Shortly before the end of the reception, the Americans saw Admiral Togo, heading along the path to the exit. For the Americans, the need to defend the newly annexed Philippine Islands from a (possibly) expansionist Japan has taken on new urgency. President Roosevelt’s mediation did nothing to save the old friendship. It brought the Russo-Japanese War to an end after the signing of the Pact of Portsmouth (in New Hampshire), but infuriated the Japanese, who were denied indemnities to restore the economy undermined during the war.

Under the circumstances, Roosevelt saw fit to withdraw all capital ships. When the Ohio sailed for the United States in mid-September 1906, Midshipmen Nimitz and Kanaga were among the remaining Americans, as both were transferred to the venerable cruiser Baltimore, which had fought alongside Dewey in the Battle of Manila Bay. Nimitz and Kanaga believed—perhaps rightly—that they selected and retained the most capable officers to serve in the East.

In a letter written to grandfather Nimitz on 12 December 19’06 in Cavite in the Philippines, Chester reported that he and other graduate midshipmen had passed their ensign exams, and the results were likely to be known at the end of January. Exam results didn’t bother him. Chester had other good news.

“I have already written to you about trying to get an assignment here on one of the gunboats. So, the authorities assured me that I would take command of the gunboat Panei as soon as she entered service. She would be ready in about two weeks and would be cruising among the southern islands of the Philippine group. Although his former Spanish gunboat was only 92.5 feet long, Nimitz was thrilled to be her commander because, as he said: In addition, it should help me gain a certain confidence and ability to rely on myself.

On January 31, 1907, Chester and Bruce were promoted to Ensign. Nimitz soon departed Cavite on the Peney, and Kanaga was given command of a similar gunboat, the Paragua. In addition to the gunboat, Nimitz commanded a small unit at Pollock, Mindanao, with 22 Marines. “Figuratively speaking, I stood with one foot on the shore and the other in the sea,” Nimitz said, “but I lived on board the Peney. Those were great days. We had no radio, no mail, no fresh food supplies. We hunted a lot. One of the sailors even said that he could no longer look a duck in the eye.

However, this idyll was suddenly interrupted by events in other places. After the end of the Russo-Japanese War, Japanese veterans began to move to California in search of a new home, where they agreed to work for such little money that it undermined the job market on the West Coast. San Francisco responded by segregating Japanese schoolchildren, a hint of racial inferiority that infuriated the people of Japan. Under pressure from President Roosevelt, San Francisco agreed to put an end to this practice, and in response, the president entered into an agreement with Japan to restrict immigration. Then, holding back the Japanese warmongers, he announced 9July 1907 on the transfer of the fleet of American battleships from the Atlantic to San Francisco.

The threat of war caused the US Asiatic Fleet to develop a feverish activity that reached Pollock. In the end, the Japanese in 1904 did not hesitate to attack the Russian fleet, which had fifteen modern battleships against six Japanese ones. Togo and his admirals first destroyed the divided Russian Far Eastern squadron in parts, and then waited for the Russian Baltic squadron to arrive from the Atlantic and also defeated it. If Japan intended to use the same strategy against the American fleet, then the obvious place to start the war would be the Philippines, and the moment would be now, while the Atlantic Fleet had not yet arrived in the Pacific.

Nimitz and his Paney were called to the large naval base at Cavite. “Then there was so much talk about the war with Japan,” Nimitz recalled, “that when we approached Manila Bay, I almost sent reconnaissance ashore, wanting to make sure that we were still holding this place. ”

After mooring the gunboat, Nimitz put on a white uniform with a dagger and went ashore to report the arrival to the base commander, Rear Admiral Uriah Rose Harris, who was nicknamed “Uria Gip” by his subordinates. He was a strict boss with an icy face, who believed that smiles had no place in the service. Harris dryly informed Nimitz that he was appointed commander of the destroyer Decatur, which needed repairs, and should immediately take the ship to drydock. In announcing such an extraordinary appointment, the admiral could afford at least a slight paternal smile. It was not now, nor was it then, the order of the day to appoint twenty-two-year-old ensigns as destroyer commanders, even in times of grave danger.
