Companies that will let you work from home and are hiring now

It’s no secret that the remote job market has exploded since 2020 — and even as more companies call employees back to the office, the pandemic-fueled desire for flexibility hasn’t abated. 

To help people find the best remote opportunities, FlexJobs, a membership service for jobseekers, identified the top 100 companies hiring remote jobs in 2023, taking into account some 58,000 companies who listed their openings on the site between January and December 2022. 

FlexJobs saw a 20% increase in the number of remote job listings in 2022 over 2021 — up 8% from the year prior — with continued growth in marketing, accounting and finance, as well as HR and recruiting roles. About 62% of listings are for jobs at an intermediate or experienced level. 

“We’re not seeing one industry dominate the remote job market like we used to,” Kathy Gardner, the vice president of communications at FlexJobs, says. “Three years ago, your best bet to land a remote job was to apply to tech companies, but now, there’s a much more healthy mix of industries offering flexible opportunities. ” 

Several major companies have consistently made the top 100 since FlexJobs first published their ranking in 2014. CVS Health, Elevance Health, Kelly, Parexel, SAP, Stride and UnitedHealth Group have all provided “unparalleled” job flexibility and promoted a healthy work-life balance to their employees, Gardner says.

New to the list this year are Airbnb, Reddit and Lyft, as well as other companies that have ditched plans to return to the office and announced permanent remote options for employees. 

“It’s still a tight labor market, which means companies have to cater to what jobseekers want — and that’s remote work,” Gardner says. “But I also think a lot of companies who switched to remote work during the pandemic realized that it was a smart, long-term strategy for their business, allowing them to expand their talent pools, save money and make their employees happier.”

Companies are scaling back their remote offerings even though jobs that allow you to work from home — or from anywhere in the world — continue to be hot commodities amongst the workforce.

Remote jobs fell to 14% of all active listings on LinkedIn in September, down from a peak of 20% in February, according to a new report from the platform. Yet demand for flexible work options continues to climb: In September, remote job postings drew in 52% of applications on LinkedIn, compared to 50% of applications in February.

So, where are all the jobs with this coveted flexibility? 

To help people find the best remote opportunities, FlexJobs, a membership service for jobseekers, identified the 15 companies with the most remote job openings, including full-time and part-time opportunities, this fall. FlexJobs looked at over 35,000 jobs posted on the site’s database between August and October 2022 to compile their list.

Here are the top 15 companies hiring for remote jobs right now, according to FlexJobs:

While not all of the companies listed include pay ranges in their job postings, some employers, including CVS Health, UnitedHealth Group and HubSpot, provide estimated salaries with their advertised positions — and several of the available remote jobs offer competitive salaries of $100,000 or higher.  

A remote account executive on HubSpot’s sales team, for example, can expect to earn between $134,000 and $144,000, while a remote medical director at Aetna, a CVS Health company, earns between $141,500 and $302,500 per year. A remote mergers and acquisitions analyst at UnitedHealth Group working out of New York, on the other hand, can expect to earn $72,800 to $129,900 per year. 

In spite of fewer remote job openings, Jennifer Shappley, LinkedIn’s vice president of global talent acquisition, expects flexibility to remain a top priority for workers. 

“Even facing an uncertain future, people still highly value two areas of work life that have gotten a lot of attention since the start of the pandemic: work-life balance, and flexible-work arrangements – including remote work,” Shappley said in LinkedIn’s report, adding that she expects the two attributes to be “top talent drivers” for the next couple of years. 

In a competitive remote job market, your visibility as a candidate could be the key to a successful job search, Toni Frana, a career services manager at FlexJobs, tells CNBC Make It. “Positioning yourself as an expert in your area, being active on social platforms and engaging with others may be the differentiator between you and other candidates,” she says.

Frana also stresses the importance of networking, which can also help you stand out in a tight job market. Professional, virtual communities on platforms like Slack, Reddit, Discord and LinkedIn, for example, offer ample opportunities to meet people who work at remote companies you’re interested in or make personal connections.

As in the traditional job market, “referrals tend to get much more traction than a cold application” for remote jobs, Frana adds. “It’s important not to overlook this part of the process!”

In 2020, companies around the world were forced to switch to “work from home”. Many executives were worried about this, because no one could accurately predict the outcome of such a transition. Hitachi

    The transition to remote work is a labor market trend that is unlikely to be reversed or stopped. In October, compared to September of the current year, the number of vacancies involving remote work increased by 43% in St. Petersburg – Ekaterina Solovyova, head of the marketing department of the HeadHunter North-West employee search portal, told 78.ru about this.     Most remote employees, according to VTsIOM, are in IT (36%), media (35%) or financial and insurance activities (23%). The number of those wishing to work remotely is also growing: in October, more than 111,000 resumes with such a wish were posted on hh.ru. HR managers agree that it will be extremely difficult to return employees who left during the pandemic to the office. As Ekaterina Solovyova said, people massively prefer to stay at home:

    — There was a period when companies wanted to return employees to the office: the pandemic subsided and it was relatively calm, but many did not want to. Because they have adapted. If we remember, initially it was a lot of stress when everyone went remote: neither people nor companies understood how to work, what to do. Now to return them is the same stress, they are already used to it. Why do we need to waste time on the road, on lunches in a cafe, when we can work comfortably and efficiently at home? interest. In general, the company’s research shows that the number of those wishing to work remotely in St. Petersburg has increased by 89%.

    Have representatives of other St. Petersburg recruiting companies noticed similar trends? With this question, we turned to Olga Sviridova, director of the HR-Analytics recruitment agency.

    – If we take a year, then I would say that there is such a trend. After the pandemic, it seems to me that everyone tried the remote format, and some employers and employees are very impressed with this: they save time and jobs, everything that a person can provide for himself at home. And for some companies, this makes sense. These are the IT-sphere, accounting, the financial sector, that is, those who can work independently on a computer.     But Olga Sviridova’s company did not notice a surge in remote vacancies over the past month:

    — I don’t observe a trend of remote format from employers this month, at all. We are not a very large company, but we have a lot of clients all over St. Petersburg, in different districts and in different areas. We can estimate that such growth is not observed in a month.

    What is absolutely present in the labor market of St. Petersburg is a clear skew in the number of applicants who want to work remotely and employers who are ready to provide such an opportunity. The first, despite the increase in the number of such vacancies, still remains much more. nine0003

    But why are many employers not ready to let an employee work at home, in a comfortable environment for him, even if such an option is possible for his profession? After all, this is a clear saving on working equipment and space, and even on such trifles as water in the cooler, toilet paper in the office bathroom and electricity! Who keeps holding on to the old office format?

    “These are small companies, small and medium-sized businesses,” said Olga Sviridova. – Those companies that want to maintain a team spirit, because when a person works from home, he does not see the entire business process. There are companies for which the interaction between employees in the field is very important. nine0113

    The director of HR Analytics gave an example from her own practice:

    — There was a request for an HR specialist. She said that she was ready to lower her salary expectations if she was given hybrid terms of cooperation, but the director was forced to refuse and offer only full-time employment. He said that the personnel officer not only registers employees, but also communicates with them in the office, and this contact must be maintained.

    Usually these are middle-aged people, they have a slightly old management system, and they consider it the only effective one, that only in daily contact when communicating with employees can one understand how an employee breathes, whether he remains loyal, whether he is looking for another job. nine0113 Photo: pexels.com

    This creates some difficulties in the search for personnel and for the HR experts themselves. As Olga Sviridova noted, many good specialists agree either to a hybrid job (two days in the office, three at home, or vice versa), or to complete remote work – and those who still manage to be persuaded to work in the office “greatly raise their salary expectations pay.”

    What kind of specialists, from what areas most often work remotely? The expert confirms that IT specialists and accountants are always at the forefront of this army. They are also tender managers, supporting documentation managers and other employees working with documents. nine0003

    And if we talk about age categories, are the VTsIOM polls true? Is remote work really a matter for the young, first of all?

    – I would most likely agree, because they are already working according to a new format, – our interlocutor said. “They save their time a lot, they live in the Internet space, and for them the remote format is higher in demand than other categories.

    We all understand the obvious advantages of working from home: you can sleep an extra hour or even two, you don’t need to spend money on gasoline or the subway, and you don’t need to spend money on makeup and hair if you are a woman. You can just get up half an hour before the start of the working day, or even five minutes before, pour some coffee – and now you are already at work. nine0003

    Meanwhile, many of those who work remotely are starting to leave their homes less and less — after all, food and all the necessary things can also be ordered at home. People wash less often and look after themselves less, because there is no one to show off except at home. Yes, and work is sometimes “smeared”, taking up non-working time – especially if the employee is required only for a specific final result, which can be worked on after hours.

    “There is another side,” agreed the expert. – Minus physical, literally physiological – this can lead to hypodynamia. The pandemic has taught us that both work can be remote and our shopping, and thus there may not be a good, worthwhile reason for physical activity. A rare person will follow the same schedule that he was forced to follow before: wake up at a certain time, move for a certain amount of time and put a load on certain muscle groups. nine0113

    As a solution to this problem, you need to give yourself such a load in the gym with a walk in the park, or do exercises, morning and evening exercises at home, using some kind of home exercise equipment. But a rare person has such willpower and is capable of such a clear setting of tasks and regularity in their implementation.

    Physical inactivity leads to the appearance of factors that contribute to various diseases, from banal weight gain to prerequisites for osteochondrosis or, in men, prostatitis, from a sitting posture and a small amount of movement. These are literally medical, biological, physiological factors that become a minus of the remote form of work. nine0113

    There are a number of other problems – less obvious at first glance, but no less significant. First of all, these are psychological problems, Dmitry Kovpak noted:

    – Switching from one mode to another is carried out through the so-called dynamic stereotype. That is, we have a certain habit of doing things at work and relaxing at home. And there may be a failure when at home is both work and rest, and it turns out that we can no longer associate this space as a place of only rest, household chores and family, marital relations. Everything that we associated with work: race, pressure, stress, worries, will conditionally “stick to the walls” psychologically. Previously, you could leave it at work, now it will remain in your head. nine0113

    Again, if a person has a very strong will, very high-quality awareness, very vigilant attention, he can, of course, remind himself. But rarely does anyone do this with such regularity that a conditioned reflex according to Ivan Petrovich Pavlov is formed.     But even if you have equipped yourself with a separate workplace that you leave immediately after the end of the working day, other problems remain. Among them, a special place is occupied by the problem of communication.

    — Communication can also move to a virtual environment: the Internet, Zoom, Skype — that is, we may not have enough live communication, — said Dmitry Kovpak. – This may affect communication at home, because earlier we were freed from it and, on the contrary, longed to return to it. And here we get a limited circle of communication, sometimes the conflict in the family increases because of this and the lack of easy communication that we had, for example, at lunchtime, when we could talk with colleagues not only for work, but also for some abstract topics. nine0113

    A person does not realize the variety of these contacts, and this includes communication on the road, communication at work is not only professional. And this may not be enough. There is such a number of Dunbar’s social contacts: when there are more of them – this is an overload, but also when there are fewer of them – this is a deficit, because of which a person feels deprived. A person may not be aware of these deficits, but suffer because of it. This can turn into general nervousness, sleep disturbance, even some kind of physical discomfort. Not understanding the nature of this, a person will either drink it down, or seize it, or jam it with some form of remote shopmania – ordering goods through a remote form. nine0113

    It is difficult to track all these relationships here, but psychotherapists are just faced with such “side effects” of remote work.

    Stanislav worked remotely for a large foreign IT company for a long time, and the schedule completely allowed him to go to bed at five in the morning and get to work in the afternoon. In the spring of 2022, he had to get a job in a Russian company – also remotely, but with a more conservative schedule. However, he still cannot reorganize: he goes to bed in the morning, since he is not able to fall asleep earlier, wakes up three hours later for the morning planning meeting, sleeps an hour at lunchtime and an hour or two in the evening. Such a schedule has a rather bad effect on his health, but he is not able to build a healthy relationship with sleep and regimen. nine0003

    There are a lot of people who completely messed up their sleep patterns among the “remote workers”. And this is another very big problem, the psychotherapist agrees. According to Dmitry Kovpak, problems with the routine seriously affect such “subtle areas” as sleep and libido, gradually destroying them:

    – A person, in fact, leaves the familiar system, where there were clear schedules, schedules, some literal stereotypes: when I wake up, fall asleep, where I go, what I do, the time of breakfast, lunch, the time of physical, psychological, industrial stress. When this schedule goes astray, it is very difficult for a person to maintain it in manual mode. This leads to certain cumulative effects, in fact, a person can confuse day with night. nine0113

    If he is in the same room around the clock, his circadian rhythms are disturbed. Like, for example, if a person is placed in a cave where neither the sun nor the moon rises, the person will be disoriented, his sleep schedule will definitely go wrong, and he will fall asleep very chaotically and spontaneously, then wake up, then cuckoo, then doze off.
