How much does a live-in nanny cost?

When it comes to hiring a live-in nanny, there are a number of things to consider. First and foremost, you need to decide if having a live-in nanny is right for your family. After that (and after finding the right person), you need to determine an acceptable live-in nanny salary. But spoiler alert: The latter decision shouldn’t be all that difficult, as the cost of a live-in nanny doesn’t differ much from the cost of a live-out nanny.

“Whatever the market rate is for live-out nannies in your area, you can expect to pay the same, or a few dollars more per hour, for a live-in nanny,” says Michelle LaRowe Conover, lead educator at Global Nanny Training. “And like live-out nannies, live-in nannies must be paid an hourly rate at or above minimum wage, though most nannies expect far more.”

From taxes to overtime, here’s everything you need to know about live-in nanny costs.

How much should you pay a live-in nanny?

The cost of a live-in nanny is on par with the cost of a live-out nanny — or, as LaRowe Conover says, a few dollars more per hour. While a number of factors will influence a live-in or live-out nanny’s rate (more on this shortly), Olivia Fountain, operations manager at the domestic staffing agency, Household Staffing, notes that the live-in nannies who are placed through their company generally make between $25-$30 an hour, with their working hours generally being from around 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. or 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The company places nannies nationally, but it’s worth noting they generally work with higher-income families.

To get a better idea of what a nanny will cost in your area, use our babysitting rates calculator. As a quick example, a nanny in Brooklyn, New York currently will earn about $20 an hour, while a nanny in San Antonio, Texas will earn about $14. 75.

Here are some basic examples of typical live-in nanny rates based on location, according to recent Care.com data.

Current live-in nanny rates for top cities*

CITY HOURLY NANNY RATE
Seattle, Washington $21.50/hr
Brooklyn, New York $20.00/hr
Washington, DC $19.25/hr
San Diego, California $19.00/hr
Portland, Oregon $18.50/hr
Denver, Colorado $18.00/hr
Atlanta, Georgia $18.00/hr
Chicago, Illinois $17.25/hr
Phoenix, Arizona $17.00/hr
Minneapolis, Minnesota $16.75/hr
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania $17.00/hr
Charlotte, North Carolina $16.50/hr
Orlando, Florida $15.50/hr
San Antonio, Texas $14. 75/hr

Other factors that can influence a nanny’s rate (live-in or live-out) are:

  • Years of experience.
  • Number of kids.
  • Ages of kids.
  • Expected duties.

How does the cost of a live-in nanny compare to a live-out nanny?

A live-in nanny salary may be on par with a live-out’s, but there are a few differences to keep in mind. For one, in addition to their salary, you’re including “room and board” (which means you need a clean, safe, suitable place for them to live). While, technically, you can deduct a small amount for this, LaRowe notes that “most nannies will not look favorably on essentially paying a family for employment”and in some places and instances, it’s illegal.

In Massachusetts, for example, employers are not allowed to deduct room and board from a household employee if the job requires them to live in your home. If the nanny wants to live in your home, but is not required, you can deduct $35 a week.

“Many people are under the impression that live-in nannies earn less than their live-out counterparts — this simply is not true,” explains LaRowe Conover. “Live-in nannies are typically paid a premium because of the flexibility and reliability they bring to the table. While it is often assumed that by deducting room and board, parents can save by hiring a live-in nanny, in practice, that just isn’t the case.”

Each situation is different, but other expenses that may accompany a live-in nanny are:

  • Food.
  • Cell phone.
  • Higher utility bills.
  • Car.
  • Worker’s compensation insurance coverage.

Are live-in nannies paid overtime?

Live-in nannies must be paid for every hour worked — “including times they are not allowed to leave the home or are on call,” according to LaRowe Conover — but in most states, due to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), live-in nannies are not entitled to overtime pay.

“However,” LaRowe Conover adds, “in some states, live-in nannies are entitled to overtime if they exceed a set number of hours per day or week.”

For instance, in Hawaii and Maryland, live-in employees are to be paid overtime for anything over 40 hours a week, whereas in New York, live-in nannies are to be paid overtime if they work over 44 hours in a week.

Other states have their own live-in nanny overtime rules, as well. To find the most up-to-date information, check out our list of nanny tax and payroll requirements by state.

What are live-in nanny work hours?

Live-in nanny hours are generally the same as live-out nanny hours. While a live-in nanny undoubtedly offers more convenience than a live-out, they’re not “on 24 hours a day,” notes Fountain. Each family and live-in nanny need to decide what works best for them and put it in their nanny contract.

Fountain also notes that, generally, live-in nannies don’t get up with babies during the night, as their tasks are more aligned with a live-out nanny than a night nanny.

Do you pay live-in nanny taxes?

Yes! Families are required to withhold taxes from household employees that earn over $2,400 in a year, in addition to paying household employment taxes of their own. If taking care of taxes and payroll feels like a daunting task to you, consider having Care.com HomePay take care of everything for you.

How Much Does a Nanny Cost?

There are many options for child care these days, and since parents have other baby-related costs in addition to child care, they’re often inclined to find the cheapest option. However, just as with baby gear, the cheapest option is not always the best one.

Parents must consider many things when determining the best type of child care for their baby, and oftentimes, they conclude that a nanny is their top choice.

But how much does a nanny cost? What is the average nanny cost per day or per hour?

There are no set answers to these questions because many factors determine how much a nanny is paid. However, armed with some information about the current going rates for nannies, you’ll be able to find excellent candidates for the all-important job of caring for your child.

How Much Does a Full-Time Nanny Cost?

Just as is the case with any child care option, it’s vital that you know upfront what a nanny will cost so you can plan accordingly. There are several factors that work to determine what your cost will be.

Some of these factors include:

  • The area in which you live
  • How many hours/days each week you will need the nanny
  • What the specific duties of the nanny will include
  • The background and experience of the nanny
  • How many children will be cared for by the nanny
  • How far the nanny will have to commute

Different areas of the country have different average nanny costs, just as they have various cost-of-living averages.

Considerations to Determine Nanny Costs

Some nannies are hired to remain at the child’s home for the duration of each shift, with no extra duties included.

Others are hired to take the child outside to play, bathe them when needed, take them to parks and playdates, and more. They may have scheduled and specific play times with stimulating baby toys or other specific tasks. These duties all should influence a nanny’s pay.

The cost of a nanny should directly relate to their background and level of experience in child care, just as with any other job, position, or career. A nanny who is just out of high school with no prior experience should not expect to earn as much as one with a college degree in child behavior who has been in the field for 25 years.

The number of children that the nanny will be charged with caring for also heavily impacts the cost of a nanny.

While it makes sense that child care for three children would cost more than care for one, normally, the cost of one child is not tripled for three children. Usually, a nanny offers a discount on the higher overall cost for the care of multiple children.

How Much Does a Full-Time Nanny Cost Per Week?

According to the 2021 Cost of Care Survey by Care.com, the national average cost of a nanny is $612 per week for one child and $654 per week for two children. This assumes a 40-hour full-time workweek.

How Much Does a Nanny Cost Per Hour?

According to the same 2021 Cost of Care Survey, the national average nanny cost per hour is $15.30 for one child and about a dollar an hour more for two children.

This number means it may make financial sense to opt for a nanny over day care, especially if you have two or more children.

How Much Does a Nanny Cost Per Day?

The average nanny cost per day is $122.40 for one child and $130.80 for two children, assuming the nanny works five days per week and eight hours each of those days.

Additional Considerations When Determining How Much a Nanny Costs

If a nanny is willing and able to help with household chores like laundry or even meals for the family, it’s standard to add another $1–$2 to their hourly rate.

The best nannies are actively engaged with the children they care for instead of relying solely on TV programs for entertainment. As such, it’s fairly standard to add $1 onto the hourly rate for nannies who go the extra mile to really care for your child as if they were their own.

A good nanny will spend time encouraging your child’s mental and physical growth and development. This time can include playing with musical toys, baby gyms, sensory toys, water toys, and physical activity toys.

One steep cost many parents have is all of the baby gear they need for their child as they grow. Renting is an excellent way to drastically cut costs while still exposing your child to the best baby gear available. To learn more about renting premium baby gear, visit the Loop website!

Night babysitter – “light” in the window. Responsibilities and cost of night babysitting11

Your browser is out of date. Please update your browser to IE9 for better browsing experience.

Some children have very restless sleep, and it is difficult for parents, after a sleepless night, to work or take care of the child. Therefore, in such cases, they resort to the services of a night nanny. Our agency will help you choose a reliable night nanny in St. Petersburg . Most often, such a specialist is invited to babies under 2 years old. But older children also need to find a night nanny if no adults are at home at night.

Babysitting starts at 8 pm and lasts until 8 am. The recruiters of our agency pay special attention to candidates for the vacancy “ Night Nanny “. After all, she will spend a lot of time with the child, and the baby, waking up at night, will see her, and not her mother. Such a person should be able to work at night, so this work for a woman will be the main one. nine0005

The level of education when choosing a night nanny is not important, the main thing is proper child care. When meeting with the nanny, pay attention to whether she will show interest in the child, whether she will come to the meeting on time.

For your convenience, recruitment specialists will first check the compliance of the applicant’s resume with reality, as well as recommendations. The competence of our nannies has been tested and confirmed by reviews.

A requirement for a nanny is an almost constant stay with the child in order to know exactly whether the baby is sleeping or awake. Sometimes the nanny is given a separate room adjacent to the nursery. The list of requirements for a night nanny is formed based on the wishes of the parents and the characteristics of the child’s night behavior. nine0005

In addition, duties of a night nanny include: bathing the child before going to bed, feeding, changing clothes. Some parents prefer to have a night nanny take their child for a walk before bed and cook dinner for him. Putting the child to bed, you can read a children’s book, sing a song or tell a fairy tale. All children are different and some babies need to be shaken. The nanny must necessarily take into account the preferences of the little person, so as not to inflict psychological trauma on him. After all, the baby can be stressed if left alone in a dark room. nine0005

If such a nanny is invited to a baby, then she must be able to carry out mandatory hygiene procedures: rinse the navel, eyes, sprinkle or lubricate the folds. The kid, depending on age, asks for food several times a night and the nanny should give food warm. Of course, a woman also makes sure that the child is comfortable: she checks the diaper and changes it as needed.

In addition, laundry and ironing services for children’s clothes, as well as breakfast preparation, can be arranged. Morning hygiene procedures are also performed by a night nanny, in addition, she ventilates the room and cleans the kitchen after breakfast. Thus, you can entrust the nanny with a minimum of actions, or entrust her with many additional tasks that are paid separately. nine0005

Before leaving, the nanny talks about the child’s well-being and how he slept and ate. After all, parents should present a complete picture of the state of the baby. Many still find it difficult to make a choice in favor of a candidate. Here, first of all, you should pay attention to your own feelings and the behavior of the nanny with the child, look, sincerity is usually felt. Experts have noticed that a professional nanny can be seen immediately. During the first days you will be able to assess the well-being of the baby after a night’s sleep. If a woman copes with the tasks entrusted to her, then the child in the morning will be clean, fed, happy and cheerful. nine0005

If you immediately did not like something in the invited specialist, you should contact us to select another nanny. After all, experience shows that first impressions are rarely deceiving.
