Costs Associated With a Day Care Center | Small Business

By Denise Sullivan

If you are starting a day care center, take some time to lay out all potential costs before beginning your operations. This will help you avoid expensive last-minute surprises. Your costs will depend on the size of your day care center and the amenities you plan to offer. For example, after-school care may only require you to serve snacks to the children, while all-day care would require at least one full meal plus snacks.

Facility Costs

  1. Your facility must meet all local standards for day care design and construction, such as handrails, widened doors for disabled children, electrical outlet covers, child-proof cabinet latches, and stair guards. Estimate costs for any electronic entertainment options you will be providing for the children, such as televisions, video game consoles and DVD players. If your day care center will have an outdoor area, you will also need to build fences and install playground equipment. Include basic operating expenses such as rent, utilities, insurance and property taxes. You may also want to install kitchen appliances, purchase furniture, and set up storage cabinets, so get estimates on all such costs.

Licenses and Permits

  1. Check your local laws for the licensing and permit requirements in your area. You will usually need at least a business license and tax identification number. Some states may also require a day care license, surety bond, background check, CPR certification or medical clearance. These items may need to be renewed periodically, so include these costs in your budget for future years.

Supplies

  1. Include a monthly budget for cleaning supplies such as soap, paper towels, baby wipes, toilet paper, band-aids, changing pads and disinfectant. You will also need to replace broken or worn out toys and refill arts and crafts supplies as they are used. Food is another significant part of a day care center’s budget. You may be able to get financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Child and Adult Care Food Program. You must apply for this voluntary program with the state agency responsible for your area.

Toys and Equipment

  1. You may also be mandated by the state to purchase certain child care equipment, such as high chairs, cots and cribs. The required number of each item depends on the size of the center and the number of children it may hold. You will also need accessories such as sheets, blankets and napping mats. Budget for toys that will interest kids of various ages and both genders, such as puzzles, blocks, books, board games, dolls, toy cars, action figures and dress-up clothes.

Staffing Costs

  1. If you have employees, you will also have additional costs for staffing, such as wages, employee benefits and payroll taxes. Take into account any other benefits you are offering as incentives to attract employees, such as retirement plan contributions or health club memberships. Depending on your state’s laws, you may also be required to pay for licenses or training classes for your employees.

The Inside agency team has prepared a large material on kindergartens in Dubai. Preschool institutions here are divided into three groups.

Nursery – Nursery – accepts children from a few months to 3 years. Here all classes are held in the form of a game. Children are told about the world around them, taught to brush their teeth, tie their shoelaces. The guys go to yoga, ballet, swimming pool and gymnastics.

Kindergarden 1 (kindergarten) – an analogue of the senior group, here they prepare for the school day. For kids from 3.5 to 4 years old, they conduct creative and developmental classes.

Kindergarden 2 is similar to the preparatory group. Toddlers from 4 to 6 years old teachers teach writing, reading and counting.

Nurseries and kindergartens in Dubai are not a compulsory stage of education. Non-working parents can take care of the child on their own. However, the advantage of visiting the kindergarten is that here children receive high-quality preparation for school: they learn to count, solve problems, develop thinking and creative abilities, and socialize.

The local Ministry of Education does not maintain an official rating of kindergartens, as, for example, in the case of schools (we wrote a separate article about schools in Dubai).

How Kindergartens Work in Dubai

Kindergartens operate under various national and international programs.

For example, there are British kindergartens with the EYFS educational program and American kindergartens with the NAEYC system.

A number of institutions teach according to the Italian program – Montessori and Reggio methods, there are also Russian children’s clubs where classes are held in Russian. According to the educational guide Edarabia, there are more than 200 kindergartens in Dubai.

Each institution independently forms a training program, practical exercises, interactive games, additional sections, cost and duration of the child’s stay.

The most common training programs are the British EYFS and the Italian methods of Montessori and Reggio . They practice an individual approach to the child, creating conditions for independent development and socialization, when the teacher acts not as a mentor, but as an assistant.

As an example, let’s look at how a kindergarten costs $14,200 for three terms (the kindergarten works like a school). This school is Mastermind Nursery & Kindergarden . Every day children

  • learn languages - English, Arabic, French;
  • go in for sports – swimming, gymnastics, ball games;
  • are studying music, including playing the violin.

In addition to the basic education that prepares the child for the American curriculum, parents can take additional (music, math, languages). Look at the photos that the kindergarten publishes on its social networks.

Campus for children is decorated in the style of Van Gogh and Shakespeare. Also, a swimming pool, sports grounds, indoor and outdoor playgrounds, a library, a music class, and a gym were made for the kids.

As stated on the website of the kindergarten, the philosophy of the institution is learning through play. In addition, employees strive to gently instill a love of learning.

Teachers themselves are trained and committed to the principles of Linda Darling-Hammond (Stanford University), one of the world’s leading experts in teacher professional development.

Kindergarten accepts children from 8:30, and already at 13:00 the institution closes.

How much does kindergarten cost in Dubai

Kindergarten and nursery school fees in Dubai can range from $1,600 to $15,700 per year. Prices depend on the services of the institution, meals, uniforms, transfers and additional classes.

Usually kindergartens operate on the basis of secondary schools, and their daily routine is very similar. Therefore, the beginning of school life for children is very comfortable, in a familiar environment.

How to choose a kindergarten: where to start, where to look for information

The rating of kindergartens can be viewed on the Edarabia educational directory website, as well as read reviews on the Chatru. com forum website. They will help you navigate when choosing an institution.

  • Determine the criteria that are important for you: curriculum, cost, location of the kindergarten, age of the child. Sort kindergartens according to these criteria.
  • Explore the kindergarten’s official website and social networks. Many actively maintain pages.
