Description of the cedar pine

Siberian Cedar is an evergreen giant of the pine family, reaching a height of 35–40 meters. The diameter of its trunk is about two meters, but in nature there are trees with large volumes. The bark has a dark gray hue, in young trees it is smoother, in old trees it is cracked and located on the trunk in small plates. Fresh shoots are brown and covered with light and long hairs. Cedar is a long-liver , its life span can be from 400 to 800 years.

The crown of the tree is dense and spreading, it may consist of several peaks. Coniferous needles are 12-15 cm long, they are painted in dark green with a blue tint and are arranged in small bunches of 5 pieces. Cedar needles contain many useful components: amino acids, iron, essential oils, vitamins and minerals. Thanks to them, specific substances are released into the air – phytoncides, which have a bactericidal effect.

The root system of Cedar is very unusual in its appearance and functioning. It consists of a root rod, which is short (about 45-55 cm), from which lateral roots branch off, covered at the ends with small and very thin roots, similar to hairs. Mycorrhiza or fungus root can grow on these processes. If the composition of the soil is completely suitable for the cedar pine, then a large root system begins to develop on the rod, which grows deep into the ground and ensures the stability of the cedar.

Tree seeds are pine nuts with a pleasant taste and high nutritional value. They ripen in cones, which are divided into male and female, as the Siberian pine belongs to monoecious dioecious plants. Female cones are usually located on the upper shoots of the crown, and male cones are located in its middle part. Young cones are light purple in color, over time they become brown in color and oval in shape with tightly pressed scales on the surface. Pollination occurs when the wind blows. The fruits are able to ripen within 13-15 months.

Mature cones are large, conical in shape and dense scales, they can reach 10–15 cm in length and about 5–8 cm in width. 12–15 mm and 5–10 mm in diameter. At the end of summer, after full ripening, the cones begin to fall to the ground. One tree can produce about 1300 buds, each containing 50 to 100 seeds. Fruiting in Cedar usually begins when he is 50-60 years old.

Rules for growing Siberian Cedar

For proper growth and proper development of the root system, Cedar requires nutritious soil rich in potassium. The soil should not contain nitrogen, as it negatively affects the well-being of the tree. The tree grows very slowly and often other plantings begin to appear near it, so it is necessary to periodically clear the area around so that the Cedar is spacious. It is best to plant it as far as possible from birches, spruces and various shrubs. The distance between the Siberian pine and neighboring trees must be at least 9-10 meters.

Cedar reproduces well from seedlings and it is preferable to choose those that have been grown in special containers. This planting material has a complete root system, thanks to which small trees will begin to grow fully within a year after planting. Before diving into the planting hole, carefully straighten all the roots so that they are not woven or bent. The soil for a young plant should be light in composition, so you can add a little sand to it.

In order for the cedar pine to give a rich harvest, the soil around it must be periodically mulched. Thanks to this procedure, the roots of the tree are enriched with oxygen, become protected from severe frosts, are nourished with useful substances and develop faster. Mulch should be added to the soil each year as it stimulates the growth of extra roots needed to nourish the tree.

Planting Siberian pine

Cedar is usually propagated in two ways – with the help of seedlings and seeds. Basically, gardeners use coniferous seedlings for this. Their age should be no more than five years, the height is about 100 cm, and the diameter of the trunk is 1–3 cm. You need to choose seedlings very carefully, the trunk should be undamaged, with a large and moist earthen ball on the roots. It is best to purchase seedlings that are in a spacious container. It is necessary to plant a young tree in early March.

Selecting a suitable site

In order for the coniferous giant to be comfortable and cozy on your site, first of all, you need to choose the right place for planting. To do this, pay attention to the following aspects:

• Lighting. It is necessary to transplant a tree in a place where there is a lot of daylight. Despite the fact that Cedar can grow well in the shade, good lighting is necessary for the full ripening of the future crop. And one should also take into account the fact that air containing harmful gases is very harmful to it, therefore, it is necessary to plant a cedar pine far from industrial factories and large highways.
