Brilliant Starts Learning Academy – Preschool & Daycare Serving New Braunfels, TX
Inspiring Greatness From the Very Beginning
Encouraging Big Dreams, Daily Accomplishments, And Educational And Social Success
Our mother and daughter team, Patricia and Kallie Norman, are joint directors who are on-site every day to welcome and nurture the children in our community. Family-owned and operated, we are inviting your child into their home-away-from-home, a place for them to learn, laugh, and grow. We believe that every child deserves love, affection, a sense of family, and friendship, our promise to you while your child is in our care.
Leaving your lovely baby in someone else’s care can be hard, no matter how capable and qualified. We take additional precautions to keep your child safe, like monitoring our rooms with cameras and access to the building by key or code only.
We protect your child, as well as the environment, from harsh, harmful chemicals that are most commonly used at other daycares. Instead, we use plant-based products that are as effective yet completely safe and non-toxic for your child.
This magical, wide-open space boasts a loose-parts play table and a cozy reading area on a patch of indoor grass. Your child can explore this sensory room every day. Continuously rotating decor and props inspire children’s marvel and sense of wonder.
Imagine your child getting messy with paints, happily creating while at play. We believe that inventive, artistic playsets free your child’s spirit and mind in ways that benefit other areas of learning, like math and reading.
Lovingly dubbed “Chelsea’s Garden,” children can explore this natural playscape under the sun and sky. The garden itself hosts a myriad of sweet learning opportunities, such as care and patience, tending and watering, as little shoots grow into fruits and vegetables.
Meltdowns and conflicts transform into teachable moments when knowledgeable teachers diffuse with Conscious Discipline®. Learning how to cultivate healthy relationships is a skill your child will carry forward through the rest of their lives.
Self-regulation isn’t a skill that children are born knowing, so we gently coach children and teach them about their emotions. Using the Generation Mindful® tool kit and the Kindness Curriculum, children create their inner peace.
By showing a child that they matter, we give them a sense of self-worth and confidence. When your child feels safe and valued, they can accomplish more, live up to higher expectations, and get a sense of reward from their efforts.
Your child gains a learning advantage with exposure to various enrichment opportunities. We believe every child deserves these enrichments as a part of their early learning experience, which is why we include:
- Basic coding concepts for a strong foundation in technological skills
- Baby Sign Language for younger children, to enhance communication
- Music as a daily activity, for movement, rhythm, and more
- Dance by a specialized teacher, for a nominal fee
- Soccer lessons by a specialized teacher, for a nominal fee
Our rooms and play activities encourage your child to discover and master gross and fine motor skills. All movements, big and small, are practiced every day through climbing and crawling, as well as smaller motions that prepare the hand for writing.

We love the staff at BSLA! Our daughter has grown so much since she was a baby at the daycare. She has learned manners, colors, letters, and has gained a significant amount of social skills. The staff is welcoming to new ideas and constructive criticism, and is supportive of every child and parent. The facility is very safe and clean, and Mrs. Trish holds her staff to high expectations and standards. Our daughter looks forward to going to school everyday of the week!

As our last day came to a close it couldn’t be more bitter sweet. Since my baby started we found a home away from home for him. The teachers were all amazing and we will miss them so very much. They treated my son as one of their own and we couldn’t be more thankful. Thank you to all the staff for making leaving our little boy in the hands of very caring people! If we ever need daycare we will be back.

My children have been to several daycares, and I have personally worked at several daycares, and Brilliant Starts is by far the best one! 2 of my children currently attend, and I would not change daycares. When I drop them off and pick them up each day, they are doing educational and fun activities and they love being there. The teachers are great at communicating with parents. I would recommend this daycare to anyone looking for the best for their child.

WHERE TO SPEND THIS HOT TEXAS SUMMER – Our Texas – Russian Newspaper in Houston, Dallas, San-Antonio, Austin, Texas
SMALL TOWN CHARM Texas, the so-called Texas Hill Country, was founded by a German prince in 1845. Here, historical buildings of German architecture, many cozy cafes and bars, and interesting museums have been preserved. On the streets in the city center, the crowns of old oaks provide shade, which is so necessary for pedestrians, and in the city park there is a huge pool fed by water from underground sources. The park has a children’s railway.
Just down the road from downtown New Braunfels is Historic Gruene (pronounced “Green”), home to Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas and one of the most famous concert halls.
But the most important thing for tourists in summer is the presence of reservoirs where you can cool off.
New Braunfels boasts two wonderful rivers that the whole family can swim in: the Guadalupe River and the Comal River, known as “the longest short river in the world.”
This is one of the most popular water rafting spots in Texas. The water temperature is very refreshing as the river is fed by underground springs. The crowns of huge oaks, growing along both banks, close over the river, and you peacefully float along, enjoying the scenery. You can bring your own lap or hire one of the many river outfitters to rent a lap, who will provide parking, transportation to and from the car, life jackets and more to make your river navigation easy and fun.
In addition (if the summer is not dry and the water level in the river allows), here you can swim in inflatable boats, canoes and kayaks, water bicycles.
New Braunfels boasts one of the most popular water parks in Texas (and the world): it was here on the Comal River that the first Schlitterbahn was born. Now they are two different water parks with 51 attractions including water slides, wave pools, lazy rivers, children’s playgrounds and more. And if you book an overnight stay at one of the Schlitterbahn hotels between May and September, admission to the water park is free.
Since the town was founded by immigrants from Germany, lovers of real draft beer live here and brewing flourishes. You can visit over a dozen breweries in and around New Braunfels on the specially designed Hill Country Craft Beer Route.
Just outside of town is Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, where you can get up close and personal with over 500 animals, including 40 different exotic, native and endangered species from around the world. From the comfort of your car, you travel along a six-mile route along hills, stream beds and magnificent branching oaks, and ostriches look into your windows, which you can give food, various ungulates cross the road, on the playground you can play with baby animals.
Right at the same crossroads where you enter the ranch, there is another great place – caves Natural Bridge Caverns . On a hot summer day, it will be nice to cool off a bit and go underground.
A mesmerizing picture of illuminated rock formations with all sorts of stalactites and stalagmites creates a fantastic atmosphere. You can also choose an adventure trail that will take you to the unexplored parts of the wild caves. Above ground, there is the Twisted Trails aerial rope route that will give you an adrenaline rush once again.
Whether you want to go water skiing or try your hand at wakeboarding (similar to water skiing, but only one ski), Texas Ski Ranch is consistently ranked as one of the best in the world. With three rope systems and a boat lake, there really is something for water sports enthusiasts of all levels. And newbies are also welcome.
When it comes to where to eat, New Braunfels has no shortage of places to do so. You can enjoy Texan BBQ on the Guadeloupe coastline, delicious Tex-Mex cuisine, but you can also add a piece of history to your dinner.
Naturally, authentic German food can be found at places like the Alpine Haus and the oldest German bakery in Texas, Naegelin’s. And in the evenings, an accordionist in national costume will play in many German restaurants.
And of course New Braunfels will celebrate July 4th with classic Independence Day traditions, including an old-fashioned parade in the morning and dazzling fireworks in the evening. Historic downtown New Braunfels will be adorned with red, white and blue colors in honor of the July 4th Old Time Parade, a traditional celebration of small town charm.
But the celebrations start long before then, with special events kicking off Friday and continuing through Tuesday, making New Braunfels the perfect place to enjoy a long holiday weekend.

Adolph Douai
Adolph Douai
Carl Daniel Adolph Douai (1819 – 1888), known to his peers as “Adolf”, was a German Texan teacher and socialist and abolitionist newspaper editor. Douai was expelled from Texas in 1856 because of his published protest against slavery, living out the rest of his life as a school operator in the New England city of Boston. Douai is remembered as one of the leading American Marxists of the 19th century, as well as a pioneer of the Kindergarten movement in America. 9year in Altenburg, Thuringia in the Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, the son of a school teacher. [1] The Douai family was from French booty, having fled to Dresden after the fall of the French Revolution. [1]
Douai’s family was poor and Adolf started working at the age of 8. [1] However, as a boy he was well educated, graduated from the Altenburg Gymnasium and the Gymnasium. Leipzig University, where he studied philology and history. [2] As a child, he worked in various ways. a newsboy, as a father’s assistant in teaching peasant children, as a knitter of home-made woolen scarves, among other small jobs. [1]
As a child, Douai was malnourished and short: at 19, he was only 4 feet 8 inches (1. 42 m). [1]
During his studies at the university, Douai found that the scholarship was not enough and therefore tried to supplement his income by writing. In a short autobiography published at the time of his death, Douai claimed to have written several novels and two theological articles during his student years. [1]
After graduating from the University of Leipzig, Douai tried to enter the University of Jena as a student of philosophy and pedagogy. However, he was denied admission and forced to go to work to earn enough money to study as a paying student. [1] Douai took a job as a private tutor in Russia as the most lucrative employment during this period. As he sought to marry Baroness Agnes von Beust and faced a two-year deadline for obtaining permanent employment placed before him by her family, Douai instead passed the imperial examinations for the University of Dorpat, which qualified him for a doctorate and allowed him to work for the Russian government. [1]
Douai married Baroness Agnes von Beust on September 26, 1843 in the city of Königsberg. Together they eventually had ten children.
Douai was instrumental in establishing Neue Braunfelser Zeitung in 1852 a German newspaper edited by Ferdinand Lindheimer.
Life in Russia had a radical effect on Douai, and after 5 years in the country, he returned to his native Altenburg, convinced that a revolution for a constitutional and democratic government was behind the scenes. There he bought a building, hired assistants, and set up a private preparatory school. [1]
With the advent of the Revolution of 1848, Douai helped organize clubs for workers and students and took an active part in the political movement, being a member of the revolutionary Landtag of Saxe-Altenberg. [1] His political activities brought him to the attention of the Saxon government, which arrested him and charged him with high treason and disorder in the summer of 1848. [1] Douai was found guilty of treason, but was nonetheless sentenced to one year in prison on three counts, forcing him to close his school and pay off its property. [1]
Texas years
After release from prison [2] The government forced Douai to emigrate, and he did so. Douai came to the United States and settled in the new state of the country. Texas in the German colony of New Braunfels. [3] There he helped raise funds for the launch of Neue Braunfelser Zeitung in November 1852, a publication edited by his friend Ferdinand Lindheimer (1801-1879). [4]
Douai also tried to found another school, but Douai’s freethinker’s efforts were thwarted by a local Catholic priest who opposed the teacher, prompting parents to withdraw their children from his school. [1] Subsequently, Douai fell ill with cholera, which led to the termination of schooling. [1]
When his first commercial attempt failed, Douai moved to a nearby town. San Antonio and turned his attention to newspaper work, launching the newspaper, San Antonio Deutsche Zeitung (German News). [3] In the pages of his newspaper, Douai strongly condemned slavery as an evil incompatible with democracy and called for its abolition. [2] Douai advocated the creation of a state free from slavery in western Texas. [2] These controversial positions in the slave state of Texas caused widespread public antipathy and loss of advertisers and led to the necessary sale of his publication in 1856. [1]
Northern years
Douai was the author of one of the first American international socialist pamphlets in English, a treatise of 1877. Better times!
With the American Civil War in the wind, Douai moved north to Boston, Massachusetts, where he began working as a private tutor Also teaching at the New England Institute for the Blind in South Boston. [1] While in Boston, Douai founded a club of German workers, which in 1859 sponsored a three-year school with a first class. Kindergarten in America. [1] [2]
In 1860, Douai became editor of the New York Times. Democrat , a position he soon left to take over as headmaster of Hoboken Academy. He taught there for six years, moving to New York in 1866 and founding his own school. [1] This New York school lost its leased building in 1871 due to Broadway expansion, prompting Douai to move to Newark, New Jersey, to take over as headmaster of Green Street School. Douai remained in Newark in this position until 1876, when a new Board of Directors was elected to oppose him. [1]
After leaving his position in Newark, Douai accepted an offer to open a new educational academy in Irvington, New Jersey, but no suitable building was available for the project. This event essentially ended Douai’s teaching career. [1]
He was one of the earliest and prominent members of the Socialist Labor Party of America, the first Marxist political party in America, established as the “Workers’ Party of the USA” in 1876. [5]
In the autumn of 1877, Douai had a short-lived plan to become an English translator. Das Kapital, Karl Marx’s greatest opus first published in 1867. [6] In January 1878 the German-language socialist daily newspaper New Yorker Volkszeitung (New York People’s News) was founded, and Douai began to write extensively for this publication. [1] It was there that Douai gained his greatest fame as a journalist and publicist.

San Antonio Japanese Tea Garden – Wikipedia
The San Antonio Japanese Tea Garden , or Sunken Gardens in Brackenridge Park, San Antonio, Texas, USA opened in an abandoned limestone stone quarry in the early 20th century. It was also known as China Tea Garden Gate , Chinese Tea Garden Gate , China Sunken Garden Gate and is listed in the US. National Register of Historic Places.
Contents
[2]
In 1880, the Alamo Cement Company was founded, producing cement for 26 years in a kiln that still has a chimney. The workers at the quarry were supported by a small “village” inhabited mostly by the Americans who worked at the site. They and their families became popular with tourists who bought pottery, hand-woven baskets and food.
Around 1917, City Parks Commissioner Ray Lambert visualized an Oriental-style garden at the quarry. His engineer W.S. Delery developed plans, but work did not begin until individual and private donors provided funds at 1918 year. Lambert used prison labor to turn the quarry into a complex that included walkways, stone arch bridges, an island, and a Japanese pagoda. [2]
At the entrance to the garden, the Mexican-born artist Dionisio Rodriguez (1891-1955) replicated the Japanese Torii gate in his unique style of concrete structure imitating wood. In 1919, at the invitation of the city of Kimi, Eizo Jingu, a local artist of Japanese origin, moved into the garden. In 1926 they opened the “Bamboo Room” selling light meals and tea. Kimi and Miyoshi Jingu tended the garden, lived in the park, and raised eight children. Kimi was a representative of the Shizuoka Tea Association and was considered an expert in the tea business at the national level. He died at 1938 and in 1941 the family was evicted with the rise of anti-Japanese sentiment from World War II. [2]
The garden was renamed the Chinese Tea Garden to prevent destruction and vandalism of the tea garden during World War II, as the Japanese tea gardens of many other cities were vandalized. Chinese American family Ted and Esther Wu operated a pagoda diner until the early 1960s. In 1984, under the leadership of Mayor Mr. Henry Cisneros, the City restored the original name “Japanese Tea Garden” in a ceremony attended by Jingu children and representatives of the Japanese government. [2]
Renovation
For many years the garden has been neglected and dilapidated, becoming a target of graffiti and vandalism. Due to limited funding, the city threatened to close the garden, but community and park supporters rallied and lobbied to keep the park open. [2]
In 2005, the city spent about $550,000 in bonds to restore the pagoda-like pavilion and Jingu House. [2]
