Features of American kindergartens – All about life in the USA

How do American kindergartens differ from Russian ones? How do they approach raising children? How are they inferior to domestic kindergartens, and what could Russians, on the contrary, learn from them? And most importantly – do the children themselves like it there?

Most of the American kindergartens are paid, and their attendance is quite expensive. Prices, of course, may vary, but the average is about 10 thousand dollars per year. The opportunity to go to free kindergartens appears in children only from the age of 5. Such kindergartens are called Kindergarten and are a kind of preparatory stage before the school. In New York, children can visit the garden for free, starting at 4 years old under the Free Universal Pre-K program. However, aftercare and the bus that takes children to kindergarten, as a rule, are paid.

Children spend most of their time in the kindergarten according to a strict schedule (exercises, breakfast, various activities and games, walks, reading, lunch, daytime sleep), and on the after-school they are already freer. Children are “walked” in different kindergartens in different ways: the state ones usually have their own playground, and quite a large one at that. In private kindergartens, children are simply taken to a neighboring yard or park. In general, playgrounds in kindergartens there are very, very infrequent.

The situation is about the same with breakfasts and lunches. Some kindergartens are equipped with full-fledged kitchens, their staff includes cooks who prepare soups, cereals and other food for children, and somewhere they manage only corn flakes with milk – the rest must be brought by yourself. Parents also usually bring bed linen – after all, in many kindergartens, children do not sleep in cribs, but simply on mattresses laid on the floor. At the same time, they do not undress and often do not even take off their shoes. By the way, normal beds are found, as a rule, in Russian gardens.

However, American gardens cannot be reproached for neglecting cleanliness and order: reminder signs are hung everywhere about what to clean up after yourself, wash your hands before eating, etc.

The fact that kindergartens perform the function of “preparatory schools” is very noticeable. They have really real classrooms with reading and math books and small libraries. There is also a lot of things for games – illuminated tables, toy mini-kitchens, various musical instruments and costumes, special tables for playing with water and sand.

Parents can call the kindergarten only at certain times. Basically, parents learn about the child’s life in kindergarten from special folders where homework and all correspondence are placed (reports on curricula, various notes, requests, questionnaires, etc.)

Each child in kindergarten is given some small duty – for example, help set the table, keep a weather diary, hold the door, tell everyone what date it is today, and the like. Duties change weekly, so that all children have time to repeatedly visit each “role”.

Delinquent children are mainly punished with “time-outs” – they put them on a bench for a while and remove them from playing with other children. Usually such “timeouts” do not last long – a few minutes, but they are still effective. There is also a reward system: three circles usually hang on the wall – yellow, red and green. They have plaques with the names of the children on them. Which circle your sign will hang on depends on your behavior. The names of the most hooligans are on the red circle, the “middle peasants” – on the yellow one, and the exemplary ones – respectively, on the green one.
