I remember how nervous and confused I came to Malta. And then I started going to the sea, swimming. I remember how it refreshed me, brought me out of some nervous state. Since then, I strongly advise all newly-made mothers to leave for warmer climes. This is useful not only for mom, but also for the child – we started bathing our son in the sea from two months old, and, you know, his first intelligible noun after “mom” and “dad” was “sea”.

Do you really have time to rest?
Of course! One day my son and I went to Cyprus together, without a husband. My son was a year and a month old. I remember how worried I was, but the desire to be in a subtropical climate took over. And I really got to relax! I built the chart like this.
We went to the sea about an hour and a half before our son’s afternoon nap. There we both swam, I played with him in the sand, we ate fruit. Then I put him to sleep right on the sunbed, on the beach, carefully sheltered from the sun. And here I had two or three hours of time “for myself.” I lay nearby, read a book, could go for a swim (I did not sail far and asked my neighbors on the sunbed to call me if my son wakes up, but this has never happened). Then the son woke up, we still swam and played, went home, ate, went for an evening walk – walked along the promenade, went to shopping centers, went to playgrounds. Of course, by the end of the rest, I felt tired, because I was without assistants, and sometimes I really want complete freedom, at least for half an hour. But in general, we had a great rest, swam and sunbathed.

Now our son is one and a half years old, and it has become even easier to relax with him. He already understands a lot, knows how to swim on his own, confidently follows you.

Travel experience

You run a rather informative instagram, you recently started a telegram channel about travel. What is your goal?
Thanks to my extensive experience of traveling and working in the hotel industry, I am aware of various nuances and travel hacks. For example, I know exactly what kind of service in which hotels I can expect, that I can demand how the hotel will behave in certain situations. Friends and acquaintances often asked me for advice on where to go, how to save money, where to find a ticket or a good price offer, which places and countries to visit, and so on. And in the end, I decided to share my knowledge with friends and everyone who is interested in my telegram channel. Every day I learn a lot of interesting information about travel, and sometimes it’s just brilliant information! For example, did you know that there are internships at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris? Or that there are creative camps in Italy where an artist can come to work and be provided with food and housing? On my Instagram, I reveal the life of our family, write about our travels, about what is happening to us.

What types of travel and what destinations do you recommend? Why?
I love Europe very much. Here everything is familiar to our eyes, everything is clear. Vacation options for every taste – urban tourism, vacation by the sea, ski vacation, cruise vacation. Of course, I would recommend Malta to everyone! I also really like Cyprus and Italy. I like Cyprus for the climate, I like the Cypriots themselves, there are a lot of things for children on the island. Italy is very diverse – no matter how many times I have been there, each time I discover it for myself in a new way.

We should also mention the cruise type of vacation. We discovered it for ourselves a year ago, and it was an unforgettable experience – every day a new city, new impressions, the all-inclusive system operated on the liner. Such a cruise ship is like a floating city, everything is there: shops, restaurants, children’s rooms, swimming pools, spa areas, sports, various master classes, live music, shows every evening. At the same time, cruise companies often have amazing promotions, and you can buy a cruise at a price of 30 euros per night – cheaper than a two- or three-star hotel!

Where would you like to go in the near future?
I have a dream to visit Christmas New York. I think this dream was inspired by American cinema. Even in the near future, my husband and I would very much like to visit Cuba – after the death of Fidel, his regime fell, and Cuba is gradually turning into a capitalist republic. I really want to have time to catch her originality and uniqueness.

Soviet intelligence officer George Koval infiltrated US super-secret facilities

Responsible officers of the US FBI acknowledged this, handing over to me the first two volumes of Koval’s investigation file from their archives.

By the way, on the title pages he is respectfully referred to as Georges Abramovich, which is unusual for Americans. After all, they do not use patronymics, and Koval was still an American by birth, although his mind and heart were completely devoted to Russia. In the US, of course, he was always called only George.

Handing me the dossier, the interlocutors assured me that it had long been declassified, but in their courtesy there was still some subtext. It seemed to me that they themselves were terribly curious about why Koval, who very timely left the United States at 1948, after the successful completion of a reconnaissance mission and on January 31, 2006, he died in Moscow, and was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Russia last fall.

The “finest hour” of the Soviet intelligence officer, who worked under the operational pseudonym Delmar, was his service in 1944-1945 in the so-called “Manhattan Engineering District”.

This name concealed highly classified enterprises and laboratories of the US military-industrial atomic complex, located not in the center of New York, but in more secluded places, including the cities of Oak Ridge (Tennessee) and the environs of Dayton (Ohio), where Koval entered. As far as is known, he was the only Soviet agent who managed to personally infiltrate these facilities, and he was helped in this by … the US Army!

Hoover’s note

However, first things first. On August 27, 1954, FBI Director John Edgar Hoover ordered his New York subordinates to open a separate “George Koval investigation file” in place of the former “unidentified person” file. The essence of the matter was defined briefly in the documents: “Espionage – R”, that is, presumably, espionage in favor of Russia.

One can only guess from the documents how the FBI found Koval. By the way, even after declassification, many banknotes were preserved in them. In particular, almost all personal names and titles are blacked out, so that even in the available papers one often has to guess something. But in any case, it is clear that one of the versions, initially actively developed by the FBI, was associated with the New York company Raven Electric, where Koval worked from about 1940 to 1943, apparently from the time of his illegal arrival in the United States from USSR and before being drafted into the army.

A Soviet defector told the FBI that in the early 1940s, an illegal Soviet military intelligence resident ran an electrical retail business in New York. Under suspicion, among others, was “Raven Electric”, and among its employees was found “a man named George Koval. ”

Three birthdays of the carpenter’s son

After that, apparently, the FBI detectives began to unwind the thread of a unique fate, in which many mysteries and ambiguities remain for them even now. Among them is even the official date of birth of J. Koval – December 25, 1913 years old In the archives of the city of Sioux City (Iowa), where the Koval family moved shortly before that from the Belarusian town of Telekhany, no corresponding registration records were found. But it was pointed out that a certain Louis Koval, or rather Kaval (a fuzzy entry was made by hand), was born there on January 22, 1912 in the family of carpenter Abe Kaval and his wife Ethel Sheniski, immigrants from Russia. The parents’ names are similar, the father’s profession and address in Sioux City are the same, but there was never any Luis in the Kovaly family.

According to all subsequent documents, Joe Koval had two brothers – the elder Isaiah and the younger Gabriel. They were all born in Sioux City and went to school there. In school documents and dated May 8, 1915, the official application of his father, Abram Berko Koval, for naturalization in the United States, George’s date of birth is indicated as December 25, 1914. Finally, on top of all this confusion, another option was discovered in the archives of the probation service (supervision of parolees) in Sioux City – September 25, 1914th.

Incidentally, the FBI investigators who had to open these archives unearthed an interesting fact along the way. It turns out that in September 1931, young George Koval was arrested in his hometown, and the local newspaper Sioux City Journal and Tribune even wrote about this.

According to the publication, our hero was detained because he, along with a group of like-minded people, “captured” the service committee of the local commissioner for the poor. They demanded that he find housing for two homeless women who had previously been evicted from the shelter. After the intervention of the local sheriff, the instigator of the unrest had to spend the night at the station. It was reported about him, probably from his own words, that the guy is 19years of studying law at a Midwestern university and providing legal assistance to the Council for the Homeless, described in the article as a “communist organization.” Meanwhile, in the registration card filled in during the registration of the drive, it was indicated, presumably, the real age of the detainee – 17 years.

In hindsight, the FBI collected a lot of other information about the “pro-communist” and “pro-Soviet” beliefs of the Koval family and their immediate family, including the father’s three sisters and their husbands. One of George’s classmates recalled that he “often talked about Russia, saying that a Utopia had been created for the Jews in Russia and that he and his family were going to return to Russia.” Another said that after leaving school, George went to study at the University of Iowa to study engineering in order, as he said, “to prepare for work in Russia. ”

In August 1930, George Koval and his uncle Paul Silver were delegates to the US Communist Party conference in Iowa, the former from the Young Communist League and the latter from the local party organization of Sioux City. This, by the way, was mentioned in the documents submitted at the same time by their vigilant fellow citizens for consideration by the special committee of the US House of Representatives to investigate communist activities in the country.

Graduate of the Moscow Chemical Technology Institute in “Harvard for the Poor”

In the investigation file, of course, there is no information about how the fate of Joe Koval in the USSR really developed. Only very recently it became known that he successfully graduated from the Moscow Institute of Chemical Technology named after D.I. Mendeleev and was even enrolled in graduate school, but instead received an unexpected invitation to serve in the Intelligence Directorate of the Red Army and became Delmar.

After a special training course, he returned to the US (the FBI still doesn’t know how he did it) with a mission to focus on getting information about the US chemical weapons programs.

Shortly thereafter, however, America finally entered World War II. And although the company “Raven Electric” actively knocked out deferrals for its “key employee”, introduced even to the board of directors, in April 1943 he was nevertheless drafted into the army. But as a result, he ended up not at the front, but in the classroom. Army personnel officers liked a serious young man with an incomplete higher engineering education and excellent results on an intellectual development test – and they selected him to participate in a project, the essence of which was hardly known to them at the time.

So Delmare became a student of the “special army training program” for a year at the City College of New York. Later, the New York Times wrote in an article about him that it was a “Harvard for the poor” and a stronghold of liberalism, from where, in particular, the notorious Julius Rosenberg, who was executed in 1953 along with his wife for “atomic espionage” in favor of USSR. As one of the informants told the FBI during the investigation, “liberal and pro-communist” sentiments also reigned in the army training group.

But Koval, according to all opinions, never entered into political discussions, although he did not specifically avoid them. Yes, and he spoke sparingly about his personal life: they say, an orphan, he grew up in the care of an aunt, except in the army, he was almost nowhere, there was not a lot of money. Everyone understood that the guy had drunk dashingly, and they didn’t meddle with questions, especially since at 30 he was noticeably older than most of the other recruits. So he was remembered by them mainly for his brilliant academic performance, good knowledge of the city, and even a skillful game of baseball, popularly loved in America.

After graduating from special courses in the summer of 1944, graduates were assigned to the main US nuclear centers of that time. Delmar was assigned to Oak Ridge, later transferred to Dayton. It is now known that factories for the production of nuclear fuel and components of nuclear weapons were located there. As the same New York Times explained with reference to experts, “the secrets of making a bomb may be more important than the secrets of its design.”

However, what exactly Koval did at his new place of work and what information he had access to, the FBI, if it did find out, did not immediately find out. Judging by the army documents, he was originally designed as a “mathematician”. But he eventually ended up in the Department of Radiation Safety as a radiometrist. Much to Hoover’s annoyance, over the years, experts interviewed by the FBI found it difficult to determine exactly what secrets could pass before the eyes and through the hands of their former colleague.

Memoirs of a Veteran

As already mentioned, almost all of these people are present with their testimony in the dossier anonymously, but there is at least one clear exception. This is one Arnold Kramish, who knew Koval both from joint studies in New York and from work in Oak Ridge. According to colleagues, they communicated quite closely.

Kramish, a veteran of the US nuclear program, is now retired. He lives in the suburbs of Washington and quite willingly shares his memories with journalists who are attracted to him by the posthumous fame of Delmar. It was he who was one of the main sources for the mentioned article in the New York Times, and with his light hand, details began to circulate on the Internet, according to which Koval drove around Oak Ridge in his own service jeep and everywhere had access there, which required radiation control.

I talked to Kramisch on the phone, and very briefly: he is in the hospital after the operation and he does not have time for long conversations. My interlocutor claimed that the military head of the Manhattan Project, General Leslie Groves, “did not trust the FBI and personally Hoover” and, in fact, did not allow FBI agents into Oak Ridge (“except that there were a couple of agents sitting here and there for formality”), because in the field of security, he relied not on them, but on military counterintelligence.

Kramish also believes that most likely the main achievement of the Soviet agent was the identification of work with polonium, which was carried out in Oak Ridge and Dayton. The very fact of using this element was, in his words, “one of the most secret aspects” of the Manhattan Project. By Groves’s special instruction it was forbidden to mention it in any open sources, and it remained a secret “for several more years after the war.” Accordingly, the interlocutor believes that the friend of his youth was “one of the most important Soviet spies.”

Russian historians now claim that Delmare’s reports suggested to the scientific directors of the Soviet atomic program the idea of ​​using a neutron fuse containing polonium. As far as is known, the first Soviet atomic bomb, tested in August 1949, had just such a fuse – just 4 years after the American one. According to official reports on awarding Koval the title of Hero of Russia and transferring his award to the Museum of Military Intelligence, the information he obtained helped to significantly reduce the time for the development and creation of domestic nuclear weapons, which ensured the preservation of military-strategic parity with the United States.

Asked how his former American colleagues feel about Koval now, Kramiš replied reservedly: “Of course, we thought about it a lot,” he said. “It is clear that he was deeply devoted to Marxism, the USSR, and so on. “, but in communication with us this did not manifest itself in any way. I think he considered himself a patriot, loyal to his new homeland. But he betrayed my country. And what to do about it?”

Goodbye, America

In 1946, “Technician 3rd Class” George Koval was discharged from the US Army “due to demobilization”. According to the military archives, the resignation was honorable, Delmare even had awards: medals “For Exemplary Service” and “For Victory in World War II”, as well as a stripe “For Service in the American Theater of Operations”. The certificate of dismissal noted that in terms of personal and service qualities he was characterized as “brilliant”, he did not serve outside the United States, was not under the tribunal and did not go AWOL.
