Welcome to The Children’s Courtyard in Grand Prairie, TX! My name is Sara and I am the campus director. I bring more than 25 years of experience as a teacher and manager to my position. I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you how our Infant Care, Toddler, Preschool, Pre-K and School-Age programs provide children with a unique learning environment.

We have an outstanding group of teachers! More than half of them have been with us for two years or more and many of them have been here for 10 years or more. They receive quarterly training sessions on age-specific children’s topics, as well as an all-day staff development training day twice each year.

Our building houses multiple classrooms for each age group along with two indoor play areas. We have a separate School-Age building with facilities to offer children a variety of recreational and educational activities. Since we opened in 1996, we have provided a safe, warm and welcoming learning environment for children.

In the modern world there is a very acute problem of intolerance of people towards each other. Because of the rejection of a foreign culture, thoughts, way of life, people condemn, quarrel, fight, trying to impose their “correct” point of view and way of life.

And from all this very serious questions arise: “What needs to be done so that people stop judging those who are fundamentally different from them? How can people be forced to live in peace and harmony? They try to answer these difficult questions with the help of the interpretation of the concept of tolerance. Be patient and all problems will be solved. But is it really so?

What is tolerance? This concept is interpreted differently in different countries, among different peoples.

Tolerance (from Latin tolerantia – patience) “…means respect, acceptance and correct understanding of the rich diversity of cultures of our world, our forms of self-expression and ways of manifestation of human individuality [1].

But in Russian, the word tolerance is often chosen as a synonym for patience or indifference with a contemptuous connotation, in the sense of humility and non-resistance to what is happening. But tolerance is not a concession or indulgence to social injustice and a rejection of one’s views and beliefs, but, first of all, an active attitude towards what is happening around you. Education of tolerance should be from two sides. And the one to whom this feeling should be shown and the one who should. It must, because all the negative feelings that a person of a different nationality, faith, worldview, appearance evokes in us, we must learn to suppress in ourselves and perceive not as an enemy and an alien invasion, but as a diversity of the world that has the right to exist.

Tolerance is a quality that characterizes the attitude towards another person as an equally worthy person and is expressed in the conscious suppression of a feeling of rejection caused by everything that marks something else in another (appearance, manner of speech, tastes, lifestyle, beliefs, etc.). Tolerance implies a disposition for understanding and dialogue with another, recognition and respect for his right to be different [2].

The education of the right tolerance is very much in demand these days. It is adults who first of all should show by their example how to do it right. Frédéric Mayor, Director General of UNESCO, calls for the development of tolerance in all states at all levels of education: “Living with diversity is one of the sources of serious problems for the societies in which our children grow up. In a world where the interpenetration of different cultures is on the rise, teaching the values ​​and skills of “social life” has become a primary task of education. Therefore, I appeal to the heads of state and government of the world, ministers and officials responsible for education at all levels, to the measures of cities and towns, villages and towns, to all teachers, religious communities, journalists and parents: educate and teach our children and youth be open, treat other peoples, their history and culture with understanding, teach them the basics of human coexistence, teach them how important it is to renounce violence and look for peaceful ways to resolve disputes and conflicts” [3, p.10].

Russia is a multinational country, which implies a great variety of religions and cultures, which should get along with each other in peace and harmony. But it doesn’t always work out. But tolerance does not end with the adoption of another culture, religion or people, it is much more extensive. And often people condemning a person for appearance or way of thinking become intolerant. Tolerance is very diverse. And the most complete typology is presented by M. Ts. Matskovsky.

The education system has a huge potential for educational influence on the child, aimed at the formation of tolerance. But in real pedagogical practice, progress in this direction is often difficult. A teenager can often observe that the deed is at odds with the words and most often demonstrates intolerance towards others. And it is important to catch the moment when a teenager has a lot of questions and doubts. A clear division into black and white, into friend and foe begins, aggression is manifested, unwillingness to accept oneself and others. And at this moment it is necessary and important to explain the nuances of the world around him, to help him understand the exciting issues. Parents, unfortunately, cannot always help the child in this, and then the responsibility falls on the school and teachers, who should approach this issue with all responsibility [4].

It is at school that intolerance towards others most often begins to manifest itself. And if adults ignore these manifestations, personalities will continue to form who will not learn to accept others with their characteristics.

Promoting a culture of non-violence with the help of humane pedagogy can become real if it is constantly demonstrated in everyday life, and not just high-flown words and rare manifestations.

At school, the most important part of the educational process is the lesson. And the lesson of literature is one of the most important academic disciplines that form and educate morality. Literature is a philosophy of life, on the examples of whose heroes it teaches to live, solve problems, think, analyze.

Academician D.S. Likhachev said: “Respect the thoughts and feelings of your brothers” [6, p.38]. And if we are talking about the education of tolerance, then these words are the best suited to teach to be tolerant of others.

The education of tolerance is very closely connected with the education of morality. A tolerant person is a highly moral person. The study of literature always leads to the identification of moral problems and contradictions. But moral education is impossible without psychological culture, without empathy for the inner world of a literary hero. Parsing the images in the lessons, the student must reveal the psychological image of the character and thereby get closer to his problems, understand them and try to try them on himself, thereby letting him into his inner world. Often immersion in the inner world of a character is immersion in oneself. In classical literature, one can often find answers to exciting questions. And to the question “Why do we need tolerance, tolerance?” Literature can also provide an answer.

And already from the 5th grade we meet works that raise this issue. Perhaps indirectly, not directly, but the theme of tolerance is already found in L. N. Tolstoy’s story “Prisoner of the Caucasus”. And it is the child, the girl Dina, who demonstrates interest and tolerance for the captive. In her mind there is still no division into friends and foes, into nationalities and religions. She feels a good person and opens up to him, trying to help. Of course, the main question in the lesson is about patriotism, loyalty, friendship, betrayal. But Zhilin’s behavior can also be called tolerant. He does not hate his captors for their nationality, he does not try to harm anyone, although the opportunity was to escape and take revenge through the child. His only goal is to get out and stay alive. There is a difficult time in the story, when there is a conflict over territories and everyone watches his own interest. And from the Tatar side, we also do not see hatred for the captive. They even show respect and admiration for his human qualities. Their goal is to get money for it. In this work, you can focus on interethnic human relations. Even in a state of military conflict, a person must remain a person, which Zhilin demonstrates to us, whether it is a relationship with the Tatars or with his comrade.

The program also includes works by A. Platonov both for compulsory reading and for self-study. Platonov’s work allows you to touch the hero’s world with a “bare heart”. It’s almost impossible to learn this on purpose. But Platonov does not even try to teach, he simply believes in humanity, in creativity, in the victory of the heart over the mind. Both the weak, sick Yushka, suffering from human cruelty, but convinced of the need to live, and the unknown flower from the fairy tale of the same name, were, somehow humanly stubbornly fighting for their existence, carry the great power of love for life. These heroes are truly human, they are “one breath, a single, warm living being” (Platonov). They are strong in their desire to simply live and deserve the deepest respect and sincere love. The main task is to help children understand that “it hurts one, it hurts everyone, one dies, everyone dies” (A. Platonov). Here it is appropriate to recall the ethical principle of the Russian philosopher N. F. Fedorov: “One must live not for oneself and not for others, but with everyone and for everyone.”

Perfectly demonstrates the quality of social tolerance in the story of V. G. Korolenko “In Bad Society”. Vasya is a boy from a wealthy family, but without the love and care of his father, meets children from the lower strata of society. At first, he is curious about what kind of people they are and how they live, and then he becomes a really good friend to them. And Vasya never has the thought that they are the dregs of society and unworthy of life. Again, it is through the child that the author shows that the social position is completely unimportant, it does not affect anything. The fairy tale “The Ugly Duckling” reflects the modern trend of bodypotivism. Accept and love yourself the way you are. No one has the right to judge you for your appearance. How often it is the appearance, some of its features that become the reason for the persecution of a teenager. And the children who survived this carry all these complexes and failures into adulthood, which greatly interfere with living a happy life. And the people who have not learned to accept other people with their differences and characteristics are to blame for this.

A. Pristavkin’s poignant story “A Golden Cloud Spent the Night” shows with terrible examples what happens when there is no tolerance and acceptance of other peoples and nationalities in the world. And how often it is children who suffer from rash decisions of adults. And in this work, between the lines, the thought constantly flashes about how important it is for people to live in peace, adopt a different nationality, and not try to destroy each other.

The actual work at all times by V.K. Zheleznikov “Scarecrow” is always used in the classroom as an example of how not to deal with people. If suddenly bullying begins in the team, then it is this story that helps to understand the thoughts and feelings of a person who finds himself in such a situation. Living with the heroine the feelings and emotions that she experiences during bullying, the child may realize that it is wrong to be in the place of the heroine or those who mock her. It shouldn’t be like that. It is empathy that helps to bring to the right thoughts and reasoning. Heroes of fiction very often help to look at the situation from the other side, see their mistakes and try to correct them.

And the author does not condemn the heroine for her choice, and even tells the readers that no one has the right to condemn her. This is a person of high morality and morality, even despite the hard life, she remained kind, honest and merciful. And it is these qualities that help her save Rodion Raskolnikov from moral decay.

And against the backdrop of everything that is happening in the modern world, the study of examples of the manifestation of tolerance in literature is very important. It is literature that makes it possible to gain experience without making one’s own mistakes, but by learning from the mistakes and actions of the heroes of literary works.

The education of tolerance is an important part of the process of becoming a child’s personality, his morality. And in modern conditions, the school is faced with the task of preparing the child for life in a multicultural, multinational country. To teach with respect to people who differ in some way, do not fit into the usual model of the child’s world. Literature is a great tool that can help with this, because it contains a huge potential for cultivating respect, interest, kindness for the phenomena of the world, for people who differ from “generally accepted” norms.
