According to the 2010 Census, Elmwood Park has a total area of 1.91 square miles (4.95 km2). ² ), the whole earth. The current population is about 24,380 people. ^[4]

History

Elmwood Park was incorporated as a village in early April 1914 to prevent the annexation of the larger city of Chicago. Today, evidence can still be seen of a minority of landowners or farmers who voted to annex the city in 1915 on an odd piece removed from the northeast corner of Elmwood Park, which prevented the community from reaching a fully square, rectangular boundary. ^[5]

At the turn of the century, townspeople traveled west by train from the rugged concrete city for family picnics in “Elm Wood Park,” which was an ancient “Grove of majestic 180-year-old elms” found near 72nd Avenue. / Harlem and Irving Park Road. ^[6] Taking advantage of the park’s origins, the new cemetery was named Elmwood, while the nearest train stop to the cemetery and park at unincorporated Marwood/Ellsworth became identified with the official name “Elmwood Park”. In an era of unification pressure ten years later, the founding representatives of the village felt that the most ideal option would be to legalize the settlement after the shutdown and after the namesake elm, which is a native, native development of coastal “floodplain” tree species on the prairies.

There were 9858 households out of which 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.6% were married couples living together, 12.4% of women living without husbands, and 33.8% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.20.

In the village, the population was spread out: 21.9% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 16, 6% are aged 65 or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 women, there were 90.7 men. For every 100 women aged 18 and over, there were 87. 5 men.

The median household income in the village was $47,315, and the median household income was $58,358. Men had a median income of $40,634 compared to $28,667 for women. The per capita income for the village was $22,526. About 3.6% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.3% of those under the age of 18 and 6.5% of those aged 65 and over.

Lake Bluff is a village in Lake County, Illinois, United States. It is located on the north shore of Lake Michigan and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. As of 2010, the population was 5,722. ^[3]

History

The first family of settlers to claim land in the area that is now part of Lake Bluff arrived in 1836. They demanded 100 acres of land stretching from the lake west to the Green Bay Trail. In 1849In the same year, several residents left to seek their fortunes during the California gold rush. In 1837, William and Mary Dwyer claimed land north of the former Central School. They opened and operated a stagecoach and a tavern along the Green Bay track. Some of the other early settlers were Henry and Angelina Ostrander, James Cole and William Whitnell.

In 1855, the first railroad across Lake County was completed from Chicago across the county line. Henry Ostrander owned the land on which the depot was planned, and he agreed to donate the site if the depot was to be called “Rockland”. Therefore, this area, formerly known as Dwyer Settlement and Oak Hill, became Rockland, the only stop between Highland Park and Waukegan. Rockland had a post office and general store on Mowman Avenue with a small school and church located west of the railroad tracks near Green Bay Road.

In 1875, a group of Methodist ministers led by Solomon Thatcher of River Forest purchased 100 acres of lakeside land from Ben Close, the youngest son of the original settlers. The Lake Bluff Camp Meeting Association was formed and Rockland was renamed “Lake Bluff”. The association has designed a resort that will provide not only religious activities, but also social, cultural, educational and entertainment programs. From the outset, the Camp Meeting was successful in attracting notable figures of the time such as Frances Willard and Mrs. Rutherford B. Hayes. During the summer, visitors were drawn to Lake Bluff to enjoy the beach and gorges and take part in camp activities. A 10-acre lake in the city center, Artesian Lake, provided additional recreational opportunities.

The land was subdivided into 25-foot lots where “a cottage could be built within 20 days of purchase for $250.” The first hotel, Bluff Lodge, opened in 1876. By the mid-1880s, there were more than 30 hotels and boarding houses, as well as a large tent that could accommodate more than 2,000 people.

Lake Bluff was converted to a village in 1895. Charles Trusdell, the village’s first president, built his home at 115 East Center Avenue. Eastern School opened in September 1895 years old In 1904 a railway station was built and in 1905 the current village hall was built.

During World War I, Lake Bluff was hailed as “the most patriotic town in America” for the residents’ efforts to support the Red Cross and purchase an ambulance to be sent to France.

In the 1920s, Lake Bluff planned to join other North Shore suburbs in the race to attract new homes and growing families. New brick stores were added to the business block, and a large East School building was also built. However, at 19The Great Depression began in 29, and expansion plans never came to fruition. ^[4]

Bluff Lake is located in the North Shore area at 42°17′N 87°51′W / 42.283°N. lat. 87.850°W / 42.283; -87.850 (42.281, -87.849). ^[5]

According to the 2010 census, Lake Bluff has a total area of 4,057 square miles (10.51 km2). ²), of which 4.05 square miles (10.49km ²) (or 99.83%) occupies land and 0.02 km ²) (or 0.17%) – water. ^[6] It is bordered by Lake Michigan to the east, Naval Station Great Lakes to the north, Lake Forest to the south, and Libertyville to the west. The city is named for the prominent bluff overlooking Lake Michigan that extends across the eastern border.

As of the 2010 US Census, there were 5,722 people, 1,992 households, and 1,743 families living in the village. ^[10] The population density is 1492 people per square mile (575.9 / km ²). There were 2,178 housing units at an average density of 542.5 units per square mile (209.4/km ²). The racial makeup of the village was 92.05%. White, 0.58% African American, 0.10% Native American, 5.54% Asian, 1.29% Hispanic or Latino, 0% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races and 1.29% from two or more races. ^[11]

As of 2010, there were 2,178 households, of which 42.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 80. 6% were married couples living together, 6.3% were females, living without husbands, and 12.1% do not have a family. 10.2% of all households were made up of people living alone and 6.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.86, and the average family size is 3.21.

In the village, the population was spread out: 29.3% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 15.6% from 25 to 44, 27.4% from 45 to 64, and 14, 7% are aged 65 or older. The mean age was 44.8 years. For every 100 women, there were 92.5 men. For every 100 women aged 18 and over, there were 90.4 men.

The median household income was $114,521 and the median family income was $124,674. Men had a median income of $92,233 compared to $50,352 for women. The per capita income for the village was $54,824. About 0.7% of families and 1.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.6% under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those aged 65 or over.

Transportation

Road

US Route 41 passes through the western part of the village, and directly west of Bluff Lake is Interstate 94, both highways providing commuter access to either Chicago or Milwaukee.

In the summer of 2010, a wild turkey began to populate the corner of Green Bay Road and Route 176, capturing the hearts of the locals and inspiring a book called Turkey Town. ^[12] ^[13] The following year, another wild turkey was spotted on Highway 176. ^[14]

Scranton Avenue runs through the central business district and functions as a kind of “main street”. The local police station, fire station and town hall are located on East Center Avenue. Both roads lead from the city center to the lake.

Rail

Lake Bluff Metra Station

Until its bankruptcy in 1962 Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee The electric intercity rail line between the Chicago Loop and Milwaukee stopped at Lake Bluff. As of 2018 Union Pacific Railroad (formerly Chicago and Northwestern Railroad and later Chicago and Northwestern Transportation Company) ^[15] still passes through Lake Bluff. ^[16] This line, part of the Chicago Metra Commuter Agency, provides access to Chicago via Ogilvie Station and to Kenosha, Wisconsin (but no longer to Racine and Milwaukee as the Milwaukee Northwest Division used to).

Although not a passenger rail line, the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Outer Belt Line also has a route to Lake Bluff.

Education

Lake Bluff East Elementary School, originally known as “Lake Bluff School”, was the first school in Lake Bluff. At 1963 Lake Bluff West Elementary School was built for children living in West Lake Bluff (unincorporated school). Knollwood). In 1967 Lake Bluff Central Elementary School was built for students in north Lake Bluff. In the 1970s, the Western School was closed and given many other titles, and the entire system moved from geographic centers to class/specific class attendance centers. In April 2007, a referendum on the construction of a new school was passed by just 22 votes. As a result of the land swap with the park district, District 65 acquired land adjacent to the old Central High and relinquished land adjacent to the old West School. West School was sold in May 2007 for approximately $1 million, which was also the property’s minimum bid. New Lake Bluff Elementary School (grades K-5) opened September 28, 2009of the year. Lake Bluff High School (grades 6-8) also received additions and renovations. The middle school now has a portion of the original “Lake Bluff School” on display. East School graduating classes ran until September 2009. The cost of the new elementary school in Lake Bluff was approximately $20 million and 82,000 square feet (7,600 sq. ²). Lake Bluff High School was renovated in 2016. ^[17] with two new classrooms, a new library, cafeteria and Makerspace.

Arts & Culture

The Lake Bluff Historical Museum is the place to learn about Lake Bluff’s past. Their mission is to support the history of Lake Bluff by researching and preserving historical information, generating interest and sharing knowledge of local history, inspiring broad participation in activities that support this mission and embody the spirit and pride that characterize Lake Bluff. ^[18] The museum sponsors various programs and fundraisers that support its mission. Each year the Lake Bluff Museum of History organizes a “Ghost Walk”. Halloween to celebrate their scary story. This includes group tours of the city, led by residents dressed as ghouls, who tell stories of macabre happenings in the past. ^[19]

Village Green hosts many cultural events each year, including a Veterans Day flag-raising ceremony, lighting the gazebo (Christmas) and a farmer’s market every Friday in the summer. In the summer of 2017, pizza nights began to be held at a local coffee shop on Friday nights.

Each summer, Lake Bluff hosts Bluffinia concerts on the countryside. Groups from all over the United States come downtown to party. Musical styles range from classical 1920s to 1950s. Rock and roll, by the 1980s Pop Music. Residents listen to music on the village green, eat at local restaurants along Scranton Avenue, and drink at bars like Mavery Public House and Inovasi casual. The Bluffinia Concert is the second most attended and featured concert series in Lake County, Illinois behind the Ravinia Festival. ^{[ citation needed ]}

Each year, Lake Bluff hosts a notable Independence Day parade sponsored by the Lake Bluff Committee on July 4th with the support of American Legion Post 510. Many organizations and artists take part in the parade, including a performance by synchronized lawn mowers, the local Boy Scout troop and various other associations from across the North Shore. ^[20]

Samuel F. Dodds, who owned 80 acres (320,000 m ² ) of land on the site, purchased an additional 80 acres (320,000 m ² ) on behalf of the railroad company began grading work. Dodds owned the stone house that still occupies Lot 1 on Lena Street, and Dr. F. Voitheld owned a log house (which was later demolished) next to the station. At that time, these two buildings constituted the territory of the city.

Originally, the city had the shape of a parallelogram, spanning twenty-six blocks, totaling 304 sections. In the summer of 1853, the lots sold rapidly, at prices ranging from $50 to $150 each. On New Year’s Day 1854, a road was laid and wagons began running between the Freeport and Warren. The population began to grow, mainly due to the British and Irish. In 1854, about a dozen families lived in Lena.

In the summer of 1855, Reber, Cheney, and Dodds erected a three-story brick building at the corner of Railroad and Schuyler Streets. It was completed in the fall of 1856 at a cost of approximately $4,000. The building is still used by local businesses. The Panic of 1857 had little effect on the city’s growth, and rapid expansion continued until 1860.

As growth continued after the Civil War, the city’s first newspaper called Lena Star was founded in 1867 by Dodds’ editor. During the first year, the newspaper reported on a local fire and demanded that a water pump be installed in the city. Several fires broke out in 1868, and J. M. Shannon (who took over as editor of the newspaper) continued to call for a pump. ^[4] The Lena water tower was finally founded on May 15, 1868.

By 1870 the population of Lena reached 1295 people and her social and business community continued to grow. The Lena Fire Department was established in 1869 and officially met for the first time in 1870. Despite the presence of a fire station and a well, fires continued to haunt Lena. In the early 1870s, fires destroyed a warehouse, a stable, a village school, and several Lena houses. News from the Great Fire of Chicago in 1871 was alarming for the people of Lenno, and the fire of 1874 nearly destroyed the old railroad depot and freight houses. ^[4]

The local opera house, built in 1879, was pictured on History Channel show American Collectors in February 2010. The opera house, now renovated, was closed in 1938. ^[5]

Radio Station WQLF (102.1 FM) has a license for the city of Lena.

History

Free Niles bus at golf mill

Joseph Curtis settled in what would become Niles in 1827 and John Dewes followed in 1831. ^[8] The settlement was originally called “Dutchman’s Point” after the German immigrants who followed it, including John Planck of Hesse-Darmstadt (who sold whiskey to passing travelers and remaining Native Americans) and the Ebinger brothers of Stuttgart, as well as John Schadiger, Julius Perrin, John-Jackson Ruland (d. 1880) and Revolutionary War soldier John Ketchum.

Many people of Indian origin lived in the area; Chief Blackhawk reportedly often smoked the peace pipe with Christian Ebinger. Article 4 The Second Treaty of the Prairies du Chien, signed July 29, 1829, between the United States government and several chiefs of Chippewa, Ottawa, and Potawatamie, left certain tracts of land to persons of mixed American Indian ancestry. Among them were Billy Caldwell, Victoria Pottier and Jane Miranda. The land owned by these individuals eventually became part of the border of the Nile. ^[9] In the 1832 Black Hawk War, a group of Native Americans may have reached Billy Caldwell’s property as part of an attempt to regain land lost to the United States. Hostilities ended in 1833 and most of the Native Americans left immediately, moving west of the Mississippi River. ^[9]

Founding of the village of Niles and Niles

The Ebinger family settled near Milwaukee and Toohey Avenue in the early 1830s. John Ebinger was King William’s head gardener in Württemberg, Germany, but moved to the US (originally Ann Arbor, Michigan) when he was 62 years old. His eldest son Frederick left for Chicago and worked on a wharf or harbor by 1832, and was soon joined by his brother John Jr. and their wives, as well as John Plank. John Ebinger and his youngest son Christian (aged 21, recently married to the orphaned Barbara Ruhl of Stuttgart in 1834; both walked the route to allow their elders to ride) packed up and set off to join them, only to find that Chicago was too marshy to engage in agriculture. ^[10] After their horse stepped on a rattlesnake and died shortly after crossing the North Fork of the Chicago River on the Indian Trail to Milwaukee, the Ebingers built a cabin on Milwaukee and Harlem Avenues and claimed 80 acres of land. The older Ebinger brothers (one of whom married the sister of the wife of the commanders of Fort Dearborn) soon joined them, as did the Plancks. John Planck soon sold his house to Mr. Phillips, who opened a shop and became the area’s first postmaster. Christian Ebinger or his son of the same name (born 1835 and first white child born in the area, d. 1879) became the first priest to be ordained in their German Evangelical Association, and served as village collector, town councilor and warden of the poor (from 1852–1865) and road commissioner, and also kept seven children alive. ^[11]

There is no clear indication of the origin of the name “Niles”. A Chicago Tribune article from 1929 opined that the title referred to Niles Weekly Register , a popular newspaper published in the 1820s and 1830s by ardent nationalist (and abolitionist) Quaker Hezekiah Niles outside Baltimore, Maryland. His son William Ogden Niles published the newspaper from Washington, D.C. until it ceased publication in 1849.year; The Odgen family had a long association with Chicago. ^[12] Another opinion is that the name “Niles” was named after Niles Construction, which made most of the building at the beginning of the city’s founding. ^{[ citation needed ]} Alternatively, soldiers from Niles, Michigan reinforced Fort Dearborn during the Black Hawk War, and later may have sent word of rich farmland to the north. The first three settler families arrived from Niles, Michigan with troops or had relatives at Fort Dearborn. Early History Cook County, Illinois reported that every two weeks a half-breed Indian went to Niles, Michigan, for mail. By 1834 Chicago and Niles were connected by a bandstand twice a week. ^[13] The North Branch Hotel was built in 1837 and the White House Tavern in 1847. By 1839 an itinerant German preacher was visiting Dutchman’s Point every two or three weeks. ^[14]

Niles Township was organized at a meeting at the North Branch Hotel on April 2, 1850, one year after John Odell donated land at Milwaukee and Harlem Avenue to build a second school (built by John Ketch, who was an activist Methodist Church) and four years after Joseph Curtis returned to England. The blacksmith Benjamin Lupton returned to England to marry, then returned with his fiancée to Dutchman’s Point in 1840 and remained the settlement’s blacksmith for the next two decades. ^[15] Residents later stated that the name of the village was chosen before a public meeting. The following year, an ordinance was passed in the borough regulating the frantic flight of cattle. By 1858, Henry Harms had a store on Harms Avenue in downtown Niles, another locality in the borough that was later renamed. Skokie. ^[15] By 1890 there were six saloons, two blacksmith shops and three churches in the area.

Growth after World War II

Along with neighboring Skokie and a few other suburbs, Niles is partly located in Niles Township, from which it takes its name. The village of Niles was officially incorporated into the state of Illinois on August 24, 189.9 years old At that time, 500 people lived in the village. Niles, as well as neighboring communities. Niles became the first community in Illinois and one of the first in the United States to establish free ambulance services at 1946 year. ^[17] A few decades later, a free bus service was introduced, linking residents to local shops, government offices, and transportation facilities (shown).

In 1964, under new Mayor Nicholas B. Blaze, Niles was named “All the City of America”. Niles grew by selectively incorporating nearby unincorporated areas of Cook County, the most important for tax revenue purposes being the area that became the Golf Mill Shopping Center. Its population peaked at 1970 year and amounted to 31,432 people. Blas, the son of Greek immigrants, grew up in Chicago. Bridgeport area and a graduate of law and business from the University of Notre Dame, moved to Niles in 1959 and first worked as a claims adjuster for the Allstate Insurance Company. He would have been Niles’ longest-serving mayor, but resigned as a result of a scandal in 2008 that led to him being federally prosecuted for passing the insurance business on to his friends. Ironically, Blaz was first elected at 1961, when he upset Frank Stankovic, a former motorcycle cop who won election first as a village clerk, then won the election and was re-elected to the post of mayor for two decades before passing the gavel to a young upstart. ^[18] Blas’s New Era Party waged a widespread campaign against corruption (the police turned a blind eye to the local gambling houses and prostitution that thrived near the Chicago border) and builder favoritism. ^[19]In his nearly five decades as mayor, Blaze created free buses, a new village town hall, a senior center and fitness center, and a new police station, as well as jobs for nearly 500 municipal employees. ^[20] Blase resigned in 2008 due to federal allegations that he was involved in a premium refund scheme. ^[21] A few months later, he pleaded guilty to mail fraud and tax evasion and admitted to forcing local businesses to buy insurance from a friend’s agency in exchange for a share of the commission, raking in over $420,000 over a period of over 30 years . ^[22] ^[23] In 2010 Blaze, then 81 years old, was sentenced to a year and one day in prison. ^[24] ^[25] After serving his time – first in federal prison, then in an asylum, and then in home confinement, he returned to Niles. ^[26] In 2011, his name was removed from the square in front of the village building and the post office. ^[27] Blaz died in 2019. ^[28]

The village of Niles has several departments of social services. These include the Niles Family Services (Counseling and Social Services), the Niles Nursing Center, the Niles Teen Center, and the Niles Family Fitness Center. In a 2016 consultative referendum, the villagers voted to continue funding these social services.

In 2011, Niles Teen Center and Golf Mill Mall were awarded Gold U.S. Maxi Award from the International Council of Shopping Centers for successful and ongoing cooperation. Niles Teen Center is a recipient of the Bright Ideas 2010 initiative. Bright Ideas is an initiative that recognizes creative and promising government programs and partnerships. Police Department

The Niles Police Department provides 24/7 service and protection to the villagers with 55 sworn officers, 36 support officers, 2 special services officers, 4 operations officers, 30 community service officers, 10 civilians and 17 school security guards. The Police Department is proactive in its efforts to enforce federal, state, and local laws through multiple law enforcement strategies.

In 2018, the Niles Police Department created a new riot initiative that assigned one of fourteen strikes to each police officer to increase familiarity and communication between residents and officers.

Fire Department

Niles Fire Department began service February 19, 1912. In 1946, the village began providing free ambulance services, ahead of all other communities in Illinois. In 1962, the Niles Fire Department appointed its first fire chief, George Pasek. Currently, the department has a rating of 3 according to ISO (from 1967).

The Fire Department provides the following services: Fire Prevention, Fire Fighting, Fire Investigation, Emergency Medical Services and Transportation, Special Technical Rescue, Hazardous Materials Response, and Public Education. The current staff consists of 52 jurors. The department operates two fire engines, two ambulances, one gangway/truck and one command vehicle from two posts.

The Niles Free Bus is a free bus system that runs within the village of Niles at no charge to passengers. The free bus runs continuously from 6:30 to 17:00. on weekdays and from
Niles Leaning Tower, a small copy of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, is a notable sight and a source of pride for the inhabitants of Nils. This landmark is seen in the film’s first cut in the Chicago area. Wayne’s World . Niles’ Leaning Tower has also been featured in many national magazines, including Oprah’s “O” magazine in 2014. ^{[ citation needed ]} It is located next to the local YMCA (appropriately called “Leaning Tower YMCA”). Throughout the summer, several concerts are held here, covering a wide variety of musical forms.
Another notable attraction is the Tam O’Shanter Golf Course, now owned by the Niles Park area. From 1941 to 1957, the courses hosted the All American Open on the PGA Tour. In 1964 and 1965, the courses hosted the Western Open. ^[40]
St. Adalbert’s Cemetery, the largest in the Archdiocese of Chicago in terms of burials, ^[41] resting place of German immigrants Fredrak Fraske (1872–1973), who was the last surviving Indian War veteran. ^[42] St. Adalbert’s is also the site of the Halas family mausoleum and the final resting place of George Halas, former head coach of the Chicago Bears.
The world headquarters of the Bradford Group, a major collectibles company, is located on Milwaukee Avenue.
