” Florida Evaluates Aftermath of Hurricane Ian
Image copyright Reuters
One of the worst hurricanes to hit the US in recent years, Ian left 2.7 million homes without power in Florida. The hurricane is forecast to move north into Georgia and South Carolina on Friday.
Shortly before this, “Ian” walked through Cuba, leaving 11 million people without electricity.
A hurricane made landfall in Florida around 3:10 pm local time on Wednesday, with winds up to 240 km/h along the coast. This morning, a significant part of the coast of southwestern Florida remained without power, and some cities in the state were completely flooded.
After the first shock wave, the wind speed dropped by half, to 120 km/h. Ian has now lost hurricane status and is classified as a tropical storm with winds only occasionally exceeding 100 km/h.

Footage broadcast by major US television channels shows rising waters overflowing coastal homes, flooding roads and washing away cars.
Some areas of the city of Fort Myers, where more than 80 thousand people live, look like lakes. About 2.5 million people living in Florida’s coastal counties have received a mandatory evacuation order, and several more are offering to evacuate voluntarily.
Sheriff Carmine Marceno of Lee County, Florida, which includes the city of Fort Myers, told ABC that although he doesn’t have any confirmed figures yet, he’s pretty sure the death toll is in the hundreds.
“Thousands of people are waiting for rescue,” the sheriff added.

On Thursday, people were advised not to come out of hiding until noon. Gov. Ron DeSantis said Ian caused the worst flooding southwest Florida has ever experienced and announced that 7,000 US National Guard troops are ready to lead rescue efforts in flood zones.
According to DeSantis, only two deaths are known for certain, but the authorities are not even sure that these people died as a result of the storm.
The “hundreds of dead” Lee County Sheriff is talking about is based on calls he received from people in the flooded areas. Whether the callers are alive and in what condition they are is still unknown.
“Fort Myers and Lee County are really flooded and devastated,” confirmed Ron DeSantis.
“It’s going to be a disaster”
Hurricane Ian’s damage will be catastrophic, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency is preparing for potentially thousands of people to be relocated from affected areas.
“We can’t quantify yet, but I can tell you it’s going to be a disaster,” agency director Dina Criswell told CNN.
Strong winds, rain and storm surges are still expected in Florida, the US National Hurricane Center said. Up to 76 centimeters of rain could fall in the state, causing river levels to rise by 1.5 to 2.4 meters and lead to severe flooding.
“This is a storm we’ll be talking about for many years to come. This is a historic event,” said National Weather Service director Ken Graham.

Tampa and Orlando airports have stopped all commercial flights and cruise lines have delayed or canceled flights.
As Ian continues to head north, Jacksonville International Airport in northeast Florida has also canceled all flights scheduled for Thursday.
The storm is expected to hit Georgia and South Carolina on Friday.
US President Joe Biden has already established dedicated federal disaster relief funds for nine Florida counties. The White House added that after assessing the damage, their number could increase.
Federal money will be used to build temporary housing, home repairs, loans to buy essentials, and to clear rubble.
Cuba began to recover after “Ian”
Cuba was the first area hit by the hurricane, hitting the country’s west coast on Tuesday before moving on to Florida.
Due to the impact of the Ian, the largest thermal power plant in the country, Antonio Giteras, was out of order. It was not possible to promptly turn it on, and the island turned out to be completely de-energized: 11 million people were left without electricity. At least three people have died.
- Hurricane Ian hit Florida. Prior to that, he completely “turned off” the power supply in Cuba
- Hurricane Eunice killed 16 people in Europe
- Powerful hurricanes and downpours hit Europe, children among the dead
The author of the photo, Getty Images gradually restore electricity in the eastern regions, but warned that in the west of the island this process will be more difficult. By Thursday morning, Cuba had restored electricity to some areas of the capital Havana, but many places still remain without electricity.

The most famous sinking incident probably happened in Winter Park at 1981, and this city, located north of downtown Orlando, was called the “Failure in Winter Park. ”
The city limits of Orlando consist of 115 boroughs with several unincorporated areas. The city’s borders are like a chessboard, with the city’s borders surrounding the pouches of Orange County. Another folklore says that the town was named after a wealthy plantation owner named Orlando J. Rees who lived in the area. Another theory also indicates that the city was named after the protagonist Orlando from Shakespeare’s play As You Like It. Orange County was formerly known as Mosquito County and it was changed in 1845.
In 1857, Orlando, as a new city, was divided into four streets surrounding the courthouse square. The new village survived the hard times of the Union blockade.
