Or maybe you just want to transform the front yard of the house you’ve lived in all your life – add a bright shimmer to the front lawn, backyard and patio. Or do you dream of adding some creativity to the balcony of your apartment, where you like to drink strong coffee in the evenings and watch the stars. In any case, you probably want beautiful landscape lighting without spending a lot of money, hiring electricians and expensive wiring. And this is where garden lights and solar-powered garlands become the best choice. And if we talked about solar lights in detail in the previous article, today we’ll talk about wonderful accessories for your garden – LED garlands.
Garden garlands consist of a solar panel, a rechargeable battery and a light sensor.
The process of creating electric current begins with the work of the panel, which absorbs the sun’s rays and converts them into electricity to power the LEDs. This element consists of several layers of crystalline silicon and chemicals with negative electrons and a positively charged space. Sunlight passes through these layers and activates the negative electrons, causing them to move into the positively charged voids. As a result, a current is generated, which is sent through the built-in wires to the battery and stored there until the light sensor gives the command to give it to the LEDs. Accordingly, the larger the battery, the more solar energy it stores.
Outdoor garlands for landscape lighting of the garden are equipped with photoreceptors that detect the level of daylight, react to darkness and give the command to turn on the light. The most advanced models are controlled by remote controls, have timers and several modes of operation – dimming the light or flashing. Bright and durable, they do not heat up, and therefore exclude ignition. This is the best and safest solution for decorating shrubs and trees in the garden. This means that even in cloudy weather without the sun, the battery will still be charged and the LEDs will burn all night.
The only factor that affects the duration of garden lighting is shade. A well-shaded area can reduce the operating time of the device by 2 times. Therefore, place outdoor garlands on shrubs and trees growing in sunny areas. If the tree you want is in heavy shade, place a solar panel on its branches. There, it will definitely be fed by solar energy.
Another important point – do not place garlands near bright artificial lighting – lanterns and windows of the house, because the light sensor simply will not work.
Product performance depends on several factors. The first and most important is the maximum consumption of solar energy. If it does not exist, which happens on cloudy rainy days when the sun does not come out from behind the clouds all day, or during installation in a strong shade, the garland will not shine at night or its glow time will be reduced by 2 times. The second point is the cleanliness of the solar panel. If it is covered with a thick layer of dust and earth, it will not be able to accumulate sunlight, which will lead to the problems listed above.
In order for outdoor LED garlands with solar batteries to work to the maximum, two rules must be followed: install the panel in an open place where it will be exposed to direct sunlight and wipe it from dust once a week. To prolong the operation of the garlands, store them in a warm place for the winter, after removing the batteries.
How to choose solar strings for landscape lighting
Power. Solar garden lighting is rated at 3 watts in most cases. Of course, this is not enough for an independent light source, but it is quite enough for the magical illumination of trees and shrubs. For comparison, street lights for self-illumination of the territory have a power of 10 W, which is equal to 100 W of incandescent bulbs. The higher the power, the brighter the glow.
Solar glass type. The quality of the glass determines the amount of solar energy absorbed. Smooth glass transmits direct and diffused rays well. Corrugated increases the power of the garland by 12%, which is an ideal choice for cloudy regions.
Tempered glass boasts increased strength and reliability, but its cost will increase by 10%.
Battery type and capacity. There is no particular point in paying attention to the volume of the battery, since it is able to store energy for 8-10 hours of operation. In the spring-summer season, more is not needed – it gets dark late, and dawn comes early. If you live in a cloudy region, then a large capacity battery will be a plus. It is important to understand that VIP class landscape lighting works without battery replacement for about 10 years, while budget garlands and lanterns require battery replacement every 12-24 months. Most of the products have nickel-cadmium batteries, which have performed well in recent years.
