help parents understand their role as their child’s most important teacher
  • Visit families at their home or other location at the request and convenience of the family.
  • Connect families to various resources in the community

Most programs serve prospective parents until early childhood. Entry requirements vary from one program to another. Most programs provide services to all families, including teen parents, grandparents raising an infant, adoptive parents, or family/court-ordered employment. Some programs target new parents, low-income families, or families from certain geographic areas. Some programs require registration during pregnancy.

Main — Kindergarten No. 39 Primorsky district St. Petersburg

As a sign of the highest social significance of the teaching profession, 2023 – the year of the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of the founders of Russian pedagogy Konstantin Dmitrievich Ushinsky – will be dedicated in our country to teachers and mentors. There will be a year of the teacher, a year of the teacher. What a modern school should be like: its infrastructure, equipment, level of education, organization of out-of-school education, circles, sports sections – all this is important. Here, not only the work of the teacher is important, but also the participation of the students themselves and, of course, the parents. Because only common causes can create a school in which it is interesting to study, which is attractive for its capabilities in revealing the talent of children, in preparing them for adulthood.

— President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin

Oh Lord, help us to understand the secret of childhood so that we can know the child, love and serve him in accordance with the law of Your justice and follow Your will!

— Maria Montessori (Italian physician and educator, 1870-1952)

Do not think that you bring up a child only when you talk to him, or teach him, or order him. You are nurturing him at every moment of your life. The child sees or feels the slightest changes in tone, all turns of your thought reach him in invisible ways, you do not notice them.

– A. S. Makarenko (Soviet teacher, 1888-1939)
