The process of selecting child care or a school can be quite daunting and time consuming. At First Step School in San Marcos, TX we believe it doesn’t have to be. After speaking with our dedicated faculty members the choice will be clear in regards to the welfare and future development of your child.  

The overall goal of the program is enhancement of the child’s emotional, social and cognitive development. Children’s learning experiences are planned to occur through play activities and planned educational activities. Children and teachers select activities for participation from a variety of available planned experiences, some of which are child initiated and some of which are teacher initiated. The First Step Center program is based on a cognitive philosophy. Leave your child’s education in the best possible hands. We provide a well-balanced curriculum and atmosphere and look forward to speaking with you about your child’s education. We conduct tours of the school between the hours of 2:00 and 4:30 pm by appointment only. The tours take about 15-20 minutes. In the Kindergarten Prep class, we read The Gingerbread Boy every year. The gingerbread run away and we must find them in the school. Once we find them, we get to decorate and eat them!

SAN ANTONIO COURT MOVES TO NEW BUILDING

For decades, the San Antonio federal courthouse was on East Cesar E. Chavez Blvd, in a former theater that opened for the HemisFair in 1968. But by Christmas this building will be empty.

Judges, staff members, federal marshals and several federal agencies will move to a new courthouse in mid-December in a fast-growing area of ​​downtown west. The building has 3 floors, an area of ​​235 thousand square meters. ft. is located on the corner of West Nueva and South Santa Rosa Streets, where the former police department was once located, next to San Pedro Creek and across the street from the new city headquarters of the Office of Public Safety. The new courthouse, which has been sought for over 15 years, has 8 courtrooms and 13 judges’ offices. It will also house the offices of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, federal defenders, bailiffs, clerks, federal pre-trial services, and the U.S. General Services Administration.

US District Judge Xavier Rodriguez, who led the judiciary’s efforts to build and prepare the new courthouse, said “we were ahead of schedule and on budget.” Of the $144.5 million approved, $121 million was used for design, construction and related expenses.

SERVICE JOBS

A special time of the year has begun – the most beautiful and busiest. The holiday season has a lot to offer, especially after we have been deprived of holidays for a long time. John Munoz, manager of Original Mexican Restaurant in the River Walk area, stated that while guests can expect great service, they also need to understand that there are staff issues. Restaurant workers do everything in their power, but there are not enough dishwashers, waiters, cleaners. Usually, during the high season, Munoz invites 14 chefs. There are only 7 today.

Thanksgiving has been a very busy time for Gus’ World Famous Fried Chicken. Manager Mark Topham said that a lot of people came to pick up their orders. But in December, people “eat even more” and the restaurant announces open vacancies.

The holiday season is in full swing at Alamo Plaza. Garvin O’Neill, CEO of The Menger Hotel, said the hotel is 99% back to full service. With the return of business, the vacancies have also returned – for today, 15 jobs need to be filled. The hotel was 60% full for Thanksgiving, a big improvement from last year. FRAUD SCHEMES THRESHOLD

The caller identified himself as Jordan Blake of the US Enforcement Service. He informed B. Singh, owner of a California trucking company, that his Social Security number was being used by a man who had committed a series of crimes in Texas. He stated that law enforcement would come after Singh if he did not take certain steps.

Singh told real law enforcement officials that, following instructions, he sent checks for $60,000 to Tiburcho Basaldua in San Antonio “to create a new social security number.” Basaldua was a cog in a nationwide scam using “money mules” – people who transfer or move illegally obtained money and increase the distance between perpetrators and victims, making money transfers difficult to trace.

Secret Service agents in San Antonio opened a case in 2020 after withdrawing $185,000 from Bazaldua’s account, allegedly sent by a relative. A year later, after the discovery of additional amounts, the agents have yet to file federal charges. But Bazaldua, 67, and his Facebook friend Diana Williams, 52, also a San Antonio resident, were already indicted in New Mexico in November 2021. They swindled the elderly woman out of $240,000, claiming that the money would fix problems that included “the use of her data by the Colombian cartels” and “the discovery of a blood-stained car on the border with Mexico, rented in her name.” The victim was followed by aggressive calls for several weeks. The fear factor took over and the woman agreed to pay. Ultimately, local authorities were able to trace her money, with the exception of $20,000, and return it.

There are many types of fraud. Criminals even spoof phone numbers to make them look like real federal phone numbers. In November, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations in San Antonio warned that impostors posing as HSI agents were contacting people claiming problems with their passport. The scammers claim that the passport is involved in the crime and threaten arrest if the money is not paid. They managed to spoof the HSI phone number in San Antonio 210-979-4500.

THE NEW “HOLLYWOOD TEXAS”?

Will San Marcos be the next “Hollywood of Texas”? Quite possible. The city council approved the final version of the resolution, which will establish a zone for the development of media production within the city and its extraterritorial jurisdiction. With the approval of the film commission, San Marcos will join Fort Worth and Austin – the only cities in the state with such a status.

This allows exemption from sales tax and use for the construction, maintenance and improvement of film and television production facilities and related businesses for up to two years. According to the regulation, such production facilities may include animation and computer imaging studios, post-production and final editing, soundstages, video game development studios, and production office space. Basically, it’s about tax breaks for film and television companies that want to film in San Marcos.

The Council of 6 members approved the resolution in the first and second readings in November. It is now submitted to the Texas Film Commission, a governing body that operates under the Media Production Development Act approved by the Texas Legislature in 2009. The Texas Media Development Zone Act encourages film production in the state. There are over 250 production companies based in Texas, according to the Texas Film Commission.
