Daycare centers need workers like you to watch children, prepare snacks, and keep kids occupied while their parents are at work. There are plenty of employers in the child care industry. Bright Horizons, Goddard School, Kindercare, and many other child care companies are hiring new employees to staff daycare centers across the country.

Basic Skills and Requirements: The child care industry represents an ideal setting for employment seekers, both entry-level and professional, to exercise teaching, assisting, planning, and administration abilities. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the child care industry employs more than 1,000,000 workers, and trends point toward a 14% employment rate increase between 2012 and 2022. Basic job titles like child care worker and teacher’s assistant do not typically necessitate college degrees; however, applicants must demonstrate high levels of responsibility and organization. Workers may find additional entry-level positions in child care as cooks, drivers, custodians, and secretaries. Facility director and teacher titles may necessitate completion of higher education, health and safety certificates, and continued yearly training in child care industry standards.

Jobs in Day Care

Legal Hiring Age and Other Laws: State laws greatly influence the qualifications applicants must possess in order to work at child care facilities. Many states demand entry-level workers possess high school diplomas and meet minimum age requirements of 18 to obtain child care worker and teacher’s assistant positions. However, some states allow institutions to hire on associates as young as 16 or even 14 years of age. Depending on state legislation, employees may need to obtain basic CPR or first aid certifications before commencing work at child care centers. Stipulations and processes vary, but all states require applicants submit to pre-hire background checks. Once hired, required tasks involve supervising, interacting, and tending to the general physical and emotional needs of infants and children.

Child Care Responsibilities: As mentioned above, child care industry professionals such as facility directors and teachers encounter longer lists of qualifications. Teachers must hold education degrees in order to create lesson plans to adequately meet the physical, mental, and emotional needs of children. Teachers may also need to possess health and safety certifications in case of emergencies. Facility directors and administrators maintain responsibility for entire institutions. Managerial tasks such as hiring, firing, training, and scheduling prove just a few of the duties industry professionals handle. Upper-level workers also oversee entire operations, ensuring buildings meet safety standards, approving curriculums, instituting new programs, and handling customer issues.

Average Working Conditions: Child care jobs often prove strenuous, as workers stand on foot for long hours at a time, stoop to pick up and carry children, and exercise alertness throughout shifts. Overtime also proves common for full-time workers in the child care industry, as parents sometimes arrive late to pick up children because of work conflicts or other unforeseen events. Though child care jobs pose arduous duties, employers typically offer discounts on services as well as healthcare and future planning benefits for employees. Child care centers generally reward part-time, entry-level workers with hourly pay between minimum wage and $10.00. Some centers offer entry-level associates full-time work schedules with salaries spanning as low as $19,000 and as high as $29,000 per year. Full-time industry professionals often enjoy salaries ranging from $30,000 to $50,000 depending on job title, experience, location, and size of the institution.

Daycare Job Descriptions

Teacher Assistant – Also known as a teacher aide, a teacher assistant typically remains an employee without a degree in early childhood education but assists teachers with daily lesson planning, implementation of such lesson plans, and interacting with both children and parents on a daily basis. Teacher aides retain responsibility for properly supporting child development, utilizing curriculum correctly, and working in teams in order to provide the best care possible. Teacher assistants must also actively meet both state and federal guidelines in order to work with children, such as health and safety certifications and passing numerous background checks and drug screenings. While teachers typically need to possess a minimum of an Associate’s degree, teacher assistants generally only need a high school diploma or equivalent. Most states require assistants to show progress toward higher education, though achieving further degrees may not prove necessary in order to qualify for hire. Teacher assistants tend to make between minimum wage and $10.00 an hour to start, with the possibility of earning more with tenure, additional certifications, and further education.

Driver – Drivers safely transport children in either vans or buses between locations necessary to complete daily routines, such as from the center to school locations, field trips, and on rare occasions, to homes. Employees must possess a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record, an understanding of all state and local regulations, and typically must also possess current training in first aid and CPR. Drivers should hold a high school diploma or equivalent and typically must stand at least 21 years of age to meet hiring criteria. Usually offered as part-time or seasonal employment, drivers may earn up to $13.00 per hour.

Cook – The cook retains responsibility for preparing nutritional meals, regularly in concordance with state and federal food prep guidelines. An employee in the cook position may also need to possess a general understanding of making meals according to plan, within the company budget, and typically in large portions. Additional responsibilities may include maintaining inventory, cleaning kitchen and dining areas, and managing waste materials properly. Cooks should hold a high school diploma and stand at least 18 years of age to receive consideration for hire. Kindness, caring, and energetic personalities tend to fill positions as cooks well, as interacting with children, staff, and parents may occur with regularity. Flexibility in schedule may also assist candidates in standing out above other job seekers, as cook positions may fall into seasonal, part-time, and full-time categories depending on need and by individual company discretion. Cooks may earn minimum wage to start, with the possibility of earning more over time, experience, and certification.

Some states have more requirements, such as requiring staff to have certifications in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid.

Some employers have additional requirements, such as the CDA credential offered by the Council for Professional Recognition. Candidates need to pay a fee, take coursework, obtain experience in the field, and be observed while working with children. This credential needs to be renewed every 3 years.

Special assessment of the working conditions of a kindergarten

Here we will consider the conduct of a special assessment of the working conditions of a kindergarten. As in organizations of various fields of activity, the process of preparing and conducting a special assessment of working conditions in a kindergarten or other preschool institution has its own characteristics and differences. Even counting the number of jobs subject to special assessment (SOUT) for different kindergartens can take place in different ways and have its own characteristics depending on the construction of the labor process. And also there have been some changes in the methodology of work, this is due to the abolition of certification of workplaces.

Carrying out a special assessment of working conditions in kindergarten

The first step in this process is to determine the composition of the commission on the part of the employer, which will participate at all stages of the work and sign the final documents. The composition of the commission and the work schedule are approved by a special order for a special assessment. Usually in a preschool institution, the chairman of the commission becomes the head (manager) or the person who performs his duties. And members of the commission are appointed employees related to labor protection or trade union work, these are usually the heads of the household (supply manager), chairmen of the trade union committee, authorized labor protection, and in the absence of such, as is usually the case in kindergarten, these functions are assigned to the senior educator or an accountant. It is important to remember that the number of members of the commission, together with the chairman, must be made odd, as required by law.

The schedule and stages of work are usually approved by an addendum to the order. The schedule approves the number of jobs for which SOUT will be produced, it may not coincide with the number of employees working in these places. There may be similar positions in the same working conditions, or employees in the same work area doing work on the same equipment, such as security guards, canteen cooks, maintenance workers, integrated building services workers, cleaners, janitors and other. Such positions may be combined into one workplace or similar. Further, the head of the institution determines the certification laboratory and concludes an agreement.

The experts of the certifying laboratory determine at each workplace the parameters of the labor process that may affect the health of the worker. In a kindergarten, such parameters include illumination, intensity and severity of the labor process for auxiliary workers, thermal radiation for cooks and other kitchen workers, noise and local vibration for a building complex maintenance worker and a janitor if he uses a snow blower.

Special assessment of the working conditions of a kindergarten teacher (SAUT)

Quite often the commission has questions related to the calculation of the number of jobs for junior and senior teachers. Since some of them work in the same group, respectively, in the same room and in the same conditions, others in another similar or completely different room. In this case, it is necessary to deal with the number of groups in kindergarten. To study the equipment and features of the labor process of each educator, with the compilation of the so-called “photo of the working day.” Having studied which it will become clear whether they are in similar conditions or in different ones. Further, it will become known exactly how many jobs of educators are subject to special assessment. Working with young children of preschool age requires a high degree of responsibility and attention. The further future of the child, his participation in the life of society, as a separate whole, depends on how correctly you lay the foundations for perceiving the world in him. Therefore, it is worth focusing on the organization of the work of the educator.

Preschool institutions have always been the center of increased attention from the regulatory authorities. This area is responsible, so the work in it should proceed most smoothly, and, most importantly, safely for both children and the workers themselves. The organization of work of the educator in the absence of compliance with state standards in the field of labor intersects in parallel with the insecurity of the conditions of stay of the pupils of the institution. Any imperfection in the organization of the work of an educator can negatively affect the well-being and health of pupils.

Most of the staff of preschool institutions are women. Male caregivers are extremely rare. Legally, the labor rights of men and women are equal. But, despite this, the individual characteristics of the female body are still taken into account by labor legislation.

One of the most relevant forms of labor protection at the workplace of a kindergarten teacher today is the certification of workplaces (AWP, – ed.). Its goals are important – to identify the influence of adverse factors in the working environment and eliminate them. They can be achieved only with a qualitative and in-depth analysis of the working environment.

The certification procedure is enshrined in the Order of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation dated April 26, 2011 No. 342n. In accordance with it, the employer is obliged to conduct the next certification once every five years, unscheduled – within 60 working days after the commissioning of a new workplace, technological process and unscheduled – after a mandatory measure to improve working conditions (for example, workplaces , which were classified as dangerous during the assessment). “Changes have taken place since December 12, 2012, read more here.”

When assessing hygienic working conditions, the admissibility of the influence of working environment factors is revealed in accordance with Guideline R 2.2.2006-05. The harmful factors that may be present in the workplace of the educator include: physical and biological. Among the physical factors are: microclimate (high or low air temperature, humidity, air velocity of the working area), insufficient illumination, vibration, noise, radiation . Biological factors are expressed by the presence of microorganisms, bacteria, pathogenic microorganisms in the working environment. This factor can often be found in kindergartens, where sanitary norms and rules are not observed. In case of diseases that take on large scale, kindergartens are transferred to quarantine. There is also a third group of factors – chemical factors (chemical substances and mixtures), but in preschool institutions, due to close attention from the control and supervisory authorities, they practically do not occur.

The work of an educator is nervous , intense, therefore, the class of working conditions, when assessing the severity and intensity of work, is most often harmful. During the work shift, they have to perform physical, sensory, intellectual, emotional stress when working with children. Such a factor of tension as the monotony of loads is absent at the workplace of the educator.

Assessment of injury risk is carried out on objects, devices, tools that educators use in their work. It also checks the compliance of the employee’s training on labor protection and safety.

There are no special requirements for caregiver’s protective equipment. The only thing is that he needs to have a dressing gown or other special suit and removable shoes (SanPiN 2. 4.1.2660-10).

If the working conditions at the workplace are found to be harmful during the assessment, educators are assigned compensation in the form of increased wages, additional paid leave or a shorter working week (Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of November 20, 2008 No. 870).

An educator is considered an engineering and technical worker, and usually in this specialty for the purposes of certification of workplaces, only illumination is measured. It is also found in educators and junior educators, with a special assessment, similar jobs, but quite rarely. In case of similarity, 20% of the total amount is taken in random order, but not less than 2. For example: if there are 10 educators, then only 2 jobs are measured, and if there are 20 educators, then 4 are already measured. As a rule, in kindergartens, jobs for junior educators and educators are considered similar. That is, if 10 caregivers count as two, 20 caregivers count as four. But measurements are made in all places where the work of educators (groups) is carried out. For example: if 10 teachers work and are interchangeable with each other in 10 rooms and groups, then measurements are made in all rooms where the teacher or junior teacher works. In kindergartens there are professions with harmful and dangerous factors. As a rule, such professions in kindergartens include cooks, laundresses, a driver (if any), building maintenance workers. On average, surcharges for harmfulness and danger range from 4-16% of the employee’s salary. Cooks in kindergartens can be from 3-5 people, along with the chef. Just like with educators, it is considered as one workplace. Measurements on them are made throughout the kitchen and workshops, and thermal loads, physical, illumination and others are measured.

Also in kindergartens there is a profession of a laundry worker (laundress). He also measures the intensity and severity of the labor process, illumination and chemical indicators. In kindergartens, there are also many professions related to the education of children, for example, a teacher-psychologist, physical education instructor, speech therapist teacher, music director. In the staffing table, these professions are not allocated to full-time jobs, like 1.75, 0.5, etc., but measurements for attestation purposes are made at workplaces. That is, if a physical education instructor has a working rate of 0.5, then this is still one job. If this is a rate of 1.75, for example, for a music director, then this is also one thing.

As a rule, there are no accountant positions in kindergartens, and this functionality has been shifted to the district department of education management. Lately, there have been difficulties with financing in preschool institutions. But conducting a special assessment of working conditions in educational institutions (kindergartens, schools, Suza, universities) is a mandatory procedure.
