Our Mission

Our mission is to create a safe space for children to be themselves, build community, and learn to be leaders. We accomplish this by offering quality enrichment and development opportunities for children, delivering peace of mind for parents, and empowering the missions of schools.

Our Legacy

The Y has been a childcare leader in our communities for generations. As a vital partner in our region, YMCA Child Care programs nurture a fun, collaborative, and safe environment for children to express themselves and enable parents to navigate busy schedules and workdays with peace of mind.

Our Approach

We offer a variety of programs that aim to empower children to learn and be champions of their own education. Through programs such as our Before and After School Care, Early Learning, and Summer Day Camps and Break Camps, the Y continues a longstanding tradition of youth development to strengthen communities by empowering young people. The Y is dedicated to fulfilling our learners’ social, emotional, and educational needs. We believe enrichment forms with the knowledge that not every systematic approach to education can apply to every learner. That is why we meet students, families, educators, districts, and administrators where they are to support and uplift our mutual goals and missions.

Our Team

All YMCA Child Care staff are certified childcare professionals who understand our local communities and the children that make up our programs. The Child Care staff comprehends children’s cognitive, physical, and social development. We offer the support parents and families need, and the significance of maintaining a safe, clean, and fun environment for children to learn and succeed.

Caring Curriculum

The YMCA believes quality enrichment starts with meeting individual students where they are. The SCALED Learning™ curriculum offers innovative elements such as STEM, literacy, arts, Career-Connected Learning, and more. Kids in our programs benefit from a hands-on learning experience that is fun, engaging, and attentive to their needs.

Scholarships

The YMCA understands that quality childcare can be expensive and sometimes seem inaccessible to families who genuinely need it. Scholarships are available for families that qualify for financial support.

Philosophy

Research shows that children who spend time in nature are better at focusing, think more clearly, and are able to deal with stress more effectively.

At Nature Education Preschool, our unique program combines the best of hands-on outdoor and nature learning with traditional academic concepts. Read more in the Curriculum section below. What is a nature preschool? Click here for a detailed explanation.

Class size
Each section has a maximum of 12 children, with two teachers per class.

Statement of Impartiality
At Nature Education Preschool, we strive to create a community that feels welcoming, accepting, and safe for everyone. Our goal is to make our classroom reflect Tacoma’s diverse community and create an environment where every voice and story is valued. We define diversity as people who are unique in race, ethnicity, income level, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, family structure, abilities, and learning styles. By noting our differences and exploring our similarities, our young learners create a foundation for curiosity and connection, acceptance and appreciation. We also focus on social-emotional learning, which leads to empathy and understanding, as well as protecting ourselves and others. NIN staff are committed to continuing their own education and work in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion, and we reaffirm the goals of Education Against Bias:

  1. Each child will demonstrate self-awareness, confidence, family pride and a positive social identity.
  2. Every child will express comfort and joy with human diversity; the exact language of human differences; and deep, caring human connections.
  3. Each child will increasingly recognize injustice, have a language to describe injustice, and understand that injustice hurts.
  4. Each child will demonstrate the empowerment and skills to act with others and alone against prejudice and/or discriminatory practices.

Academic plan

As a nature-based preschool, we do not follow a set curriculum. We are discovery-based and focused on children. However, there are many topics that we focus on throughout the year on a tentative schedule or as children’s interests and our discoveries give us opportunities.

Our new child-inspired curriculum often follows the changing seasons and exciting events that take place in and around our building and grounds, reflects our currently enrolled families, and is enhanced by our ever-changing climate.

Because our curriculum is based on learning/learning, attendance is key to making the most of our unique program.

We do not recommend this program for those who will take a simpler approach to schooling.

With the exception of sickness and holidays that cannot be scheduled during scheduled breaks, it is best for students to be here for all classes throughout the school year.

While traditional academic skills and abilities are part of our school, they are definitely not in the spotlight. Please read about our learning objective to get an idea of what we regularly work on with our students.

Our goal is to meet each individual child where they are and help them develop their skills.

Our philosophy is that preschoolers learn and grow through play, discovery and learning how to be part of a community. When their brains are ready, they will naturally gravitate toward more academic pursuits. We will be ready for them with more possibilities.

Looking at the actual research, it is clear that more structured scholars need to be in elementary school and beyond. That’s when the child’s brain is ready for it! Again, we provide opportunities for traditional academic pursuits and elements are woven throughout each school day, but we do not focus on learning or expect our “graduates” to achieve specific academic goals before they leave. If this is important to you, we strongly encourage you to find another preschool with a different philosophy than ours.

An excerpt from the article linked below: “ Sending teachers to preschools to “better prepare” children to deal with the already overly academic experience in kindergarten is a waste of time and is “wrong parenting” since Dr. David Elkind refers to him in Improper parenting – preschoolers at risk can cause “damage to a child’s self-esteem, loss of a positive attitude, a child needs for learning, blocking “.
