Children’s Land: the main thing is that the kindergarten is loved by children and their parents

Visiting “Reklama” is Oksana Anisimova, the owner of the Children’s Land kindergarten chain, which is popular among the parents of our community. Recently, the 10th kindergarten was added to the network, this time in Glenview. We asked Oksana about the new kindergarten and also talked about her approach to business.

Oksana, please tell us about the new garden first.

The garden is located in the Chicago suburb of Glenview, on Milwaukee Ave, not far from the popular appliance store Abt. Excellent location, it will be convenient for many parents to bring children on their way to work. Big parking lot. The garden building looks like a real castle, with turrets and weather vanes. Inside there is a modern room with bright rooms for each group, a hall with a piano for music and dancing. Nearby is a spacious, well-equipped playground. I can talk a lot, but it’s better for parents to come and see everything with their own eyes, to feel the atmosphere of love for children reigning in our country, to talk with me, with educators.

Immediately the following question: what languages do your caregivers speak with children?

It depends on what the parents want. Our teachers speak English, Russian, Ukrainian and other languages. Therefore, we are ready to accept those children whose parents prefer to speak English with their child from the first day, and those who want to keep their native language and want their child to speak, for example, Russian or Ukrainian.

Let me tell you about the example of our garden in Villing, which is already 10 years old. In accordance with the wishes of parents, we have both Russian-speaking and English-speaking nurseries (6 weeks – 2 years old), groups with children 2-3 years old and 3-4 years old. When children are 4 years old, this group is called Preschool, English becomes the first language of communication for everyone, regardless of what language the child spoke before. But we continue to support the second language, we learn poetry, sing songs, develop colloquial vocabulary, etc. Programs in Russian and English are organically combined.

I plan to do the same for the new garden in Glenview. Moreover, if there is a request from parents, I will be happy to organize a Ukrainian group, because now a lot of families with children have come from Ukraine.

What do you say to parents when they ask why they should choose your kindergartens?

There are many reasons. Let’s start with additional classes that we conduct in all kindergartens. It can be music, dancing, yoga or art classes. In classical American kindergartens, this usually requires a separate payment from the parents. We do not have. We arrange chic matinees where our children sing, dance, and read poetry. And they do it with pleasure! We take children on excursions to various interesting places. So the child learns new things from us, has fun, communicates with friends, runs around on the playground in the fresh air, eats with appetite and sleeps soundly, goes home in a good mood in the evening, and in the morning in the garden – a full life of a happy child.

Let’s talk about nutrition – for moms this is always a hot topic . ..

I can confidently say that we have the best food. Our motto is healthy eating. Always eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Every day, a freshly prepared hot lunch is required: soup and a main course. Nothing like junk food, only quality products. We do not even give juices to children, we prefer kefir, milk. Water is always available. Two hot breakfasts: porridge and, for example, scrambled eggs. We do not use white bread, only whole grain. We use salt to a minimum. The menu is usually scheduled a month in advance, and this information is always available to parents. There are standard and vegetarian versions of the menu.

What if the child has allergies?

A process has been developed on how to feed these children. Parents cross off the menu what their child cannot, and if necessary, food from home can be brought on this day. Since we work with young children and it may be the first time that an allergy occurs, we have eliminated nuts, fish and seafood from our menu – the things that most often cause problems.

I would also like to mention cleanliness – I have very high requirements for the condition of rooms, kitchens and other premises. We are clean – like at home.

I’ve heard that your kindergartens are called “children’s kingdom”…

Yes, and that’s another reason to choose Children’s Land. All buildings built by us look like real castles. Thanks to this, as well as the general joyful atmosphere, children believe that they are little princes and princesses from a good fairy tale. Our kids are really good.

The conditions you have created for the children are impressive. Let’s talk about training now. What are you teaching your students?

Since children come to us from infancy, we first teach them the basics, teach them how to use the potty, eat a spoon and fork, hold a pencil, cut, glue, sing, dance, etc. We leave children who already know how to write in English, read, count, that is, completely ready for school, moreover, their level of knowledge is much higher than the average for Illinois. The kindergarten program in our kindergartens does not begin with learning the alphabet, as in a standard school – our children already know it by that time. We start reading and writing.

How much a child needs to learn! Tell us about your teachers, educators

My task is to find people for whom working with children is not just an appropriate education, but also a vocation. And to work with the team in such a way, to ignite everyone in such a way that they fall in love with each child and the work they are doing. So, as a rule, if a person came to work with us and felt that he was in the right place, then he stays with us for a long time. People who do not have patience and vocation simply do not linger.

Are all educators required to undergo state-required training?

Of course. There are state requirements. But honestly, in our business, training happens every second. Then one child fell, another cried, the third refused to eat, and so on. So life training goes on all the time.

Children spend a lot of time in the garden. If you do not take into account the night, then often more than at home with your parents. Therefore, in addition to the fact that the child should be well-groomed, fed, he should be psychologically comfortable in the garden …

Yes, children can stay with us for 11 hours, from 7 am to 6 pm. And psychological moments are very important. The task is to make the child fall in love with kindergarten. The task is to make him want to come here. So that he can find friends here. Children get used to kindergarten in different ways, some are brave, some are shy. So we need an individual approach to each child, everyone needs to find their own key. The child should love the kindergarten, and the parents should be calm and confident that the child is happy here.

You have been in this business for a long time, tell me, have parents and children changed over the years?

Fifteen years ago, when I started, many families used babysitters, mothers often either did not work or worked part-time. Today, many cannot afford it. Now in a young family with a child, as a rule, both parents work, and the child most often goes to kindergarten. So the parents, yes, have changed, the conditions have changed. And the children remained children, the process of their growing up has not changed.

Do you think a child needs a kindergarten at all, if, for example, there is a possibility not to take him there?

A must. I myself have four children, and I speak not only in terms of business, but also as a mother. Children in the garden begin to work, get used to the rules, in the future this will bring good results. Kindergarten is, first of all, a daily routine, a system, and this is what forms us as a person. Children after kindergarten are much easier to adapt at school, and in life in general. Another plus of going to the garden is that children learn to make friends, because in our time it is not so easy to make friends.

Oksana, tell us how it all started, why did you choose preschool education for your business?

I am an elementary school teacher by education. Before coming to America in 1994, she managed to work for five years at a school in Kyiv. When we thought about business, I had three children of preschool age, so the topic of kindergartens was very close. Plus my education. And when my husband and I saw that a kindergarten was for sale, we decided to buy and start a business. Things went well, and gradually began to expand. Now we have ten kindergartens. About a thousand children come to us every day.

Big complex business. Who helps you lead it?

Yes, in fact, this is such a well-established mechanism that works almost imperceptibly to outsiders: accountants, marketers, maintenance, etc. Each kindergarten has its own director, who is responsible for its functioning. My husband George deals with external business issues, I am more focused on internal processes, I work with staff, with parents.

Working with people is not easy

Yes, psychologically, I give all my best – to talk to that one, to cheer up that one, to gently point out a flaw to one parent, to tell one parent about the achievements of his child, to another one again to explain what will be at the matinee, etc. etc.

All our parents know that at any time you can call me, ask a question, and I will answer even after hours. Yes, I will mention that I help low-income families who bring a child to us complete the necessary paperwork and receive assistance from the state in the form of a subsidy for kindergarten.

In conclusion, let’s go back to the recently opened kindergarten. If parents have questions or want to come see and get to know each other, what should they do?

Call 847-376-8009, come, I will personally tell and show everything. If it is difficult to get out on weekdays, I can meet on weekends. I understand that this is what a kindergarten is for – to help organize family life so that parents can work calmly and be sure that their child is in safe hands at this time.
