Read Meet America! online completely📖 — Vladimir Bessmertny — MyBook.
“I have traveled all over Europe and almost all the states of North America. Before America, Europe seemed to me like an old estate…”
(Sergey Yesenin, 1923)
“America is not a paradise. But if this is hell, then the best in the world.
(Sergey DOVLATOV)
About the author
V. Bessmertny was born in the Donbass, Belokurakinsky district, Luhansk region. Citizen of Ukraine, Ukrainian. He has two higher educations, one of which he received at a diplomatic university. Specialist in the field of diplomacy, international relations, political science and country studies. For some time he worked abroad. Currently lives in Odessa. From the author
Almost all of us are under illusions about the United States of America. Most of our compatriots who have lived a conscious life in the former Soviet Union, under the influence of the former views instilled in them, imagine the United States as a kind of soulless monster, trampling on human dignity, human needs and devouring everything in its path. This “soviet” stereotype was vividly shown in one of his books by the writer Yu.I. Mukhin: “. .. Take a closer look … at American films – in the USA it is forbidden to keep dogs in the apartments of most houses … My friend now lives in the south of the USA in his house … on … a plot of land of half an acre, i.e. 20 acres. What breed of dog do you have, I ask? He answers – it’s impossible! .. My friend lives on the ocean, I ask how often does he bathe in it? The answer is – you can’t, if you want to swim – pay and swim in a pool specially built on the shore.
Duel’s Vienna correspondent A. Dubrov collected from the pages of the Austrian publications Kurier and Der Standard the following information about the level of freedom in the United States:
I think she was talking too loudly on her cell phone. After that, he handcuffed the woman.
A similar incident happened on the Washington subway. The teenager bit off a chocolate bar, and eating and drinking on the subway is prohibited. The policeman put handcuffs on him and took him to the station.
In Ocala, Florida, a nine-year-old boy drew a drawing at school that a teacher said contained “an element of violence.” The teacher called the police, who handcuffed the boy and took him to the police station.
In 1999, a neighbor falsely informed an 11-year-old boy that he was sexually harassing his little sister. The boy was dragged out of bed at night, handcuffed and thrown into prison for 6 weeks, until it turned out that the neighbor had lied.
In Florida, a five-year-old girl was detained for bad behavior in a kindergarten. The girl was handcuffed and taken to the police station.”
I will be told again that in the USA there is freedom of speech and freedom of movement. But if they have freedom of movement, then why don’t they leave this lousy country, and if they have freedom of speech, then why don’t they use it to change their dog ways? Because, they will answer me, they like such orders. That’s right: if a person is a slave by nature, then such orders will suit him . ..
So… it remains for me to say:
“And these fucked-up slaves are teaching us, Soviet people, freedom!”
At the same time, America is beautifully portrayed in Hollywood films as the country of the “golden dream”. Outwardly, life in it is beautiful, bright, modern, but it is all kind of artificial, ostentatious. There, too, there are problems and, moreover, considerable ones. For example, the country has a rather high crime rate (robbery is in the lead), there are numerous cases of delays in paying salaries, and a lot of jobs are low-paid. If we compare our problems with the American ones, they are identical, only the levels of their occurrence and solutions are different. But in general, as the famous song says:
“There is the same blue sky
And the same difficult life.
Maybe it’s happier and richer there,
Brighter colors and warmer summers,
But they also cry from pain there,
They also give birth to children in pain . .. ”
American history is already 250 years old, but it has never been frozen. The States are not characterized by stagnation, they are in permanent development. They went through difficult times when women, farmers did not have the right to vote, when there was racial discrimination. These social flaws were eliminated there after 150 years of their statehood. We are only 25 years old and we still have a long way to go. The main thing is not to create problems for yourself, but to take the best from the experience of others. And there is a lot to learn from the USA!
My advice, if you have such an opportunity, do not hesitate to hit the road across the ocean, you will not regret it. The states are worth visiting!
Some of you, paraphrasing M. Isakovsky, will pessimistically say that “we don’t need an overseas coast, nor America, we don’t need and we don’t need a foreign sun, and we don’t need a foreign land!”. Anyone who thinks so, you are wrong. After all, it is not in vain, with a long-term vision and for the future, the wise Kobzar bequeathed to us “learn someone else’s and don’t shy away from your own”! All this in creative unity will bring you personally and the Ukrainian state only benefit and prosperity.
Just keep in mind, if you are coming to the United States for the first time, everything will be new for you there: people, customs, food, money and much more. It is understandable that you are a little confused. Of course, you will be grateful if someone will help you by explaining what’s what, isn’t it?
So, the purpose of this publication is to help everyone who dared to cross the ocean, to feel not a stranger, but an equal among equals in this highly developed country, covered with halos of different, and contradictory, glory. I am sure that the book will become your reliable friend, an interesting guide and an exclusive reference book. At the same time, regardless of who you are – a politician, an official, a businessman or just an inquisitive person.
