Impact on a child’s attachment / Feature articles / Blog / Egolution
An important question is whether an infant or child can form a secure attachment to mother and father if he constantly leaves them. We know that most babies establish secure attachments with their fathers, even though fathers usually leave for work every day. Therefore, it is obvious that regular separation does not prevent the formation of a secure attachment.
Still, there was enough cause for concern from early research that psychologist Jay Belsky raised the issue in a series of articles and talks. Combining data from several studies, he concluded that there is some risk of insecure attachment in infants attending a day center up to 1 year of age compared with those who are raised during the first year at home.
Subsequent analysis confirmed Belsky’s conclusion. For example, summarizing data from 13 different studies that included 897 infants, Michael Lamb noted that 35% of infants who were cared for at least 5 hours a week by someone other than their mother formed an insecure attachment compared to 29% of babies who were exclusively under the care of the mother.
Here the opinions of psychologists differ considerably. Some psychologists, based on the data obtained, came to the conclusion that the day center itself increases the likelihood of forming an insecure attachment. Others have pointed out that most of the existing studies include so many conflicting variables that it is impossible to come to a firm conclusion. So perhaps the problem is not with the day center itself, but with the low level of the center.
Perhaps the answer to the question lies in the selection process itself. Working mothers differ in many respects from non-working mothers. These differences are even more pronounced when it comes to single mothers, mothers who prefer to work rather than stay at home with their child, or mothers who find childcare burdensome. Therefore, any risk of developing an insecure attachment cannot be unequivocally attributed to the experience of the day center, rather than to other factors.
Here is a wonderful example of how argument and disagreement can often lead to very good scientific research: 25 researchers from 14 different universities, including all the main protagonists of the dispute, in 19In 1991, they began to design and implement a very large study that was designed to answer all these questions. They selected over 1,300 infants and their families for the study, including African American and Hispanic families, mothers with primary and higher education, single parent and parent families.
When the children were 6 months old, the researchers made another visit to each house, again ascertaining the mother’s level of depression and her opinion of the child’s temperament. During this visit, they also observed mother-infant interactions during play and assessed the quality of the overall parenting environment in the home using a standardized instrument. In these observations, the researchers paid particular attention to the mother’s level of sensitivity/responsiveness to the infant. We know that this quality is related to the security of attachment.
At the age of 15 months, they additionally visited the child’s family, reassessing the conditions of home education and directly observed the mother and child during the game. Each pair was also invited to the laboratory where mother and child participated in a series of episodes of the unfamiliar situation procedure.
