Two and a half years ago, an event took place at the ancient Wesleyan University, which was perceived as a shaking of the foundations.

The university, which is located in Middletown, Connecticut, in the fall, as usual, arrived another replenishment – 800 freshmen. What was unusual was that a third of them were accepted without taking the SAT test. Today, the ranks of the violators of a long tradition have grown significantly. About 10% of the nation’s nearly 3,000 four-year colleges no longer require applicants to take what used to be the holy of holies test scores. Moreover, this list includes not only expensive, elite universities, but also ordinary educational institutions owned by the city or state.

So, college without the SAT? Is it conceivable? Generations of Americans with college degrees can’t help but shudder to remember how much hassle and nerves it cost them and their parents to get through this obstacle and not only pass the exam, but perform at the highest level in order to compete with admission.

A bit of history. The first SAT test was conducted in 1926. It was developed by Princeton psychology professor Carl Brigham. The original goal was to measure intelligence. For 97 minutes the students had to answer 315 questions. Some of them were extremely simple. For example: “A pack containing 20 cigarettes costs 15 cents. How many cigarettes can you buy with 90 cents?

The president of Harvard University, James Bryant Conant, turned out to be an ardent enthusiast of such testing. He was not only a brilliant administrator, but also an outstanding chemist who also distinguished himself in many other areas.

He participated in the creation of the atomic bomb, was one of the key figures in the restructuring of post-war Europe. He was also the architect of the entire modern American education system, from kindergarten to college.

Conant was worried about the state of education in the country. He believed that a new “aristocracy” had developed in America, the offspring of which had advantages in obtaining higher education. The scientist believed that testing would help give way to gifted young people, regardless of the financial condition and historical merit of their parents. And this would be consistent with the principles that guided the “founding fathers” of the country.

In 1813 Thomas Jefferson wrote to John Adams: “I agree with you that there is a natural aristocracy in human society. Its basis is virtue and talents… There is also an artificial aristocracy based on wealth and birth, without any virtue and talents.”

Thus, the purpose of the SAT test was the most noble, in the spirit of the “founding fathers” – to give priority to intelligence and ability. Since 1926, the name and criteria have changed. SAT was originally short for Scholastic Aptitude Test. Since 1994, the same abbreviation has meant the Scholastic Assessment Test. Since 2005, the official name is SAT Reasoning Test. And now – just SAT.

Over the years, the number of points that the subject was supposed to score also changed. Today the scale is from 400 to 1600. The test consists of three sections (Mathematics, Reading, Writing and Language).

The SAT is developed and maintained by an organization called the College Board.

In the US, the SAT is held seven times a year: October, November, December, January, March (or April in some states), May, and June.

“Part trick, part scam”

There is a lot of controversy about the SAT. They say that it very approximately reflects the level of intelligence of applicants. An article by Bard College president Lyon Botstin in Time magazine is titled “The SAT is part gimmick, part scam.”

Botstin, who not only runs the college but is also the music director and conductor of the American Symphony Orchestra, questions the need for the SAT. In his opinion, the main criterion for admission to college is school performance, graduate grades. And a test in which you need to choose the correct answer from several proposed options, according to Botstin, cannot in any way reflect the true knowledge of the applicant. And all this is very far from the real life of the future specialist. Botstin writes, “No scientist, engineer, writer, psychologist, artist, or physician gets the job done by choosing the right answers from the alternatives given.”

The President of Bard College is not the first to criticize the testing system. The voices of opponents like him were so loud that in 2016 the College Board made some changes to the rules of the test and announced the creation of a “new SAT”, which measures not intelligence, but the amount of knowledge gained over all the years of being in school. However, according to critics, “the mountain gave birth to a mouse”, the changes are insignificant and are purely “cosmetic” in nature.

Since 1959, the SAT has had a rival, ACT (an acronym for American College Testing). There are differences, but not that significant. For example, an AST lasts two hours and 55 minutes and 40 minutes for an essay. SAT – three hours and 50 minutes for an essay. SAT, as already mentioned, is conducted in three subjects. AST – four each (natural sciences are added). Nevertheless, this exam gained such popularity that by 2012 it surpassed the SAT in the number of colleges for which it serves as the main criterion for admission. What does it say? That there is a continuous search for alternative options. For example, a few years ago, the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) began inviting applicants to submit so-called “creative portfolios” – videos demonstrating the candidate’s talents in creating some new products – from computer programs and robots to glow-in-the-dark socks (to make it easier find). Institute employee Don Wendell, who works in the admissions office, explained at a meeting with applicants: “We understand that scores do not give a complete picture of you. So we’re looking to learn something about your personality in general.”

Specialists look to foreign experience. Let’s say the assessment of prospective students in Singapore is of interest. There, high school graduates are invited to submit a group project that reflects their knowledge and ability to cooperate and communicate – qualities necessary for the economy of tomorrow.

That is, fermentation is clearly underway. However, although there are signs of some change, the revolution has not yet taken place. And you have to keep living with what you have. That is, in most cases, focus on the need to pass the tests if you are seriously thinking about college.

Money and more

I must say that neither children nor their parents are enthusiastic about the mention of SAT or AST. And not just because it costs money. Not so much the test itself, but the preparation for it. No less frightening nervous costs. The thought causes anxiety: will I be able to get a high enough score? Will the test reveal my true knowledge? Will I fail because I am confused in the exam?

However, money is also a very significant factor. It turned out that this entire test preparation industry is a powerful financial machine. Both the Iowa City-headquartered ACT and the Manhattan-based College Board are non-profit organizations by status. However, their total annual income reaches $1 billion.

New York Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina recently announced that a record 61,800 students in grades seven through ninth took the SAT last year. This is 51% more than in the previous academic year. Then the test was taken by 40,803 students of this age. What caused such a noticeable increase? Until 2017, to take the SAT, you had to pay a $46 registration fee, register online, and travel to the exam site outside of school hours. For many students, this was an obstacle that has now been eliminated. Children were given the opportunity to take the SAT for free during the regular school day. Carmen Farina believes the city’s decision not to charge money for the test was the deciding factor.

It’s good that the New York authorities have taken care of the costs. And what about in other cities? What if the family has a limited budget? You have to get out somehow.

“What’s good is that many schools have a Preliminary Standardized Aptitude Test (PSAT) for eighth and ninth graders,” says Jacqueline Wayens, editor of InsideSchool. com, an online pedagogical publication. – I know that many parents hire tutors to prepare for the SAT when their children are still in high school. For those who cannot afford it, I would advise you to take advantage of free preparatory courses. There are many highschools that offer such courses during the school year.”

What if there is no money to pay for the SAT test itself? Wayens recalls that there are government subsidies.

“Sometimes when parents are in a situation where they are already on government assistance, they are exempted from the SAT fee,” Jacqueline says. – You need to go to the school and contact the counselor, who will give the student the appropriate cancellation code. This is especially important for students who take the test more than once. In such cases, when it is possible not to pay, even when you take a real SAT test, you can consider it only as preparation, because you know that without breaking your pocket you can repeat it again, and with better results.

Jonathan Kremer, Director St. Mary High School in Manhasset, Long Island, recommends using free internet sites to prepare for the SAT.

“There are many such sites,” says Kremer. “You don’t have to pay a cent for them. And besides, they provide an opportunity to track the progress of the student. Everything starts from the level at which he is today, and then, in the course of self-training, he quickly moves to another, higher level.

The pace of modern life is such that there is not enough time for everything. And children’s heads are occupied with many different things, among which SAT / PSAT is not always in the first place. Football or music may look like much more important things in the eyes of schoolchildren.
