Vacuum cleaner is a constant assistant of all housewives, perfectly replacing brooms and brooms, dustpans and even mops. Modern variations of vacuum cleaners are significantly different from their predecessors. They are much more powerful, unpretentious and more functional. This model can not only vacuum, but also wash floors. The 5200 mAh Li-Ion battery promises long-lasting performance, while smartphone navigation provides convenient control. nine0005

During testing, we will find out if the sensors help to avoid stumbling on uneven floors, like this robot with navigation, and whether it cleans well, because it has only one side brush.

Xiaomi Mijia Sweeping Robot 1T has a round shape and standard dimensions familiar to most robot vacuum cleaners. On the top panel are the control buttons and an optical sensor responsible for the orientation of the device. nine0005

Another optical sensor is located at the front of the instrument, on the bumper. It detects approaching obstacles and facilitates the work of infrared sensors that are placed behind the dark glass surrounding the bumper.

Like most devices of this type, the movable bumper occupies half of the robot’s circumference and is equipped with not only optical, but also mechanical sensors that are triggered when it hits an obstacle. The air outlets are at the back.

The filtration system of Xiaomi Mijia Sweeping Robot 1T is simple: the role of a pre-filter is played by a fine nylon mesh at the outlet of the garbage bin, and for fine cleaning, a rectangular HEPA element with rubber seals around the perimeter is installed in the container.

The central brush has three U-shaped bristles and the same number of silicone fins: this design is equally effective on hard floors and carpets. The frame that fixes the brush has two steel brackets that prevent the vacuum cleaner from winding electrical wires and large objects that accidentally land on the floor on the shaft. nine0005

The single side brush is located on the left side of the bottom panel (when looking at the appliance from above). It is clip-on and can be easily replaced in case of breakage or wear.

The undercarriage of the device is no less traditional: one guide wheel and two drive wheels. The smooth surface guide is located in a plastic sphere and can be rotated through 360°. The leading treads have pronounced lugs, and their suspension allows you to change the robot’s clearance from 1 to 3.5 cm.

The wet cleaning unit is a shallow D-shaped container that snaps to the bottom of the cabinet. On its upper side there are contacts for powering an internal motor that pumps water when washing the floor, and a filler neck closed with a silicone plug.

The fiber cloth is attached to the wet cleaning unit with Velcro.

The base comes with a power cord with a Chinese standard plug, but our copy of the device also included an adapter to the European one.

In the box, we also found a device with a comb for cleaning the HEPA filter and a blade for cutting off winded threads and long hair from the brushes.

The documentation that comes with the vacuum cleaner is in Chinese, as well as the information on the box. For those who are still poorly able to read the language of the Celestial Empire, a quick start guide containing clear pictures is included in the box. nine0005

After reviewing the document and thinking about the diagrams, even a user with no experience with robotic vacuum cleaners is quite capable of figuring out how to unpack the device, choose a place for the base, prepare the room for cleaning and start operation.

From our point of view, valuable information gleaned from the illustrated manual is the need to start cleaning in daylight or artificial light: indeed, Mijia 1T is equipped with optical sensors operating in the visible range and is ineffective in the dark. nine0005

Control

On the top of the vacuum cleaner there are two buttons with clear logos. One of them starts the vacuum cleaner in automatic cleaning mode, the second turns on the return to base mode.

A long press on the start button puts the vacuum cleaner to sleep, and a long press on both buttons simultaneously activates the synchronization mode with a smartphone.

Smartphone control

The Mijia 1T Sweeping Robot is controlled by the familiar Mi Home app from Xiaomi Inc (more than 10 million downloads, average rating 4.4). nine0005

To connect our vacuum cleaner, you need to select the appropriate model from the extensive list of Xiaomi devices (section “Home Appliances”). But at this stage, we ran into a difficulty: Mijia 1T was not in the list, and the automatic device search failed.

The advice from one of the thematic forums helped to solve the problem: in order for this model to appear in the list, you should change the region from Russian to “Mainland China” in the application settings. Probably, the vacuum cleaner is intended exclusively for the domestic market or it is not yet supported in the Russian version of the application. nine0005

Otherwise, the connection went smoothly: at the command of the application, we held down both buttons on the top panel and waited for the vacuum cleaner to enter pairing mode. At this stage, the device creates a temporary Wi-Fi network and offers to connect to it. Having established the connection, the application transferred the office network settings to the device, and after half a minute the synchronization process was successfully completed.

Once it’s over, you can rename the device, assign it to one of the rooms in the Mi Home ecosystem (the default is “living room”) and agree to the terms of use of the application. nine0005

As the last step before starting work, the application offers to read a brief instruction on how to use the device – we have already seen it on paper, but here it is accompanied by Russian text.

Mapping related application features are experimental and disabled by default. We took the risk of experimenting and turned on the map save mode.

In the settings section, you can also turn on the power boost function on the carpet, allow cleaning to resume after a forced break, set up night mode, select the time zone, turn off notifications, select a language pack (Chinese and English are available) for voice messages and the desired volume level. nine0005

Operation

Before using the vacuum cleaner, remove all packaging materials, including shipping pads between the body and the bumper of the device.

Having placed the base as recommended by the instructions (at least half a meter of free space on the right and left and one and a half meters in front of it), we fully charged the battery of the vacuum cleaner – it took about three hours – and started the first cleaning.

Xiaomi Mijia 1T starts exploring the room by moving straight away from the base until it encounters an obstacle. When bumping into a wall or piece of furniture, the vacuum cleaner turns 180° over its left shoulder so that the single side brush describes a larger semicircle and continues to move. nine0005

Moving in an S-shaped “snake”, the robot bypasses the room, and on the application screen (with some delay: the data is stored and processed in the Chinese cloud, and not transmitted directly) a map of the apartment appears – the way the vacuum cleaner sees it.

At the last stage of cleaning, Mijia 1T once again goes around the accessible part of the apartment – along the perimeter, cleaning along the walls and corners – after which it reports the end of the work by voice message and returns to the base to charge.

At the end of the first tour of the apartment, a complete map of the premises appears on the application screen, marked up into rooms quite logically and similar to what we see in reality. After that, scheduled cleaning becomes available – both in the entire room and zonal, indicating the necessary rooms and areas. nine0005

Thanks to optical sensors, the robot perfectly orients itself, moving in a straight line and not deviating from the planned route, even when hitting obstacles and thresholds. Recall that the weak point of other robotic vacuum cleaners equipped only with infrared sensors is the inability to maintain a straight line and the associated problems with navigation. And this model has an excellent orientation system.

However, we cannot call the algorithm by which the known room is bypassed ideal: the robot exactly repeats the same route of movement, turning in the same places over and over again. The omitted areas are thus left unharvested at the next start. In our opinion, the well-known element of randomness would not interfere with the motion algorithm. nine0005

In the wet cleaning mode, this model wipes the surface evenly, without streaks and drops. The vacuum cleaner detects the presence of a washing module automatically: the washing mode becomes available in the application, in which the pump supplying water works, and the suction power is reduced.

When approaching an obstacle, the robot automatically avoids it by reducing its speed in advance and slowing down the rotation of the side brush. Mijia 1T bumper almost does not allow touching obstacles.

The robot goes around the base in an arc with a radius of about 40 cm, and part of the space around it (especially on the sides) will inevitably remain uncleaned. nine0005

When the robot reaches 20% battery level, it stops cleaning and returns to its base. Fully charged, it resumes its round of the room from the same place where it was interrupted. Cleaning will not continue if Do Not Disturb is turned on while charging.

Maintenance

To remove the waste container, open the top panel of the appliance and pull the container up. To empty the container, you need to open the side cover of the container and shake out its contents into the trash can. When cleaning, the HEPA filter is removed from the niche of the garbage collector, shaken off and cleaned with a brush attached to the device. nine0005

Threads and long hair wrapped around the central and side brushes of the vacuum cleaner can be easily cut off with the blade of the same accessory.

According to the illustrations in the user manual (recall that only a Chinese instruction was attached to our instance of Mijia 1T), all elements of the waste bin can be washed, drying thoroughly after washing.

You can also wash a fiber cloth for damp cleaning under the tap.

Our measurements

We present the results of testing the device according to our methodology, which is described in detail in a separate article. nine0005

The video below was filmed from one point with full coverage of the harvested area, while processing part of the video sequence was accelerated by 16 times. During the entire cleaning, the vacuum cleaner was turned on in automatic mode.

During the first eight minutes of cleaning, the robot circled the room in a “snake”, bypassing the obstacles placed, then made a circle around the perimeter, reported on the completion of the work and returned to the base.

The route of the device can be seen on the map from the application. The exact duration of cleaning from the start to the end signal was 7 minutes 55 seconds. During this time, the vacuum cleaner removed 90.5% garbage.

There was a noticeable amount of litter left on the floor, along the walls and around obstacles, so we decided to repeat the automatic cleaning two or three more times.

During the second cleaning, the vacuum cleaner almost exactly repeated its own route, bypassing the room in 8 minutes 24 seconds and increasing the amount of garbage collected to 95.5%.

The third cleaning cycle took 8 minutes and 6 seconds, during which the amount of garbage collected increased by another 0.8%.

We made sure that for all three attempts the robot moved along the same route, turning in the same places. The amount of uncollected debris for the third approach did not increase too noticeably (most of it remained around the central obstacles), and we decided to point out the vacuum cleaner’s shortcomings by turning on the zone cleaning mode. nine0005

After drawing a rectangular area in the middle of the test room, we turned on the vacuum cleaner.

The addition of the fourth stage improved the result: having passed through problem areas with a new route, the robot increased the amount of garbage collected up to 97.1%.

Most of the litter is still left at the central obstacle, it also remained at the baseboards. In the area around the base, we collected 0.6% of garbage.

We rate the overall quality of the cleaning as good, but the device definitely lacks randomness in the route construction algorithm. nine0005

When placed on the base after the end of the automatic mode, the device is charged in approximately 3 hours and 50 minutes. During charging, the base of the device consumes up to about 9 watts, while in standby mode, its power consumption is less than 0.1 watts.

The vacuum cleaner weighs 2075 g without installed modules, according to our measurements. The dust collector unit weighs 200 g, and the dry weight of the wet cleaning module is 210 g. The water tank of the latter, filled to the maximum, holds, according to our measurements, 235 ml. nine0005

Battery life with Wi-Fi enabled and maximum power level is approximately 110 minutes. The noise level during operation of this model is, depending on the selected suction power, from 58 to 65 dBA.

Conclusions

During practical tests, the Xiaomi Mijia 1T Sweeping Robot vacuum cleaner showed good navigation ability and good cleaning performance. Optical sensors of the device, operating in the visible range, help it to confidently navigate in space and maintain rectilinear movement, without going astray even on uneven floors. The only disadvantage of this technology is the difficulty of orientation in the dark: the robot needs daylight or artificial light to clean. nine0005

Among the advantages of the device, we include a well-functioning Mi Home application, which is the center of the ecosystem of this manufacturer. However, so far only the Chinese version of the program, which has problems with Russian localization, knows about the existence of this model.

Mijia 1T has tolerable, but annoying shortcomings in the cleaning algorithm: the vacuum cleaner tends to exactly repeat the same route. The absence of elements of randomness in the construction of the trajectory leads to uneven processing of the floor and the appearance of uncleaned areas of the surface during several launches.
