How the Bunny and the Bear Cub searched for winter

This fairy tale is not a fairy tale at all, but one day in the life of little curious animals. These kids are like ordinary boys and girls, only they live in the forest. They are curious and cheerful, noisy and mischievous. And they have the usual children’s questions. It happens that dad or mom will tell you why and where. But it’s so boring. Therefore, sometimes these children themselves try to find answers. Such a story happened with two forest dwellers: Bunny and Bear cub.
That morning, Bunny woke up early and stretched. Mom and dad, brothers and sisters were still snoring. Their proximity was warm. The hare lay down a little more and cautiously jumped out of the hole that served as their home. Its walls and floor were lined with twigs and down. The dawn was already breaking, in some places in the lowlands there was fog, and huge drops of dew hung on the blades of grass.
The rays of the sun played, reflected in the dewdrops, and the Bunny could not resist, jumped around the old stump, under which there was a hare’s house. Fun seized him, and he decided to take a walk to the stream, to see if it was covered with ice. Bunny has never seen ice. Only dad told me that winter would come soon, snow would fall and the stream would be covered with ice, and then completely freeze. And my mother added that the bunny’s fur coat would become white as snow. In a few fervent strong jumps, Zaika ended up at the stream and was surprised to find that the stream was still the same, murmuring, as it was yesterday. Cool water licked the pebbles and shimmered in the rays of the rising sun. Maybe it has already snowed? thought Zaika. He had never seen snow either, his first winter was approaching, and these expectations were new. Carefully looked around. But there was no snow to be seen, although the grass had withered, it was still green, cones lay in heaps between the pines, the trees swayed with multi-colored branches.
There was a crash on the other bank. Bunny himself did not notice how in one jump he ended up behind the trunk of an old thick-set spruce. He pressed his long ears to his back and pressed himself into the ground between two thick roots.
Cracking repeated. Mom often frightened the children with stories about a lynx, and Zaika was more afraid of this insidious predator than fire.
Someone went out to the stream, then Bunny heard splashes of water and someone’s bursting laughter. It was like a child’s laugh, and he dared to peek out from his hiding place.
Little Bear was playing in the water. They knew each other, the bear cub was also born this summer, and they had already met several times. How could one expect danger from this fluffy mischief-maker. The bunny jumped ashore.
– Hello, Little Bear! Zaika was the first to say hello.
– Hello! ‘ the clumsy toddler replied. It was soaring from him and it seemed that the Bear cub wrapped himself in fog while still in the forest and brought it with him.
– Do you know if it’s already winter?
– Probably not yet. Mom says we’ll go to bed when it comes.
– Have you seen snow yet?
– Probably not yet. I don’t know what he is. Mom says that at this time the snow is already falling, but it is still gone. And winter doesn’t come.
– I’m very interested in what kind of winter it is!
– Me too! I know what to do! At the edge of the forest, it’s not far, there is a tall oak tree, let’s climb it and see if winter is coming!
– I can’t climb trees. And I’m afraid quite a bit – dad will scold when he finds out that I myself went for a walk.
– Don’t be afraid, Bunny, we’ll go together, only back and forth, no one will notice.
Bunny jumped around, as if wondering if it was worth it, and agreed – after all, curiosity is a terrible force. The bear cub climbed ashore, dusted himself off diligently, and they headed for the oak.
The autumn forest breathed dampness. It rained almost every day. The wind became stronger and colder – every year, by autumn, the south breeze lost the fight and gave way to the north, prickly and gusty. Animals and birds, each in their own way, prepared for the coming winter. Finches and robins sang their songs and flew off on tour to warmer climes. Only magpies still tried to break the silence with a thunderous rattle, yes, as if in response to them, the woodpecker knocked on the trunks. Here and there. Squirrels and chipmunks stuffed caches with provisions. And hedgehogs warmed their nests with fallen leaves for the winter. Even the trees prepared for winter in their own way – a warm layer of cork grew under their bark. White-trunked birches, ash and slender lime trees, black elms and red-yellow maples began to shed their leaves and did not make noise like in summer. Fallen leaves serve as a blanket for the trees, preventing the ground around the trunks from freezing. The air was filled with the rich aroma of mushrooms and rotting leaves. And in places where spruces, firs and tall pines grew, the smell of pine needles was carried.
Animals traveled through such a forest. They walked along the path, then crossed a clearing and went deeper into the forest again. The trees surrounded them now more densely, now less often. Dear Little Bear started a conversation.
– Do you think, Bunny, when we grow up, will we know everything?
– Of course, Little Bear!
– And where do the birds fly? And where does winter come from?
– Of course, Little Bear!
– But it seems to me that adults are no longer interested.
– Of course, Little Bear!
– Bunny, are you not listening to me at all?
– Of course, I’m listening, Little Bear. Is it interesting what you already know?
– You’re probably right, – said Little Bear and paused, assimilating a simple hare truth. And then he added: – How boring to be an adult!
– Not at all! – decided to argue Bunny. The forest is always interesting and fun. Jump-Jump!
The little bear did not keep up with the big-eared leapfrog. How can it be – at the same time it is no longer interesting and always interesting? But he did not have time to find out.
Under a hazel bush, friends heard a crunch and someone’s rumbling. The Brave Little Bear went around the bush and saw the Badger under it. The badger ate nuts.
– Hello, Uncle Badger! – Bear cub greeted politely.
The Badger silently crawled out from under the bush, looked around, carefully measured the Bear cub with his eyes and asked:
– Hello, Bear cub, are you walking without a mother?
– Yes, Bunny and I are looking for winter.
Then the Badger also noticed the Bunny.
– Hello to you too, Bunny!
– Hello, Uncle Badger! – repeated after the Bear Cub Bunny. He hadn’t seen a badger yet, the black stripes on his head and his solid, stocky body were eye-catching.
– Why do you need winter? Have you never seen it?
– No, – the friends answered in unison. – We want to look around from the height of the old oak that grows on the edge, maybe winter is already near?
– I myself wonder where she disappeared to. It’s time for me to hibernate too, badgers, like bears, sleep in winter. In the afternoon I am going to rest in my hole, but while it is still early in the morning, I will accompany you.
Then they went together. We passed through the ferns, bypassed the impenetrable thickets of wild cherries. Suddenly Badger stopped them. He gestured to a hollow near a fallen birch. All three hid there and hid. A heavy tread was heard not far away, and then rapid breathing. The little bear peeked out from under the birch. There was a wolf on the trail! It stretched from nose to tip of tail and looked like a shot arrow, strong paws carried it at an easy trot. The bear cub was not used to being afraid, and respectfully looked after the retreating wolf. The hare clung to the Badger in fear and, for reliability, closed his eyes. How his little heart was beating!
The wolf has long disappeared among the trees, but the friends were in no hurry to leave their hiding place. When the danger nevertheless passed, Badger explained:
– It’s good that the wind is in our direction. Otherwise Gray would have sensed us, bad luck then!
How quickly Bunny got scared, just as quickly forgot about the wolf. He jumped onto a fallen birch, ran several times from a chipped stump to the top of his head and back. Badger and Teddy Bear only had time to turn their heads, so quickly did the Bunny do it. And so, on the next lap, our eared brave man stopped and sat down on his hind legs, his ears folded by themselves.
– Oh! – all that Bunny managed to squeak. The badger was afraid that the wolf had returned. He turned slowly. Above them towered a giant – Elk. From below, it seemed as if he was tall and wide, like a mountain! With the onset of winter, moose shed their antlers. But this giant was gifted with horns of extraordinary beauty, spread wide to the sides. They swayed like the branches of a huge tree, following the movements of the elk’s head. It was clear that there was nothing to be afraid of the wolf, Elk, and the bear would not have coped with such a giant.
– What are the little ones doing here without supervision? – thundered from above.
– I’m an adult badger! – the striped animal immediately corrected Elk.
– We are looking for winter, – the Bunny and the Bear cub vied with each other. “We never saw her.
– I see that you are still small, first-winterers. Winter cannot be found, it is not a tree in the forest.
– And we are just going to the old oak, which is near the edge, we want to look from it, maybe winter is already near?
– When winter comes, you will see it everywhere: the trees will dress in snow coats, the blizzard will cover all the holes and minks, the day will become short, and the night will be long, rivers and lakes will be covered with ice. It is difficult to find food in winter, because the animals prepare for it in advance, make supplies, some in the hollow, and some under the skin.
– And that’s true, – Bear cub grinned and patted his furry belly. “Since I’ve made my supplies, it means that winter really will come soon.
– Of course, soon. Yes, only you, Little Bear, will lie down in hibernation, and you will not see anything. And you will wake up in the spring, when the heat comes again, and the drops will ring.
– Especially since I have to look at the winter before I fall asleep! Let’s go soon! – the Bear cub turned to his comrades.
– Be careful! – Elk admonished them on the road.
The sun has already risen high, and friends hurried forward.
The oak appeared from afar. Its branches flickered between the trees. Finally, the animals came to the edge, and he appeared in all his grandeur. The trunk of the oak tree was of immense thickness; Zaika thought that several hare houses could be built in its roots. Around the oak, the ground was covered with acorns like a carpet.
Badger as an adult gave the command:
– You, Bear cub, climb up, and you, Bunny, look at both! It’s already day-to-day, I’ll lie down, rest, if anything, wake me up right away.
With these words, the Badger crawled under the nearest bush, crushed some leaves under him, and immediately fell asleep.
The bear cub climbed the trunk, clinging with its claws to the soft gray-brown bark. Reaching the lower branches, he sat down to rest. The branches of the oak were so strong that the Bear Cub freely placed himself on one of them.
– Can’t see it yet? – He heard the voice of Bunny.
– Nothing to see, – and climbed further, remembering that a lot of time has passed, my mother probably missed him and is now looking for her son.
The oak seemed to him even bigger from here than from the ground. Several times the Little Bear stopped, took a breath, and finally reached the fork at the very top. The wind here was quite strong and the Bear cub even began to sway. He looked in one direction: there, as far as the eye could see, stretched his native forest. Among the half-naked branches of deciduous trees, the tops of infrequent pines stuck out, in some places the hearths of spruce forests were green. In the distance, the sky was blue, with clouds moving at different speeds across it. Those that were slower were like feathers – long with thin petals. White and gray heaps are quite another matter! That cloud over there looked like Uncle Elk, that one looked like a raspberry bush. And this… It reminded him of his mother. The bear cub again remembered that he needed to hurry. And he turned in his saddle the other way.
Something unimaginable appeared before his eyes. The forest ended almost immediately, behind it there was a field, it spread along the hill down to the ravine, willow thickets could be seen in the ravine, and behind the ravine … At first, the bear cub even thought that it was an anthill. Small stumps, behind them a little more, flashed and glittered in the stumps, small beetles swarming between the stumps. Despite the fact that it was all so far away, Little Bear clearly heard the noise that this outlandish action was making. In places, bare tree trunks protruded between the stumps. But there were no branches, and thick black smoke poured from the tops. The little bear took a closer look. These were not stumps. And not beetles. What is it then?
The bear cub saw the city.
The city consisted of houses, they were of different heights and different colors. The cars gleaming in the rays of the sun, with which the streets were full, reminded Bear Cub of hordes of bugs. The chimneys of factories and boiler houses pierced the building. Rare groups of trees made up parks and squares. The city was the exact opposite of the forest. Even the birds in the city lived their own, special ones – pigeons. City birds do not need to fly to warmer climes for the winter, because you can always keep warm and find food where a person lives.
A white mist hung over the city. The clouds were lost in it, through its veil it was impossible to see the blue of the sky. The little bear noticed how a bird took off from the side of the stumps, and a bird began to approach very quickly. The roar with which she flew was even stronger than her mother’s. It was an airplane. Here even the Bear Cub was frightened.
“We need to go down,” he thought, and rushed down.
They were waiting for him at the bottom. The badger had already woken up and was telling the Bunny a story.
Once upon a time, the badger’s great-grandmother was still small, ducks flew south across the lake beyond the forest. They landed on the water, rested, fed and continued on their way. Time passed, and the ducks stopped flying to this lake. Grandfather Badger said that they began to make a stop at another lake, beyond a distant forest. Rumor has it that ducks now fly even further, but this is no longer known for sure.
– Everything changes, ducks fly south on a different route, winter comes later every year. Nature itself is changing.
Little Bear was left a little, he slipped and landed softly right between the Badger and the Bunny.
– Well, what is there? – the curious hare started up.
Little Bear did not know what to say to his companions. He did not find suitable words and answered simply:
– No winter to be seen. The beetles are crawling.
– Well, let’s wait, she will come, – Badger reassured the kids. – It can’t be that she didn’t come.
By the time the animals returned home, the parents were seriously frightened and searched the entire forest around in search of children. The bear went around all the clearings where the Bear cub liked to play, and loudly called him. But her joy knew no bounds when he returned, so she did not even punish him. The bunnies looked under every bush where their beloved Bunny could hide and were also incredibly happy when he returned. Only Badger kept quiet that he was looking for winter with the animals, he was so afraid that he, as an adult Badger, would be scolded the most. Although he was not much older than his friends.
When Bear and Bunny returned home, they explained to their parents that they were looking for winter, but they never found it. Adults told the kids that winter is not so easy to find.
