Summer camps and language schools in Malta
Mysterious and attractive Republic of Malta is a small country within the EU, located on several islands, the main ones being Malta, Gozo and Comino. English is one of the official languages of the country, which has many local, British, European and American language schools and international children’s language camps. Along with the sun, the sea, the beaches, the mild Mediterranean climate, the mysterious history and the many sights to see, a good argument in favor of English language tours to Malta is the price.

Children’s camps and schools in Malta for the holidays
In Malta, children can choose a language program for every taste: immerse themselves in learning English for 15-20 hours a week or spend as much time studying the language as will be enough to remember the school curriculum and feel confident in the international environment. For this, courses of 5-10 hours a week are suitable. Group lessons can be supplemented with individual lessons with native English speakers.
Summer language schools offer tuition for a minimum of 2 weeks. This time is enough to refresh your knowledge of English and talk. Upon arrival at school in Malta, all children undergo a mandatory test to determine the level of language proficiency. Further, students receive distribution into groups depending on age and level of language proficiency. Professional teachers of the summer language camp identify the shortcomings of pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary of each student. During the training, children greatly improve their knowledge – their progress is obvious. At the end of the summer course, each child who completes the summer English course receives a certificate of completion.
There is a lot to see and do on the island in your spare time! Malta protects ancient sanctuaries that have been preserved since the 4th and 3rd millennium BC. A whole group of megalithic temples is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The country has many world attractions and later eras: the Palace of the Grand Master of the XVI century is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List; the tower of St. Lucian, built in 1610 – 1611 by the Knights of Malta; Casa Ross Piccola mansion.
In addition to historical caves and palaces, children will be able to visit the oldest theater in Europe – Manoel, an art museum displaying works by Mattia Preti, Tintoretto, Carpaccio, Domenico di Michelino, Matthias Stomer, Rivera. In Malta, children will see with their own eyes the most ancient structures of mankind.

Organization ILGA Europe has published a report on the rights of LGBT people in Europe on the International Day Against Homophobia. About how gays and lesbians live in Malta and Poland – at DW.

“It’s really possible to live comfortably here as a gay or a lesbian,” says Caterina Camilleri of her homeland, the Mediterranean island of Malta with just 520,000 inhabitants. “We are glad that our government supports us. Of course, there are cases of discrimination, such is the life of an LGBT person. However, in Malta, the positive sides greatly outweigh the negative ones,” she says.
Camilleri, who previously lived in the United States for a long time, returned to her homeland and works in a local LGBT organization on the island of Gozo, which is part of the Maltese state. She is pleased that Malta tops the list of European countries that ensured the widest rights for homosexuals, lesbians and transgender people.

publishes an index of legal and public attitudes towards LGBT people in 49 European countries, which is formed according to 74 criteria.
Malta was the first in Europe to ban conversion therapy
Malta has been at the top for several years now, fulfilling the ILGA criteria by 89 percent. According to Caterina Camilleri, the Maltese authorities were among the first in Europe to ban conversion therapy, which was used to “cure” homosexuality. Legislators in Malta are very active in this area.
“In the last five or six years, the LGBT community has really blossomed on the island,” she says. Of course, there is occasional animosity towards homosexuals, but considering how small the islands are and how strong the Catholic Church is still here, Caterina Camilleri is pleasantly surprised by how freely the LGBT community lives in the country.
In terms of rights such as gender identity, combating hate crimes, same-sex marriage, adoption, gender recognition, there is a large gap between countries in the west and east of the continent, according to the ILGA report Europe. Among the states that are members of the European Union, things are the worst in Poland, which meets the ILGA criteria by only 15 percent.
The situation in Poland worsened after the PiS 9 came to power0049
Psychologist Julija Kata, who works for Trans-Fuzja, a transgender rights organization in Warsaw, knows why. According to her, LGBT people in Poland have practically no legal protection. “We don’t have laws against hate speech. There are punishments for hate crimes in the Criminal Code, but they do not apply to actions based on sexual orientation, gender or identity. This is considered normal,” laments Kata. In her opinion, unlike Malta, discrimination in Poland comes from the ruling national conservative Law and Justice Party (PiS) and its associated media.

The situation in Poland has been deteriorating since 2015, when the party took over the government. “Hate is everywhere. When you hear that “your transgender or gay children are a danger to other children,” and the media publishes such hate-filled messages every day, then you no longer feel safe in this country,” shares Kata. According to the activist, many people left Poland because they were unable to endure it.
In principle, in Poland you can tell your relatives about your homosexuality, but you never know how they will react to it. According to Yulia Kata, it is necessary to allow same-sex partnerships in Poland as soon as possible, and even better, same-sex marriages. In her opinion, it is inconceivable that children who undergo sex reassignment surgery and want to change their name should sue their parents for this. According to Polish law, in such cases, it is considered that the parents made an error when entering the name on the birth certificate, and this error can only be corrected through the courts.
The European Union has no competence in the field of family law
In general, the situation in Europe is changing for the better, according to the LGBT association ILGA. “While we are seeing targeted attacks on the transgender community, we are also seeing countries where governments are starting to reform transgender laws, as is happening in Germany right now. Politicians are understanding about the issues and are determined to continue reforms,” ILGA spokeswoman Katrin Hugendubel told DW ( Katrin Hugendubel).
For example, Spain has greatly improved its ILGA scores because it has a comprehensive gender identity law based on self-reporting by the person affected. The country also bans medical procedures that harm intersex children and bans discrimination based on sexual orientation or identity.
Moldova and Croatia also improved their positions in the ILGA ranking compared to the previous year. The pro-European government of Moldova has adopted a liberal law on gender identity. Croatia has expanded adoption rights for same-sex couples.
“It’s a glimmer of hope, good news,” says Katrin Hugendubel, longtime head of ILGA Europe in Brussels. Much cannot be expected from the European Union in this area, since it does not have competence in the field of family law. These issues are decided by the EU Member States. However, they are blocking the expansion of the EU anti-discrimination directive, which so far only applies to actions in the workplace. Hugendubel believes that the EU could do more if its member countries had the political will.
“Not everything is black or white”
Yuliya Kata does not have an unambiguous opinion about the situation in Poland: even in the homophobic and transphobic atmosphere in the country, not everything is only black or white, there are positive changes and failures in society. “It’s hard to say whether this is very bad or good, because there are so many factors on both sides that make the situation better or worse.
