1 in 10 babies has problems at birth. Around the world, this affects over 35.000 newborns every day. Most of these babies are born
premature, some experience asphyxia or other problems. These babies
need all the strength and support they can get.

Still, medical convention prescribes to clamp the cord soon after birth. Babies are taken away from their mothers in order to receive urgent care.
We have the opportunity to improve.

  Scientists Prof. Arjan te Pas and Prof. Stuart Hooper, and a team from Leiden University Medical Center, developed a new way of thinking and working to give babies a “shock free birth”. This new approach, called physiological-based cord clamping, allows neonatal caregivers to provide lifesaving care with the umbilical cord intact for as long as needed. Close to mom, the baby gets maximum benefit from the blood from the placenta, up to the moment it is breathing on its own.
